Sheffield Utd 0-1 Manchester City

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£11.9m)
  • Assists: Kevin de Bruyne (£10.7m)
  • Penalty misses: Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m)
  • Penalty saves: Dean Henderson (£4.9m)
  • Bonus Points: Henderson x3, Nicolas Otamendi x3 (£5.0m), de Bruyne x1

Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) continued to pester Fantasy Premier League managers not in possession of him by extending his scoring run at Sheffield United.

His ever-increasing ownership, now at 19.5%, were initially left frustrated to see Pep Guardiola name him on the bench but, such is the Argentinian’s form right now, he didn’t let that get in the way of further attacking returns.

All Aguero needed was 23 minutes on the pitch at Bramall Lane to find the net, latching onto the end of a trademark Kevin de Bruyne (£10.7m) cross.

“He is on fire right now. Strikers need momentum and I feel he has it. Three goals before, two goals the other day and he scored today.” – Pep Guardiola

It means Aguero has now scored in each of his last four Premier League matches, his total of seven since Gameweek 20 the most of any top-flight forward at the time of writing.

Even though Aguero finished his latest game with just four points to his name, courtesy of a yellow card, there are still plenty of encouragements for his owners moving forward.

These are mainly connected with Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) who had an evening to forget at Bramall Lane.

It was the Brazilian who came in for Aguero, joined in the front-three by Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), but for the first hour or so, Manchester City were decidedly flat in attack.

Pep Guardiola had tried to match Sheffield United’s system, to some extent, playing Fernandinho (£5.2m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.0m) and the returning Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) in a back-three. However, this decision, reportedly taken to protect Laporte, did not bring the best out in Manchester City.

“Yeah (Laporte is okay). He could not play 90 minutes, especially here. That’s why we play with five at the back to protect him. He is an important player for us and we missed him a lot.” – Pep Guardiola

Sheffield United, who have defended admirably this season, were equal to most of what was thrown at them initially.

They did concede a penalty when Mahrez was brought down in the box after 35 minutes, but Dean Henderson (£4.9m) stepped up to save Jesus’ effort.

It is this miss that summed up his night, to the point that Pep Guardiola even admitted after the game that he may have to review the penalty situation at Manchester City.

“I have to reflect on (the penalty situation). I always give confidence to the players to take it but maybe I have to take the decision which guy is going to take it – not for Gabriel today because Sergio and Raheem have missed too but we are not safe. In the knockout stages, it’s so important because these kind of details make the difference most of the time. We have to reflect on it. I have to make the decision [on] the guy who will take the penalty. Ederson is the best. Believe me, he’s the best taker we have in penalties. Eddy has no blood in his veins, he’s so calm so he could do it.” – Pep Guardiola

Crucially, Manchester City took on a new lease of life once Aguero took to the pitch. With the team having previously playing quite static prior to the change, there was considerably better and more insightful movement afterwards.

While Aguero’s goals will have gone a long way to re-establishing himself as the in-form centre-forward, his owners may be boosted even more by Tuesday’s performance from Jesus.

As for de Bruyne, he continues to tick over with points, despite the decreased interest in his services for the Double Gameweek.

The Belgian was sold by over 200,000 managers in the fallout of Gameweek 23, only Marcus Rashford (£9.1m), Jamie Vardy (£10.0m), Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and Richarlison (£8.1m) moved on by more.

In the end, de Bruyne ended up with a seven-point score, adjusted down from nine when he was initially awarded maximum bonus at full-time, which probably suited all parties given the context of the Double Gameweek.

Those who held onto the Belgian will certainly be content with another return, while those who sold him for Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) or Sadio Mané (£12.4m) may already be confident their new Liverpool midfielder can eclipse seven points across two matches.

Either way, a trip to Spurs in Gameweek 25 will hardly put off investment in Manchester City players, be it Aguero or de Bruyne, considering their defensive record since Mourinho’s arrival. After that, Manchester City host West Ham in Gameweek 26 so the short-term fixtures are still positive for de Bruyne and his colleagues.

Meanwhile, those in possession of Mahrez continue to experience nothing but bad luck. He was arguably the best player on the pitch for Manchester City against Sheffield United but left Bramall Lane with no Fantasy returns.

It was the Algerian who was fouled for the first-half penalty and he would have earned an assist had Jesus been able to put it away.

Finally, even though Laporte was back and Manchester City kept a much-needed clean sheet, there were still a few opportunities for Sheffield United.

John Fleck (£5.0m), who has been in fine form recently, was nearly played in during the first-half while Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) spurned a chance in the second period.

Also, Fantasy managers should take note of the fact that John Lundstram (£5.1m), as some suspected, did drop out of the team.

He was replaced by Muhamed Bešić (£4.4m) but came on for the final 12 minutes.

Whether this leaves Lundstram in a dangerous position of losing his place regularly remains to be seen. He has played a lot of football this season and it has taken some time for the competition to catch up with him. At the very least, it’s a situation for Fantasy managers to monitor.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham (Robinson 78′); Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Bešić (Lundstram 78′), Baldock; Sharp (Mousset 59′), McBurnie.

Manchester City XI (3-4-3): Ederson; Laporte (Garcia 78′), Otamendi, Fernandinho; Zinchenko, Rodri, De Bruyne, Walker; Sterling (B Silva 90+2′), Jesus (Aguero 67′), Mahrez.

Is it too late to bring in Aguero?

Owners who captained for Villa + Palace are laughing all the way to massive green arrows, but last night showed once again that we can't guess Pep's lineups.

He did however come on and show that he's often the one who will get City the result they need.

With a price tag of £11.9m and Spurs (a), West Ham (h), Leicester (a), Arsenal (h), Man United (a) is it time to jump on?

Or is it a case of applauding those that jumped on a couple of weeks ago and leaving them to it?

Too much risk with his pricetag ending up on the bench. Pep is on a rotation spree at the moment.

I got in Marhez on WC and had a cameo from him. Getting rid. Only viable options from City are KDB, Laporte and Ederson. Do not think Pep can afford to bench any of these 3 when fit.

        Agree with this.

I've had him for last 5 game weeks and got lucky with Cantwell in for 10 points the week he didn't play at all.

If you want guaranteed 90 minutes, get somebody else. If you want goals then just bring him in and then reassess at Champions League time.

Had half considered a simple Vardy to Lacazette transfer a few weeks ago. However it seems that Arteta is replicating the Liverpool system with Lacazette dropping deep in the Firmino role and Auba/Martinellii/Pepe pushing beyond like Mane/Salah.

Plus I own Sarr, Abraham, Kelly and Lundstram so I've been somewhat overtaken by events there...and previously owned Fabianski too so that was another transfer I didn't want to have to make! Not enough FT's.....

Best thing for Auba FPL returns would be for Arteta to drop Laca to the bench.

Martinelli on the left, Pepe on the right, Auba in the centre. Much quicker, mobile and direct front 3. Auba would flourish imho.

I was one of the lucky ones who had him and captained him for those games resulting in rank jump of 1.8m > 500k.

But took him out to fund salah this week as felt he was due a rotation. If rotation wasn't there he would be absolutely fixture proof, but currently i think its ok to leave him a few weeks and see what happens with rotation once champs league comes back into play.

If he's getting all the prem games then time to jump back on.

Have him and Mahrez for two GWs now after changing my mind on going without City assets altogether! This was due to last minute injuries to my wildcard team (mainly Richarlison and Rashford).
Now I've no idea if I'm going to hold them and/or for how long (their fixture congestion is a real thing)!
All I know is that Mahrez is my ultimate troll this season (closely followed by Pulisic), I've owned him for five GWs this season resulting in, 1,0,0,1,3, 1pt per GW average 🙁

People risked it and got their reward, congrats!
But Im not buying him, its too risky imo esp for that price and too risky for C option too. Jesus plays a lot now and Mahrez has nice form. Also dont forget Sterling. Too many good picks there so big rotation is natural in City team which is not good for FPL.
Once you get points and another 1pt cameo which at that price I dont like as I can have nailed Mane or Salah for example esp comparing callendar for City an Pool atm.

Its not too late but I don't think there's much point. He doesn't face defences as obliging as Villa and Palace again for some time, with the exception of GW26. So the fixtures don't look very appetising to me. Furthermore, over the same stretch Liverpool have a marvellous run of fixtures, so most will be captaining their players who also have a fraction of the rotation risk. So to carry a 11.9m asset who you won't captain, in the most rotation heavy team in the league, through their worst run of fixtures of the season, seems like a complete waste of money. If you have a mega team value then a move to him from Rashford or Vardy may work, but for the vast majority ripping teams up to get him in seems daft, especially when we have cheap players like Lundstram and Kelly potentially losing their place, which needs sorting out, or injuries like Abraham etc.

With Pool's amazing fixtures between GW25-30 and Aguero's rotation threat mixed with tough fixtures you will never captain him.

I just don't think it's worth adding another 12m player when I'm mostly going to be capping Salah or Mane.

I think that's where my thinking ultimately lies.

Trying to look for the next Aguero.

Have my eyes on Aubameyang in GW25 but not sure it will be quite as profitable as Aguero was, especially when as you say Liverpool will be highly captained and for good reason.

Kun is by far and away the best player in the EPL. His inclusion in your team guarantees points imo, even if from the bench.

tot - poor back line, leaking goals
      WHU - it's West Ham
      lei - leaking goals
      ARS - leaking goals
      man u - it's a derby! anything can happen.

From experience, you want the best players in your team.

I had him the past two GWs. He is still the best choice imo, it was obvious he would get rotated yesterday. He will get more minutes going forward and is on a different level than Jesus. I can't see any other consistent choice upfront no matter the money. A true legend. Leicester looks out of form, and will probably drop to the 5th-6th position. Rash is out, Ings lost form but is still valuable like DCL. Maybe Auba would be a good choice but Arsenal is far from the team it once was. Tottenham can't perform on either side of the pitch. I would buy. Otherwise i'd go Wilson (BOU is a mid-table team massively underperforming).

I'd imagine this topic gets a lot more attention now with the Vardy injury.

Both Aguero and Aubameyang are likely to have a blank gameweek 28, assuming Man. City progress in the Carabao cup.

So essentially its a 3 week punt if you're going to get either. Man. City play Man. Utd midweek before their next FPL fixture against Spurs, Pep's lineup should give us some clue about Aguero's probability of starting that game. After that there are no midweek fixtures before their games in GW26 and GW 27.

The problem is lack of reliable alternatives around Vardy's price point. Lacazette isn't getting points despite getting starts

He is playing where he usually plays at. He played in a more advanced role in a few games recently when D. Silva was injured but he doesn't always play in that role.

If it was any other player, he wouldn't be worth it, but KDB can still get a lot of assists and bonus even when playing deeper so I'd keep.

Aguero is a great choice but only for short punts. He'll always miss games as long as Jesus is also fit.

Haha I was thinking about this and its probably driving Pep mad. For such a gifted team they are dreadful at penalties. Ederson seems to be the most gifted at them from Peps comments, but I don't think he will ever do it as the man is a complete control freak, and your goalkeeper being stranded upfield if he misses a pen and the opposition break is the ultimate loss of control.

Remmber his first season.. I owned him and Pep said he can play in midfield and would be great. League was won quite early. But pep never played him in MID.

Keep Maupay (whu, WAT) for 1-2 games.

Try and generate cash to upgrade him to Ings in GW26 or Jimenez in GW27.

      I'm torn between...
      1. Soy to Stevens or...
      2. Soy/Vardy to auba/Lascelles (-4).
In your position I'd definitely consider a three move special if Vardy fails again.

Also - can you post something about how you rate the nailedness and quality of the Newcastle defenders? I'm not alone in wanting to tap your know how. All five cb's are fit... Then there's Ritchie. Very confusing!

The waters were muddied even further last night with Lejeune and Schar doing excellent when coming on. Ritchie is nailed as can be and has set pieces/pens unless Bentaleb takes them off him. Lascelles is probably the most nailed as captain and the bigger stronger guy out of the 5 CBs (but also the least inspiring FPL wise imo). Fernandez seems very nailed and has a good goal threat. Clark could be at threat now with Lejeune doing so well last night. Schar is probably our best defender but is out of form. Personally I’d play Schar DCM in some games.

I’d I had to pick one now I’d go Fernandez (unless you can stretch to Ritchie).

    Consider the wildcard
    Heres the current:

    Alison Krul
    Trent(c) Soy Kelly Maitland-Niles Lund
    KDB Mane Maddison Traore Richarlison
    Vardy Abraham Martinelli
    Lund

    The Auba option:
    Ryan Hendo
    Dunk Trent Stephens Soy Lund
    Salah KDB Mane Traoure Cantwell
    Auba Ayew Martinelli

    The Aguero option:
    Ryan Pope
    Dunk Trent Stephens Soy Lund
    Salah KDB Mane Traoure DLuiz
    Aguero Ayew Martinelli

Tried to get a half decent team with Salah, Mane, KDB and one premium striker.

    A. Stick
    B. Auba team
    C. Aguero team

or any other suggestions? 1FT and 0.0

I have Hendo and now considering to get Baldock as double def. Had Lundy earlier, sold him few gw ago. He is in rotation danger imo.
