A number of Fantasy Premier League managers inside the top 10,000 deployed key chips for Gameweek 5.

5.2% of them opted to use the Wildcard over the international break, while 2.6% went for a Triple Captain.

With each passing Gameweek, the top 10k becomes less and less influenced by those who used multiple chips in the earliest rounds.

With Gameweek 5 now in the mix, only 37.9% of those in the highest echelon of FPL have deployed two chips.

12.7% have used three while 3.8% have already committed four of their chips.

As things stand, 32.2% of those in the top 10k have now used their Wildcard and we can also take a look at which players were the most popular in the Gameweek 5 editions.

By far, the most fashionable option in Gameweek 5 Wildcards among top 10k managers is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m).

He has been selected in 77.2% of such squads, 7% more than any other player – which made for plenty of frustration when it was revealed he was on the bench for the trip to Norwich City.

Behind the Belgian is, not surprisingly, budget Sheffield United defender John Lundstram (£4.2m), who has been racking up regular game-time in the Blades’ central midfield trio.

Interestingly, it would appear that a number of Fantasy managers at the top level are opting for a double-pivot of bargain bucket defenders.

41.8% of top 10k managers who Wildcarded for Gameweek 5 also included Crystal Palace’s injured centre-back Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in their side.

That brings the total of top 10k managers in possession of both Lundstram and Kelly to 23.7%.

It is clear that the double savings in defence were influenced by interest in the more expensive Manchester City attackings.

Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) was snapped up by 66.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 5 with 58.4% going for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), making him the most-fashionable forward in such squads.

Interestingly, a total of 30.2% of the top 10k Wildcarders opted for both players in their brand new squads, although the two combined for just one attacking return against Norwich.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), who scored nine points in Saturday’s lunch-time game also features in the Wildcard picture here with 65.4% of those wielding that chip among the top 10k retaining faith in him.

The 35.7% who brought in Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) will be very happy with his huge haul away at Wolves and it’s interesting to see that he was preferred to fellow goal-scorer Mason Mount (£6.4m), who did not feature among the most popular midfield assets.

Instead, the man in that price bracket who drew the attention of Wildcarders in the top 10k was Daniel James (£6.2m), although he blanked against Leicester while Mount found the net late-on at Wolves.

We saw that Gameweek 3 Wildcards at this level largely featured a disposal of Liverpool defenders, but they are clearly back in fashion despite failing to keep a second clean sheet of the campaign against Newcastle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) both feature among the most popular defenders in top 10k Wildcards, the right-back selected in 45.9% of these and his centre-back colleague in 29.9%.

Gameweek 5 Captains

Meanwhile, there was a big difference between the top 10k and everybody else when it came to choosing captains for Gameweek 5.

Those in the upper echelons largely favoured Aguero, with 39.1% of them handing the Manchester City man the armband.

Salah was backed by 30.9% and Sterling 19.2%.

The vote was much more evenly split from an overall perspective with Salah just about the most popular with a share of 23.3%.

Sterling was just behind him on 21.5% while Aguero was off in third place with 15.4%.

Not surprisingly given Norwich’s situation coming into Gameweek 5, there were also a number of Triple Captain chips deployed in the top 10k.

As already mentioned, 2.6% of them played this enhanced captaincy chip.

The majority of these were played on Aguero, 1.2% of those in the top 10k choosing the Manchester City forward, 0.6% on Sterling and 0.6% on Salah.

    My team is
    Pope Heaton
    Lundstram Mina Zinchenko TAA AWB
    Sterling Salah KDB Hayden Dendoncker
    Pukki Greenwood Barnes

    1 FT 2.0m
    Thoughts?
    Would you a) Hayden/Dendoncker->Cantwell
    b) Hold and Zinckenko/Mina/AWB to 4.5 next week and Greenwood->Abraham

I'd personally go Cantwell this week based on his playing position and Norwich style of play. Only issue is doubling up on Norwich. They do look energetic tho

Not really. I was also gonna add another paragraph on my original post. something like, "saying that, I would still want Abraham in and would even consider a hit".

To be honest mate, I am lost unsure as you :/

After yesterday's match is it worth keeping a Man City defender? Currently got Otamendi and thinking could downgrade and use money in midfield.

Pep will have a talk with the team about underestimating the opponent, extra defense training including Fernandinho as CB and their defense will improve. Otamendi might not be nailed since he gifted Pukki's goal.

I think i would have a striker above 7.5, like haller/pukki/abraham, since you have 4 defenders above 5.5 and 5 mids above 6m i would restructure to get lets say, lanzini and Wesley to cantwell and haller?

Who should I swap out, Matip or Zinchenko?

Folks are bringing Matip in (according to FPL stats) whilst the opposite Zin.

Liverpool have some challenging fixtures and pool cant keep a cleanie.

Zin is likely to lose his spot (or at least share minutes) to Mendy and looked woeful yesterday.

Looking to bring in Aurier (or poss Maitland-Niles)

    1. MTPockets
      6 years, 11 months ago

Mci still have better defensive fixtures. Will pep be in a hurry to replace Zinchenko with Mendy, in defensive terms? Not so sure

I considered that too but reading it back really makes me think you could well be right. Hair is already going grey, gonna need some of that hair dye classic, Grecian 2000 by the end of the season.

        1. MTPockets
          6 years, 11 months ago

You could also be correct though. Mendy wasn't even in yesterday's squad to maybe check who's there in CL midweek (same for Liv and Matip)

      2. bench boost for every gamew…
        • 9 Years

Might be worse fixture but if PEP plays that backline they will concede more often than not. And it´s not like they have a ready made cb on bench, Laporte is dead you know. Mendy won´t fix defence, neither will DInho or Cancelo. Watford seems nice but Eve/wolves will score, then palace who never scores but often does vs City, Villa and Sou before Liverpool away. 2 CS in 7 games, Liverpool will match that, because defense is much better. And their assets more goal/assist potential

    Yay or nay?

    Pope
    Ota Soy Mina Montoya Lundstram
    Mane KdB Sterling McGinn Cantwell
    Kane Pukki Barnes

Can do Kane and McGinn for Son and Abraham.

Will cost -4, but have exact funds today, so a .1 price rise will screw it up.

Ideally I would like to wait until after CHL, but surely Son and/or Abra will rise before.

Salah away vs that defense? That´s a bit risky, but Auba could be good and great otherwise. What´s the math here, do you play Cantwell instead of someone and if so, whom? Salah/Wesly vs Auba/Pukki sounds ok ish, but the -4 would be dependant on the last player involvement.

Tough to say. Despite the lack of pts Robertson's looked pretty good in every game I've seen. But premium price for dearth of clean sheets is a problem. Next 7 fixtures don't look super promising either defensively.

Based on his performance, you would have to have balls the size of Pep's to drop him

      4.5 fodder to 4.4

And then you can upgrade Yoshida to Tomori

Watch the game today. Maybe Pepe over Son gives you that 0.1m as well. If you do that, you basically have my team except (Mane + Abraham vs Salah + Wesley)

    Just putting this out there...

As an Norwich season ticket holder for 30 plus years, 4 generations of us going at times, last night was everything about supporting your team that makes football great. I enjoy the FF side of the game as a bit if fun with work mates, but go and watch your team.

Interesting to see that James Egersdorff has got off to a very good start out of the media spotlight. Contrast with Matthew Jones who is in the full glare of the spotlight.

Down own but it would seem crazy to drop him before he plays Norwich at home.

After yesterday's match is there any sens in having a triple Pool attack (Salah, Mané, Firmino)? The next few matches are tough but if they want to be champions they must find goals. With Oigi's injury the risk of rotation is lessen, correct?
