Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) proved to be the most popular captain among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 10.

The Belgian was neck-and-neck with Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) in the latest Fantasy Football Scout poll – each player exchanging top-spot throughout the week.

In the end, Sterling just edged, finishing the build-up to Gameweek 10 with the support of 29.4% of voters, while de Bruyne had 28.7%.

However, the top 10k managers were considerably unequivocal in comparison, with the cheaper of the two players proving the more popular captain.

31% of managers inside the top 10k handed the armband to de Bruyne as Aston Villa prepare to come to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

By contrast, Sterling, who arguably carries a greater threat of rotation compared to the other headline Manchester City assets, was backed by just 21.6% at this level.

After proving a favourite of the top 10k in recent weeks, Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) has dropped down to third place in the captaincy debate for managers at the top level.

That may have been influenced by his recent Gameweek 9 no show, although his 19.8% of captainers among the top 10k are probably encouraged by the fact that he’s had a rest in the last week and usually starts home matches.

Either way, we are expecting anyone who features from the beginning against Aston Villa to do well in Gameweek 10 – as those who read our recent Captain Sensible article will know.

In terms of the overall template in the top 10k, de Bruyne continues to consolidate his position as the most popular player.

His ownership at this level has now reached 77.4%, a gap of 11 percentage points compared to next most-fashionable John Lundstram (£4.6m).

Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) remains the most popular forward among the top 10k but Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) has dropped out of the top three.

He was in 38.3% of these squads for Gameweek 9 but has been replaced by Jamie Vardy (£9.1m), who contributed to a massive win at Southampton on Friday night.

Interestingly, Pukki and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) are still trusted by the wider world of FPL.

Also pertinent is the fact that de Bruyne is the third-most popular midfielder when the lower-ranked managers are taken into account.

Back to the top 10k, Aguero’s popularity has also dipped from 36.1% to 33.5% but he does face a favourable match-up this weekend.

Bournemouth appear to have been turned to for a source of budget defensive investment.

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) was the fifth-most popular defender for Gameweek 9, but he has been replaced by Diego Rico (£4.2m) ahead of the Cherries trip to Watford.

Fantasy managers at the top level appear to be eyeing up Wolves’ favourable fixtures.

They face Newcastle this weekend, before travelling to Arsenal, hosting Aston Villa and facing Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Naturally, Liverpool and Manchester City are the teams using up most of the slots in squads among the top 10k.

However, Wolves are sat in second place with an average of 1.8 of their players in top 10k squads.

Finally, an update on the chip usage among managers at this level.

47.4% of these have now used their Wildcards, which understandably remains the most deployed of the chips.

The Triple Captain has been spent by 25.5%, 13.7% have used the Free Hit and 13.9% the Bench Boost.

But this result needs to be put into context.

Southampton played all but 12 minutes of last night's game with 10 men. They were already a goal down at that point so were mentally probably already in a hole when that happened.

You would expect some sort of reaction to tonight's result next weekend, even though Southampton are pretty dire.

City should win, but I wouldn't go into it expecting tonight's result to be replicated.

It was him & Chilwell on that Left flank caused all the havoc that proved the reason for Battering.
Very very sharp movements from them & Southampton just let them score goals with no defensive tackles

Did you watch the match? He was very very deep and picking the ball up from the defenders. I wouldn’t be surprised if Barnes, Tielemans, Chilwell, Periera, Perez all had more advanced heat maps. It’s a real concern

I agree, that's why I say I'm not a fan of him FPL wise. That said, it's nothing new and he has still found a way to pick up points as of late (albeit some when playing more advanced against the tougher teams).

Yes, I know, but that was the case when people were bringing him in as well. He only tends to play on the wing in the tougher games from what I've seen and since the fixtures were tough early doors I think people's opinion of Maddison was skewed a little bit.

yep the manager's recent comments indicate he wants to go with Martial and Rashford up top, and they have an excellent fixture run. The caveats are probably
                        1. United's form - not scoring many. (they were doing ok when he was playing though, so maybe that improves)
                        2. Lots of fixtures - they play chelsea in the league cup and you have to hope he benches him in the Europa League games

Trossard - tough fixture run after Norwich
CHO - many of us tripled up on chelsea already
Yarmolenko - Fixtures stiffen soon, and West Ham seem to have lost a bit of mojo

Problem with James is that if united play 3-5-2, with Rash and Martial up front, he can only play as wingback (not really suitable for him).
Even in 4-2-3-1 with Martial back and Rash on the left, James is stuck on the right where his goalscoring potential is much more limited

What could get worse ? 2 shocking gameweeeks with a good side. Vardy at a price point difficult to get. Season ending result unless a miracle happens in the other direction. I like to sleep in on Sundays. Maybe church is the answer!

Tonight's result was a freak. Vardy is a good option of course, but tonight's points are lost and there are always other players that will score points. There's plenty left to play for, so this is far from a season ending result.

My gut says that after 2 generally low scoring weeks for highly owned players, this week will see a rash of hauls and a GW average score of close to 60. The freak result last night will seem less scary for non Vardy owners, and we might see a cricket score from Citeh.

It's impossible to know which Leicester mid to for for. 2 attackers seem essential right now with 1 being Vardy:

Perez - explosive, not nailed, inconsistent
Madison - passed eye test, set pieces, plays SO deep
Tielemans - passes eye test, very on and off, YC magnet
Barnes - eye test, unproven, not nailed

It reminded me of the Spurs game letting in 7. Everything did go Leicester way and heads went down at 3 0. Watch for the Vardy bandwagon.

      Some Maddison stats from yesterday
115 touches, the second highest of any player (Chillwell 130)
ONE touch in the opposition penalty box

      I have Tielemans.

Wanted Vardy but logistically would have meant getting rid of Kun and keeping Pukki. Wanted to keep Kun for next 2 fixtures though so did Cantwell to Tielemans instead.

Everyone's going to jump on the Vardy train now, though, and he'll be at least £9.5m by the end of next week.

I’ve Maddison & Vardy - they’ve just notched 38 points in the 2 GW’s since I brought them in so have been a resounding success

That being said, Maddison was very deep lying vs Southampton & Leicester got very few set pieces - it was just as well he got the FK

He looked much more threatening last week v Burnley albeit he blanked

In the cold light of day I think I’ll give him next two games - he has 3 goals in 4 games at the end of the day - but yesterday was frustrating and could have triggers mass sales had he blanked

      1. Pukki Blinders

was he playing this deep against Burnley? If not hopefully this was a one week thing. Most creative man in the team can't be playing DM every week surely...

His average position against Burnley was as far forward as Vardy, and he had several attempts at goal, mostly pot shots but even that’s ok as he’s quite handy from long range

But it was quite strange yesterday how he managed to avoid involvement in almost every goal

Just a bad day at the office, and could easily return v Palace & Arsenal - to his credit he seems to be developing a very welcome ability to grind out a goal or an assist in most games

But from watching the game yesterday there’s Still that nagging feeling the FK got us out of jail as owners and he really should have blanked

This why i got shot of sterling and kun. Kept KDB as he is imo the only main stay in the team and even he has been rested ( norwich).

There are more FPL assists out There this season getting decent points.
