Manchester City 3-0 Aston Villa

Goals: Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), David Silva (£7.7m), Ilkay Gündogan (£5.2m)

Assists: Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m), Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m)

Bonus Points: Sterling x3, Ederson x2 (£6.1m), Silva x1, Gundogan x 1

Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa was a match that both elated and devastated managers in ownership of popular Manchester City assets.

Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) finally got back in the goals to reward those who had both kept the faith and handed him the captain’s armband for Gameweek 10.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) owners were less fortunate. They witnessed the Belgian awarded Manchester City’s second goal of the afternoon, only to see the Premier League Goal Accreditation panel alter the decision after the full-time whistle.

De Bruyne was initially awarded City’s second goal – before it was given to David Silva

There had been a strong suggestion that David Silva (£7.7m) had touched the ball on its way into the net, which the aforementioned panel confirmed by awarding the Spaniard the goal, downgrading de Bruyne’s points to those of an assist.

There was also a knock-on effect for Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) who had originally been given the assist when the goal was considered de Bruyne’s. The overturned decision removed five points from the Frenchman’s score, three for the assist and a further two bonus.

While Sterling and De Bruyne’s attacking returns will still be (relatively) pleasing to managers who had backed the duo to deliver, there can be no looking past Guardiola’s decision to not only bench Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), but to give the Argentinian a 15-minute cameo for a one-point return.

This was the first time since last December that Guardiola opted to start Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) for a second successive league game, and the Brazilian duly delivered to justify his manager’s decision. Just as the second half was getting underway, Jesus flicked a header onto Sterling to claim an assist for the Englishman’s goal.

Aguero watched most of this match from the bench and came on for a one-point cameo

Given Aguero’s benching and his manager’s notorious reputation for rotating his star men, there can be now no guarantees as to whether the premium forward will start matches on a regular basis. Previously, it had been thought he was safe for home matches – that is clearly no longer the case.

However, the true nature of the dilemma for his owners is that the next side to come to the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League are Southampton, who were so bad defensively against Leicester that they conceded nine goals. Aguero owners may find it hard to sell him ahead of such an appealing fixture.

Whilst the game was naturally dominated by both the presence and absence of Manchester City’s attacking assets, a second consecutive clean-sheet will be pleasing for those managers invested in their defence. In Gameweek 10, City looked assured at the back to weather a number of promising Villa attacks.

Mendy has returned to the Fantasy radar and seemingly improved Sterling’s prospects too

The emergence of Mendy and right-back Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) in the full-back positions could allow greater confidence of starts for Fantasy managers compared to those at centre-back.

It must also be said that Mendy’s return to the team is likely a key reason why we’ve seen Sterling score four goals in his last two matches. The Englishman was forced to stay out wide while Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) was holding down the fort on the left, but he has come back into the middle now that Mendy is back. Zinchenko’s long-term injury should ensure he’s in the team for a prolonged spell if he can stay fit.

As mentioned, it’s harder to invest in the middle of Manchester City’s defensive unit right now.

Fernandinho was sent off against Aston Villa

Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Rodri (£5.5m) had formed a promising centre-back partnership against Palace, but an injury for the latter saw John Stones (£5.3m) return to the side for this one.

Furthermore, there was something of a blot on Fernandinho’s copybook in Gameweek 10 as he was sent off in the 87th minute for a second bookable offence.

The Brazilian will not miss Gameweek 10 though as his one-match suspension can be spent on the upcoming midweek EFL Cup tie against Southampton – leaving him available to face the Saints in the Premier League.

However, it will still be interesting to see either of the fit and recognised centre-backs in Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m), who was on the bench against Villa, and Stones, who impressed against Villa, work their way into Guardiola’s plans.

With Sterling and D Silva both getting their names on the scoresheet, it was Ilkay Gundogan (£5.2m) who capped off an impressive team display with a well-taken goal to add gloss to the scoreline on an afternoon where City were not at their best.

Against a newly-promoted side who are visiting the Etihad, the Citizens will have scope to not be playing at the imperious standards they have set for themselves, but sterner tests are likely to arise  – with Guardiola’s side having shown their vulnerability at home in the defeat to Wolves in Gameweek 8.

Grealish (right) did ask some questions of the Manchester City defence but left the Etihad Stadium on crutches

For Dean Smith and Villa, the first-half display was a template performance as to how to frustrate City at home whilst also creating a number of genuine chances.

Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and Wesley Moraes (£6.1m) pressed Guardiola’s defensive unit, although the Brazilian striker did look isolated at times given the fact that the majority of Villa’s chances came on the counter-attack.

Villa’s captain Grealish ended up leaving the City ground on crutches having been substituted in the 84th minute, and the extent of the injury will have to be assessed ahead of the West Midlands side’s game against Liverpool next weekend.

An impressive performance from John McGinn (£5.9m) was nearly capped with a consolation goal late in the game, though the Scotsman struck the post as City held on to close the gap to three points with league leaders Liverpool ahead of their clash against Tottenham on Sunday.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Mendy (Angeliño 73′), Fernandinho, Stones, Cancelo; Gundogan, D Silva, De Bruyne (Foden 76′); Sterling (Aguero 76′), Jesus, B Silva.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Heaton; Targett, Engels, Mings, Guilbert; Nakamba, Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Grealish, Trezeguet, Wesley (Davis 71′).

Watford's defence turned a corner in GW8. The reason I have Janmaat

I've just done this, although I'm still starting Mount and Tammy. Norwich is as good a game for Connolly as ever, after which he'll be nailed to my bench for ages

So... Soy to Robbo will happen 🙂

I brought cho in last week. Read Frank Sinclair saying he was rested because: just back from long injury, he's 19, played 3 games in quick succession so they won't be playing him every game. Then factor in pulisic's form means I'll be transfering him back out.

    Pope
    TAA. Lundstram. Tomori.
    Sterling. KDB. Mount. Maddison. Mané.
    Abraham. Vardy.

    McGovern. Connolly. Soyuncu. Rico.

I really have no idea what you should do (team's too damn good), but the moves you have in mind define overmanagement. Especially since Tielemans outscored Madders but they both scored... And LIV hasn't even played yet, with Mane ahead of Salah while being one start behind, weirdly. I guess it would be clearer after the Pool game anyway

            I understand.
It is probably best to burn a FT. But like you said, will be clearer after this GW and midweek games.

My thoughts is that I’d love to have Salah back. Because, it’s Salah!
And Maddison to Tielemans to find the move, isn’t a bad one at all.

Members area comparison of Connolly and Wilson over Connolly’s three starts GW8-10 is hilarious

He actually holds his own vs. Wilson, exceeds him in several areas in fact

I think he’s a decent enabler for 3-5-2 in a swap for bench duties with Cantwell

Startable GW11 too provided Trossard return doesn’t oust him from the line-up - maybe safely allows cover for “one more week” for Ota to try to leave owners with a parting gift v Southampton

Is he the best attacking “bench” player in the game given the alternatives I wonder? You need one bencher out of those front 8

Mids looking better than forwards once again so 3-5-2 over 3-4-3 possibly makes sense I think

Just Sterling for me. Going to find it very difficult to sell him at any stage to be honest. Might suffer a bit in the Southampton game should Aguero start and go bananas or De Bruyne hauls. Come what may. Not in the business of 1gw transfers for the most part.

  16. Don Kloppeone

So I semi-rage played my FTs last night before price changes and this is how the team looks:

    0.4itb 0FT
    Pope
    TAA, Lunds, Rico
    Mané, KDB, Mount, Barnes
    Aguero*, Vardy, Abraham
    (McGovern) (Willems, Dendo, Boly*)

Boly is an issue but not worth a hit for the sake of 0.1. Plan to see what/ if Kun plays midweek and decide whether to keep (and maybe attempt to cap again!) or ditch.

The move would be: Kun, Dendo > Connolly, Sterling but would mean hits

    Thoughts appreciated as ever!

You ignored the sensible advice given yesterday and have already used your frees on nonessential transfers through impatience, rather than
      1. Transferring out the problems in your team (Boly Kun)
      2. Waiting for any injuries in EFL games

Which means its pointless asking for advice

      1. Don Kloppeone

You’ve never made a silly move in the spur of the moment? Congratulations on being a fully evolved human 🙂

What can I say. A moment of weakness and it is what it is but why is it pointless asking for advice looking forward rather than dwelling on mistakes?

You did ask about 5 times and got good advice back......
Heres some more, you have spent your frees now, so log off FPL until next weekend.
          Then deal with Boly
I think you will be ok with Kun for next week, cant see him missing again. But long term, he's a problem

Don’t get me wrong I know you’re right.

I think my stupid moves always come when I come on here the night after a bad score and get swayed by tons of people jumping on moves.

-8 for just a sideways move inside City, seems risky. Boly is not a huge problem as is home to Arsenal anyway, willems is ok ish as WH away is decent from bench. This is hold for me, but Kun is difficult right now but deal with it next week as away to POOl is bad for City attacking assets-)

southampton is better away defensively than home and 9-0 defeat will make them more sound and resillient, that always happens to teams that get battered like this. City will surely win but something like 3-0 or 3-1.

i would not worry too much about that, reasonably good bench to take care of it, that´s an often overseen factor in early transfers, if you have a decent bench then it´s not the end of the word to do them. LIttle downside is of course that you might would want do something else later in week but i have also done the opposite, waited to last minute and my initial transfer thought turned out to better than the ones i made after tinkering a whole week-)

Reminder guys and girls. It’s carling Sorry elf cup week, so these line ups may have a bearing on the weekend line ups. For example I fully expect Aguero to play in midweek from the start, pep uses the midweek to usually even out the rotation, that’s what I’m hoping anyway as I got burnt on a 1 pt captain cameo by Aguero

    1. FOO FIGHTER

Think Pep's rotation is just going to get even more bizzarre as the GW's go on.

I expect Aguero to start in the EFL Cup too. Makes no sense given how many sitters Jesus misses.

This season Aguero has 8 PL goals against an xG of 6.8. Jesus has 3 PL goals against an xG of 4.3.
Last season Aguero got 21 PL goals against an xG of 20. Jesus got 7 PL goals against an xG of 12.5.

Everything suggests Aguero is a better player still, but Pep looks like he has some beef with Aguero hence playing him in rubbish CL games and EFL Cup games.

      1. diesel001
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Even holds true in 17/18 season:

Aguero got 21 PL goals against an xG of 18.6. Jesus got 13 PL goals against an xG of 15.4.

        1. Bigbars
          • 15 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

But don’t forget he reversed that at the beginning of the season starting Aguero and using Jesus in the cl and efl, so his team predicted lineups are all over the place, on paper sterling was expected to be rested, maybe he may rest him in midweek and play Foden, maybe he’s keeping Aguero back for Chelsea.
          Pep is consistently inconsistent

True. Just trying to find a FWD other than Tammy or Jiminez worth while but there ain't much.

Staying away from Wilson and Haller etc. Had Aguero and will not be reconsidering him ether as 12m on your bench is frustrating and costs you points.

So I may just decide who to keep between Jimenez and Tammy and downgrade one to get in Martial if he show promise today. Have Vardy so Martial as a 'striker' playing as my 5th mid could make up for one of Tammy/Jimenez.

Is Sterling essential next week? or better to have KDB+City defender

    A) Sterling+KDB (means wildcard)
    B) KDB (C) Cancelo (means Boly on bench)

Cant be essential if there is a chance he is randomly benched

I didn't watch the match, logged into my fpl team and was delighted by Cho's 0 points - have soy autosub only to find out that the bugger came on and got booked
