A number of Fantasy Premier League managers inside the top 10,000 deployed key chips for Gameweek 5.

5.2% of them opted to use the Wildcard over the international break, while 2.6% went for a Triple Captain.

With each passing Gameweek, the top 10k becomes less and less influenced by those who used multiple chips in the earliest rounds.

With Gameweek 5 now in the mix, only 37.9% of those in the highest echelon of FPL have deployed two chips.

12.7% have used three while 3.8% have already committed four of their chips.

As things stand, 32.2% of those in the top 10k have now used their Wildcard and we can also take a look at which players were the most popular in the Gameweek 5 editions.

By far, the most fashionable option in Gameweek 5 Wildcards among top 10k managers is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m).

He has been selected in 77.2% of such squads, 7% more than any other player – which made for plenty of frustration when it was revealed he was on the bench for the trip to Norwich City.

Behind the Belgian is, not surprisingly, budget Sheffield United defender John Lundstram (£4.2m), who has been racking up regular game-time in the Blades’ central midfield trio.

Interestingly, it would appear that a number of Fantasy managers at the top level are opting for a double-pivot of bargain bucket defenders.

41.8% of top 10k managers who Wildcarded for Gameweek 5 also included Crystal Palace’s injured centre-back Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in their side.

That brings the total of top 10k managers in possession of both Lundstram and Kelly to 23.7%.

It is clear that the double savings in defence were influenced by interest in the more expensive Manchester City attackings.

Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) was snapped up by 66.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 5 with 58.4% going for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), making him the most-fashionable forward in such squads.

Interestingly, a total of 30.2% of the top 10k Wildcarders opted for both players in their brand new squads, although the two combined for just one attacking return against Norwich.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), who scored nine points in Saturday’s lunch-time game also features in the Wildcard picture here with 65.4% of those wielding that chip among the top 10k retaining faith in him.

The 35.7% who brought in Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) will be very happy with his huge haul away at Wolves and it’s interesting to see that he was preferred to fellow goal-scorer Mason Mount (£6.4m), who did not feature among the most popular midfield assets.

Instead, the man in that price bracket who drew the attention of Wildcarders in the top 10k was Daniel James (£6.2m), although he blanked against Leicester while Mount found the net late-on at Wolves.

We saw that Gameweek 3 Wildcards at this level largely featured a disposal of Liverpool defenders, but they are clearly back in fashion despite failing to keep a second clean sheet of the campaign against Newcastle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) both feature among the most popular defenders in top 10k Wildcards, the right-back selected in 45.9% of these and his centre-back colleague in 29.9%.

Gameweek 5 Captains

Meanwhile, there was a big difference between the top 10k and everybody else when it came to choosing captains for Gameweek 5.

Those in the upper echelons largely favoured Aguero, with 39.1% of them handing the Manchester City man the armband.

Salah was backed by 30.9% and Sterling 19.2%.

The vote was much more evenly split from an overall perspective with Salah just about the most popular with a share of 23.3%.

Sterling was just behind him on 21.5% while Aguero was off in third place with 15.4%.

Not surprisingly given Norwich’s situation coming into Gameweek 5, there were also a number of Triple Captain chips deployed in the top 10k.

As already mentioned, 2.6% of them played this enhanced captaincy chip.

The majority of these were played on Aguero, 1.2% of those in the top 10k choosing the Manchester City forward, 0.6% on Sterling and 0.6% on Salah.

Barnes tends to go on scoring streaks for a couple of games and then goes quiet for a long time. There is no change in Burnley tactics, formation, team etc that suggests he’ll significantly overperform his last two years’ stats.

Hoping for an Iwobi benching. Last GW he really seemed to affect Digne's runs up the pitch. When Iwobi was subbed off, Digne got an assist not long after.

    Would you WC such team:

    Pickford, Button
    VVD, TAA, Montoya, KWP, Lund
    Sterling, KDB, Salah, Mount, Hayden,
    Haller, Pukki, Greenwood

Would love to include Abraham, maybe Son, maybe some LEI before their soft schedule.
What stops me is that Pickford is having SHU and for sure would move VVD, Montoya, KWP but don't see good replacements atm.

Just try to build your WC team and see if you like it, I quite like your team except Montoya and KWP, Pickford is a bit of a luxury, prefer Pope for 1m less but fixtures are good. I would rather have Digne from Everton if you decide to WC, something like:Pope-TAA-Digne-Alder/Vert-Soyuncu-Lundstram.

Thinking of maybe losing Ederson to free up some funds elsewhere, anyone else have any decent suggestions?

No chance. Aguero and Vardy are FPL legends and getting rid of Pukki is fail on epic proportions.

Sterling (WAT) Salah (CHE) Mount (LIV) KDB (WAT) Cantwell (BUR)
Tammy (LIV) Pukki (BUR) Haller (MUN)

Who to bench from this lot?

      Mount I guess...

This is why I have 4.5m striker fodder so I don't have to make these difficult decisions and get it wrong.

This was my dilemma last night I found a way to just do Salah to Mané then McGinn to Cantwell and Wickham to Abraham before the price rises it coz me -8 bit I think long term it’s a solid move

I did Salah to Son and Greenwood for Abraham yesterday for -4. I am watching the Spurs match replay now and honestly it looks like Salah > Son was upgrade. Son is in form. No regrets here.

Norwich played very deep and when it's so, it doesn't suit Sterling very much, he was unlucky though with the post in the first half and made some good passes, shoud've been more than 2 pts for him.

I can't believe I am considering Dendoncker to Cantwell for -4. I have been planning this move for a quite long period and there seems never to be right time for it. Yet it would have paid off. Last season I was many times .2 short of good transfers and Dendonks looks likely to drop and Cantwell to rise in price.

Next week I will have to start either Hayden or VvD and tbh that sounds like 2 pts. Cantwell getting returns is about 50/50 imo. Is this -4 gamble pure lunacy or decent long term move?

    1. FOO FIGHTER
      • 6 Years

Cantwell far more points than Dendo on your bench.

    3. MTPockets

I don't find the 'long term move' argument a good one, because transfers can still be postponed for one week for long term - 1 gw. But if you've planned it for a while and other stuff always come up then yeah would just get it done.

I have 2FT and I'm still considering Dendo > Cant -4, I like that it actually gives me an option of formation change rather than fodder, I'm playing 4 at the back every week with Dendo and Greenwood on the bench at the moment.

People are going on about you need a strong defense, but every defense has been crap, so why waste money on it? So many points in midfield and up front. May as well go super cheap and get players that actually get points.

It all could change in a flash though. Having a super cheap defence might be a very big headache to fix.

And yet this happens every year. We used to discuss season long trends a few years ago. Now its just A or B and nobody learns.

    4. MTPockets
      6 years, 11 months ago

Tends to happen most years. Then summer analysis concludes a buy and hold big-5 defence would have been best (which nobody does in practice) and we start again

I don't think it has anything to do with having a strong or weak anything in general. You can't generalise like that and make sense imo. It's mostly about the individuals.

I still think TAA, Robertson and Digne are great value, or have enough potential for me to exercise patience with them.

However, if I thought Robertson had to go, then I would replace him with the next best value option, with some consideration to the transfer combinations possible. That may well be a cheap defender and it could mean rotation, but I wouldn't go cheap because of a belief that cheap is better, nor expensive because expensive is better. It's just about the players. If I only liked Digne as a premium, then I would only own 1 premium: Digne. Etc

I don't understand the urge to have a big defence or small defence. I definitely feel it, myself too, but I don't understand it. Maybe we like our teams to have themes (like 'big up top', etc), personality, or we just want our decisions to have the biggest impact. In any case, it's bogus anti-rationalism. Just pick the combination of players you think are the best for FPL points, et voila.

Can only fit in 3/4 of

    Aguero
    Sterling

    Salah/Mane
    Son
    Auba

Currently leaning towards Aguero, Salah and Son...
