Which budget FPL options caught the eye in Gameweek 1?

From John Lundstram (£4.0m) to Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) and everyone in between, there was almost as much pre-season discussion about budget Fantasy options as there was regarding premium assets.

Those heavy hitters excelled in Gameweek 1, with five of the six £10.0m+ Fantasy options all delivering returns for their owners.

Seven of the eight £8.0m+ Fantasy Premier League forwards who played this weekend banked at least one goal or assist, while the five £8.5m+ midfielders who started in Gameweek 1 all delivered too.

As Fantasy managers try to shoehorn as many expensive options into their squads, then, we need cut-price FPL assets more than ever.

With that in mind, we will assess the players in the bottom two price rungs of each position to see how they fared in the weekend just gone.

Is it viable to start dendonk most weeks?

He seems under priced by 1m and may be an alternative to McGinn

For example, in my 352, one option I have next week would be Fraser and Wilson to dendonk and kane - and starting dendonk on a pretty regular basis.

    Thanks

Yes, I'm happy to do so. He's basically an underpriced 5.5 attacking midfielder in the hole behind 2 excellent strikers.

I don’t see him coming close to McGinn in terms of attacking returns but you could get lucky. I don’t think he should be a starter.

You are probably realistically looking at an 80% blank rate for Donkey, so if you can live with that then go for it.

I reckon he'll do better than that. There's really nothing between him and Neves and Moutinho, both 1m more.

Returning attacking points in more than 8 games this season? Not sure myself. Possible I suppose.

He got 2 goals in half a season, so 4 this season is realistic. In terms of assists, he's feeding Jimenez and Jota, so I do see returns there.

He got no assists in that half a season though, so this seems a bit cherry-pickingish 😉 We'll see what happens I guess. Will be in absolutely everyone's team if he does start returning regularly.

FPL had him as a defender - he started there, moved up the defensive midfield, then midfield and finally attacking midfield. If the boss has settled on sticking him in the hole for the season, I think his returns will reflect that.

Could well be the key to a third premium in the team if Donck shows enough to be a 4th mid.

      I’d say so.

It’s wait and see on McGinn and AV generally. It was a mixed bag for me with attacking threat petering out as the game went on.

Wolves will struggle with the heavy fixture schedule and not be as good as they were last season, so i sense a few less goals and less clean sheets generally.

On that basis I can’t see Dendoncker being worth a place in my starting 11.

Great bench fodder in a 523 for me and if he rises in price I will probably cash in on him.

In a 5-2-3 he's a benchie for sure. I start him in a 4-4-2 to enable a midfield with SS+Kev and 2 decent strikers. Decisions need to be based on the whole picture, i.e. your squad and strategy.

that is why I have gone 523, it means my starting 11 is set and I can cover injury with one of 3 mids at 4.5.

I became fed up having to play 1 or 2 dodgy 4.5 mids or defenders in the past, so now my money is spread and my cheapest starters are Lloris, Coleman & AWB

So does anybody understand price changes? e.g.
    Rashford 931k owners GW1. Net transfers +189k. 189/931 = 20% and rose
    Origi 165k owners GW1. Net ransfers +127k. 127/165 = 77% and didn't

Only price falls work on % . Price rises are based on NTI passing a threshold - pure volume.

It’s fairer for the owners of a 100k owned player to need 10k transfers out to drop 0.1m, as it is for a 10k owned player to suffer 1k transfers out.

Price rises is an equal playing field no matter the current ownership.

Price rises don't take ownership into account. At a point in time daily, if their net transfers in reach a certain threshold it triggers the price rise. Currently the threshold is estimated somewhere between 100k and 140k - and this changes based on active players. I'd guess Rashford hit this threshold whereas Origi hasn't yet.

Yep. Extra complication is not all transfers count. New teams and Wildcarders bringing people in don't count towards a price rise (or so the clever people who run the price websites say). So if 27k of Origi's 127k are new teams/WCs then he's only reached 100k of NTI. So you can never really look at absolute transfers in/out to get an accurate reading of the rise threshold. So there will be surprises.

If you're bored or obsessive (I was both) then take a read of this:

              http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=128052

The FISO guys were the ones that originally (and painstakingly) worked out the formula to a certain extent in the noughties. Since then it's gone through a number of changes so don't take everything you read on here as gospel, as there's a good chance it may not be relevant any more. But it gives you the gist. Sites like Fantasy Football Fix and FPLStatistics have taken these findings to a new level, but it all started with the FISO guys.

i find it strange in the past that someone like Salah can get 500k (or some other huge number) incoming transfers and not rise yet another player gets 10k and does rise.

The incoming transfers that trigger rises are never equal from player to player, and higher owned players do seem to need more transfers to rise than lower owned players, generally ?

maybe it’s also to do with original price too, or more likely a mixture of everything

i have tracked it in the past but now as a casual i cba

Are you sure? Hasn’t it been when a flag has been removed or the player has risen once already?

I’m sure FPL do have some manual intervention though.

i am not sure anymore, but there does seem to be correlations with higher thresholds for higher owner players - but I am more convinced that FPL use judgement quite a lot.

who knows what the criteria is, maybe some players that were lowly priced in the first place have an easier route to a price rise if FPL towers think they got it wrong ? ... we just don’t know and it is good that we have such uncertainty imho

Should I do Wood fo Pukki or wait and see more from both?

I think Pukki has a potential to do well this season but I actually think Newcastle is quite a good team defensively (can’t say the same about their attack), playing with 5 at the back when defending and midfielders are quite defensive minded as well. Also worried about Drmic limiting Pukki’s game time.

On the other hand Wood seemed terrible in terms of fpl prospects vs Southampton and Arsenal wasn’t as bad as expected defensively despite playing against Newcastle so it’s a difficult decision for me.

Because ai thought Wood could do well against Southampton but he was terrible (from fpl perspective). And as I said I have reservations about Pukki’s next fixture as well, the factor behind the change in my plan is Wood, not Pukki.

As I said I haven’t changed my mind on Pukki, but changed my mind on Wood, his stats and more importantly his heatmap wasn’t promising at all, signicantly worse than last year average and there is no indication that he’ll improve in the short term with more difficult fixtures to come.

And yes, it is a long season for everyone, 35 FTs + 2 wildcards.

The Neymar and Mbappe examples were extreme examples to make a point.

The point is that just because you won your last match doesn't mean that you exclude a star player from coming in to your team.

Potter is also on record as saying that he wanted his debut to be a home game.

He’d have to haul for me to want to keep him.

I underestimated the Potter wheel effect. I’m not too interested in players who may be in and out. I don’t see how that will be clarified in a week. The range of options there and Potter proactive approach mean 90 minutes appearances are very chancy.

Buendia is where I’m looking. Made a mistake I believe and moving on.

Price rises changing at random time of day and not being able to see whether other players TV and transfers has changed will definitely mix things. I like it! Happy I kept 1m ITB.

Possible - could be a social media thing with people getting alerts over breakfast rather than in the middle of the night. I suspect though it was a glitch in line with the glitchy nature of the FPL website/App since the season started.

  18. 'Broadsword Calling Da…

The main problem with taking away the ability to see rivals transfers is that (in my opinion), it allowed lots of spoofing. You knew your opponents are looking, so you could employ small tactics to get into their heads, and I could reel of other stuff, but overall, having the sight, really added to the game. I'm marking this down as a loss and negative change to the game.

    1. sirgilroy
      6 days, 21 hours ago

How did you see who they had out in before?

      1. 'Broadsword Calling Da…
        • 3 Years

You couldn't see who they had per-se, but you could work out from the transfer values and subsequent prices rises and falls who they had (mostly). But again, you knew your rival was doing the same, so you could sometimes spoof what you were doing...as i say many tactics to deploy, but this is all gone now. Shame

Brighton are the kind of team to leave a £20m striker on the bench for long

Early season WC couldn't be avoided. Managed to catch Martial price rise.

    Would appreciate some needed advice on the below;

    Adrian (Norris)
    Mina, Wan-Bissaka, VVD, Zinchenko (Rico)
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial (Dedoncker)
    Pukki, Wesley (Greenwood)

1.5m ITB - Earmarked to bring in Robertson or TAA after Adrian has run his course.

    Thanks

I was rather silly and went for a one week punt on only Tottenham, Liverpool, Bournemouth & Watford player due to their plum home fixtures. Relatively new to FPL and in the last two years wasted the first wildcard. So thought it would be a good idea to use it first week as FH almost....

Didn't expect Man City to decimate West Ham.

        Lloris
        Robertson, VVD, Ake
        Lucas Moura, Salah, Pererya, Fraser
        Kane, Wilson, Deulofeu
