Fantasy Premier League managers will have to start 2020 making another tough captaincy decision.

Liverpool host a stubborn Sheffield United side while a resurgent Everton travel to face Manchester City.

To help you make the right choice for your team, the Captain Sensible article is back once again.

We will compare the top candidates’ statistical form over the last four matches and compare them against the opposing defences they are about to do battle with.

Captain Poll

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) returns to the top of the captain poll for Gameweek 21 having earned 36.6% of the vote.

Leicester travel to face Newcastle on New Year’s Day, who have just one clean sheet at home since Gameweek 9 while Vardy himself has only blanked against Liverpool since Gameweek 6.

In distant second place is Kevin de Bruyne (£10.5m), who has accrued 13.1% of the vote.

The Belgian has been in excellent form of late, registering attacking returns in each of the last four Gameweeks, two of them ending up as double-figure hauls.

This week de Bruyne faces Everton who, despite recent improvements under Duncan Ferguson and new manager Carlo Ancelotti are still short of clean sheets on the road.

They are without one on their travels since Gameweek 1 and have conceded 19 goals in such matches this season, only Watford (20), Newcastle (21) and Aston Villa (22) have shipped more.

10.6% of the voters are backing Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) for the Gameweek 21 meeting with Sheffield United. Despite two blanks in a row, the Egyptian has been unfortunate not to have rewarded his owners recently and still has two double-digit returns since Gameweek 16.

Sadio Mané (£12.3m) is not far behind his colleague, backed by 9.1% of the voters in the poll, having returned in each of his last four starts.

Amid all the clamour for Spurs midfielders of late, Harry Kane (£11.0m) has proved the steady option recently, registering attacking returns in both of the last two Gameweeks.

That makes him the most popular of Jose Mourinho’s men going into a Gameweek 21 trip to Southampton, backed by 5.1%, while Dele Alli (£8.9m) has just 1% of the vote.

Tammy Abraham‘s (£7.8m) winning goal for Chelsea at Arsenal has put him back in the captaincy conversation to some extent.

Ahead of a trip to Brighton, who have just one clean sheet since Gameweek 8, Abraham has been backed by 4.3%, while his opposite number Neal Maupay (£5.8m) has the support of 2.9%.

Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.4m) recent resurgence has led to 2.3% selecting him as the best captaincy option for Gameweek 21 when Sheffield United come to Anfield.

Sergio Aguero (£11.7m), Marcus Rashford (£9.1m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£6.6m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Hot Topic: "Can you have four Liverpool players in your FPL team? YES!"

@MILANISTA10 shared last night a link to this team: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/7158362/event/20 There is a glitch in Free Hit chip allowing you to sign four Liverpool players. The genie is out of the bottle and it would be simply unfair to fix this bug mid-season. Happy New Year to all community members and say hello to Liverpool quartets!

Did they address the advantage the player who used it that way already got?

This glitch should remain unfixed until the end of the current season. Othewise those who have already benefited from this bug will remain treated diffrentely to the rest and that's not fair. Imagine losing your money mini league to a guy who had four LFC players in DGW. It is not our fault that system wasn't properly tested.

Just ban the cheaters. Should be blatantly obvious to anyone with a brain that you are not supposed to have 4 players from a team and doing that is exploit/cheating

Feel like I need to wildcard but wary about needing it for future double gameweeks, not that those ever work out for me with all the meticulous planning anyway

Anyone else debating to wildcard or save?

I dont like using wc on dgw. I would only use it for 5 or more significant upgrades.

It's useful to have around then though, can instantly get it remove dgw players

I’m planning mine for GW 22.

Chip strategy relatively easy apparently this year. Not sure how true.

Feel playing it now rather than doubles gives me a better chance at rising the rankings as in previous seasons the wildcard in doubles hasn’t helped me as much as I would have liked.

I'm thinking the same, I'm in a rot now and my team while looking good on paper is falling further and further behind my rivals

I have mixed results with DGW wildcards. I think I´ll save it for the last gameweek - massive rotation, usually the only time we see all bench players coming in as autosubs. Many points can be gained that week.

    2FTs and 0.4 ITB:

    Guaita
    Soyuncu Rico Kiko
    Salah KDB Alli Grealish
    Tammy Kane Vardy

    Button Cantwell Holgate Lundstram

Think it is time to get Trent in so considering the following for free:

    Kiko > Trent
    Kane > Jiménez

    Opinions appreciated!!

Yes. Sterling punt as double up with KDB could be great for next 3, before swapping again to Salah/Mane. So, selling the one with least value tied up might be on

I have Trossard/Cantwell making me sick so could upgrade one of them (probably Trossard) getting 2 mids up to 18.4m. It costs a hit so lots of risk.

I consider Cantwell/Trossard as a 2 pointer every week so it really depends how Salah does but captaincy is less of a factor until GW24. The 2 alternatives could do really well but it may be a risk too far. Part of me thinks Salah gets rested this GW to allow a similar team to GW15 with Origi and co still scoring well.

Salah was captain. Won't be captaining in next 3 and Trossard was all I could afford. Perez with hindsight would have been better.

Yeah, this. I've had an awful FPL-Xmas so the temptation is to captain Salah as he's a big differential for me. However, looking at the cold stats and facts, ShefU are a decent outfit, and a rested Vardy/Leicester against a poor Newcastle looks good.

No. If you do, what are your plans for the double/long-term?

I brought Salah in for a -4 last GW, and have him along with TAA and Mane. Double defence and one of Salah/Mane does look appealing and frees up funds but it feels a waste of a few transfers to essentially just get triple 'Pool albeit in a different set up (for those who already have TAA + Mane + Salah).

I can see the temptation and I've looked at ways of doing it, and perhaps another Salah blank may make me look at it again but I think switching out one of Mane or Salah right now seems like over-management. I took TAA out before Leicester away and got severely burnt, and this feels quite similar.

Really close. Maupay probably has the slightly better fixtures, but the DCL potential dgw in 26 might edge it in his favour.

DCL. Potter is the biggest tinkerer in PL right now, Maupay can suddenly be rotated even if he delivers well when playing. I just hope Everton don´t buy a new striker ...

Gw26 the most likely place for a dgw for the league cup finalists?

Will be an interesting mid season “break” if the league cup finalist draw their fa cup fourth round game... they’ll still have 3 games in 10-12 days!

    Pope
    TAA Tomori Kelly
    Salah KDB Alli Grealish Pulisic*
    Vardy Tammy
    Button Lundstram Rico Greenwood
    2 FTs 0.2 ITB

    A) Tomori and Pulisic -> Robertson and 4.4m mid

    B) Tomori and Pulisic -> VVD and Traoré

    C) Tomori, Pulisic and Greenwood -> Gomez, Ings / DCL and 4.4 mid (-4)

    D) Others?

Thanks to this glass of Merlot and the fixture ticker, I'll finally nailed my mini-wildcard (in my own head at least):
Cathcart + Lundstram + Salah to Pereira + Doherty + Mahrez

City, Leicester and Wolves double ups for the next three then wildcard in GW24 🙂
    Thoughts welcome

      Team would look like this:
      Pope
      Trent Doherty Periera
      KDB Mahrez Alli Richarlison
      Vardy Rashford Jimenez
      (Henderson Rico Kelly Dend)

Newcastle will probably park the bus, Vardy didn´t do much in the reverse fixture until Hayden got the red card. Also, Vardy was in great goalscoring form at the tail end of last season, one of his few blanks was vs Newcastle. Different manager now, but same defenders and GK.

My gut tells me to go Rashford (c)

I captained Vardy vs Man City in GW 18 and Jimi vs the same team in GW 19, despite them not being popular options those weeks (neither were in the poll top 10 iirc). Success in both cases - they outscored more or less all the popular picks, partly explains why I have jumped from 530k to 107k in the last three GWs.

This feels like a similar situation. Rashford only has a few percent in the poll atm. Should be quite an open game, and Arsenal defense is similar to the Man City defense. A brace plus max baps, please.

I'm on Rashford captain all week, think that game will suit him and MUN down to the ground on the counter and let's face it ARS defence are no world beaters!
Very unpopular on here though which I'm surprised by...GL

Always go with your gut - less hassle in the long run

You’ll win some & you’ll lose some, but it will be YOU who has won & lost, not someone else 🙂

Yeah. I had a string of captain fails earlier this season due to following the herd/staring too much at the poll. Promised myself to follow my gut for the rest of the season (bringing back Sterling for a hit and seeing him blank once again was the last straw) and sure enough things have really improved since then.

Can't see Newcastle completely parking the bus. They just lost to Everton and are at home, so they'll have to show some ambition. I see this game as similar to when Leicester played Brighton and Aston Villa away. I think Newcastle will see this as a game they need to get something from being at home, which bodes well for Vardy.

Same logic can be applied to Rashford/Utd, though.

True. I don´t think Vardy will blank, I´m just looking for those few extra points - with the captaincy multiplier, they can really help.
