Phil Ampleford’s stellar run of six straight top 10,000 finishes, including two inside the top 1,000, was brought to a sudden end in 2017/18 when he finished 95,198th in the overall rankings.

Undaunted, he reflected on mistakes made that year and is back on track in style in the current campaign, nestled inside the top 3,000.

In our second Meet the Manager interview, Phil chats to Joe about the strategies that have earned him so many high finishes.

He also reveals what went wrong last season and how he has learned from mistakes made.

In addition, he finds time to look in-depth at his current successful squad and offer advice to other Fantasy managers about how to do well in 2018/19.

A flexible approach and close attention to defender selection, both expensive and cheap, looks key to success this time around as Phil aims to bounce back from last year’s disappointment.

The chat with Phil is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Nick (aka Triggerlips) can be viewed here.

That guy spoke so brilliantly about his experience and gave some invaluable tips , instead of praising someone and appreciating the ‘free knowledge’ .. You had to right something off context .

Fair play guys, didn't mean to be insulting I just thought it was funny that the first two guys they had on looked the same.

You came across really well imo. What was really nice was gaining such an insight from a top manager as to how people play when things don't go too well. Never really thought about flexibility and how to adapt etc. in fact after watching that I can see how I've been sleep walking through this game the past 3 seasons 😆

I stupidly transferred out the non-playing Fabri coz he was at -88 compared to Ryan’s -94 and was expecting to save 0.1m by bringing Ryan back in at 4.4m before Fabri fell. Safe to say it didn’t work out at all, so rly hoping Ryan drops asap

The choices I have are that or I could do Mendy and Moutinho to Chilwell and Richarlison for a hit.
I believe I'm better off with the latter tbh...

          • 16 Years

I think it's great that there is a real decision to be made by many here, and it's really hard to know what's for the best. I am certainly considering the Kane move, which will leave me with no Pool assets, but I am lucky that I could WC them back in my team in a couple of GWs time.

See now there's the difference, you as will many others still have your Wildcard intact. Mine however is long gone so my thinking is going to be slightly different. Another thing is I want to get rid of Mendy so the Salah and Wilson move to get Kane and Richarlison would still leave an injured Mendy in my team so another reason I'm a bit loathed to do it...

            1. Philman
              • 16 Years
              7 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, with the WC gone, such a major move comes with bigger risks, and with the jury out as to whether Salah out Kane in is actually a good move, concentrating on your high priced injured players may be better advised. The issue with Mendy out is who comes in. The choices don't seem so great as they did in GW1, unless you downgrade to release funds.

Mendy and Moutinho to Chilwell and Richarlison for a hit I've settled on just waiting as late as possible before I press that button.
Like yourself, I too just think those Leicester fixtures are FPL gold I just can't let that run go 🙂

I’m pondering the Kane move, which would be for a hit, but I don’t have any other issues to address. My WC is gone so my Salah plan is 2FTs in GW9 and a prayer that nothing bad happens over the international break.

I’m looking forward to viewing the Podcast.

The plan was always likely to be Aurier tonight and against Barca, and Trippier in the league. That plan's gone now Aurier was injured and Trippier pretty much has to play against Barca. Not what Trippier owners (like me) wanna hear, but we can't pretend we haven't been warned.

After hazards fantastic display against Liverpool I'm really considering to get him in. I can get him in for no hits by doing:

      Firmino + maura -----> Hazard + ings

The only problem then is that I will not get Richarlison for maura and I'll be stuck with Mendy for another week.
I'm also tempted to keep maura and remove pereyra against arsenal instead of Maura and get trippier for Mendy. I really like to have firmino in my team as that guy is pure class and can actually score a goal or two against Chelsea and

It's not best 11, it's the 11 you picked. You were never playing Neves or AWB in GW1. You benched Mendy in favour of Davies, VVD and Luiz. Forget about GW1.

Yea I was considered WanB too.. 9 points 2 weeks in a row.. his luck with clean sheets can’t continue too much longer before conceding. Away at Bournemouth might be the one.
Done deal.. WanB on the bench.

Palace seem good defensively, but about Bourn probably aren’t going to blank a second week in a row. If you believe that, then you should bench Fraser 😉

Tbh I have little idea of how proficient KWPs is.
If it was anyone but Cardiff at home I would say Poch would just play Trippier, but Cardiff really are poor and Spurs could probably beat them at home with their reserves

Yeh probably to be fair. Zero cover meant they had to though, Jan was third choice LB and he was 1st choice CB so no chance. If the two prem games were any tougher than Cardiff or Hudds wthen I wouldn't be as worried, and Barca in between after losing to Inter spells a change somewhere but could be completely wrong.

        A

Sometimes you wait a week and miss a really big haul (plus price rises). I’ve done that already this season and lost ground because of it.

Sometimes, even though it goes against everything you’re taught in FFS, you have to take hits for good players.

personnaly I would get in there early and go with my own gut feeling. I would much rather rue an average week from Hazard, than have to stare back at his possible 16 points and 0.2 price rise from elsewhere. His goal last night shows his form and class to produce from nothing.

@Joe and team - One piece of feedback on the meet the manager series.. First of all i think it is a great series.. I think you need to also spend a minute bringing out the personal side of managers.. it would be great to know who they are, who they support, etc as it brings a personal touch.. same goes to you guys.. i have no clue if this is your full time job.. what else you do.. Joe i know you are a brighton fan but thats about it..

Totally agree, even more, it would be not only interesting to read/watch, this information can be useful to understanding game style of some managers better.

For example, Impulsive persons take more hits, dullard players are more calm and patient. Manager style usually goes from personal features.

It is my first season with FPL, so i would appreciate advices here
      My team is:
      Begovic
      Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, perreira, bissaka
      Salah, Mane, Maddison, Fraser, Neves
      Mitro, Aguero, C. Wilson
0.7 ITB, WC not used, Rank 130k

Trying to get Richarlison, Should it be Mane to Rich FT, or perreira+ neves to bennett+Richa for -4

It's Chelsea v's Liverpool this GW7 on Saturday evening 17:30
I believe Chelsea will just edge it by 1 goal 1-0 or 2-1
So having Mane - Salah & Robbo from Liverpool you drop like lead!

Strong chance of this. The rotation risk was always there, but it seemed likely that Aurier would play the two cup games and Trippier would feature in the easy league fixtures... that's blown out of the water now but couldn't really have been foreseen. KWP was never in the picture until now.

nah, three games in a row, two very easy ones and one hard one, wouldn´t be surprised if he (Trippier) starts them all. They need creativity from width, and Trippier does provide that. KWP is more defensive astute but not so good attacking. HUd and Cardiff will sit deep, which will require attacking threat from wider areas, that´s why i think he will start both. Still undecided if it´s worth bringing him in, he comes with a warning sign, yes. To me it boils down to; Laporte, which have one very good fixture, but then to quite difficult one. His stats are actually good attackingwise. Guardiola doesnt care about cleanies as long as they win. United defender, but once the thought arrive it died in the same moment. Shaw, but there is a risk of rotation. Uniteds fixtures looks fine but how many times can DDG bail them out? And, if you choose Trippier the likelihood of him not participating is huge when he don´t start and if he doesn´t, then AWB is there to the rescue

New article so last RP for hope of a response or 2

What to do here lads? I have the fear re Haz and Rich (and maybe Kane) and feel some hits may be justified:

      £0.6itb, on -4 already
      Fab
      Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, PVA
      Salah, Mané*, Fraser
      Aguero (C), Wilson, Mitro

      (Foster) (Pedro*, AWB, Hughes)

I still have WC and thinking of playing it in GW9 so taking out players now not as serious potentially

      A) Pedro > Rich/ Madd (-4)
      B) Mané > Rich/ Madd (-4)
      C) Mané, PVA > Hazard, Duffy/ Boly (-8)
      D) Mané, Pedro > Haz, up to 6.0 mid (-8)
      E) Salah, Pedro > Haz, Rich/ Dilva/ Madd.etc
      F) Salah, Wilson > Rich, Kane
      G) Hold and suck up the fear of not owning Haz, Rich, Madd, Tripp etc etc
