Question Time is back as Fantasy Premier League managers face some tough choices going into the second international break of the season.

Sergio Aguero’s latest blank at Anfield and the managing of his minutes has some owners considering offloading him.

Meanwhile, with so many budget forwards performing this season a debate has emerged over which ones are the best to own.

So we’ve put your queries to another panel of FPL personalities…

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a former leader of the Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Question 1 – FPL General

With the fixture shift for many teams ahead, how should we arrange our defence? We have seen Alonso and Mendy make many of us cry before and Liverpool defence and Doherty seem unavoidable.

“My current defensive set-up is Trippier, Alonso, Holebas, Wan-Bissaka and Bennett. My Gameweek 9 transfer will be Holebas to one of Robertson, Mendy or Doherty.

“I’m happy to invest in three premium defenders and roll with the two budget enablers for the next few weeks.

“I missed out on Robertson’s points earlier in the season, and I’ve always felt he’s a player I’d bring in at some point. Now feels like the right time to do so with favourable fixtures ahead for Liverpool.

“I sold Mendy for Trippier two weeks ago which proved to be a good move and I’m happy to hold on to the Spurs man for the time being.

“I’m leaning towards Robertson over Mendy at this point but Gameweek 9 is still a long way away, with the international break.

“As much as I’d like to bring in Doherty, I’m reluctant to triple up on Wolves defensively (I’ve got Patricio as my set and forget goalkeeper). Both he and Jonny are excellent options playing as wing-backs in a very good Wolves side.

“Looking at the fixtures, Pereira (Leicester), Balbuena (West Ham) and Dunk (Brighton) are three others who are on my Watchlist.”

Question 2 – James Egersdorff

Is it time to offload Aguero? If so, who is the best replacement?

“This is a real conundrum with Sergio’s limited minutes becoming a real headache for FPL managers.

“I gambled a little ahead of GW8 and took a last minute hit to bring in Harry Kane for Aguero. I didn’t like the fact his game time was being impacted and felt that the Liverpool match would be a low scoring affair.

“Likewise, I thought Kane would deliver against Cardiff and settle himself into a nice run of form. Alas, half my prediction was correct but the continuation of Kane’s poor value for money has left me thinking Aguero may be the go-to option with home games against Burnley and Southampton on the horizon.

“A match against Spurs is sandwiched in between but his record against them is impressive having scored 10 goals since he joined City in 2011.

“So this brings me round to whether I think Aguero’s pitch time may improve. Guardiola has spoken about a small injury in recent weeks and given his absence from Argentina’s international squad, perhaps the two-week international break comes at a good time.

“Likewise, the main rival for pitch time Jesus finds himself travelling away with Brazil. The return to fitness of Kevin de Bruyne is appealing too as a provider of even more scoring opportunities for the Argentinian moving forward. If uncertainty over Aguero’s minutes do remain though, especially as there are some must-win Champion’s League games coming up, then there are some alternatives FPL managers could look to.

“An obvious upgrade is the aforementioned Kane. Yet to hit top form yet this season, he is still tied with Aguero in second place on the goal-scorers chart.

“His price is at a premium however and FPL managers will have a keen eye on his form for England this week.

“Alexandre Lacazette is probably the in-form striker from the top six, but having been burned with Emery’s decision to bench Mkhitaryan earlier this season it’s a case of once bitten twice shy for me given that there are seven International level players to fill four attacking roles in the Arsenal XI.

“Jamie Vardy is an alternative with favourable fixtures and is almost certain to play but given Aguero and Man City’s goal-scoring prowess and Kane’s track record, it’s a battle between those two for a place in my team at the moment.”

Question 3 – Simon March

With so many good mid-price forwards such as Mitrovic, Arnautovic, Wilson, King, Murray, Jimenez, etc. taking their turns to perform every other week, which do you prefer going forward for the next several weeks?

“Form for mid-priced forwards so often seems tied to good fixtures, not just because they face weaker defences but, also because these are the matches their managers have identified as the ones they need to win.

“Of course, there are some players who seem capable of scoring against anybody, but it’s a much bigger task when they’re isolated up front in a team that is prioritising their defence.

“For that reason, I’m following the fixtures and looking at Marko Arnautovic at West Ham, Glenn Murray at Brighton, and Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (probably just about in that order) with the caveat that the latter’s fixtures get very mixed after Gameweek 12.

“For the same reason, I’m not as convinced by the long-term potential of the Bournemouth forwards Josh King and Callum Wilson who, you could argue, are the current in-form players.

“After a couple of inviting Gameweeks, their fixtures take a pretty dramatic nose-dive and they’ll need to be at their very best to keep delivering throughout that period.

“However, since we’re juggling a lot of premium options this season, I think there’s also a case for looking at Southampton’s Danny Ings and Wolves’ Raul Jimenez, who, at around the £5.6 mark, offer a decent prospect of goals and the option to invest the savings elsewhere. That Ings is on penalties probably just about swing things for him but there’s not much between them.”

I'm very tempted to push the button Maddison > Hazard Lukaku > King/Wilson
Not a fan of such an early transfer move in the IB but surely Hazard will have at least one rise?
Also tempted to go King instead of Wilson due to penalties. Very matched on stats. Any advise going? thank you

Quick thoughts and point of Discussion!!

Is Salah "Kane 2.0" ? Do you think those looking to bring him in will be burned, if not what makes you confident in him ?

Liverpool front 3 looking of the boil off late, and the decision as to whether to bring in Salah or not is going to be a season changer.

Look at the teams they've played compared with the teams they're about to play. I kept Salah anyway so no transfers needed.

I'm not confident but doing it nonetheless. Hopefully he finds some form, if not it's not an easy downgrade to Sterling/KDB/Mane.

He's still the joint 5th highest scoring mid and plays the two worst defences in the league next.
If he doesn't manage anything in those games then I'll think about moving him on.

To be fair 3 of his 4 blanks have been against Spurs, Chelsea and City.

No he's not Kane 2.0. The difference is that Salah has 3 of the best fixtures possible on the calendar in a row. That is a lot different to Kane who had one insanely favorable week then a few following weeks of tough fixtures.

Yes it's potentially season defining. Salah vs Mane really since not picking a Pool mid is a huge mistake imo. I think it's safer to take Salah and then if you want you can downgrade after a few weeks if he's really not up to speed.

      Minutes managed
      Conversion rate halved
      Poor goal involvement (33%)
      More depth to squad

These are all considerations relatively unrelated to the quality opposition.

Liverpool haven't scored now than 1 in for games. The quality of opposition was high, but we saw how they approached those games last year.

Liverpool are not blood and thunder any more. The reason they bought Allison and DVD was to build a more solid measured approach to putting away teams like HUD away 1/2-0. I don't expect fireworks. They can hold onto a lead, they may, but they no longer NEED to score 4 goals

Sorry maybe I'm missing something, but what exactly is the Aguero 'dilemma'?

He blanked against Liverpool, so what? All attackers for both Liverpool and Man City blanked against each other so that means nothing.

    Before that his scores have been 8, 6, 7, 6, 2, 20

He is staying put in my team, Burnley home next after a 2 week rest!

        Current team:
        Patricio
        Trippier, Alonso, Alexander-Arnold

          Patricio, Button
          Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Mendy, Wan-Bissaka, Bennett
Salah, Hazard, De Bruyne, Richarlison, muck
          Aguero, Arnautovic, Jiminez

Thanks! Salah the obvious place to look for extra funds but he's really the one I'm looking to get in. If he fails I can easily downgrade and spread the funds, would be very annoyed to leave myself scrambling for him post-wildcard though. It has crossed my mind (and the above isn't final even if I do pull the trigger) but as it stands I'm more likely to keep him in. Appreciate the input 🙂

Yeah I know what you mean. My real decision came 2 weeks ago when i took spurs assets on knowing they were short term only. If I had played the long game I would actually have more points already, ironically. Thats the way it goes sometimes though and having come this far with the plan I may as well see it through now!

You'll probably see me on Twitter tormenting myself with the same decision at some point over the next few days! Bennett could rise tonight and knock another 0.1 off what I can afford which would be pretty painful with my weak TV though so I need to make a decision soon.

I could do with getting drunk and just committing to the wildcard, at least I can tell myself it was all down to the whisky if it goes horribly wrong!

Not a bad team you've got there.

I personally think Kane was a massive mistake though. Not just because he blanked. The reason I didn't get him in was that he was only a good option last GW (in hindsight). He now has 7 fixtures where you wouldn't captain him. At that price, that's a huge waste of money.

I've still got Salah and am probably going to captain to him this week. He has some other nice fixtures coming up aswell. I think you have to ask yourself if you want him for the upcoming run? If yes, it's worth WC'ing and restructuring your side.

If no, you may aswell save the FT as your team is quite decent.

Well, the idea was to get Kane in last week for his inevitable massive haul and then wildcard him out - thought I was deadending my team but then I looked at my setup for this week and didn't hate it as much as I expected! I agree that getting him in as a long term move would be bad.

Got rid of Mane and Salah after GW3/4 and the plan was always to wildcard Salah back in this week, my team not being crap is actually causing me problems!

            1. Nabs Kebabs
              8 years, 10 days ago

You've had a plan all along.
Kane's blank surely only adds argument that you should WC him out.
You have to stick to your plan imo mate and play the WC. It's a good week to do so with the fixture swing.

I don't want the only reason I wildcard to be because I thought 5 weeks ago that it would be a good move though. I'm trying to look objectively at my current setup and decide what's best, this is where I keep getting stuck.

                Thanks for the input 🙂

Exactly the same here GWM. Also did Kane as a one week pre-WC punt, but then realized that my team was actually really good for this week.

Planning to bring Kun back in for Kane and WC next week now. Not sure what to do with your team though. I genuinely cant think who I'd want to sell out of that lot. I'd hang tight and wait to see if the break throws up any injuries!

Not sure I've ever been in a position where I wish my team was worse or would pick up a bunch of injuries! Taking a hit to remove Silva and Kane is damn risky but if Salah fires I'll feel so annoyed. Really not sure why I play this stupid game!

Wouldn't worry about mini league rivals at this stage - that's just 1 point a week to make up between now and the end of the season. Fringe players and captaincy choices can earn you that in a couple of weeks. Focus on your team - sounds like you like it as it is 🙂

Depends how many players you think are worth changing long term.
You can easily take a 4 point hit to swap Kane for Salah.
After that you'd only really be making minor changes.
A bench of -3 points this week is impressive.

Haha, thanks - was sweating on the Sunday teamsheets with Kabasele limbering up first on my bench!

See above, I'd do a bit of restructuring if I wildcarded but you're right, could easily be done with normal transfers over the course of a few weeks.

I always use mine early every season - can't help myself and I just took a -8 this week when I really didn't need to.

          8 years, 10 days ago

Again, not a major WC for me, but I think it will be worth it next week. You could probably make most of the canges you want with a couple of -8s, but hen what about he extra changes you want to make in a couple of weeks on top of that? WCing gets it all out of the way in one swoop, so that you can get back to managing things on a weekly basis.

            • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Well this is it. I can make incremental improvements (theoretically at least, the actual effect of my transfers tends to be the opposite) but by that measure will I ever hit a point to wildcard?

All the more annoying because my dithering means I've missed any possible double rises (Doherty the only one I guess) and so it makes any wildcard team that bit tougher.

            1. Bedknobs and Boomsticks
              8 years, 10 days ago

Really, hold this week. That team is excellent, although you could do with some Pool cover. WCing next week also gives a better fixture swing; just look at Leicester and WHam if you fancy them.

Thanks, the fact I'm getting conflicting advice suggests I'm right to be torn which is some comfort I guess, can see regrets in the near future though!

And yes, West Ham and Leicester have some sweet blue tickers. Would be happy with the Arnautovic pick on my wildcard but haven't found room for any Leicester players. Not sure where I'd slot one in without rearranging 2 or 3 players. All food for thought, thanks B&B 🙂

Ive hit the WC button as I was in a similar position to you with indecision.
Now its all about making the decisions for the medium term which is fun to plan.

Salah is a major thought for me also as, like you, I think he looks far above Mane and will explode to life soon. Hopefully as captain with a solid squad around him.

Yep, that's really the single biggest reason for me to play it - Salah could make mincemeat of Huddersfield and if I don't play it now then when?

        Agghh, this is killing me!

GW15 is also a reasonably strong fixture shift for patricularly Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd. Not as strong as this week though admittedly. Could you make it to then?

Lol at Man Utd being a factor 😉

Theoretically, sure. I mean, if I wildcard now I'll be hoping to make it to about GW31 or something so we always find a way of managing without most weeks. There's probably some psychology at play that makes me want to shed this burden and simplify my options going forward. Not a good reason to do it really.

Yeah had these thoughts also! Hence pulled the trigger and double rises dont seem extremely likely which is more of a plus for you I guess not to worry about maximising every pound of value.

Have a plan at a WC team first maybe!

Yeah, did that above - quite like it but in terms of first XI it would only be 5 players different to what I'm looking at if I just leave it alone. Down to 3/4 different if I take a hit.

They're significant changes though - bring in two Liverpool players (and captain one probably), two Man City players and Arnautovic.

Is Firmino a viable option? Great fixtures, certainly he is due , playing for an attacking team. Is his form holding people from getting him?

      He's playing too deep.

Vardy, Lacazette, Arnautovic and Mitrovic all better options.

surely bar lacazette, the others playing for mediocre teams will be scoring much less than Liverpool but i agree him playing too deep

No such thing as due. What does Firmino achieve over Vardy/Lacazette? Do you think he's a better option? Who do you have to sacrifice to get Firmino in your team? Who do you potentially miss out on?

thinking of kun arnie firmino front line as compared to lacazette he has better fixtures while leicester surely cant score enough goals compared to Liverpool. But thanks for the feedback makes me think diffenently

It depends how you look at it. If you can spend the money difference on say wilson over firmino, that extra 3mil can strengthen elsewhere with similar results.

I personally think Firmino will be a great option if Liverpool come out firing after the IB, the IB could easily revitalize them.

Camzy is right...as the current stats suggest. You are basing your choice on a 'gut' feeling which could easily end up being right.

I can get the following team for a hit (and leaves 0m itb) but contemplating whether its worth wildcarding instead in gw10.

    Patricio -- Foster
    Alonso • Robbo • Doherty • Shaw --- Awb
    Salah • Rich • Maddison • Hazard -- Camarassa
    Kun • King • Jimnez

Main concerns with this team are my strikers as i would really like Arnie and Mitro. Will possibly also get rid of foster and shaw on the wildcard.

Yes I am leaning towards the same however my current team is as follows

        Patricio foster
        Alonso Robbo shaw Doherty awb
        Salah Rich Maddison Stephens Camarasa
        Kane Kun king

Initial plan was to WC in gw10 and bring in the likes of hazard, arnie,Mitro etc which made perfect sense given I was changing a lot of things but I realised I can just do Stephens/Kane >> hazard/Jiménez (-4) and the team looks better

Feels odd taking a hit for hazard who plays united for kane in a usually high scoring derby.

If I don’t bring in hazard for a hit, then I am inclined to use the WC to get in hazard, arnie,Mitro all at once

just a question of whether to get him in for kane in gw9 and defer with the WC.

He has a team worth £103.7m and the only chip he has used is his WC.
Just because he hasn't saved £0.5m on his back up keeper when he also has a premium one it does not mean he doesn't know what he's doing.

No worries - Amen to that. Think I'm right in saying that often the managers who end up high in the ranks go against the grain in some way - remember Bharat on the Scoutcast last year talking about his heavy defence.

Most people who do something different for the sake of it fade to obscurity, you only get to see the ones who it worked out for.
He played a good wilcard after week 4 - got rid of his Liverpool players, tripled up on Chelsea and City and brought in the right budget players around them.

Don’t worry I appreciated the post. Not everyone is miserable.

Also they are trying to make out the manager knows what he’s doing when his season history shows he isn’t just bad, he’s awful. 303,737 is his best finish in 7 years. He’s clearly at the top this season through pure luck.

Also, for those that want to dispute what I’ve said. Two seasons ago my NL rival was no.1 in the world for a few weeks in November. While I was lingering between 50-100k.

I don’t need up finishing around 140 points ahead of him. I was ranked 384th and I can’t remember how low he ended up ranking.

Rank doesn’t mean a great deal at this early stage at all.

He could certainly be an exception and he’s actually planned his moves well.

I think my comment is more ranting due to the fact of so many people on here thinking that OR means a great deal at this stage.

I’ve myself see clear evidence that a lot changes after say Xmas time when we get to the business end of the season. Those thinking people in the top 10k now will be hard to catch, yes some may be but most will fall like a stone over the next few months, while many ranked 100k+ will climb the rankings and are still 100% in with a shot of the top 1k.

Just a quick shout out about the recent 'Meet the Manager' video on the FFS channel on YouTube, an enjoyable watch with great tips for FPL managers. Here's the comment I left on the video:

Another good piece of content! Loved it when Joe identified the 'top 10k effective ownership' of Hazard to solidify the use of statistics over Richard's 'old method' of approaching FF. Interested to know the effective ownership of Hazard vs Aguero now, no doubt Aguero will be more heavily backed. I suspect I will choose Hazard & hope whatever strategy Mourinho employs won't be successful!

Hazard (c) for me this week, if his and Aguero's 'top 10k effective ownership' are similar then my gut says Hazard will return more points but with hopefully the least amount of statistical risk.

    1. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      8 years, 10 days ago

I think that in the next few years of FPL people will realise that statistics still come second to sound concepts surrounding decision making.

There are far too many stats that people spend their time looking at that are largely useless. Just my opinion though.

That's sill if give the player with the highest EO the captaincy. The better option should get the armband.

I'm personally quite old school myself. Been playing since 2000 on the Yahoo game. I've never won my mini league due to immature mass transfers & obsessing over team value. Currently 70+ points clear & wanna make sure it stays that way.

      2. Pacer.
        8 years, 10 days ago

Effective ownership is a sound concept regarding decision making. You don't need to pick a successful pointscorer if you are trying to solidify a position, you just need to hedge bets/trump as many people around you as possible

        1. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
          8 years, 10 days ago

Well I should say silly in this case then IMO, because the EO will likely be similar and I think Kun is a far better option.

        Exactly haha

I'll tell you what I do to try to keep perspective. In this scenario I will take Kane out of my team, make the switch to Salah. Then looking at my 'new' team i try to build a case for keeping Salah above Kane. I try to avoid as much as possible being blinkered by my starting position or the direction my thinking is taking me. At the moment when I look at my Salah team and I think about him scoring maybe 10-12 points against the worst teams in the league, all I can see is an unsatisfactory return for a player who is so expensive. But I'm working on trying to see the argument for Salah!

      What's the total team value?

      1. Cok3y5murf
        8 years, 10 days ago

        102.2.

Why no flexibility? If I want Aguero, it's Salah + Mitro/Arnie to Aguero + Maddison or the like. If I want Sterling, it's just Salah to Sterling. Fitting Mane, Salah, Hazard as well as Aguero affects the rest of the team.

I just meant that when you don't have options on the bench then it can make things difficult.
A move like AWB & Mane to TAA & Fraser would allow you to upgrade your fodder.

Personally I'd downgrade Alonso (or Richarl to Fraser) and improve those fodders.
Once your WC is gone a couple of injuries will send you into a spin if you only have 11 outfield starters (including AwB with horrid fixtures).

All down to risk appetite though!

I'd take KDB over Mane, even with reduced minutes over the next GW or two. Mane has looked shocking over the past month and has the stats to back that up. I'd prefer a defensive Liverpool double-up rather than an attacing one.

Im leaning towards Sterling(C) rather than Salah. I think Salah can do well but after being Kaned this GWK. I think form should be looked at rather than fixture alone

I wish I already owned Sterling. I may be forced to settle for mane because price and I'm not happy about that

    A) Vardy, Kenedy, Button
    B) Lacazette, 4.4m mid, Button

    Afternoon all,

Is anybody able to point me in the direction of an editable season ticker?
    Preferably MS Excel.

I thought we were able to mix and match on the members season ticker to assess rotation options but it doesnt seem to be the case.

    Thanks all

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 10 days ago

On the season ticker - select a team name - sort by rotation.
      And/or 'change rating'

Arnie, I'm looking to sell Mitro for him in 2-3 weeks.

Decide after the next GW imo. Arnie plays Spurs who haven't looked especially watertight and Fulham have 'an easy fixture'. If Fulham look the way they have the past few games then Mitrovic is second choice behind Arnie.

I suspect I’m going to give Mané the Huddersfield and Cardiff games, and then he’s in danger of becoming KDB.

It’s a nice problem to have.

    Q1: Wildcard GK pairings.
Patricio & Fabianski seem to be the ideal rotating pair for the long haul.

    Anybody found anything better??

    Considerations:
    - Ryan is in my toughts with his fixtures.
    - Dubrav is too expensive when Yedlin is 4.5m.
    - My main issue with the Patricio & Fabianski option is that we have such attacking defensive options from WOL in Doherty in particular along with Bennet as a budget filler.

    1. XabiAlonso
      8 years, 10 days ago

I've been on fab and pat since week 1. On WC myself and can't see anything that looks better. I have benched the wrong one 2 times but cant always get it right. Pat seems like the stand out cheap goalie imo may even just go pat and 4.0

      1. SuperMario
        8 years, 10 days ago

Nice early season picks Xabi. Went Fabianski & Foster myself so hats off to you!

Yep agree that it seems to be the best option rotating. If I end up stuck for cash the 4.0 sub may also be the route to go with Pat being full time.

Would you plan on having Doherty/ Jonny/ Bennet also??

        1. XabiAlonso
          8 years, 10 days ago

I have Doherty for his price rises on WC but looking at premium defence of Alonso Robertson Mendy + trippier alongside Bennett (433). Not too sure on Doherty of he will keep it up whereas the other 4 I think will outscore similar priced mids

    Q2: Wildcard DEF.
    Mendy - Robertson - Doherty - Yedlin - Bennett

Anybody care to argue pro/ con the above backline with 4.5 rotating goalkeepers (preferrably not Patricio).

    Considerations:
    - Alonso is currently in my team at 6.8m. His ownership presents a risk as when he scores it could be red arrow.
    - TAA is cheaper than Robertson buuut not being nailed this week was a worry.
    - Mendy looked deadly early season and will likely come in.
    - Trippier in my team the last 2 weeks (nice) but TOT not convincing enough to keep.

    1. Jekori
      8 years, 10 days ago

Think all 4 are great value. Yedlin is a punt but with newcastle fixtures why not? Robertson not only a bit more nailed probably but also better baseline baps. And not near any suspension. I agree on Mendy. If i was WC i think i might take the same backline

Are you / is anybody worried about Mendy's rotation potential? Pep could so easily go three-at-the-back against easy opposition and just play Sane on the left, now that he's back in favour (at least partially). I'm on a WC and would like to get him in but am finding myself in the 'concerned' category ...

      1. George Sillett
        8 years, 10 days ago

Not worried at when when there is ample decent cheap back up.

Currently heading for 285 points based on ppg. He could miss 1 in 4 and still make an unbelievable score. Not at all concerjed by rotation

      3. SuperMario

This has crossed my mind. Especially as Sane has played well and looked dangerous when given the chance. Its a blessing in disguise that Delph was found out of sorts which means better chances of Mendy but I agree on the 3 at the back option Pep my use.

Which one would you rather have? Will do it over 2 weeks

    C. Kün Vardy Ramsey Mendy for -4

I think kdb can wait 2 weeks. See how fit he is. Pep could have exaggerated his fitness levels. But out of those, C

    Hi,

I really want hazard in my team. Current team with Trip, Alonso and Robertson, Mane and Salah, and Aguero as expensive players.

I'm thinking Mane and Alonso out Hazard and Alexander Arnold in...

    What are your thoughts? Thx!

I moved Aguero out and got Hazard in this week (not a direct swap obviously).
I don't like paying over £11m for a player who is only getting 60 mins - and I was struggling to find another way to get Hazard.

Had plan to swap Kane, Fraser, Shaw to Salah, Arnautovic , Bennett/Zabaleta this fake injury making it easier.... Will have this team -4

    Henesy, Hamer
    Alonso, Robertson, Dohery, Wb, Bennett/Zabaleta
    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Madison
    Aguero, Arnautovic, Mitrovic
