The Meet the Manager series, where Joe interviews a Fantasy manager with a more than enviable track record, is back for 2019/20.

This campaign’s series of interviews starts with a chat with Tarek Balbaa, who explains why being based in Egypt has helped ensure he puts the eye test to good use in his Fantasy decisions.

Over his illustrious career, Tarek has eight top 10,000 finishes, including two in the top 1,000.

With all Premier League matches broadcast in Egypt, he is able to watch four to five televised games a week.

This has ensured he was quick to acquire Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne this season and is still reticent to invest heavily in Manchester United.

Underlying statistics are still important to Tarek but he likes to go back to basics with such research, preferring shots in the box statistics than the phenomena of expected statistics.

Tarek also talks about his poor seasons and the lessons he’s learned from mistakes made. Chief of these for him has been to focus heavily on what mini-league rivals are up to.

The chat with Tarek is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

It is also available on Soundcloud and as a podcast. Embedded versions of these are also available below.

All 15 previous episodes can be viewed via our Youtube channel or heard via our Soundcloud channel.

    How's this?

    Pope - Button
    Digne - TAA - Lund - Pieters - Hanley
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - McGinn - Cantwell
    Pukki - Barnes - Haller

How would you get Firmino in? I don't want to lose KDB or Haller. I suppose I'd have to lose Salah or Sterling.

Mount to cellabos would do it. Otherwise I'd have to downgrade big hitter or digne or zinch or Barnes or pukki which don't think wanna?

Given the Trossard injury news, I've drawn up a quick shortlist for possible replacements within his price-range... Choices and thoughts would be welcomed... as would any good picks/punts that I've missed?

    6m and under...
    A) Cebbalos
    B) McGinn
    C) Iwobi

    6.1m and over...
    D) James
    E) Mount
    F) Lanzini

Notable omissions from the list include the Saints pair, Ward-prowse and Redmond, as they have two prime-looking fixtures coming up.

Personally I'm thinking a 2 week punt on Iwobi given his form and fixtures. Will give a chance to see how Mount gets on against decent opposition and how his minutes are managed when the champions league starts.

I'm considering wildcarding in week 7 so wouldn't waste an extra transfer and I'm not too fussed about his price going up, if he's all he's cracked up to be he'll be worth the extra.

      1. Old Boots
        • 13 Years

Yeah, it was those two fixtures that made me add him to the list. Scored in the Euro final too, so on a decent run in front of goal. Just minutes that worry me a wee bit.

@Manuforlife99, how’s this for said Salah Sterling KDB Pepe team. Stretched budget, but done it.

    Pope 4.0

    Pukki Wesley 4.5

I think that one main problem is the number of injuries (Haller did his share) and the fact that their squad depth for the problem position is limited. Should be better soon.

Next one is MCI and he is more likely to blank than score, but not worth taking -4 only because of that.

    TAA - Zinchenko - Pieters _ Lundstram
    Sterling - Mane - KDB - Mount
    Kane - Pukki

    Woodman - Cantwell - Wickham - Hanley

Pukki ➡ Barnes worth a hit? Or, Kane + Wickham ➡ Barnes + Wilson for a hit next gw? Can't really see Pukki doing much in the next 3 gws. Thoughts?

Are you sure that’s right? All three matches individually BTTS odds are under 3/1 on the exchanges - that’s a max of 27/1 in an accumulator 30/1 would be crazy odds

      80/1 sounds wrong

Yeah but the actual odds of it happening are closer to 130/1 - sky are laughing all the way to the bank here win lose or draw, they just lay off the liability and cream off 50/1 of margin

It’s like giving you 11/1 odds on picking one random number from 1 to 20 - they are subhuman scum - those type of odds should be illegal

Get yourself signed up to smarkets or matchbook or even betfair (higher commission on BF though)

Here are the exchange odds much closer to the “actual” values:

Is Barnes going to troll us? Wood will score one day also. Somebody said here that he has been lucky twice. Also his xGOT might suggest that he has overperformed. Fixtures look nice though.

        Anytime goalscorer odds:
        Barnes 3.15 (bri)
        Pukki 3.45 (MCI)

Perhaps there is Pukki hype, Laporte is injured and Brighton defends well, but these odds are surprisingly close imo.

Of the players who have fallen in price, who do you think is the best value to pick up on a WC?

    A) Fraser at 7.3m

    b) Siggy at 7.8m

    c) Wilson at 7.8m

    d) Eriksen at 8.8m

Kane scored a hattrick on international duty.
    Good home fixture coming up.
I think i should take multiple hits & bring him IN my team.

This is what i did last season & took -8 to get him.

If you noticed he was always up top for England, he hasn't been playing that position for spurs, he's been playing to deep for long periods of the game for spurs until that changes I'll give him a miss even though I had him for nearly most of the season last year.

          Uh?

Before he got injured in 22 last season he matched Sterling point for point. Was part of my single premium forward spot for 250 points play last season.

Kane got 14G 4 A from 21 starts in that period
Sterling got 9G 9A 7 CS from 18 starts in same period

Sterling higher PPA, but Kane benefitted from playing a few extra games

But from GW22 onwards it has been a very different story

            Kane 6G 0A from 9 starts
            Sterling 13G 3A 13 CS from 17 starts

I hope Kane gets his act together sharpish

    Thoughts on this WC draft?

    Pope -- McGovern
    Soyuncu -- TAA -- Dunk -- Lowton -- Lundstraam
    Mane -- Eriksen -- KDB -- Sterling -- Cantwell
    Haller -- C.Wilson -- Nketiah

Finding it hard to ditch Spurs and Bournemouth assets with those fixtures...

      Could do very well

But I’d be trying to upgrade Mane to Salah (penalties & selfishness will continue to keep Mo firmly ahead of Mane’s open play contributions, as it has done for a few seasons now)

And Wilson would be one source of funding - Barnes, Pukki, Jimmy all offer as much if not more than Callum

Also not a fan of Dunky Dunkster but maybe he’s a rotation with Soyuncu & Lawton?

A palace defender may be better with their fixtures

Plus that super upcoming fixture run

He’s not in my plans at all - but that’s a very impressive record & possibly we should be sitting up & taking note

I do think he’s very capable of going 3-4 games without any returns though, but who knows, maybe he’ll just keep scoring for fun

    Ryan
    VVD, TAA, Digne, Stones
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Lanzini, Mount
    Pukki

    (Greenwood, Lundstram, Wickham)

Thinking of saving my FT and then next week downgrading a Liverpool defender and upgrading Wickham

I've a few options. Could downgrade VVD to Lowton and get Barnes for Wickham. Or VVD to 4.0 fodder might mean I could stretch to Jimenez. TAA to fodder and I could get Wilson.

My current team below, a few players I want (TAA, KDB, Haller, Otamendi) but I still have my wildcard, thinking it may be better to keep it this for later on in the year and bring those players in slowly.

1.3m itb will probably do Montoya to Otamendi next week

    Pope - Button
    VVD - Digne - Soyuncu - Montoya - Lundstram
    Salah - Sterling - Mount - Ceballos - Cantwell
    Aguero - Barnes - Greenwood
