Arnautovic Replacements

With Marko Arnautovic (£7.1) limping off in West Ham’s 3-1 win against Cardiff in the first half with a hamstring injury, a lot of FPL-managers will have to look elsewhere for points from their strikers over the festive fixtures. Manuel Pellegrini confirmed in his press conference on Thursday that Arnautovic looks to be out for the rest of the year.

I will focus on potential replacements for Arnautovic that is either in his price-bracket or below, as upgrading him to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.2), Harry Kane (£12.5) or Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6) would mean a double transfer for many people, redistributing money from midfield or defence.

The options

The cherry-draped elephant in the room here has to be Callum Wilson (£7.0)… What can be said about Wilson that has not already been said? He just. Keeps. Getting. Points. He’s currently in my squad for the second time this season (why oh why did I ever transfer him out?) and over the course of 15 gameweeks he has managed eight goals and eight assists, surpassing Harry Kane (£12.5) by eight points and trailing Aubameyang by just one point at the top of the forward charts. As he’s already in 39.5% of the FPL-squads, even with the tough fixtures, it’s probably wise to stop trying to be clever and just get Wilson in.

If you already have Wilson or are trying to go the differential route, Joshua King (£6.3) could be an option. Probably still on pens, he’s scored five goals and assisted one in 12 gameweeks (missing out in GW 10-12 through injury). Sitting in a meagre 2.6% of the FPL squads he could be an option for either doubling up or going without Wilson. On balance though I’d say you probably want the real deal in Wilson until he drops off in form or gets injured. King will still score points, but likely the 0.7 million saved just isn’t worth it.

Wolverhampton’s main striker Raúl Jiménez (£6.0) is still a really, really cheap option. He’s got four goals and six assists so far this season in 15 games. Although he’s only played the full 90 minutes on eight occasions, he has so far started every game. One thing that is very much in favour of Jiménez is the “trickle-factor”, he’s only returned a double-digit haul once this season (against Tottenham) but he seems to find a way to get some sort of a return more often than not. This makes him valuable both as a starter and a rotation option/coming off the bench when the gameweeks start to pile up over the holidays.

The yin and yang striker of this season, Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6), has scored a healthy tally of seven goals and three assists so far this season. He’s blanked in eight out of 15 games though with a particularly barren spell between GW5-GW12, only netting one goal, one assist and creating frustrations for the FFS community. He also looked a bit disinterested in this period and it could simply be that he was not in a great frame of mind at the time. Since Claudio Ranieri took over the reins Mitrovic has two goals and one assist, in three games. He remains one yellow card away from a one-game suspension though.

The 35 year old Brighton striker Glenn Murray (£6.7) keeps doing what he does best, score goals. He’s currently on eight goals and zero assists for the season. Brighton’s fixtures are quite bad though, and he picked up a slight shoulder injury in the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace. Apparently, it is not looking terrible but he is still a doubt for the next game.

Newcastle United’s Salomón Rondón (£5.7) could be a cheeky option in the short term, facing off against Wolves, Huddersfield and Fulham in the next three gameweeks. After that it gets a lot worse though with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham all in the space of seven gameweeks, with Watford and Cardiff sandwiched in between. If you want to roll the dice with Rondón it really is now or a lot later (if ever).

With Arnautovic out and West Ham’s fixtures still looking great one might be tempted to go for Lucas Pérez (£6.2) or Javier Hernandez (£6.2) in a straight swap. Both could come good but also come with their own set of benefits and drawbacks. Pérez has only played 157 minutes in total this season and Javier Hernandez rarely makes it past 70 minutes, only managing that once so far. Andy Carrol (£5.4) is also (for the moment at least) fit again and could challenge for a spot in the team, although realistically not for long. I’d say it’s probably better to look elsewhere, but if you really want one of them Pérez looked good and should see more minutes now.

Dirt-cheap Fulham striker Aboubakar Kamara (£4.3) scored his first goal of the season in GW15. Having only played two full games all season he remains a huge rotation risk, but Ranieri could potentially be looking to use Kamara to a larger extent than his predecessor. He’s more or less just there to sit at the last spot of your bench at this point in time though so if going for a formation change, it could work out.

Conclusion

I think it will be difficult to go wrong with either one of Callum Wilson or Raúl Jiménez over the holidays, both look fantastic options. For me Wilson just about edges it even with the fixtures, but I already have him so personally I will put my money where my mouth is and go for Jiménez as an Arnie-replacement. Mitrovic looks a decent option as well and could potentially be rejuvenated under Ranieri, but the yellow card issue is a problem I just don’t want to have right now. He could of course do a Diego Costa and walk the tightrope all the way to the new year, but I find that somewhat unlikely unless he’s really turned a corner attitude wise.

So who are you going for and why? Let me know in the comment section below!

The above article nicely sums up the arguments for many of the picks. Is there anything you disagree with? Which point is most compelling?

Who have you gone for, or are you still undecided? What has helped or hindered your decision?

Which of the cheaper options do you prefer and why?

Personally speaking, Geoff, I wouldn’t go with Wilson in light of those fixtures. Yes, I know he’s been great but Bournemouth’s fixtures are not great for sometime now.

I think the article coule have included the option of dropping down to someone like Kamara and going 3-5-2. Felipe being an obvious example.

I agree - but Wilson hurt me huge when I sold him for Arnie so I'm not sure I can analyze him properly.

I already had Jimenez and Kane so I took a -4 to help fund getting Lacazette in. Wilson and Mitrovic were the two I considered but in the end I could't resist Laca and there are doubts (for me) on Wilson and Mitrovic

          Good moves.

I understand where you are coming from with Wilson. I may have a blindspot for him as well. Me and him have history for sure.

When Bournemouth got promoted I had him from get-go and sold him just before his hatrick against West Ham.

A little off-subject but I am on a WC at the moment - do you think Aubameyang is worth the extra over Lacazette?

Not really.. I think it's a lot closer than it seems, if Lacazette plays which I think he will. It seems that midfield needs the money there instead, particularly if you have Kane too

      Laca.
Arsenal's great run of fixtures has helped.
Out of the cheaper options I would rank it Wilson, Jimenez, Mitrovic, Perez, others.

Jimenez. But the choice was simple for me; it allowed Hazard to Sterling with my FT, which the other candidates would not have been able to.

I've gone for Jimenez as it allows me to have Auba rather than Laca. Plus I can't bring myself to lose Fraser, who I've had since he was 5.6, so doubling up on Bournemouth seems a step too far given the fixtures.

If it were me, I would be choosing between Mitrovic and Rondon (partially because I already own Jiménez). Of the players listed, I think Mitrovic might be the most talented player, but I worry his team often starves him of service, and I don’t think we know enough to decide whether Ranieri has made marked improvement. The case for Rondon is more about his price (cheapest of the listed options), security of game time, and the likelihood that he ends up within 5-10 points of the other players on this list through the new year. Buying him is more about giving yourself the most flexibility to upgrade elsewhere (most likely in midfield).

People still seem to be in denial with Wilson, or just strangely releuctant to get him in.

He's scored at City, and against Utd. He has Wolves and Brighton after Liverpool before Spurs and Utd away. Nothing suggests he can't score in those games. The bloke has 8 goals and 8 assists in 15 games.

        Yup. Pure denial.

He is 10 points off beating his 2017/18 score having played 600 minutes less.

If he hits 200 points for the season he would need another 108 points at 4.7ppm.

He’s currently ticking along at 6.1ppm.

        200 points for 6m = 33 points per £1m spent. Crazy.

For me it boils down to:
      Wilson
+ Great form, great stats.. His fixtures except LIV are not really that bad, when you look at recent defensive team stats. wol-BHA-tot-mun-WAT are all playable fixtures.
      - Others have better fixtures. And I would double up with Fraser, too much BOU?

      VS
      Lacazette
+ Great stats, higher ceiling, great fixtures
      - I would double up with Auba.. Not nailed really? Played 45 and 22 mins last two. For me his price compared to Wilson's very much limits my options to get MCI/TOT players in next round

I have looked at these as well but don't consider them now:
Mitrovic (bad next fixture, 4 yellows + hate him from earlier experience..), Chicarito (Not really a good player, and not nailed?), Rondon (bad fixtures and not really proven this season)

stuck between Mitrovic (just the card situation) or Kamara to load midfield - bringing in Son for Gunnarson going 3-5-2.
Wanted to make moves this week but Arnie made a mess of it.

He will probably be the main starter, my issue with him is that he offers little if anything if he can’t get in the box.

Perez is traditionally more creative and Big AC can do what he wants.

Can't see past Wilson at the moment. Stats, points and minutes are in his favour compared to all the others. Of course he could fail in those difficult fixtures but I'd rather have him in a difficult fixture than ie Rondon in an easy

Yeah, but it's less decisive than other factors. There are many examples of potential suspensions becoming almost irrelevant; Costa got his 4th yellow of the season in September 2015, but he wasn't suspended until 8 goals and 4 assists later.

I envy your disregard of Laca's minutes in his last three. Why are you convinced he will play more?

To be honest, I'm tempted by Mkhitaryan, just because he's 2.9 cheaper.

Mitro, on the other hand, is a sure starter.

Great article Mertens! Personally agree with your assessment, but still would prefer to avoid Wilson until the fixtures mellow. For that reason, I took the opportunity to completely rejig and bring in Aubameyang and Lacazette for Arnie and Vardy (also injured). I'll revisit the cheaper brackets at a later date

      Already had Kane & Jimenez
      My thinking process =
1.West ham strikers can be covered by F.Anderson. Chicharito vs Perez is a coin toss.
      2. Wilson bad fixtures (I know, form over fixture debate)
      3. This left the arsenal strikers vs Mitro. Mitro is on the suspension tight rope and fixtures are average but great value.
      4. Laca vs Auba debate - Auba is more explosive but less effective playing LW than ST. Points per Million I feel that Laca provides better ROI. Also allows you to have a better midfield if you already have Kane.
      = Arnie > Laca

It's team dependant really, if you don't have an Arsenal striker it's the perfect time to downgrade elsewhere and get in one!
If you have your big hitting striker(s) in place then I'd go Wilson (def shades it if no Fraser) or Jimenez as a straight swap. Those two look solid, Mitro for a punt that could go well and Perez (who will likely take Arnie's place in his absence) as a more out there punt!

I think we sometimes overestimate the potential negative impact of doubling up on teams, particularly teams outside of the top six... Wilson is as good of a striker-option for your squad (in my opinion) even if you have Fraser, you can either view it as "putting too many eggs in one basket" or "buying more tickets to the lottery", it really is mostly a frame of mind.

You are probably right. But I transferred Kolasinac in this gameweek and I don’t want to take a hit. I may be a bit cautious but probably Wilson is the best option and I konw now that I made a mistake ditching him.

Take it from a person who sold Wilson right before he started going ballistic for Laca, just as he himself started to drift off 😉
I get the no hit part though but sometimes you just have to force yourself into being more aggressive as there always seems to be new fires to put out every week.

Best of luck to you regardless! 🙂

Great article and the replies are for once (mostly) on topic which is refreshing.

I immediately went Arni > Auba & Mane > Fraser (again) mainly due to a tight budget and potential movement in prices. I already have Murray and Jimenez who are two of the options listed as Arni replacements.

Murray will be shifted soon. He's served the team well so far, but is prone to only scoring at home and Brighton's next home fixtures are depressing so it's between Rondon (good forthcoming fixtures and nailed on), King (crap fixtures and already got Fraser and not enough money for Wilson) or Mitrovic (probably the best option and the YC issue is only a one game ban which isn't an issue for a budget player).

Out of the bunch I'd pick Jimenez as the best Arni replacement and Mitrovic as second best.

      Thanks, glad to hear it!

I think the transfers you did seem really good, Auba looks a great option in the coming weeks (I got him in for United which didn't really pan out, but long-term and all that).

Murray probably has to go unfortunately, not sure his body can deal with this tight schedule and as you say, those fixtures don't look great. Good option again probably later in the season though!
