It’s a welcome return for our Captain Sensible article as the return of Fantasy Premier League action is now very close.

The second international break of the season has given us plenty of time to weigh up our skipper decisions for Gameweek 9.

As per usual, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah all figure in the debate. We’ll be looking at the results of our poll as well as the underlying data behind the options themselves, their teams and their respective Gameweek 9 opposition.

Captain Poll

Not for the first time this season, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the runaway leader of the captain poll. At the time of writing, the Manchester City striker boasts a 44.69% share of the vote and was considerably clear of second-placed Eden Hazard (£11.3m).

The Chelsea man has just under 13% backing thus far. Both he and Aguero may have been boosted by the fact that Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is an injury doubt for Gameweek 9 when it came to the voting process.

Hazard especially has also been more reliable than the Egyptian this season and leads his rival on goal involvements by a score of ten to five. That is why the easier fixture for Salah is not so enticing, even if Hazard is facing Manchester United.

Interestingly, Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) is still yet to trouble this season’s big three. He sits fourth in the vote with a little under 7% of the votes in our poll, despite blanking in just one of his Premier League appearances in 2018/19 and outscoring Aguero in every home match. That could indicate that many of those who participated in the poll are struggling to fit him into their squads given their current structure and are looking elsewhere for the captaincy.

Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.7m) recent form has him hot on Sterling’s trail in the captain poll. He currently edges Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) 4.55% share of the vote with a backing of 4.63% at the time of writing.

Surprisingly, up next is Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) whose 2.48% score is nearly more than double that of Alexandar Mitrovic (£6.9m), Callum Wilson (£6.4m) and Richarlison (£6.8m).

Well made the Mane to Sterling switch due to price changes and am now quite anxious about the pending pressers.

If Salah/Mane are fit to go and Zaha ruled out, would you WC this team or take a hit? 0.4m ITB with 0 FT left

Why didn't you just wait? There's enough cash there to cover 1 price drop. You could potentially be spunking your wildcard for a price change.

To be honest I really think Mane wont play after having surgery even though it is only a hand injury. Sterling v Burnley isn't a bad replacement and can always do the opposite next week when Sterling is away to Spurs and Mane home to Cardiff.

In relation to the WC, I just feel I have held it too long already (although OR 11.7k is still good) and need to address McCarthy Shaw Kante King and Zaha

Sorry that comes across like I'm having a go at you there. I'd have just waited for some more information about Mane. If Mane is available and Zaha is out then it won't have been worth it imo.

          1. The Left Duke #3
            8 years, 21 days ago

Very true and you are prob right that I should have waited. For some reason around midnight, I just pulled the trigger even though my options all week were Shaw to Mendy or Zaha to Mitrovic.

How did you know that Sterling was 100% going to play.......don't you think he has a risk of being rested after 180mins played during the IB and CL next week ??....and would you not want Mane v Cardif next week ??

      1. The Left Duke #3
        8 years, 21 days ago

I just think his form makes him undroppable and Sane will be benched if Mendy plays. Pep doesn't trust Mahrez either. Can always do Sterling back to Mane next week anyway if things go pear shaped

Even for another 5 moves? Although King looks set for the next 2 and can potentially become Arnie then.
Maybe Zaha to Mitrovic for a -4?

      1. The Left Duke #3
        8 years, 21 days ago

Ha no i'm good, a rare good start to the season. Normally i'm outside the 1 million mark and captaining Bolasie as a differential lol.

I'll make a late decision on a hit or WC after I hear more on Lpool and Zaha. King doubtful too and don't want Shaw Kante or McCarthy so WC might be worth it

        1. Johan Queef
          8 years, 21 days ago

Take a look at my team! I’m not sure how I’ve held onto my WC til now. Similar issues to you but less good everywhere else! I blame Salah...I keep holding onto him when I could get rid and WC into a better team.

          1. The Left Duke #3
            8 years, 21 days ago

Stop...I kept faith with Salah over Hazard from GW4-7 even though the fixtures and form suggested to ship. Couldn't take it anymore and shipped last week and captained Hazard and avoided Kane.

            1. Johan Queef
              8 years, 21 days ago

Aha same but did Mané to Hazard and the captain paid off. Salah is still the thorn in my side (as a Liverpool fan too!)

Thanks for the reassurance. Leaning towards the same..

Do you think Fulham will do well against Cardiff? Cardiff haven't won a single game and are at home, the will do all they can to stop Fulham and nick a goal. Also they had a decent record in the first 3 games of the season. What do you think?

I think both teams will see it as a winnable game and will be going for it, Fulham should also revert back to the 4-3-3 that was going well for them, at least in attacking terms, should hopefully be some goals in it.

What Gregor says that is the logical answer. However, I may just go Arnie now. To save a transfer down the line.

Also, there's no guarntee Fulham beat Cardiff, In fact I fancy Cardiff. There's no reason why Arnie can't score v Spurs.

Not necessarily - if his chosen alternative does as well then it makes no difference.

        1. Not again Shirley
          8 years, 21 days ago

Agreed. I would look at this in reverse and say every time Aguero does nothing your ranking will shoot up.

11 m on a player that only plays 60 minutes is not great.

Saying all that, as I had such a large lead in my ML (OR 5000) I decided to do the Kane-Aguero hokey cokey so bringing back Aguero part of the plan but not overly happy with it.

Tempted to downgrade to Laca and get Salah back in next week for some better Pool fixtures otherwise cannot afford. Also have owned Sterling since wk 3 so at least have some City coverage.

    3. grumpyman
      8 years, 21 days ago

Hmm, not sure I like it. Bennett over AWB on a wildcard for sure. Fraser a risk this week and fixtures turn soon. Too light up too and Alonso / Salah sucking up too much cash. Very different to my WC this week, but that's probably good given my history! Good luck.

People seem to favor Sterling but Salah faces 3 defences that are ranked in top 3 for goals conceded in next 4 fixtures

      I would wait

    3. MTPockets

Yeah probably, but I'm still considering it if Fraser may not play (because also need to lose Pedro).

  19. ZeBestee
    8 years, 21 days ago

If Fraser is a doubt, you would think Stanislas would replace him and Howe would not take a chance. Ship Fraser? He wouldn't get 18 points again would he?

      Doubt it.

"If not this match then hopefully the next one. Isn't long term". This Howe comment less positive than last (18pts) around..

KDB will probably come in as a sub With 30 min left of the game..

Yeah, I would do it. I would also consider playing Maddison over 1 of the Bournemouth attackers.

I'm trying to find the point in bringing Salah

    4. RAFA THE GAFFA
      8 years, 21 days ago

Salah but I don’t own Kun. If I did it would be a very close call / headache

      1. Pieterke30
        8 years, 21 days ago

Do you have Sterling, KDB? Or no City attacker?

        1. RAFA THE GAFFA
          8 years, 21 days ago

          None

    5. Pieterke30
      8 years, 21 days ago

Salah I think. Eventhough I suppose there is a risk he gets taken out early because of small injury...

Dont have Kun. If I bring him back, dunno what I will do.

    Bench one:

    Doherty - WAT (H)
    TAA - HUD (A)
    Trippier - WHU (A)
    Alonso - MUN (H)

Already have Hazard, but no coverage on any of the other teams.

Top of ML, all options in B would be a differential to closest rivals.

Play it safe with A or go B?

    A) Mendy, Salah, Arnie
    B) TAA, Sterling, Vardy

    1. Rage Against The Raheem

I would go B, too early to play safe imo.

      B. Get arnie in a couple of weeks

    Final decision on my wildcard:

    Siggy or richarlison? Coin flip?

    1. HurriKane

      Richarlison

    2. MTPockets

Siggy if they were the same price, so depends what you'd otherwise do with the £ difference.

        This

    3. Toby Lerone

Siggy doesn't allow much movement. Jimenez can become arnie a lot easier in a few weeks with rich...

Which two to play this GW?

    A) Maddison (Ars, A)
    B) Boly (Wat, H)
    C) Zaha (Eve, A)
    D) Pereyra (Wol, A)

    1. HurriKane

thoughts on pva > mendy (ft) here or unnecessary? would bench alonso for mendy if I made the move, but feel it could pay off with concerns around fraser starting/or not

    henny
    robertson - alonso - doherty
    hazard - moura - fraser - richarlison
    kane(c) - mitrovic - vardy

    hamer - pva - awb - guendouzi
