Voting in the Gameweek 13 captain poll has now opened, with this weekend’s set of matches perhaps not offering one glaringly obvious candidate for the armband.

With Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) and Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) home and away fixtures dovetailing nicely until this point, those who like to play it safe with their captaincy picks have had a fairly easy ride for the first three months of the season.

Manchester City and Liverpool are both away from home in the same weekend for the first time in 2018/19 however, and while West Ham United and Watford aren’t overly formidable opposition, the fixtures are potentially tricky enough to make us consider other alternatives for the captaincy.

Aguero’s indifferent form away from home is well-documented, with the Argentinean striker having registered only one attacking return (a goal at Cardiff City in Gameweek 6) in five appearances on the road this season.

What should be noted, though, is that four of those five away fixtures were against Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool and Spurs.

Salah meanwhile is yet to register an attacking return in five appearances against the clubs currently sitting in the top half of the Premier League table but did of course score four goals against the Hornets (at Anfield) in March.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) and Sadio Mane (£9.9m) are two very viable armband alternatives from the two title-chasing clubs.

Sterling has featured in all five of City’s away fixtures this season and is averaging more FPL points than Aguero (4.8 versus 2.6) on the road.

Mane is doing likewise compared to Salah, averaging 5.0 points in away matches compared to the Egyptian’s 4.12.

The Senegalese midfielder has blanked in six of his last seven Premier League starts, however.

A home fixture against Cardiff City has seen Richarlison (£6.9m) take an early lead in our poll, with the Brazilian midfielder seemingly set to continue “out of position” up front against the Bluebirds and having plundered 15 points in his last home league game.

Injury doubts and yellow flags still cloud our judgement of several captaincy candidates, with Anthony Martial‘s (£7.6m) availability for the weekend still in question after he pulled out of the France squad with a thigh injury.

Martial is certainly FPL’s form player: the French midfielder has scored on six occasions and registered an assist in his last five Premier League starts.

Crystal Palace, United’s opponents this weekend, haven’t won a league match since Gameweek 5.

Glenn Murray (£6.6m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.8m) are two cut-price forwards who enjoy an appealing home fixture in Gameweek 13 and would be “sensible” differential picks in such a wide-open Gameweek, while the true mavericks among us may even be eyeing up Matt Doherty (£4.9m) – if fit – given that the league’s lowest goalscorers, Huddersfield Town, visit Molineux on Sunday.

Joe and I discuss the various captaincy options for Gameweek 13 in the video below, with our regular “Captain Sensible” members’ piece to follow later in the week.

    a) Play Camarasa-bench Mendy+Barkley and save ft.

    b) Mendy to Digne for free and play him.

    c) Mendy+Barkley to Digne+Richarlison for a hit.

    Thanks a lot guys.

Keepers are slightly different though. Plenty of saves can see them rack up the points. Maybe a cheeky pen save in there as well 😉

That's great but my concern would be the fitness of Alexis, Lukaku and Lingard because Martial is always one bad game away from getting dropped and the mentioned 3 seem to be Mourinho's favourites.

      1. Hotdogs for Tea

This - Mourinho’s starters upfront before injury gave Martial his opportunity ... Alexis, Lukaku and Lingard

      2. Hands Guber
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Lukaku is injured/out of form and currently out of the team though - Sanchez also (despite scoring on Int duty) - Lingard could definitely come into the reckoning but Mourinho needs Martial right now.

That said, I was only worried about this weekend in any event so at least he's in training and an early transfer MAY not be punished.

I would look at AWB for mendy. Cry Pal fixtures inprove immensely after this weekend. You have two heavy hitting defenders as it is. I would prefer to start duffy this eeek also so the mendy replacement doesnt have to play.

Richarlison and Martial are hard to ignore at this moment in time. Either of those should be fine

Bernardo might be injured so monitor Pep's press conference, and he's only a sure starter till KDB returns, then his minutes may be reduced. If you want a nailed City midfielder - go for David Silva.

Hi guys. Help needed on WC

    Hart
    Dunk Laporte Taa
    Fraser Mahrez Salah Martial Rich
    Kun Jiminez

    Hamer Alonso WB Arnie

    Any obvious problems...

Bit of a benching headache as it stands.

Mahrez > 4.5m would cure that with the option of Hazard for one of Rich/Martial in time. Mahrez just seems like a real gambit

Eden Hazard's fixtures until the end of the year:

    Spurs (a)
    Fulham (H)
    Wolves (a)
    Man City (H)
    Brighton (a)
    Leicester (H)
    Watford (a)
    Palace (a)

    - 5 away games in 8.
    - Faces 2 of last seasons top 4.
    - 1 assist in his last 3 outings.

I think I'll be keeping him up until Fulham (they may be rejuvinated under Ranieiri so it may turn out to be a banana skin) and assess from there.

Definitely don't think I'll be captaining him in any of those 8 games - in the week Hazard has Fulham (H), Sterling and Aguero have Bournemouth (H) and in the week Hazard has Leicester (H), Sterling and Aguero have Palace (H).

Crucial 2 GW's for Hazard owners me thinks - given how well mid price mids are performing and the fixture swing which may see us invest into Arsenal and Spurs attackers/strikers.

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 8 months ago

I'm coming to the same conclusion. Sold him for Mane, which mostly backfired, but not sure about getting him back. Feel like just loading up on Mci instead, and maybe Spurs later. Morata may even be a better (cheaper) route to Che goals if form continues.

Hazard is doing now what made me not pick him even after his first hauls against Bournemouth and Newcastle. The guy is explosive but can go missing during games and come out with nothing. I say this as a Chelsea fan. I'm keeping him for Fulham as you said and re-assessing from that point.

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Re-assessing after Fulham seems to be the most sensible approach. As you say, he goes missing and that's quite annoying when you invest 11m or so in him in FPL.

I am trying to justify avoiding him at thr minute but his two bit hauls hurt me bad especially as rivals have him and captained. Tricky one for those that dont own. Much easier to keep him if you own. Those on WC are unsure also.....

Great analysis there and I agree with those points. But the same case can be made for Salah from GW15-16 onwards and he’s around 2m more expensive.

Chelsea’s fixtures also better than Pool long term.

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Yep, you can make the same argument for Salah. Although I do feel a lot more comfortable captaining Salah in any GW as opposed to Hazard. Maybe not enough trust / points to justify their prices at the moment though 🙂

I think the first test is GW15 Kane. Next 2 gameweeks are key for all 3 of Salah, Hazard & Aguero. Whoever underperforms could see sales to enable Kane.

but hazard is our lynchpin and our attack is down the lhs.U can see that the matches hazard blanked 2 nil-nil draws and 2 setpiece goals. So if hazard fails to hauls then chelsea will go from 3rd to 8th then lol.I am guareenting he would not troll from a fpl perspective this season as we are playing a system that relies on his ouput and him having more time in final-third and not coming deep and creating from midfield and is a season-keeper and highest pointsscorer or else we would not score goals from open play lool

Good post. Non owner here too, in fact I haven't owned him all season. Fulham is the one I'd bring him in for but I'm really not keen on the Wolves and City games that follow. The captain point is also key, if you're not going stick the armband on an 11m+ player is it even worth owning them?

There is a bigger case here for downgrading Alonso here than selling Haz.Haz actually does well against good team as he has more space.

Alonso to a 5.5/5.0 and Richarlison to a Dilva/Eriksen is that way to go imo

I have a choice to make betwen Hazard & Jimenez, and Aguero & Martial.

I'll be WCing GW15/16 and my choice at the mo is to opt for Aguero/Martial and go sofa shopping ready for Hazard v Fulham! I'm hoping Ranieri will bring new manager syndrome and keep Haz quiet

Hazard can do well in any game, always in line for baps and is on pens - this year he's like to have a 200 + total points tally, as with any other year Chelsea are playing well - sure he's had a little back injury and has been quiet but don't be fooled!

this is it .Sarri's system overloads lhs.Hazard and alonso will be in the points any gw and is futile to select them for a few gws and ship them out for some other.Either keep them as a season-keeper(unless injured) if u believe chelsea would do well and if u believe chelsea will flop from now on ship them out

      Really good points.

I don't think Hazard is fixture proof enough compared to other midfielders in and around a similar price bracket.

Plus, like you say, there seem to be better options for those weeks. Chelsea dont seem to be a team that are going to score loads and especially not against mid-table opposition.

Think we who had Hazard for his purple patch got somewhat lucky and I'm not too sure he's going to represent value for money over those fixtures.

I think this is a classic case of overthinking the situation (something I often do) and over expecting points each and every week.

Hazard has featured in 11 EPL games this season and has 11 attacking returns alongside 1.18 bonus points per game.

He is the focal point/talisman of one of the best sides in the league. It’s not often you get this type of talisman in such a top side. For instance Aguero/Sterling/KDB would often split the focal points of the Man City attack.

Everything runs though Hazard and he also has pens. If you expect Chelsea not to score in the above games then Hazard may be worth moving on. But if you believe Chelsea will score goals in those games then Hazard is the most likely asset to be involved.

I see Chelsea scoring in virtually every game they play this season, so for me I wouldn’t even slightly consider losing Hazard.

Also Hazard will often get between 9-11 points for one goal with his bonus/cleansheet potential.

      2. JohnnyMagrinho
        7 years, 8 months ago

Think the main case for Sterling over Hazard is the kind of team Sterling plays for.

There's simply more goals on offer at City and on a more regular basis, against pretty much whoever they play.

Even if Sterling plays 30 minutes he's likely to be involved in a goal. And City really don't know when to stop scoring. Now that he's seemingly back in the fray, Sterling seems to be more of a guaranteed route to points.

Chelsea are more likely to draw 0-0 or struggle than City. There's no way City would draw 0-0 with Everton at home or West Ham away for example.

Still, Hazard is a good option to have just think long term Sterling is ahead. Only area of concern for me would be the fact he's on pens and will get bonus points at a higher rate (if Chelsea perform). Saying that, Chelsea can easily grind out a 1/2-0 win with the bonus going to defenders and Hazard maybe getting just an assist.

Everton’s defence has done well and improved over the past 4 gameweeks their stats are comparable to City & Pool .

Digne on some set pieces and is creating a lot of chances. At 4.8m I don’t see it as a huge risk.

      I'd lose Robbo...

Rather reinvest in the hope of getting a Kun Kane forward line

So Martial a st have differential now - or can Fanderson match his points over Xmas?
For me, that's the difference between Schindler/Balbuena or Digne/Keane as Mendy replcaments.
