Newcastle United 1 Watford 1

Goals: Fabian Schär (£5.0m) | Will Hughes (£5.5m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)

Bonus: Hughes x3, Hayden x2, Ben Foster (£4.9m) x2

Watford earned their first point of the season with a draw at Newcastle light on both consistent attacking quality and significant Fantasy impact.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes and the Hornets held out until close to half-time before Fabian Schär (£5.0m) swept home Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) knockdown.

Replays showed that the ball came off Hayden’s arm and the goal should have been chalked off, but the decision stood as VAR continued its mystifyingly inconsistent start to the season.

And, in truth, a draw was all that Watford deserved from a game in which coach Javi Gracia opted for pragmatism over progressiveness in a bid to halt his side’s three-match losing streak in the league.

Gracia left Deulofeu on the bench for the trip to Newcastle

Gracia made his intentions clear in his starting line-up, consigning striker Gerard Deulofeu (£6.3m) to the bench and fielding three centre-halves and a lone striker in a team set up to drop deep, absorb pressure and play on the counterattack.

The Spaniard, found in 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads, is Watford’s most popular asset, but he has lost close to half of his Gameweek 1 ownership and an eight-minute cameo at St James’ Park will do little to halt that decline.

At least Hughes (0.3%) has offered attacking returns, figuring in both goals the Hornets have so far managed this season.

The midfielder followed up his assist in last week’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United by finding the net when Tom Cleverley‘s (£4.9m) shot was deflected into his path.

Watford have struggled to offer much attacking threat so far this season

Hughes’ effort was one of only three shots on target for the visitors, while Andre Gray (£5.9m) and Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) both missed good chances on the break before Newcastle equalised and then took control of the game in the second half.

Not that the Magpies were overly impressive going forward themselves.

Both sides had 13 attempts, eight of which were in the area respectively, and created a chance every 7.4 minutes.

The home team did manage two more shots on target than Watford, forcing Ben Foster (£4.9m) into some smart work to deny both Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) and Hayden in a performance that earned the goalkeeper two bonus points.

But Newcastle’s lack of an end product – three goals from four matches – means their attacking assets remain attractive to only the most tribal, or wilfully optimistic, of Fantasy managers.

Almirón’s efforts called Ben Foster into action in Gameweek 4

Manager Steve Bruce’s plans were hampered by injuries to wide men Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), meaning first starts for Christian Atsu (£5.4m) and Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

That did little to improve the supply line to striker Joelinton (£5.9m), who was the match-winner in Gameweek 3’s surprise victory over Spurs.

The Brazilian could not muster a single shot on target against Watford, his two attempts matched by defenders Schär and Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

At least Hayden produced a first return of the season for his 5.7% ownership – the joint-highest figure among Newcastle players alongside centre-half Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) – although that popularity is most likely down to his bargain bucket pricing in FPL.

Fabian Schär showed his aerial threat once again, scoring Newcastle’s only goal against Watford

And Schär’s goal again demonstrated his attacking potential, having scored four times, and provided one assist, last season.

The Swiss international, however, was substituted after 84 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to Bruce.

“He was feeling not great at half-time and had dizziness in spells, which was a bit of a concern, and in the end he wasn’t great when I spoke to him in a water break when one of the players was injured. There was a sort of vacancy about him, so I hope he’s okay. We’ll see how he is. He was not feeling well, he was just complaining to the doctor about being dizzy, and that was at half-time.” – Steve Bruce

Schär is still expected to join up with the Switzerland squad, but even without an international break to stall our Fantasy dealings, there is likely to be no rush to acquire assets from either side any time soon.

Watford will face Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two Gameweeks, with tricky trips to Wolves and Spurs just round the corner as well.

And the Magpies have to play Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester United before the second round of international fixtures rears its ugly head in early October.

For once, country before club could work in both managers’ favour, buying them some much-needed time to work on the deficiencies, both defensive and attacking, hampering their respective sides.

Gracia is certainly hoping the enforced break can be a force for good.

“Last season we started really well, this season the first four games we have only got one point. Now we have a break and it’s a good time to work and prepare better for the next game.” – Javi Gracia

Newcastle, with four points from their last two outings, are clearly in a better place than Watford.

But as things stand, neither set of players currently represent much Fantasy fruit worth picking.

Any Burnley fans about? I’d love your thoughts on the best Clarets defender (for FPL).

(Non-Burnley fans comments are welcome too!)

Paing 0.4 extra for Tark is perhaps worth it but 5m for a Burnley def, hm. Went for Lowton myself knowing that everytime they concede hope is gone-).

yep, backline will get you trouble. But in reality, just move Martial down to Mount and get a decent one for Rico, and at least you will have 4 defenders to rotate. Aguero no needed if both Sterling and KDB, downgrade to Auba and you can get City def for Montoya also, or Matip.

Hard to know when the points will come, patience is hard to come by and at the start of the season players who have gone an initial streak look irresistible in that form but later on in the season when more data is available it becomes more obvious that there is value in defence

Not sure there’s any more risk of that than Sterling and KdB getting their rests for easy fixtures once CL starts.

No sign really that Kun isn’t as clear number one as he was all last season despite talk otherwise

It could work but it’s not to my liking. No Sterling or Salah but you have mane so i guess it’s ok. Very heavy in forwards, don’t know if they’d provide enough to cover points lost in midfield.

Ok, so I have 1 FT, 1.1 million in the bank and my current squad is

    Pope, (Mc Govern - 4.0)
    VVD, Digne, Zinchenko, Lundestrum (dunk)
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial, (Cantwell)
    King, Pukki (greenwood)

    SO,

    Done my WC, currently rocking:

    Pope (Button)
Digne / TAA / Ota / Lund (Montoya)
    Salah / Sterling / DeBruyne / Martial / Mount
    Pukki (Ayew) (Greenwood)

Don’t understand picking Lundstram, would rather have the extra money as he’s going to get barely any points anyway

I've had him since GW1 and he's OOP.
I've actually got him starting next week and Montoya rested... there's always the chance of a goal/assist and he'll get clean sheet points on the rare occasion they manage it.

          6 years, 10 months ago

I think he is likely to get 1-2 points most games, as you have a starting bench player already I would get rid of him even for 0.2 but if you have had him from the start then maybe not so important (although personally I’d have the 0.1)

        Cheapest starting defender?

I’m not convinced spending extra money for a starting defender is worth it when you have one straying bench player

What extra money ? Most got him at 4 or 4.1. He is playing oop and will score the most points of defenders around that price for sure

        1. AndyCook
          6 years, 10 months ago

For the number of points he will get I would have a non-starter even for a 0.1 or 0.2.. it’s a personal preference

        2. AndyCook

After all he already had Ayew and Montoya to rotate

How does this look for a WC team?

    Pope (4.0)
Digne - TAA - Zinchenko (Soyuncu, Lundstram)
Sterling - KdB - Salah - Mount (Cantwell)
    Haller - Abraham (Ayew)

    0.0itb

4 subs can rotate for the 11th starting spot.

Does anyone agree that Martial will be near enough essential this season?

Out of position playing for Man Utd and just £7.5m (approx after injury price drops), surely that is great value?

If he stays fit, yes. The problem is most people have no benches so have to jump at the first sign of trouble.

Expecting a drop in rose tomorrow.

    a) Sell rose
    b) Hold on to rose

Have 5.5 itb to replace rose
Currently has Otamendi, Digne and Pope

    1) Burnely defender ?
    2) Any viable replacements ?

    Hi Guys,

Anyone wiser than me (all of you) able to offer some transfer advice?
Doing a WC, Martial liable to drop... I already have him and would ideally keep.

Any worth in transferring out, using the money on a riser and buying Martial back once he's dropped?

Presumabley I'd need both players to rise/drop two points to make any progress??

Trying to work out if there's any value in doing anything with him.

sell him if hes going to drop. check fpl stats for who is going to rise

if you sell him for 7.5 and buy him back for 7.4 you ve made 0.1 profit.

He will need to drop twice at least for you to make any value assuming you got him for 7.5 in the first place.

    2. Dacra
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Depends on when you bought Martial?

I got him at 7.5, sold him at 7.7 (for 7.6) and can then buy him back if i want later for 7.6. Wont save me any money, but buying at 7.6 is better than buying at 7.5, as sale value will still be 7.6 if need to move him on later..

    3. Jekori
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

If you got him for 7.6 there's no harm in selling him and buying back later. But you're probably right that there won't be any double rising midfielders (except James/KdB/Mount/Cantwell but they already rose once)

    4. AndyCook
      6 years, 10 months ago

No value unless you bought him at 7.7

Sterling at risk of rotation v Norwich as CL game four days later, or at least, curtailed minutes? Seriously puts a doubt over his captain credentials

    2. AndyCook

Possibly but should be in ok shape after international break as presumably won’t play that many minutes and they could kill Norwich in 50-60 mins

Probably Barnes and Haller this week, but Pukki after City has Burnley, Palace, Villa and Bournemouth, so he should come back into your thinking then.

I think I'm going to take a risk and leave Pukki for now as Burnley are quite tight at home whilst Palace could have Tomkins & Sakho back by then so won't be a walk in the park either. Barnes my target for Jota this week although I reckon he could do well against Chelsea so may wait one more week and hope for a Montoya CS.

    Salah KDB Sterling Trossard Cantwell
    Barnes Pukki Haller

    Pickford
    TAA. Stones. Walker. Keane
    Sterling. Maddison. Mount.
    Kane. Tammy. Wilson
    Subs: button, Barkley, cantwell, kelly

Might get Teresa May to manage

Leaky Norwich with no centre backs that like to try and attack or Roys palace that like to defend and have all Centre back back in action fighting for places. Could play 8 at the back
