Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Moura was a temp for GW1
Wood has not good fixtures and Barnes good GW makes Wood more prone to rotating with JRod
        Perez played deeper than expected
        King/Bournemouth were meh

I hope not. Your strategy should be based on doing your own thing instead of second-guessing your opponents.

If you're trying to guess and block them then they're better than you and you're just their b*tch.

You know if you make an early transfer you only avoid the problem of being priced out by contributing to the wider problem, right?

Price changes ahead of deadlines don't happen on their own, they happen because people make transfers earlier than they have to, whatever the motivation, whether they are considered experienced players or one of "the masses", every early transfer contributes to early price rises.

Adrian out now... was planning to get rid of Ings and Adams but they may be worth another chance against a dodgy Liverpool defence.

Still got VVD and Robertson which is concerning!

    Rest of team:

    Heaton (Pope)

    Robertson, VVD, Maguire, Laporte, Digne

Salah (V), KDB, Sterling (C), (Dendoncker, Hayden)

    Adams, Ings, (Greenwood)

1 free transfer. What should I do?

People don't be afraid to make a transfer out of the fear of being called a knee-jerker. Doctors look for the knee-jerk reflex during clinical examinations, it's not always a bad thing, maybe you hop onto a in-form player ahead of the curve, play the game YOU want to.

Agreed... but there are a lot of people ditching their long-term plans from one week ago, based on chasing points scored last week by players they didn't own.

A lot of their fans seem certain Freeman will replace him, and that Lundstram is likely to play away games. I'm not sure it's that simple and think he will start, for what its worth.

I think they're suggesting Lundstram offers them a bit more defensively, which makes sense, but Palace scored more goals away from home than Bournemouth did at home last season, so like I said, I'm not sure it's that straightforward.

Hold. He will likely play. If not, he will be back still next week. What's the point of a -4 for a stop gap keeper who won't play ever again.

Before GW1, if he had over 20points on the board going into GW5, you probably would have taken that? Id say anything in the next 3 games would be a bonus

Ah right, fair enough. I have him so that was my thinking on him this week! If I didn't have him, I'd def wait until GW5 before thinking about getting him

Of course. I just looked at the fixtures for the first time this season and Barnes popped out.
Were going with the 5 minute approach this season until now

    Heaton
    Robbo Digne AWB
    Perez Siggy Sterling Salah Martial
    Wilson Ings
    Lund - Rico - Wickam

Next week transfer plan for -4:
    Robbo->laporte
    Salah-> KDB
    Wilson-> Kane
    0.5ITB

    Is it good idea?

For kane, why not? This is for GW 3. Salah + wilson vs kane + kdb.
The -4 is for robbo to laporte, i can hold this transfer anyway.

Captain Salah or Wilson? Ruling out Sterling as can't captain a player against my own team 😀

Salah- worried about his mins, but good record against southampton. Is he going to be on top form after 120mins?
Wilson- good record against promoted sides. Nice differential and is completely nailed. But are Bournemouth good enough?
