Brighton 3-0 Spurs

Goals: Aaron Connolly x 2 (£4.5m), Neal Maupay (£6.0m),

Assists: Lewis Dunk (£4.6m)

Bonus: Connolly x3, Dunk x2, Maupay x1

Just when Tottenham’s season appeared to have reached its lowest point, Brighton plunged Mauricio Pochettino’s men into further despair with a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Such a devastating result, so soon after 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich, may have all but ended Fantasy interest in Spurs’ assets moving forward.

However, we should take nothing away from Brighton who were comfortably the better side and will almost certainly be the source of Fantasy investment the other side of the upcoming international break.

The Seagulls have three more favourable fixtures on the horizon with a trip to Aston Villa in Gameweek 9 before Everton and Norwich visit the Amex Stadium.

Maupay scored Brighton’s first goal of the afternoon

Graham Potter’s side were quicker, sharper and hungrier than last season’s Champions League finalists with Neal Maupay (£6.0m) and budget striker Aaron Connolly (£4.5m), making his first Premier League start, both impressing.

However, it must be said that the game turned on an unfortunate chain of events in the opening minutes, which Spurs never really came back from.

Another huge error from Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) was pounced upon by Maupay who, after the goalkeeper had dropped an easy catch, only had to head the ball over the line from less than a yard out.

The Frenchman had to be stretchered off the pitch with a potential broken arm suffered in the awkward landing and needed to take on oxygen, and later morphine, before going to A&E.

Lloris did serious damage to his arm in conceding Brighton’s opening goal

Pochettino confirmed in his post-match comments that Lloris’ injury is potentially a serious blow.

“He’s in the hospital now. I think the club is going to communicate the problem but it’s not good news. We need to wait on communication because he suffered a big problem in the arm.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Although Spurs currently do not look like a team worthy of defensive investment, the potential emergence of Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m) as a starting option in a typically top-six Premier League side will be worth monitoring for managers looking to save money at the back.

Meanwhile, Maupay’s opening strike was his third league goal of the season, and although his opener in the lunch-time kick-off was fortunate, his positioning and desire to attack the final third mean the Frenchman is well and truly on the Fantasy radar.

Connolly was the star performer for Brighton on Saturday afternoon

However, this was an afternoon that belonged to youngster Connolly, whose exciting movement led to him grabbing his first and second Premier League goals in one afternoon.

Connolly was exceptional at the Amex, with the addition of three bonus points taking the £4.5m striker to a 13-point haul. The Irishman’s first of the afternoon was a well-taken flick after Gazzaniga had saved his initial shot.

His second goal demonstrated the striker’s raw ability as he charged through the Tottenham defence and curled a beautiful shot past the reach of the Spurs keeper. Playing an excellent ball out of defence, Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) registered the assist, ensuring the Brighton captain recorded a 10-point haul once the clean sheet had been banked.

It would be difficult for Potter to resist starting the 19-year-old again after such a sensational full league debut, although he is well-known for tinkering with his team from week-to-week.

Either way, Connolly’s manager was certainly full of praise after such an impressive full debut. The player did appear to come off injured at the end of the game but it did not look serious and should not prevent the youngster from being involved after the international break.

“He’s been knocking on the door, to be honest. He’s had some substitute appearances and been unlucky not to score. He just gives us an extra dimension as I said before the game. Obviously, I’m delighted we’ve got him with us. He took his goals well, the second one was a good piece of attacking play.” – Graham Potter

Lewis Dunk got himself a 10-point haul against Spurs

This was a strong team performance from Brighton, both offensively and defensively, that will give huge faith to those managers in ownership of their assets.

However, there can be no doubting that Pochettino’s side were bordering on dismal in their performance on the south coast and certainly aided Brighton’s cause.

Kane barely had a sniff against Brighton

While Spurs have had a number of poor results over the last few weeks – namely their 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League in mid-week – this was a game that compounded the pressure on the manager and players alike.

Pochettino’s side were sluggish from the outset at the Amex, and the injury to Lloris seemed to set the tone for their performance in the lunch-time kick-off.

“To concede and lose your captain is a massive impact on not just emotionally but for the team as well. He is an important player for us as well. We tried to find a solution, a different way to play. It was impossible. We are in a difficult moment but we have to keep going.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Although the likes of Son Heung-min (£9.8m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) possess unquestionable goalscoring potential, this is a Spurs side in a state of fragmentation who are seemingly lacking any form of coherence and confidence.

Pochettino did attempt to salvage a result from the game, with the Argentinian making changes to both Tottenham’s tactics and personnel after half-time.

Pochettino tried to get back into the game with a back-three but it did not make a difference

Harry Winks (£5.4m) came on for Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m), with Spurs also switching to a back-three of Eric Dier (£4.9m) Jan Vertonghen (£5.3m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.5m). Ben Davies (£5.4m) and Moussa Sissoko (£5.0m) pushed further forward to assist in the final third as wing-backs.

This was, however, all in vain, as Connolly’s second put the game out of reach and Spurs were left to rue yet another disappointing result in the Premier League.

A one-match suspension for Serge Aurier (£4.9m) had led to Pochettino using Sissoko at right-back, but this was a game that pointed to wider issues in this Tottenham team that are deeper-rooted than individual performances or suspensions.

By contrast, this was a result that had seemingly evaded Brighton since the opening weekend victory over Watford, despite some decent performances in that time.

After such a clinical performance from Connolly in particular, Fantasy interest could once again be gravitating towards the Amex if Potter’s side can maintain their momentum after such an impressive victory – and he can stick with the same personnel from one week to the next.

What to do with 2 FTs here?

    Pope
    TAA Otamendi Tomori Soyuncu
    Salah Sterling Son
    Wilson Abraham Pukki

    Button / Cantwell / Lundstram / Nakamba

Options that have crossed my mind:
    A. Son & Nakamba 》 Maddison & Mount

    B. Salah, Pukki & Cantwell 》 Mount, Aubameyang, Tielemans (-4)

    C. Suggestions welcome 🙂

Did look at that one last night. Was put off by the Pukki vs Vardy comparisons as Pukki seems to come out on top lol. Vardy's price annoys me. But definitely one to consider over the break.

I have the funds to do: Salah, Wickham and Pukki --> Auba, Wilson and Maddisson for -4. Does it sound like a sensible move?

Does to me. Still not sure if I can get rid of Liverpool attacker myself though. Man Utd and Spurs could both get a spanking by Liverpool.

Benching headache for now. Rest of the mid/fwd line is: Sterling/KDB/Mount/Cantwell and Haller. Reckon Cantwell would be warming the bench most weeks.

Jiminez is greatly missed at the moment. Would be a perfect straight swap for Pukki as have 7.2

What a headache Pukki is. Not prepared to take a -4 and have nobody I wish to lose. Can't afford Tammy or Haller

Hoping (against likelihood) for a Tammy blank today to ease that pull towards him

      So what are my options.

      Jiminez
      King
      Wood, Barnes
      Wesley (horrible fix)
      Ings (horrible fix)

Do over two weeks by downgrading Pukki (Connelly) and upgrading elsewhere.

Thoughts? Could it really be that holding Pukki turns out to be the best option?

    Typical fpl weekend

Get up at 6 with no stress or anything, chatting here and exchanging opinions and actually getting replies and have a proper convo due to fewer people.
    Excitement level 10%

Getting back at 10, getting busy, 9 people are moaning for their red arrows and there is always the one that has done a crazy lucky move and gained 15 points out of nothing. Half an hour is enough to realise what am I doing here, I am a shiaaat manager!
    Excitement level 15%

Coming back in an hour, people are posting their teams, no team is taking less than -8 and half of them are Wildcarding (in reality only 2.87% will wc)
    Excitement level 7%

15 mins before the deadline, pages are changing faster than Jonjo shelvey trying to have a wee before the game.
I am posting that I need points from my C, nobody pays attention cause we all do the same.
    Excitement level 53%.

2 mins before the deadline, leaked squads from fpl experts, 97% of them are nonsense.
    Excitement level 90%

After the squads are out, we are all moaning and reply to each other, we simply can't stand this guy that celebrate for all his successful picks.

I wouldn't mind really. Doesn't harm me in any way if Mahrez hauls. Just playing on logic here, Bilva and Raz start according to me, If mahrez comes on at 75, its either a 1 point cameo or an assist, maybe a goal but an assist more likely. 1 or 4 points.

Going big on W/C while CS pts are too unpredictable (could rejig around Sterling/Mount in 4/5 weeks if need be):

    Ryan / (Button)
    Soy / Lundy / Tomo / (Rico / Kelly)
    Mane / Sterling / Mount / KDB / (4.5)
    Auba / Wilson / Tammy

Plan is to rotate Rico, Kelly and Lundy which gives a "blue" most weeks

I quite like the team structure even though many will disagree and say defense is light...I do however think the timing isn't right...for the next 4 I don't think Mane plus cheap defender gets you more than say yarm( other mf in same bracket) + Ota/perreira etc..post man City game for pool I intend to go with this structure as well

I actually only brought Jorg in this week for a 1 week punt with KDB injured. With Montoya keeping a cleanie, I kinda wish I rolled the FT!
Only got 1FT now with 0.1 ITB but would likely be able to fund getting Vardy in yes. Thinking more along the lines of Maddison as I do want some Arsenal cover and Auba is the only player worth his keep in that team.

Maddison's stats are good - but doesn't always pass the eye test. Can look out of it. Vardy great option but at an awkward price compared to Wilson/Tam.

Tielemans might be a really great punt for the coming weeks. 6 pts behind Maddy, .6 cheapre - decent attacking potential and seemingly nailed... punty tho.

Rodgers has never been a manager who has done well defensively with his teams. I can see his defence imploding soon.

His tactics always get figured out and EPL is on a different level to SPL.

Also do not see Soy as an FPL option. Nice price but offers no bonus as whoever watched him vs Pool, when he gets the ball he just kicks it out. If he does not get any clean sheets it will be 2 points more than often for him.

    1. AndyCook
      6 years, 9 months ago

It is very unusual for players to get bonus when they don’t perform any other point scoring actions, unless they are huge chance creators.

Leicester have the best defensive stats in the league.

As for Rodgers, i don't think you can say he is a bad manager, got Liverpool close to the league and is doing a great job with Leicester right now, especially considering they lost Maguire.

Rodgers is a decent coach, I am happy for LFC's sake that he does not manage us anymore.

He’s only 4.7m, though! Sure, you’ll get more offensive threat with Pereira but the price difference is huge. Çağlar did get into some dangerous positions yesterday, and what with the upcoming fixtures he’s a good option.

I think it depends on your team. If you only need one or two options in that range, Tomori and Burnley full backs are better. If you need a 3rd one or have Pope and don’t want a double-up, he isn’t a bad option.

Connolly set for bandwagon as Brighton end interest in Spurs
    458 CommentsSHARE

Couldn't face fielding a Brighton fwd regardless of his price, simply too many very good options up top

Odds on Ole and Silva both fired within a week?

Feel like they'll hold on to Silva for a while actually

If Newcastle win they drop into the relegation zone. His turnaround of form last year came when they had nothing to play for. Results wise, when it matters, it's absolutely not happening

Why? 17th is unacceptable for the Toffees. Don’t think they have lost 4 in a row since 2015 and achieved that yesterday with a loss to Burnley. Just awful

The problem is who do you replace them with.

Silva is certainly sailing close to the chop but Ole should be given more time as Utd have had a lot of injuries.

      Silva odds on

      OGS big price outsider

As a United fan myself i do not want to see thrown under the bus like some of his players have done with him.

United are missing some world class players in key positions to be where they need to be and blooding the youth will surly stand to us in the future at some stage.

Seems to be a bad culture among some players at United with the likes of a senior player like Jesse Lingard launching JLINGZ,his own clothing brand. If i was Ole i would launch Jesse through the front door of the club and use his head to open it while i was at it.

I think his hands are tied by Woodward and the owners and if anyone needs to go from United besides a few players that have taken their eye off the ball it is them lot.

I don't disagree. It seems in the past that you've mostly stood behind managers up to the point that CL qualification is mathematically impossible. Just think they'll break that mould this year. Unsure whether that'll be to fire Ole much earlier than that, or stick with him regardless.

I fear for you today though. Newcastle look great value at 4/1

    A) Wilson + Maddison

    or

    B) Vardy + Yarmo/McGinn

    Current Wildcard

    Pope (McGovern)

    TAA, Soyuncu, Montoya (Lundstram, Kelly)

    KDB, Mahrez, Sterling, Maddison, Mount

    Auba, Tammy, (Connolly)

1.0 ITB to potentially bring in Mane with a -4 or a Sterling straight swap.

Is no Liverpool Attacker too bold?

    Pope Button
    TAA Digne Söyüncü Mings Lundstram
    Salah Sterling Mount Yarmolenko Cantwell
    Tammy Pukki Greenwood

    1ft 4.7m itb

    Early thoughts on this bunch?

    A. Greenwood > Vardy
    B. Pukki > Auba
    C. Something else

    Cheers
