Richard Clarke is among an elite core of managers who have topped our Hall of Fame, which is based on the career achievements of those in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues.

He achieved this momentous feat just last month and after since slipping to 11th spot he is keen to once again return to the summit and secure his ambition of being number one when the season ends.

In the latest in our Meet the Manager video series he reveals how he plans to see off the competition and discusses the strategies that have earned him such incredible success over his 12 previous campaigns.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including last season’s 263rd and a 303rd rank in 2011/13, he is a competitor that cannot be underestimated. In fact, he is yet to have a poor season, with 2015/16’s end rank of 32,547th his ‘worst’ to date.

Richard (FPL team link here) discusses the importance of keeping tabs on elite managers and the season ticker. He also reveals how analysing probability can ensure managers make their own luck.

This season’s trends are also discussed, as he reveals which heavy hitter he is looking to shun on his upcoming Wildcard and how the tried and tested ‘eye-test’ let him down badly last weekend.

The chat with Richard is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips, can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here. Last week’s episode, featuring Will Thomas, is available here.

    McCarthy
    Alonso Robbo Trippier
    Mane Hazard Dilva Maddison Fraser
    Kun(C) Wilson

    Hart, Ings Bennett AWB

    2FT, 0.4itb

    How about this plan?
    This week, Dilva+Ings → Hojbjerg+Laca
then, next two weeks, Trippier → Mendy and Wilson → Murray

1 FT and £1m ITB, I want to bring in a Liverpool defender, should I do

    a) Laporte to Robbo
    b) Tomkins/Pereira to TAA

if b which one of Tomkins/Pereira?

Rest of defence is Alonso, Bennett

Tomkins as he has tough fixtures coming up.

      B. Tomkins has bad fixtures, but Pereira is OOP until he isn't (has been benched once, could be again when mids are all fit)

B, ditch Tomkins. Palace fixtures horrible from now on. You don’t want to lose a City defender and Pereira looks in good form and playing in midfield.

Looking at a defensive double up, would it be better to go with Liverpool, or Wolves.

I have TAA, and Boly currently, so it would be Gomez/Lovren (not sure who's more secure) or Doherty/Jonny

    Any advice?

Money won't stretch to Robertson I'm afraid.
I wanted Kane, and Aguero ...then I needed Hazard...an FPL won't give me an overdraft

I think it’ll be one of Gomez and Lovren alongside VVD. Worth gambling on which? Liverpool will keep more clean sheets but that won’t matter if the player you pick doesn’t start.

Just go Doherty then, nailed on, and attacking threat.

I posted these summary statistics a few days back as a consideration/case for Hazard as a permanent captain. I think they warrant reposting as we enter a period where a lot of people's transfer decisions will be based on captaincy...

    Hazard

More points than Kane, Kun, and Salah
More single goal involvements (10) than Kun (9), Kane (6), Salah (5)
Higher goal involvement as % (55) > than Kun (42), Kane (40) and Salah (33)
    Points per minute (0.13) > than Kun (0.09), Kane/Salah (0.06)
    Bonus Points (13) > Kun (6), Kane (9) and Salah (0)
Points per million > Kane, Kun and Salah.
    Highest ceilings (2018) Hazard/Kun (20)

Additionally Hazard is receiving clean sheet +1 regularly over Kane/Kun
Additionally Hazard is scoring +1 per goal over Kane/Kun
Hazard is not currently having his minutes managed like Salah/Kun
Hazard has registered an attacking return against LIV and ARS
Hazard has registered attacking returns in 3/4 away games
Hazard is not currently 1st X1 in Europe.
Hazard has not blanked at home
Talking mode averages: Hazard has 1 blank to Kuns 3, Kane/Salah 4

    Talking opponents:

MUN have conceded more goals away than HUD at home and BUR away.

There is a fair amount of confirmation bias in there
Although i agree he may become the go to captain.
What about touches in the box, SOT and big chances?

          Point 1 is valid
Then then next 6 points are all point 1 said in a different way
You haven't included stats on shots, touches, chances created, mins per chance etc.
Fairly sure hazard won't be leading in shots or SOT, that is most likely Aguero. You have only picked the stats that point to hazard.
I agree with the points backing hazard but think there are others you have left out

The bias is that obviously a player who has scored more points will have more goals, assists etc. Agree with the minutes and the lack of european commitments and him being better.

You didn't mention that he has less shots on goal and on target than Salah and Aguero but has a fantastic conversion rate that may be unsustainable.

I agree he is the best option but your entire arguments lacks any negative which is really important to come to a good decision. I have highlighted the most important negative above.

Much like the other guy you seen unable to grasp that this is not an underlying statistical analysis. These are just summary stats reviewing what comprises hazards points total.

The reason it's lacks any negative is that there is no negative in those stats.

            But these stats have value.

If you wish to then investigate his underlying stats and make projections based on that then feel free. That's a good thing to do but that is not what this is.

So what about the stats on what has actually happened regarding shots and touches in the box
I repeat, you have picked out the things in hazards favour.

              For instance

Hazard goal in a 1/2-0 Chelsea win should see a 11 point return, Aguero needs a couple of goals or a goal and assist to get 12/13 points.

Also factor in minutes for both. Hazard more likely to have 90 minutes compared to Aguero's 65/70.

        1. Pacer.

I realise this will not persuade Salah investers who are investing in the grounds that they predict an enormous upturn. I just notice a few comments about Hazard being a gamble and I think it needs to be restated that currently Kun, Kane and Salah appear to be the gambles to outscore Hazard in most given GW's

This is what we get to at the heart of the debate isn't it. How predictable are those big hauls. If they were easily predicted ( both 20s scored v HUD this season) then it would be pretty easy, but there's been numerous blanks or disappointments against whipping boys and many lower League teams. Consistency and form may well rival the captain switcheroo

          2. HamezMace
            • 11 Years

Pretty sure I can make any statement I want 🙂

I don't buy into 'essential' status, as there are several players who could fall into this category - Aguero, Kane, Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Mane, Alonso, Mendy, Robertson, we can't have all of them.

Based on the games we've seen so far - I include non PL games in this as I'm purely talking about the player, Hazard is far more central, and important to Chelsea than Salah has been for Liverpool.
I still expect Salah to have a good season, but Hazard will have a better one.

Nice work. I'm very tempted to captain him v Man Utd despite having Aguero (who I imagine will be the most heavily backed). Not that he will lack any motivation playing Man Utd as it is but with Mou in the dugout, I just sense he will pull out all the stops, ie be a bit greedier than usual. Just talked myself into it

      I totally agree with this.

Even by trawling through all the stats, I can only see 4 stats out of a 100 that would give Kun the edge, so Haz by far the best complete FPL choice at the minute.

      1. Pacer.
        • 12 Years

The really key take homes for me are his % involvement and PPM. Those extra 20 minutes he's getting over are a killer

4 goal involvements after the 70th minute

        1. joeydelucchi
          • 9 Years

very good point, people dont realise how much the games open up in the last 20 mins as pressing slows down, legs get tired or teams search for a goal etc....we need these top players to still be playing in the last 20 mins

    8. Patty

The only problem with this, is that it only factors in current performance not projected.

Sure, Hazard has easily been the best player in FPL this season, but that doesn't mean he will continue to be. Goal involvement for example. Just because he's been involved in 75% of goals when started doesn't mean that will continue.

Underlying stats are important for gauging who the best captain option will be because we're looking for future points not ones that have already passed.

Hazard's stats like conversion rate, touches in the box, shots, shots on target for example should be taken into consideration more heavily as predictors of future success.

That said, I still agree with your argument that he's a stand-out captain option this week. I'm boarding the Salah train myself this week, but can't fault anyone that decides to (c) Haz.

Analysing underlying stats is something the members can go ahead and do themselves. The purpose of this was just too try to reframe Hazard away from the premium 'underdog', 'differential' or 'homeboy' status that he has gained here over best part of a decade.

For what it's worth, his underlying stats are encouraging to me. His great goal conversion stats are unsurprising given Chelsea are creating better chances for him. We saw the same with Costa in the past.

Not after the Liecester game. And I think Lacazette has been scoring fantastic goals that frankly look unsustainable to maintain. Of course Arsenal can actually play even better than they generally are and create even more chances for him, but fixtures after Leicester aren't that great and the Arnie, Arnautovich etc. are looking pretty good options for the games to come.

I don't know, it seems rushed. Trippier and Fraser have decent fixtures this week and Fraser has one next week too, so no rush here. I'm still a bit wary of Mendy and his game time with Sane in form and Newcastle have looked downright awful.

Definitely wait until deadline to see how Fraser is, but I wouldn't rush it with these two.

Why is Glenn Murray not in more teams? Only owned by 2.6%, joint second highest scorer in the league, no top 6 teams until GW17, on penalties. HIs stats aren't bad either.

He's not a sexy option but surely merits more of a look, as he's cheaper than Mitrovic, Zaha and Arnautovic and similar to the Bournemouth strikers.

I've just brought him in for Zaha. Anyone else doing something similar?

            Goals scored:
            Murray - 5
            Mitrovic - 4

            Points
            Murray - 39
            Mitrovic - 42

            Price
            Murray - £6.5
            Mitrovic - £7.0

Whilst Mitrovic has some better underlying stats at the moment, Fulham have slightly less favourable fixtures than Brighton. Not saying Murray is a better player than Mitrovic, I'm asking the question of why he isn't in more teams given he's the joint 2nd highest scorer in the division and a solid differential at 2.6% ownership.

Fair point with Murray, but to me it seems that we have several good options at 6-7m that are bound to be a bit streaky. Nailing these choices either by form, fixtures or both is going to be critical this season. Honestly after a couple GW Arnie and Murray have the fixtures and seemingly form to be excellent, but it can end fast with these mid-level forwards.

Because People have Wilson and Mitrovich. And Jiminez is a cheaper option who is also doing well. And all decisions have to be made on future expectations. I agree he is a great option, but somebody with Mitrovich, Wilson, King might not see the shift as very beneficial at this stage. Wilson's and King's fixtures turn after two games. If he scores in the next two, then his ownership will skyrocket for sure.

I'd still safely say that Murray could well be on more points than Mitro come GW17 - Murray has a better track record in the PL. I'm only keeping Mitro for the next few fixtures, he was invisible against Arsenal and will most probably be redundant when facing good opposition taking into account Fulham won't even be able to get the service into him.

Good points above...Jiminez was my other option as I feel Mitrovic will fade (cos Fulham are rotten), Zaha has horrible fixtures, Arnautovic will blow hot and cold, and Bournemouth's good run doesn't seem sustainable.

It's a differential punt, as all of these players are likely to be streaky. I guess there are many options to look at in the bracket and Murray is the least fashionable hence the low ownership.

Give it a couple of weeks. I suspect that as Mitrovic, Wilson/King and Jiménez fixtures shift you’ll see ownership of Arnautovic and Murray increase.

How would this look from GW 11 onwards?

    Ederson (Hamer)
    Alonso Robertson Mendy Doherty (AWB)
    Salah Hazard KDB Richarlison Maddison
    Arnautovic Ings (Kamara)

Captaincy between Salah and Hazard and Ings/Doherty on the bench each week?

Was all set to WC, but now thinking a bad idea...

    Current Squad

    Hamer / Foster
    Alonso / TAA / Doherty / AWB / Daniels
    Salah / Hazard / Fraser / Richarlison / Lamela
    Kun / Arnie / Wilson

Looking at a WC i wouldnt change that much and i know in a couple of weeks the landscape changes for Bournemouth/Palace.

KDB/Laca are ones id want, not certain on TAA start security after Sunday and feel like giving Salah next couple to fire before shipping if doesnt work out. Lamela was a punt this week gone wrong btw 😉

Thoughts on playing it or waiting it out?

Thoughts on the below options? On WC

    A). Aguero, TAA, Alonso
    B). Vardy, Pereira/Doherty, Mane

Have Salah and Robertson potentially as the other 2 pool players. Debating going 4 at the back doubling on pool defense or a 352 doubling on pool attack. Do feel like Vardy has great potential over the next run of games.

    Cheers

      The options don't match.

Pick your Liverpool players then work around that.

        Not sure what you mean.

The question really is whether to double on pool attack or pool defence.
The options don't match because its either 442 or 352

They don't match because even if those are the options your bench will dictate your structure. Basically, we can't compare Alonso and Mane.

          Double on Pool defense.

Yeah I don't really understand still, you can compare them imo it's simply a case of deciding which you think will outscore the other.

Thanks for suggesting which option you'd pick though.

Is there somewhere you can see the points threshold to get into the current top 10,000 - top 100,000 etc on this site (or others)

Hi, anyone going Salahless despite good Pool fixtures?

Yep, easier for me as not had him the whole time. I do think there are better options though, i.e. double Pool defence

Nope. Got him in on a WC for the next 4, cardiff, huddersfield and fulham, i want atleast 2 explosive hauls or ill just downgrade him to KDB.

While I can definitely make a good team without him, I want to captain him.

No. Now is the time to have him (if he does not do well over these next few then he really has to go though)

I've been Salahless since the beginning but will be very likely getting him on WC

I feel getting Arnie for Wilson was the biggest mistake i've made this season. Can't get him back now can I? Urghh.

Why not? If your squad is solid get Wilson for Southampton/Fulham, then switch back to Arnie

I would do but my 1ft is gonna be Trip --> TAA after the break.

Excellent video. Thanks Richard for sharing your experience, I found it extremely useful. Great questions from Jonty too. Not convinced that omitting Salah is the way to go when playing the probabilities and Liverpool upcoming fixtures but other than that I like the approach to the game. Interesting stuff.
