43.6% of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers were handed some much-needed luck on Saturday afternoon.

That was the percentage of those at the top level of the game who captained Jamie Vardy (£9.6m), more than any other option.

After assisting an Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) goal, the Leicester City forward missed a penalty which was converted by James Maddison (£7.5m).

That was set to reduce Vardy’s score by two points, with three added back on for the Fantasy assist.

However, completely outside of the player’s control, both a number of his colleagues and Brighton players encroached on the penalty area, forcing the referee to order a retake.

That wiped off the missed penalty from Vardy’s record, as well as the assist, and allowed him to score his seventh goal in five matches.

With a missed penalty no longer on his record, it also allowed Vardy to claim himself maximum bonus.

Therefore, the encroachment helped Vardy captainers secure a six-point swing, rounded up to 12 by the armband.

Meanwhile, Selhurst Park saw Sadio Mané (£12.1m) reward the 23.8% of top 10k managers who backed him for the captaincy.

With Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) rooted to the bench, the Senegalese was the primary goal threat and he duly delivered towards the end of the first half.

However, he was still four points short of Vardy’s total after that strange turn of events at the Amex Stadium.

The third-most popular skipper at this level was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who, as has been characteristic of him recently, disappointed his backers.

Just under 8% of the top 10k gave the Arsenal man the armband against Southampton and were probably hoping for slightly more than one assist, which was just his second attacking return since Gameweek 8.

As the underlying data suggested might happen, Aubameyang was outshone by his colleague Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) who scored twice and secured maximum bonus points too.

While the captaincy separates the fortunes of many managers in the top 10k for Gameweek 13, there were very little changes in the so-called template over the international break.

The top five most-popular defenders at this level have not changed from Gameweek 12 to 13.

It is still comprised of John Lundstram (£4.9m), Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Martin Kelly (£4.1m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m).

However, the ownership figures have admittedly been tweaked within that group.

Just 38% of the top 10k managers were in possession of Söyüncü for the 2-0 win over Arsenal, but this rose to 51% for Leicester’s 2-0 win over Brighton, the Foxes’ fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Meanwhile, it was slightly more disappointing for Alexander-Arnold and Rico owners as neither side kept a clean sheet.

Despite providing plenty of chances for his team-mates once again, Liverpool’s right-back continues to be outperformed by colleague Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who now has four attacking returns in five matches following an assist at Crystal Palace.

In the midfield, the template continues to be settled around five players.

However, there has been a shift towards Mané, whose ownership in the top 10k jumped from 69.5% to 80.1% over the international break.

Those who made the move from Salah to Mané were instantly rewarded as the Egyptian spent Gameweek 13 on the bench as his colleague scored nine points.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne dropped from 73.1% to 70.6%, while Sterling fell by an even larger amount, from 44.3% to 35.4%.

The Belgian managed to dish out some punishment with his first goal since Gameweek 6 in the Saturday evening clash with Chelsea but Sterling was denied the chance to by another questionable VAR offside call.

Conversely, a goal against Arsenal in Gameweek 12 triggered a rise in popularity for Maddison.

He rose from 31.4% ownership among the top 10k to 43.8% for Gameweek 13, but just as those captaining Vardy were a little lucky, Maddison owners were the victims of the corresponding misfortune.

He was the one who nodded home the rebound from the missed penalty, only to have it chalked off by the encroachment from both Leicester and Brighton.

With Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) largely outperforming his colleagues in recent weeks, it will be interesting to see if the decline in Mason Mount‘s (£6.8m) ownership will continue.

He was in 54.6% of top 10k teams for Gameweek 12 but just 48.7% of them for Gameweek 13, in which he featured only as a second-half substitute against Manchester City.

Finally, Raúl Jiménez (£7.4m) continues to justify a burst in his ownership among the top 10k, displacing Aubameyang as the third-most-popular forward at this level.

Yeah, you already have Tielemans on the bench, you would have to have another should-be-starter join him. Wouldn't bother with Aurier - you can't have them all, and even if you can, you can't play them all.

Jesus looks like he could drop in price tonight to £9.4m.

Anyone interested in acquiring his services if Aguero is out with that injury over the festive period?I have to admit that a 1.5% owned nailed City striker certainly intrigues me anyway.

Yeah, who to drop would be the real conundrum with those guys offering great value for money so far.

It would be a punt but that is what you have to do sometimes to get ahead of the curve.

    3. LSK
      • 8 Years

Don't think he's worth it. From memory, he rarely hauls even when he plays. Tends to get 1 goal in 3-4 nil wins from what I recall. Prefer Jimenez and more money in midfield. Think Sterling will benefit from his mobility though as they seem to interchange when he's on the pitch so sometimes Sterling finds himself up front.

    4. Pinturicchio10
      6 years, 8 months ago

I'd be hard pushed to sell one of Vardy, Jimenez, Abraham to be honest. Value and form. No real rotation worries as of yet. Yeah, sticking with those. Mind you if I was searching for a differential and had a 352 setup, Jesus would be a consideration should Aguero be rightly goosed and unavailable through December.

Think Sterling is a good option with Jesus on the pitch. Aguero is undoubtedly the better player, but there seems to be more movement and interchanging of positions when Jesus plays, making Sterling harder to pin down and keep quiet. He will get on the end of a few KDB crosses as well.

              Oh come on.

There are children starving to death. There are unimaginable things happening to people right now. If this game is giving you mental health issues, you need bigger things to worry about.

Now I love ff, if I do badly I feel down, that's normal with something you're passionate about. But it's not right to throw the term mental health around casually.

I'll get crucified for this no doubt. But remember, no one cares how good you are at ff, in fact, most people will think you are a loser for doing well.

Just enjoy the highs and lows of the game.

There are a lot of FPL pundits and quality managers who have commented on their mental health issues which have arisen from playing the game. Mental health and suicide are no joke regardless of third world issues. I understand your point of view but don’t dismiss it

                  The issue is that
people are substituting "mental health" for "emotions".

ie they aren’t comparable, but should be mutually exclusive and not let one affect the other

No kids. No wife. Terrible health. Mediocre job. Few friends. Still know how to take it on the chin when decisions on a football pitch don't go in favour of the players I've picked for my FPL team.

The game can certainly affect you if you let it.It is very important to take a deep breath, think what is really important in life and utter those immortal words "it's just a game"

You got a lot of stick for somethings you said on here which is not easy either sometimes,i know as i have been there.Just remember what does not kill you will make you stronger.

Well you know what i mean James is that when you are in a dark mental state that there is light at the end of the tunnel and coming through bad times will make you better at coping.

Mate I get it. I’ve had a family member go through it a while ago. Far far far tougher to deal with than anything physical I’ve faced.

Just taking the Micky out of the Nietzsche quote as it’s so often used.

(I’m a huge fan of Nietzsche. Read a lot of his stuff. Fave one is prob beyond god and evil)

    Which is better?

    A) Auba-Mount-Sterling——>Jesus-Alli-Mane (start Lunds vs Wolves)

    Or

    B) Auba-Nakamba-Sterling——>Ings-Son-Mane (start Ings vs Norwich)

I just brought in Kane this week would it be silly to move him on to Vardy a week later?

Not silly - was a nice punt. I got son and prefer him (better value). Could add him to your mid with the money you save.

    Evening folks!

    Pope
    TAA / Pereira / Lundstram / Janmaat*
    Mané / KDB / Tielemans / Mount
    Vardy / Abraham

    Button // Rico / Cantwell / Connolly

    A) Plan before today was going to both of:
    - Janmaat/Rico > Robertson
    - Cantwell > Pulisic

    B) However could also do both of:
    - Connolly > Jimenez
    - Cantwell > Pulisic

    C) Problem is, can't play 8 attackers. Could instead do the below, leaving 2.2m ITB:
    - Mount > Pulisic

I can also do (minus 0.1m):
    - Cantwell > Son
    - Mount > Pulisic
    - TAA > Robbo to achieve this, for a -4?

    Thoughts?

Alli looked more like assisting the assister today, I like Alli and he is on my radar but too soon I reckon. He might not even be nailed in that position
