Our Gameweek 6 captain poll is now open for your votes and the middling form of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is likely to dominate thinking this week.

A home fixture against Southampton, who have conceded more big chances than all bar three teams, would have surely seen the Egyptian unanimously handed the armband last season but after two successive blanks – and another in the UEFA Champions League last night – the captaincy debate remains wide open.

Jurgen Klopp’s promised rotation also nags in the back of the mind and there remains the possibility that Salah could have his minutes managed at Anfield on Saturday or even be dropped to the bench. The Egyptian’s underlying statistics, however, continue to impress.

With four goals to his name this season, Sadio Mane (£10.0m) is a viable alternative for the armband for this fixture – but after starting all six of the Reds’ competitive matches this season, the threat of possible bench duty also hangs over the Senegalese midfielder.

We may be fretting over nothing, of course: Liverpool have a Carabao Cup third round tie against Chelsea next Wednesday, which could be the fixture in which Klopp decides to wield the rotation axe.

One Liverpool player who can be more confident of a start this weekend is Roberto Firmino (£9.4m), who has scored in each of the Reds’ last three matches in all competitions and only played 18 minutes of his side’s 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening.

The scintillating form of Eden Hazard (£10.8m) is sure to attract the Belgian midfielder plenty of votes in our poll, with Chelsea taking on West Ham United this weekend.

Maurizio Sarri’s comments about wanting Hazard to spend more time closer to goal – this after the Chelsea star scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Cardiff City – are portentous and their opponents this weekend sit joint-18th for shots on goal conceded and are tied in 19th for big chances conceded.

Hazard has scored in every match in which he has started this season and delivered assists in the two fixtures in which he appeared as a substitute.

While we are still unsure as to how seriously Sarri will take the UEFA Europa League, there is a general feeling that Hazard won’t be prone to the same frustrating rotation in the league that may dog the other premium picks in this article. Sarri traditionally doesn’t chop and change his domestic starting XIs much, either.

Given that Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) is in contention to feature for Manchester City on Wednesday evening against Lyon after an ankle knock, the 50.8% of FPL managers who own the Argentinean striker will be increasingly confident that he will be fit enough to make the trip to Cardiff City in Gameweek 6.

The ideal scenario tonight for his owners would be perhaps a cameo substitute’s appearance, proving his fitness while not draining his energy reserves.

Aguero has yet to deliver an attacking return away from home this season, but will likely be presented with ample opportunities to break that duck with Neil Warnock insisting that his team won’t just sit behind the ball and defend.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic‘s (£6.8m) fine runs of form make them level-headed differential captaincy picks, though the pair are up against two defences in Wolves and Watford who sit in the top five for least amount of shots conceded this season.

Our weekly captaincy video with Joe and David is available to watch at the foot of this article or here, while you can let us know who you favour for armband duties by casting your vote in the poll below or on the sidebar.

    David Silva vs Richarlison

Everyone on WC but also many others have (or try to get) a mid of: Salah/Mane, Hazard/Mane, Fraser, 4.5 fodder (4 spots) and last spot to be taken.
The standout options for that last place is Silva, Maddison or Richarlison.
Maddison is good pick but was a bit lucky imo and at that price Richa is much better so the dilemma is the Brazilian or the Spaniard.
I think Dilva will be rotated (age, Pep comment - that will finally happen) even he fills that "KDB spot/duty". He scored 2 goals (one was a FK) but the attacking points are spread for whole City team plus he is 8.5 where...Richalison for that one final spot costs much less. He is Eve best player and looks like a new Mahrez to me. He has great form (even in Brazil team). He scored 3 golas in 2,5 games and as Eve is really attacking team where Richa is their main man so think its better to pick him. Dont get me wrong, Silva is good pick but save yourselfe rotation headache with him and use that almost 2.0 spare!

Plus he played well in Brazil team. We may see a rise of a new star here.

Dilva is club captain (in absence of Kompany) and now retired from international duty. He won't be rotated

There where a lot of club captains who where on the bench so this is not a reason. Retired form national team doesnt mean he is nailed neither.
His age, UCL start and City bench tells me he will be rotated for sure (just KDB out gave him more minutes at the beginning of the season).
Thats just my opinion obv and like I said he IS a good pick but simply Richarlison plus 1.9 ITB is better.

not about being better, it's about stretching the squad out across 4 competition. They have quality options all over midfield

The comment of him playing less might mean just less other games than PL. We have no idea of his possible rotation yet. Even KdB may be rotated one day. Should be nailed as long as KdB nailed.

MCI is significantly more fixture proof than EVE so difficult to compare and depends how spared funds are used.

      That's a tight poll.

      I said A because
      1) aside from whatever else is going on, Salah is better than Mane
      2) David's returns in a rotation heavy side where anyone can score are somewhat uncertain. Fraser has very strong form, good fixtures, and is central to nearly everything his side do well. (Silva owner, non-Fraser owner)

        Cheers doc, appreciate it!

I would have got Shaw for Holebas, then I had Dilva for Rich and Vardy for Lukaku but 0.1 short now after accidentally dropping Fraser out and having to get him back in 0.1 more expensive.

Hopefully Rich & Kaku will prove me right vs Dilva & Vardy......??!

        1. Dr. Mantis Toboggan
          • 9 Years

Not too bad so really. Shaw would be nice but given his record with Mourinho I feel like this injury, plus Young and Dalot both available, plus the introduction of cup competitions could see him rotated more from now on.

Very little between RichKaku and DilVardy, could go either way really.

Biggest disappointment is being forced into a wildcard before you were ready, that hurts. Best of luck with it, may very well work out for you!

Cheers, appreciate it doc! I’m hoping it’s damage limitation. I agree Shaw was always going to be a risk of rotation but prefer him over Holebas still...and hopefully the two I have now will do the biz. Just need a few price rises this week to claw the 0.1 back!

Always concerned about not having Salah!!! But I feel there are more points to be had elsewhere by spreading the cost and the compromises to get him in just aren’t worth it when he isn’t firing....I will now be proven wrong against Southampton!!

Is it worth a 4 point hit to bring in Vardy or Wilson for Ings?

I've got doubts over Mendy and Aguero and rotation concerns over Mane and Lucas Moura. Bench consists of Holebas away to Fulham, and Neves and Doherty away to Man Utd. So...

    a. Stick and hope for the best
    b. Vardy
    c. Wilson
    d. Someone else

    Who to bench?

    Kepa - Hamer
    Alonso - Robertson - Mendy - Holebas - AWB
    Pereyra - Hazard - Mane - Fraser - Neves
    Mitro - Kun - Wilson

Currently on: Pereyra - Holebas - Neves.

    Smart or no?

    Guys,
If you wildcard, what stat are you looking at, or what stat you look at the most .

How u arrange all the data including eye test and fixture?

    A) eye test
    B) fixture
    C) total points
    D) ICT index
    E) most shot on target
    F) set piece takers

    Or anything else.
What is the most important in accurate order?

    Thanks in advance.

There isn't an accurate order but - final 3rd passes, penalty box touches, shots in the box, fixtures, form

    4. Holmes
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

BEF are important along with chances created and heatmap.

For defenders and GKs, fixtures and being defensively strong is important.

Eye test is a luxury for me, cant watch every game.

I look at which players are busting my rank when they score well that I don't have and then a case of value players with the best next 6-10 fixtures to fill in the rest.

    7. Pinturicchio10
      7 years, 10 months ago

A, C, D, E, F go without consideration for me. If you play your wildcard the ins and outs should be fairly obvious for most of your squad without having to delve this deep into statistics. Outside of theirs obvious trades, look to players who are being overlooked / sold off but have really good fixtures ahead. Examples would be Vardy or Aubameyang.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

What if they are lots of obvious options? Aguero, Aubameyang, Lacazette, Vardy, Lukaku, Zaha, Mitrovic, Jimenez, Ings, Giroud, Wilson, King, and only 3 slots. How do you choose between them?
