It’s a welcome return for our Captain Sensible article as the return of Fantasy Premier League action is now very close.

The second international break of the season has given us plenty of time to weigh up our skipper decisions for Gameweek 9.

As per usual, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah all figure in the debate. We’ll be looking at the results of our poll as well as the underlying data behind the options themselves, their teams and their respective Gameweek 9 opposition.

Captain Poll

Not for the first time this season, Sergio Aguero (Ā£11.3m) is the runaway leader of the captain poll. At the time of writing, the Manchester City striker boasts a 44.69% share of the vote and was considerably clear of second-placed Eden Hazard (Ā£11.3m).

The Chelsea man has just under 13% backing thus far. Both he and Aguero may have been boosted by the fact that Mohamed Salah (Ā£12.8m) is an injury doubt for Gameweek 9 when it came to the voting process.

Hazard especially has also been more reliable than the Egyptian this season and leads his rival on goal involvements by a score of ten to five. That is why the easier fixture for Salah is not so enticing, even if Hazard is facing Manchester United.

Interestingly, Raheem Sterling (Ā£11.2m) is still yet to trouble this season’s big three. He sits fourth in the vote with a little under 7% of the votes in our poll, despite blanking in just one of his Premier League appearances in 2018/19 and outscoring Aguero in every home match. That could indicate that many of those who participated in the poll are struggling to fit him into their squads given their current structure and are looking elsewhere for the captaincy.

Alexandre Lacazette‘s (Ā£9.7m) recent form has him hot on Sterling’s trail in the captain poll. He currently edges Harry Kane‘s (Ā£12.5m) 4.55% share of the vote with a backing of 4.63% at the time of writing.

Surprisingly, up next is Marcos Alonso (Ā£7.0m) whose 2.48% score is nearly more than double that of Alexandar Mitrovic (Ā£6.9m), Callum Wilson (Ā£6.4m) and Richarlison (Ā£6.8m).

    Ederson - Hamer
    Alonso - Doherty - AWB - Tomkins - Bednarek
    Salah - Mane - Hazard - Maddison - Stephens
    Kun - Ings - Wilson

Tomkins, Mane -> Mendy, Fraser for free? Am I mad?

It's something to consider but I reckon Salah does really well tomorrow if Shaqiri starts, which seems a possibility.

Fraser and King is doubt. Do you agree that this will hurt Wilson's output? I was planning to bring Wilson in for this GW but the news really pull me back. What you think?

    1. MTPockets

Not really. Brooks and Stanislas (wilson owner)

Of course there will be replacing players. But accept the fact that Fraser and King are the main men feeding Wilson. Brooks and Stanislas will give different chemistry...

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 9 months ago

Yes it's hard to gauge. Tried comparing Stan vs Fraser chances created but not a meaningful enough overlap in their games played last season. Plus don't know how things would go if King out as well tbf.

14th September: Eddie Howe has said that Ryan Fraser is a doubt for Saturday’s home match with Leicester City after picking up a hamstring injury during the international break. “Ryan Fraser had a hamstring problem so has been working with our medical team since he returned here.

19th October: Eddie Howe has said that there will be late decisions made on attacking duo Ryan Fraser and Joshua King for the game with Southampton. "We'll have to see with Ryan," said the Cherries manager. "He's been carrying a hamstring injury for a few weeks, we'll have to see and make a late decision on him, but he's certainly a doubt."

Hmm. Interesting that can't remember Howe mentioning him as a doubt between international breaks if he's carrying that hamstring problem šŸ˜€

Josh King owner here - is anybody else worried about him playing this GW? May have to do a complete squad overhaul if he isn't fit (still have a WC).

I think he will be involved, but you never know.

Thanks, me too - but I also have this hope for Salah and then I have Daniels and a suspended Holebas to contend with!

Why a complete overhaul? Just bench him for a week or swap to Wilson. Seems a bit extreme.

Because I have other injury problems in Salah (who I've kept because I think he will play) and Daniels with a suspension to Holeabs. This meansmy bench players are very weak if King, currently in my 1st 11, does not play. may as well use the WC or take a -4 to get him and Daniels out.

Do not use a WC instead of a -4.

Well obviously it does seem a bit night vs day but many people have already used them and I could set myself up for some nice fixture swings - for example, I do not own a Liverpool defender.

I think I will hold and hope.

    What's better?

    A-) Laporte + Schürrle
    B-) Benett + Sigurdsson
    C-) 4.8 defender + Richarlison

    Thanks.

    Pickford - Hennesey
    Alonso - Robertson - WanBisakka - Shaw - Doherty
    Pedro - Hazard - Salah - Fraser - Masuaku
    Agüero - Mitrovic - King

Do you think Richarlison is better choice than Siggy? Siggy has great stats, Richarlison OOP for the moment tho.

I would be surprised if a broken finger/hand would keep him out, Vardy played with a broken wrist last season I think.

Yeah probably but think they could win match without him this week.

Moura & Kane > Dilva & Kun for a hit?

    Would give me this team:

    Patricio
    Alonso / Trippier / TAA
    Hazard / Mané / Dilva / Richarlison
    Kun / Vardu / Mitro

    Hamer / Bennett / AWB / Billing
