Newcastle United 1 Watford 1

Goals: Fabian Schär (£5.0m) | Will Hughes (£5.5m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)

Bonus: Hughes x3, Hayden x2, Ben Foster (£4.9m) x2

Watford earned their first point of the season with a draw at Newcastle light on both consistent attacking quality and significant Fantasy impact.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes and the Hornets held out until close to half-time before Fabian Schär (£5.0m) swept home Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) knockdown.

Replays showed that the ball came off Hayden’s arm and the goal should have been chalked off, but the decision stood as VAR continued its mystifyingly inconsistent start to the season.

And, in truth, a draw was all that Watford deserved from a game in which coach Javi Gracia opted for pragmatism over progressiveness in a bid to halt his side’s three-match losing streak in the league.

Gracia left Deulofeu on the bench for the trip to Newcastle

Gracia made his intentions clear in his starting line-up, consigning striker Gerard Deulofeu (£6.3m) to the bench and fielding three centre-halves and a lone striker in a team set up to drop deep, absorb pressure and play on the counterattack.

The Spaniard, found in 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads, is Watford’s most popular asset, but he has lost close to half of his Gameweek 1 ownership and an eight-minute cameo at St James’ Park will do little to halt that decline.

At least Hughes (0.3%) has offered attacking returns, figuring in both goals the Hornets have so far managed this season.

The midfielder followed up his assist in last week’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United by finding the net when Tom Cleverley‘s (£4.9m) shot was deflected into his path.

Watford have struggled to offer much attacking threat so far this season

Hughes’ effort was one of only three shots on target for the visitors, while Andre Gray (£5.9m) and Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) both missed good chances on the break before Newcastle equalised and then took control of the game in the second half.

Not that the Magpies were overly impressive going forward themselves.

Both sides had 13 attempts, eight of which were in the area respectively, and created a chance every 7.4 minutes.

The home team did manage two more shots on target than Watford, forcing Ben Foster (£4.9m) into some smart work to deny both Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) and Hayden in a performance that earned the goalkeeper two bonus points.

But Newcastle’s lack of an end product – three goals from four matches – means their attacking assets remain attractive to only the most tribal, or wilfully optimistic, of Fantasy managers.

Almirón’s efforts called Ben Foster into action in Gameweek 4

Manager Steve Bruce’s plans were hampered by injuries to wide men Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), meaning first starts for Christian Atsu (£5.4m) and Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

That did little to improve the supply line to striker Joelinton (£5.9m), who was the match-winner in Gameweek 3’s surprise victory over Spurs.

The Brazilian could not muster a single shot on target against Watford, his two attempts matched by defenders Schär and Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

At least Hayden produced a first return of the season for his 5.7% ownership – the joint-highest figure among Newcastle players alongside centre-half Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) – although that popularity is most likely down to his bargain bucket pricing in FPL.

Fabian Schär showed his aerial threat once again, scoring Newcastle’s only goal against Watford

And Schär’s goal again demonstrated his attacking potential, having scored four times, and provided one assist, last season.

The Swiss international, however, was substituted after 84 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to Bruce.

“He was feeling not great at half-time and had dizziness in spells, which was a bit of a concern, and in the end he wasn’t great when I spoke to him in a water break when one of the players was injured. There was a sort of vacancy about him, so I hope he’s okay. We’ll see how he is. He was not feeling well, he was just complaining to the doctor about being dizzy, and that was at half-time.” – Steve Bruce

Schär is still expected to join up with the Switzerland squad, but even without an international break to stall our Fantasy dealings, there is likely to be no rush to acquire assets from either side any time soon.

Watford will face Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two Gameweeks, with tricky trips to Wolves and Spurs just round the corner as well.

And the Magpies have to play Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester United before the second round of international fixtures rears its ugly head in early October.

For once, country before club could work in both managers’ favour, buying them some much-needed time to work on the deficiencies, both defensive and attacking, hampering their respective sides.

Gracia is certainly hoping the enforced break can be a force for good.

“Last season we started really well, this season the first four games we have only got one point. Now we have a break and it’s a good time to work and prepare better for the next game.” – Javi Gracia

Newcastle, with four points from their last two outings, are clearly in a better place than Watford.

But as things stand, neither set of players currently represent much Fantasy fruit worth picking.

Currently sitting at 1m OR which is a bit worrying - normally around top 100k at this point - is my team looking ok?

    Heaton
    Robbo VVD Coleman Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Mount Ceballos
    Auba Haller

    Cantwell / Soyuncu / Greenwood

3.0 itb and wildcard still available.

Thinking next week doing Greenwood -> Barnes for that lovely fixture run. Obviously i dont have Salah, but il be bringing him in for Auba around gwk13 i reckon

You're prob only 20-30 points off top 100k tho, so no need to be worried. Team looks good... who would you drop from the starting eleven if you bring in Barnes?

I'd guess it would be Lundstram
pretty nice, all starters on your bench then

Thankyou, well i dont actually have a FT as i did Perez -> Cantwell already (have wildcard so can use it if i get loads of injuries).

So barnes would be brought in for gwk6

If Pépé or other Arsenal front 3 hits form have you plan to get one in without Wildcard or losing Salah Sterling or Mané? I could get for -4 with VVD to 4.5 m Trossard to Pépé and Pukki to Ayew for this team.
Harder to get Auba in but easy to get Lacazette. As I said not doing it now but their fixtures look good.

    Pope
    TAA Mings Digne
Salah Sterling De Bruyne Pépé Cantwell
    Ayew Haller

    McGovern Diop Greenwood Rico

If you wait you'll have missed the train. wat AVL next two. I'm punting now. And I have WC to fix it if it doesn't work out.

I'm gonna try this Pepe train for two weeks and see how I feel.

I planned to find a way to get Pepe in after watching the Liverpool game. So just normal transfers to get him in as a punt. If it doesn't work out, I'll WC in GW 7 and restructure.

Yes I see you have money to get in one move. Nice! Minimum 3 moves for me so would need to WC or take hit. May leave until Villa home game and hope Pépé doesn’t find his shooting boots at Watford!

Ceballos is the only route I'd accept into Arsenal's attack while my funds are still happily resting on Salah/KDB/Sterling.

Emery's such a nightmare with his randomized team selections you'll get Pepe or Laca benched one week inexplicably then hauled off at 55 the next. Granted, Guardiola can do that as well on occasion but Sane injury makes me more confident of at least Sterling showing up most games.

Mendy to be a better option than TAA when fit. Better defence, better delivery, much better penetration and physicality in the final third. TAA is great but Mendy is a beast

Better delivery? TAA has 9 assist in last 10 pl . Even a fit mendy will take some doing to top that

Plus TAA on setpeices and imo liverpool defence is better

Liverpool defence is certainly not better than City. Mendy has a different type of assist in his locker.. that low penetrating whip at immense speed that just needs to be guided in. TAA has the better accuracy and yes he is on corners and set pieces, but in open play Mendy has the better assist potential

Mendy has never had more than 5 assists in any season.

His best return is 5 in a 10 game period. Trent has 9 in that time and is younger and fitter, and so less likely to need his time managed.

Could be close. But I doubt it.

My progress in FPL every year is hindered by my inability to pick the correct captain. I dropped from 50k to 90k last week. I chose Sterling as captain last week, over Aguero and Salah, and even in the other weeks I have picked a captain that has done well but not the best option in my team. How do some people do it week in, week out?

Perma captaining a Salah or a Sterling gets you the guts of 550 points in a season

Trying to cherry pick captains may get you more if you have a god-like ability to (consistently) predict single GW outcomes correctly

For most mere mortals however, in pretty sure perma capping would be the way to go

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

        Case in point:

        Salah perma: 72
        Sterling perma: 74

        Captain poll winners = 48:

        GW1 Salah 12
        GW2 Sterling 7
        GW3 Kane 2
        GW4 Sterling 3

Even with Salah's poor season it would have yielded over 13 points per week on average throughout last season - 6.5PPG+ is pretty fine for captaincy

That's honestly the biggest problem with it - it genuinely does take away some of the week to week 'fun '

But I'd wager good money that for a significant proportion of players (Baps Sniffer excluded obviously 🙂 ) it would yield comparable if not favorable results over a season

    4. PogChamp
      • 14 Years

Same. I'm useless with captains. This season I'm just perma Sterling. They should add a chip that you can have your highest scoring player for that GW as captain.

Hows this for a potential alternative wildcard?

    Pope
    Lowton / Digne / Mings
    Salah / Sterling / Son / Pepe / Mount
    Pukki / Haller

    Button / Lundstram / Greenwood / Rico

Prefer KDB and a sub 7 mill mid to Son and Pepe.
Gives you cash to upgrade that horror show of a defence.

with only 1 maybe 2 bench players you want your first 3 defenders to be rotation proof.

I'd want at least 1 Liverpool defender back there... then you can play them and digne every week then rotate the third defender between Lundestrum and someone else (maybe look to see who rotates well with Sheff Utd).

One goal was lucky. The other two were nicely taken. Shots per 90 are up significantly from last season and from better locations.

      I'm tempted.

    3. AndyCook
      6 years, 10 months ago

Martial being fit is bad for James as James needs to play on the left. Mount in behind is better than James on the right, James on the left is better than Mount out wide

With TAA rising and Laporte falling, would you make the move now or take the 0.2m loss and make it later?

    1. George Sillett

TAA could get injured over the IB.

    2. FOO FIGHTER
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Do not listen to bad advise. Many assets can get injured over the International break.

I would rather get TAA now than struggle to get him after the IB when his price is already volitile with arrows showing up, he is not cheap, he will get more expensive instead of sitting with an injured Laporte whose price will be scattered to ashes.

      1. FOO FIGHTER

What is the point in keeping a 6.5m defender which is injured? To sit on your bench bound to lose value While TAA rises?

TAA once again is not cheap. Fitting him in without any price rise yet is already a problem for many I would say.

Trossard to Mount. Greenwood looked good when he came in for United. 4.5 is better than 5.0 on your bench

Yeah but he only ever plays 5 mins here and there. At least Trossard plays. Hodgson has been singing Ayew's praises and he has scored the last 2

Going Aguero over Sterling as I don’t think there will be too much difference in their points over the season. I prefer my team structure with Aguero in it and having Salah and KDB as premium mids. Having 3 and no big strikers didnt sit well. I would have swapped out Sterling for Aguero even if he didn’t blank.

        1. MTPockets

Ok, so I have 1 FT, 1.1 million in the bank and my current squad is

    Pope, (Mc Govern - 4.0)
    VVD, Digne, Zinchenko, Lundestrum (dunk)
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial, (Cantwell)
    King, Pukki (greenwood)

Was thinking to move on Martial, but think I will wait and ride it out for now.

    SO,

King the obvious player to shift out - for who?
