Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

Where does Koscielny want to go?

Why doesn't Emery sign Gary Cahill on a pay-for-play contract?

Why would Arsenal need Cahill? So slow for our game play plus he is past his best. Doesn't make sense to me.

United have loads of defenders, not great up top. Arsenal the opposite. Solskjaer and Emery should shove a few lads into a few van's and swap van's.

I'd like to bet Arsenal won't get in the top four again this season. Same old Arsenal in my opinion. Pass, pass pass, bore, bore, bore, and always flatter to deceive. Will always struggle against the big boys. Wish I could find a bookie that would give me a price on match betting between Arsenal and Tottenham on who out the two will end up higher in the league.

    Two questions:
    1) Who's better to start a season with: Auba for first two GW or Kane straightforward form GW1 regardless of City in GW2 ?
2| Start with Pulisic as a punt or go with Fraser for first two GW ?

I don’t see the issue with this sort of train of thought if you feel that you have enough captain options otherwise, for a good team two players over 10M is enough. To represent value you need to captain

Got rid of Sterling? Don't know if that's the best idea tbh.
      Wilson seems overpriced to me.

Yeah with KDB I feel like the team is more balanced and also if he stays fit I think he's a steal a that price

        1. AndyCook
          7 years, 1 month ago

I would prefer Sterling to Kane personally. I also think there’s misfiled value at 7.5M, I’d rather have two of Martial/Siggurdson/Pulisic/Pepe when he is priced than KDB and Trossard

      Very nice indeed

My plan B which might of course be my plan A is almost identical. The one minor difference is swapping out Mo for Auba! That gets me Fraser over Trossard

I’ve looked at Trossard but I’m put off by Potters reputation as a tinkerer. I had thought Gross was a certain starter but according to itk here that’s not a given either.

If Cancelo actually ends up coming to City and starts consistently he’s going to be in the 200s for pointe this season. Dude is probably the best attacking right back in the world, it’s pretty close between him and TAA. And he’ll probably be cheaper than TAA too. Walker might be making the move to CB.

    1. tuvok
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

TAA’s set pieces still put him ahead though probably in FPL terms.

        • 10 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Probably. But if Cancelo comes in at 6.0 or even 6.5 he might beat TAA in points per million.

If he starts consistently he’ll easily go for 10+ assists. Has an eye for goal too.

Does not do justice to his attacking play. I watched a lot of Juve. He had some fantasy assists, beautiful crosses with bad finishing at the end, and some great shots on target too (some of which led to fantasy assists).

            He’ll be FPL gold

Initially I thought there’d be a possibility of him being an alternative to Laporte if priced kindly - but upon closer examination of his Serie A record I’d have reservations

He was benched for 7 games, injured for 5, suspended for 1 and managed 2 assists & 1 goal in his 23 starts... within that he also played 5 games at LB, LW & RW in addition to his RB duties

It doesn’t really scream FPL asset to me - as attractive as a 6.0 or 6.5 “nailed” City RB May seem on paper - but will certainly be interesting to observe

There’s definitely a high risk there but when I see a starting right back in Pep’s system which utilizes fullbacks running in behind so much more, I can see Cancelo really flourishing. I’ve lost count of how many times Walker’s placed an aimless cross in a great position.

Also I think Cancelo’s stats don’t match up to his performances and I do expect them to increase sharply this season in a more attacking team. Disciplinary record is a fair criticism though dude needs to chill with the yellow cards haha

Anyone interested in Ozil now? I know he's very inconsistent and can be dreadful at times but playing behind a front three of Pepe, Laca, and Auba at 7.5m could be gold. Not to mention on his day, he's world class, and Arsenal have got Newcastle and Burnley to start with...

What has he to offer FPL-wise? Not a goalscorer, an occasional assist? I see interest here so genuine question, would people not be better to with 4.5m fodder and upgrade elsewhere?

A very good footballer but Ramsey attacking prowess comparisons are too early. Good luck with him anyways, Arsenal attack looks exciting this season.

Need help with these four options (both have to start):

    A) Azpi + Norwood
    B) Laporte + 4.5 mid
    C) Walker-Peters + Barkley
    D) Maitland-Niles + Townsend

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

      So 11m for starting def & mid. C, 5m + 6m is best.

    Ryan (Button)

Coleman - Alonso - Zinchenko - Robertson (Lundstram)

    Sterling - Mane - Fraser - Sigurdsson - Perez

    Rashford (Greenwood Wickham)
