With no goals, assists, clean sheets or bonus points to his name after three Gameweeks of the 2019/20 campaign, Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) is hardly staking a convincing claim to be in Fantasy managers’ squads going forward.

The Chelsea left-back has shown some encouraging signs in an attacking sense, however, while the Blues’ forthcoming fixture run is among the more appealing in the division.

Between now and the November international break, Frank Lampard’s side face just one of the ‘big six’: a Gameweek 6 clash with Liverpool the only cloud on the horizon.

The Blues thus sit top of our Season Ticker for ‘defence’ between Gameweeks 4 and 12, which will provide faint hope of a long-awaited first clean sheet of 2019/20 – even if Chelsea’s defence is currently doing anything but.

Only Norwich City have conceded more goals than Lampard’s troops (seven) so far, while the west London club are among seven teams yet to register a shut-out.

Clean sheets are also thin on the ground across the Premier League, though, with just three in Gameweek 3 and two in Gameweek 2.

Indeed, Everton are the only club to have kept more than one league shut-out this season.

With that in mind, perhaps we should be placing even more emphasis than we usually do on defenders who can compensate for a loss of clean sheet with a semi-regular attacking return.

Emerson’s attacking credentials will, therefore, be the primary focus of this Members’ piece.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 3

How do you rate my WC team:

    Pope 4.0
    TAA Emerson Digne Zinchenko
Salah Sterling De Bruyne Mount xxxx
    Haller Pukki xxxx

9.1 ITB for 2 fodders (could be cantwel and 4.4 Fwd or safe some cash with Dendo Greenwood)

    Any improvements?

I haven't seen anything from defence to advocate playing four at the back when you have cheap strikers and mids that are getting very good returns.

It is the current be situation yes. Stats show different though - i can see Emerson and TAA getting not only CS but attacking returns as well. Also MCIhas the highest odds of keeping a CS and Zin looked good in attack as well. I think it is much easier for premium defender to keep a CS (lets say once per 2 games, based on the nive fixtures for next several games, than to rely on a mid or cheap fwd to score every game. And all attacking return are kind of bonus). Maybe i am too pink glassed but i see double digit howl for Emerson soon and a 15pointer for TAA as well.

I am personally keeping Jota rather than taking a hit to get Haller/Abraham.

Ultimately he's very capable of getting returns against an Everton team that don't look great and I believe have lost their defensive mid.

Plus I'd still like another eye test on his potential replacements and there's always the remote possibility of injury/suspension.

True but I just feel it’s good week to get haller up against one of the worst defences and wolves are still to hit the ground running in the league yet for me and I think europa is playing a big part in that

It takes more net transfers out for a price fall while red flagged, but his price will then be locked when the red flag is removed to make it easier to buy him back.

I have the same bench. Has to be Rico right? Debating to go with a 5-3-2. Taking a hit for Martial doesnt seem right.

Rico on some corners and FKs too when he played in GW1. Sound logic?

Lanzini a great differential, but he's had 4 seasons in PL and never delivered anything.

Maybe it helps with Anderson and Haller to help out, but he's had some decent forwards to convert earlier too (Arnie, Pea etc.)

Mount is in a side that got outperformed by Man U, which says a lot...

      Yeah, toin coss i guess

IS playing Rico an option around here? Took a hit to get KDB in and thinking of benching Martial as I want him long term into Utd's attack.

Those not on Pope, have Ryan (City away) so no worries if Burnley concede imo

I would never bet on any side that faces Liverpool or City to get a clean sheet, they are too attacking and have so much quality

Earlier seasons before Liverpool figured out how to play against deep defending teams I would say yes, but now they've found many ways to solve it.
