Fantasy Premier League managers will have to start 2020 making another tough captaincy decision.

Liverpool host a stubborn Sheffield United side while a resurgent Everton travel to face Manchester City.

To help you make the right choice for your team, the Captain Sensible article is back once again.

We will compare the top candidates’ statistical form over the last four matches and compare them against the opposing defences they are about to do battle with.

Captain Poll

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) returns to the top of the captain poll for Gameweek 21 having earned 36.6% of the vote.

Leicester travel to face Newcastle on New Year’s Day, who have just one clean sheet at home since Gameweek 9 while Vardy himself has only blanked against Liverpool since Gameweek 6.

In distant second place is Kevin de Bruyne (£10.5m), who has accrued 13.1% of the vote.

The Belgian has been in excellent form of late, registering attacking returns in each of the last four Gameweeks, two of them ending up as double-figure hauls.

This week de Bruyne faces Everton who, despite recent improvements under Duncan Ferguson and new manager Carlo Ancelotti are still short of clean sheets on the road.

They are without one on their travels since Gameweek 1 and have conceded 19 goals in such matches this season, only Watford (20), Newcastle (21) and Aston Villa (22) have shipped more.

10.6% of the voters are backing Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) for the Gameweek 21 meeting with Sheffield United. Despite two blanks in a row, the Egyptian has been unfortunate not to have rewarded his owners recently and still has two double-digit returns since Gameweek 16.

Sadio Mané (£12.3m) is not far behind his colleague, backed by 9.1% of the voters in the poll, having returned in each of his last four starts.

Amid all the clamour for Spurs midfielders of late, Harry Kane (£11.0m) has proved the steady option recently, registering attacking returns in both of the last two Gameweeks.

That makes him the most popular of Jose Mourinho’s men going into a Gameweek 21 trip to Southampton, backed by 5.1%, while Dele Alli (£8.9m) has just 1% of the vote.

Tammy Abraham‘s (£7.8m) winning goal for Chelsea at Arsenal has put him back in the captaincy conversation to some extent.

Ahead of a trip to Brighton, who have just one clean sheet since Gameweek 8, Abraham has been backed by 4.3%, while his opposite number Neal Maupay (£5.8m) has the support of 2.9%.

Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.4m) recent resurgence has led to 2.3% selecting him as the best captaincy option for Gameweek 21 when Sheffield United come to Anfield.

Sergio Aguero (£11.7m), Marcus Rashford (£9.1m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£6.6m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

So Newcastle without, Dummett, Lascelles, Clark and most likely Schar against Leicester.

    Vardy blank incoming XD.

To get both Salah and Mane by GW 24 you will eventually have to drop a good midfielder, who will you drop? e.g. Alli, Maddison, Martial

I needed to drop Alli due to higher price of those three. I have Salah, Mane, Kdb, Martial and Traore. Forwards also clearly lighter with Vardy, Ings and Greenwood.

    Hi all.

I’m wild carding this game week due to a nightmare festive period. I’m .1 short to add Fabs. This will likely be a rest of season gk change. Which goalkeeper would you go with:

    A. Stay with Pope.
    B. Foster
    C. Ryan
    D. Ramsdale
    E. Swap out Jonny Evans and Simpson for Dunk and Kabasele to get Fabs. I also have TAA, Rico and Williams.

Considering the same, but Adama is built to haul vs top teams - fearing a lot of blanks in those "easy" fixtures. His distance shot goal vs Man City gives me a bit hope, though.

To improve my defence, I need to raise 0.9 by selling Tammy (SP 7.5) for Ings. It now looks like Ings will probably not rise in price tonight, so I could delay this move until next week. That would mean next week I would do Tammy+Kelly -> Ings+Sidibe for 2 FT. (Currently have 1 FT 0.1 ITB.) Chelsea have a great record against Brighton but still seem rather out of form.

    Which should I do?

    A. Sell Tammy now
    B. Play Tammy and wait until GW22 to sell

OK reflection , at the start of each FPL season I note a few basic strategies
Think based on my one good season , know they are sound strategies yet
I somehow lose sight at times , drowned by the noise I guess .
Anyone want to share their 4 or 5 strategies at the off ?
    Mine -
-Be proactive and especially early on , your pre season picks look like failures dump em fast.
-Be a little patient with known class players ie passing the eye test, they normally pay back , often just as others lose patience.
    - Stay calm , so easy to get reckless after a particularly bad GW , we all have them.
    - High TV means very little in the final furlong , take a few calculated risks
so many bargains appear , find them - success

I have been checking top 10 finishers over the last 8 or so seasons and without fail at least 6 of the 10 have very moderate TVs

    1. YuvalFPL
      • 15 Years

TV is important early on I have found, after that I think my biggest success is making my transfers late in gameweeks. and never bench trent.

This is the first time ive played properly for a few years, but i have never thought about team value. Almost always make late transfers.

I usually start without expensive defenders as clean sheets are usually rarer at the start.

        • 13 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

Yeah Beric , when I first came on FFS you were a regular

Locked & Loaded...GL for the GW all as always but especially for the first one of 2020. Happy New Year from this part of the world (an hour away here)!

    Pope
    Trent / Pereira / Doherty
    KDB / Alli / Martial / Ri(C)harlison
    Vardy / Rashford / Jimenez
    (Hendo, Rico, Lundy, Dendo)
    0.6

    Funny story about captaincy:
My wife is often lucky, so since its the first GW of the new year I decided I'd ask her to choose my captain (10 mins ago). I asked her to pick a number between 2 and 11. She chose 8. I said it can't be 8 (Richarlison), choose another number! She said 'but I've a feeling for 8'.
I said 'ok, I tell you what, I will list 10 players by name in random order and if you chose him again I'll captain him'....
She bloody went and chose Richarlison by name aswell as by number without having a clue about my team, spooky! (true story)
    Happy New Year Folks 🙂

Is it mad to not captain Vardy this week with his rest, his form and the fact newcastle are missing defenders? Who are the other captain options and surely they all have a doubt of rotation risk too?

      Mane/Salah or KDB

This is not the week to take a risk with captaincy imo. Vardy's EO will be very high.

I'm captaining Vardy, but if I were willing to take a risk on a differential captain, I would go with a United player against Arsenal.

Need some ideas, 4.7m itb with 2FT's:

    Guaita
    Rico, Chilwell, Robertson, Targett
    Mane, De Bruyne, James, Alli,
    Vardy, Ings

    Button, Greenwood, Dendoncker, Lundstram

Targett needs to go but unsure who to replace with, was also thinking Alli to Salah to get in early for the DGW.

If you get Sidibe do you still have enough money for Alli to Salah later? If not then Holgate is a cheaper way into Everton.

Looks good. Not sure how much you paid for Kelly (you may not have many other options) but he could lose his place when Ward is back. Would prefer not to keep on WC.

Take it from me, doubling up on pool mids doesn’t work. I’d upgrade defence and be a bit wiser on WC
