Suspensions

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that a handful of Fantasy assets are perilously close to a ban.

If Premier League players accrue ten yellow cards in the top flight by the time their team has contested 32 league matches, they will then be slapped with a two-match suspension.

The ban has to be served in the same competition, too, so any suspension will only affect Premier League matches.

The key in the second paragraph above is “32 league matches”, which in most cases will be Gameweek 32.

However, there are some exceptions.

Brighton and Hove Albion have only played 29 Premier League games so far this season and won’t play their 32nd league fixture until Gameweek 34 – but none of the Seagulls’ players have accrued more than five cautions in 2018/19 and so are safe from any possible suspension incurred by collecting ten yellow cards.

Arsenal will play their 32nd Premier League game in Gameweek 33 (see below), as will Southampton – although the Saints’ players, like Brighton’s, can rest easy regarding the threat of a two-match ban.

Nearing a Suspension

PlayerCostTeamBookingsMatches played by team
Sokratis Papastathopoulos£5.1mArsenal930
Phil Bardsley£4.2mBurnley931
Luke Shaw£5.1mManchester United930
Etienne Capoue£4.8mWatford930
Granit Xhaka£5.2mArsenal830
Harry Arter£4.9mCardiff City830
Luka Milivojevic£6.3mCrystal Palace830
Diogo Jota£6.1mWolverhampton Wanderers
830

Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) just has to negotiate Burnley’s sole Gameweek 32 fixture against Bournemouth to avoid a two-match ban, while Sokratis (£5.1m) has to dodge a yellow card against Newcastle and Everton in Gameweeks 32 and 33 to do the same.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Etienne Capoue (£4.8m) both have a Double Gameweek 32 with Manchester United and Watford, so there exists the possibility of these players being booked in their opening Gameweek 32 fixture at Old Trafford and then being suspended for their respective clubs’ second game in midweek.

Even if Shaw and Capoue avoid picking up bookings in Manchester next Saturday, they would have to do likewise on the following Tuesday before the threat of a two-game ban is permanently lifted.

Diogo Jota (£6.1m), Luka Milivojevic (£6.3m) and Harry Arter (£4.9m) would have to be booked in both of their Double Gameweek 32 fixtures in order to be handed a two-match suspension, while Granit Xhaka (£5.2m) only needs to avoid a caution in one of Gameweek 32 or 33 to avoid that fate.

Ben Mee (£4.6m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) and Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m) are all sitting on eight yellow cards, too, but their respective clubs have already played 31 Premier League matches so they are no longer at risk.

Snodgrass is, at the time of writing, contesting an FA charge for allegedly abusing an anti-doping official.

Currently Banned

There are currently four FPL assets serving a ban in the Premier League, two of which were as the result of collecting ten yellow cards.

Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) will miss the first of Wolves’ Double Gameweek 32 fixtures before returning for the second match against Manchester United, while Fabian Schar (£4.7m) will be back for Newcastle in Blank Gameweek 33.

Harry Maguire (£5.4m) will also return in Gameweek 33 for Leicester as he serves a one-match ban for a professional foul, while Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) won’t be available until Gameweek 34 for Arsenal after his dismissal for violent conduct in the north London derby.

The Next Threshold: 15 Bookings

Once the threshold of 32 league matches is lifted, the next “target” for Premier League players to avoid is 15 yellow cards.

An FPL asset who collects 15 cautions will be handed a three-match ban.

There are a handful of players who are already into double figures for the season:

Is Azpi worth the extra 0.4 over DLuiz?

I think Azpi is a tiny bit more nailed on, due to Christensen being an option at CB but whether Sarri will use him who knows.

Anyone else reckon Spurs could keep things tight against Liverpool? Tempted by this:

Lloris - Azpi, Luiz, Smalling, Schlupp - Sterling, Dilva, Pogba, Haz - Kun & Rash

Yeah, I guess it's just because it's a big game and Liverpool have looked nervous recently - even made Fulham look decent last game and were fortunate to win imo.

Ya they looked very nervous in their recent win away to munich and their recent 3-0 win at home to bounrmouth I also felt they were very nervous when they beat Watford 5-0. I can't actually remember the last time we lost or didn't score in a league game at anfield.

I'm talking mainly about PL related nerves to be fair. Not as much pressure on them in CL.

Comparing Bournemouth and Watford to Spurs? 0-0 draws in the last two 'big' league games against Everton and Man Utd.

They were both Away games and both huge derbies. I could be wrong but they lost at old Trafford and drew at goodison last year ?People are treating these draws as aboulste travsties and the over the top anlasyis of 2 draws is beyond ridilcious. If they won all these games they would end up with over 100 points and break every record and that's not realastic .Anyways backing spurs for a clean sheet Is the wrong call.

They could. But they could also concede vs CP. If I had to guess I'd guess that CP and Watford have a better chance of CSs, and it'll save you 1.0m (+?) to use elsewhere

    B) Rashford Zaha/Bats 4.2 DDG (+ change for elsewhere) - 343
    C) Lukaku 4.3 Milivojevic DDG - 352

I’m personally going sterling just think he’s more explosive he will be very confident after that hat trick and think if he plays in both he outscores aguero. Also sterling has lower ownership and so hopefully if he does outscore Aguero I’ll get a massive green arrow

        Sterling's points per match: 7.3
        Aguero: 6.3

Returns against teams outside top 6:
Aguero: 10 goals, 9 assists. 17 starts. Subbed on 2x (one was on return from injury). Did not play 3, all due to injury
Sterling: 12 goals, 8 assists. 18 starts. Subbed on 3x. Did not play 3. No injuries I remember

Any educated opinions on PVA's decreased attacking output this season?

Seems a bit out of character when you consider he had 16 goals in his last 93 appearances prior to this season...

Followed by 1 goal in 30 appearances this year - dropping from a goal every 5.8 games on average to a goal every 30 games is quite significant...

    Due?

    Or steer clear?

How many highly owned 33-players need to Get injured before people on FH regret activating it early?

    1. Hotdogs for Tea

It can be activated any time, what difference does activating it early make ?

Could wildcard in GW32 and FH in 33 if too many GW33 injuries.

          7 years, 4 months ago

Although I think a GW32 wildcard is the wrong move if one still plans to BB in 35 - it's just asking for a lot of hits and would compromise team beforehand.

Basically the same players as most will get in 34 though ?

              • 10 Years
              7 years, 4 months ago

Yes, but those players have worse GW32 fixtures - if I were wildcarding now I'd get two or three Brighton players in preparation for GW34 and GW35 for example, but I wouldn't want them really for GW32.

Also if I'm wildcarding I want to know which teams have progressed (or are likely to progress) in the FA Cup and Champions League, which we mostly will know by GW34. (unless some CL ties are in the balance)

Yip agreed, but those Brighton players would be on my bench in 32

My core 9 or 10 players would be pretty much the same though

A WC32 team would be slowly rising in price though, whereas my 31 team is slowly falling in price and may make it difficult price wise by the the time GW34 comes around

That's a good point about price rises. It's swings and roundabouts though - if I were to get 2-3 Brighton players and bench them for GW32, that would compromise my GW32 team in other ways: it might price me out of 1-2 players that I'd be able to afford if going with cheap bench fodder. Personally I think that, plus the extra information we'll have in GW34, will result in more points. (especially since wildcarding so early before a bench boost always seems to cause lots of hits, though this is anecdotal personal evidence!)

It all goes back to the OP and injuries to our 31 teams 😉

You'd have the option of benchboosting 34 and tcing 35.

I don't see the appeal in that, partly for the reason above - i.e. that I wouldn't really want some of the BB34 players in my GW32 team. (Cardiff and Brighton in GW32? Could work out if one is lucky but it's not very likely)

A couple of Brighton on the bench ?

                Still 2 free transfers in 34 & 35 to tweak things 🙂

Play one brightonplayer and stick the res on the bench? I dont see any problem with that. YES 32-team would be slightly worse than those on a FH, but all the other benefits might be worth it.

Ah I see, has there been any typical GW31 player injuries yet ?

I don't think so, all in theory of course.

Touch wood by GW33 team looks better than most because I kept my two Arsenal players through the first blank.

Arsenal players are one of the reasons I have not activated my FH yet, I could really strengthen my 33 team with a FH if I use the WC in 32 🙂

Not many important ones. Wan, Digne and TAA are flagged. But haz/mane/Salah injured would make things interesting.

Cant be cancelled once activated. Imagine loosing 3-4 players on your 33team. Would probably lead to wc32 being more sensible than the FH.

How about that on FH: Boruc
    Luiz, Lindelof, Saiss, Tomkins
    Sterling(C), Pogba, Hazard, Milivojevic
Kane, Kun? Defence is crap i know 🙂

I’ve always wondered - if a player gets two yellows and gets sent off, do those yellow cards count to his tally for the 5/10/15 as per this article? Or are they “wiped clean” by the red card instead?

    1. Great question - not sure! I would imagine it would count as either 0 or 1 towards the accumulation rather than 2.

They don't figure in the totting up - the player has already served a suspension

Keep flicking between these 2 options
    Rash and dilva or
    Kaku and delfo
Talk myself out of each one , obviously will wait until closer for injury news but if both fit who would you go for?

Thoughts on Shaw? Currently on Smalling as my DGW32 FH Utd defensive asset.

I'm on Smalling but to be honest I can't see a cleansheet in either game and attacking returns are a lottery.

Which option is better on FH:

    A. Schlupp and Duffy
    B. Lindelof and Camarasa

    Thanks!

Both, because they are both the least injured and most rested in their respective positions in the CIty first team

After some advice for upcoming gameweek.

    PATRICIO
    SHAW,WAN BISSAKA,Robertson
    POGBA,STERLING,Fraser,F.Anderson
    AGUERO,JIMENEZ,Firminio

here is my current starting line up (doublers in Caps), I have one free transfer to use and all chips available.
I take it use triple captain chip and maybe a 4 point (to give me 9 doublers) is the best thing to do ?
    Any comments appreciated
