First-choice centre-back Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) is missing for Aston Villa as they host Spurs in their Gameweek 26 fixture.

The former Bournemouth man, who reportedly has tonsilitis, has been a key member of Dean Smith’s defence this season so his absence could mean good things for Spurs attackers.

“(Mings) is a massive presence in the dressing room. I hope his tonsils are feeling better. We have some good players waiting to step in who can do a job. We have complete faith in Kortney and Bjorn.” – John McGinn, on Sky Sports

The Villa manager has retained faith with the 3-4-3 system though, choosing Kortney Hause (£4.4m), Bjorn Engels (£4.4m) and Ezri Konsa (£4.3m) in the three-man defence.

Matt Targett (£4.4m) and Frédéric Guilbert (£4.4m) are the wing-backs while Jack Grealish (£6.7m) and Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) flank Mbwana Samatta (£6.0m) in the front-three.

Meanwhile, Son Heung-min (£10.0m) looks set for a central role again as Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) takes up a left attacking midfield spot.

Ben Davies (£5.3m) is back in the Spurs side for the first time since November, which means Japhet Tanganga (£4.1m) drops to the bench.

Aston Villa XI: Reina; Hause, Engels, Konsa; Targett, D Luiz, Drinkwater, Guilbert; Grealish, Samatta, El Ghazi.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris; B Davies, D Sánchez, Alderweireld, Aurier; Dier, Winks; Bergwijn, Alli, Moura; Son.

Price points were regularly talked about by RuthyNZ and he is an FPL genius.
I dont even know what an FPL price point is. Maybe something to do with swords and shields. Or triple liverpool defence. Or Xstats.

Wasn't Triggerlips a bigger advocate than Ruth_NZ of Price Points, or at least of recommending how much of our budget ought to be spent on each of the four positional categories?
And of course Joe keeps mentioning them too.
Nothing to do with swords, shields, triple Liverpool defence, xstats, coverage or effective ownership.

I never think of them I just go for the players I think will score points. There has been many a time where I had to take hits to change team structure. So maybe I should start thinking of it more.

They do it for “flexibility” to “hop on the next bandwagon”

Whilst it simultaneously rules out players not in that price point

      A classic FPL fallacy

It makes all players accessible within one/ two moves ... keeps hits to a minimum. Also means you don’t have to rule out any player as can just switch price points between positions or tailor them to the player price you want. I take about 5-7 hits a year only through this method.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years

I’d venture your current setup isn’t really a classic price-point based one though Joe (quite wisely I might add 🙂 )

You have an overload of expensive midfielders and an underload of expensive strikers/defenders for example

I’d see price point management more as having a premium/midprice/cheap player in every position - which really causes problems when (as often happens) we get an overload of overperforming players in one price point (e.g. cheap strikers), and an underload (e.g. midprice midfielder’s) in another etc

I have tailored it. So for eg one of those expensive mids can be downgraded to upgrade a striker or defender.

For price points to work there needs to be flexibility. With salah/mane, KDB and son I think it’s worth spending more in midfield, but that may not the case in a few weeks. Price points make it easy to be flexible quickly if w change is needed.

Lots of others get confused by it too.

Key is getting any player within two moves. Easy to understand then. 🙂

The switch from double pool defence to Triple back in GW21 has exceeded even my expectations

(If my maths are right it’s been 18 cleansheets, 2 assists, 1 goal, a pile of baps.... for a total of 150 points in those 6 weeks including TAA Captain in the DGW - bonkers)

                    Son (c) today was beautiful

Painful for 93 minutes, but beautiful in the end 🙂

It's a good idea for flexibility ahead of GW 1, but now that we've established that having 3-4 cheap defenders and 2-3 premium midfielders is the way to go, it's not worth it. The mid-price strikers and midfielders (bar Grealish/Jimenez) simply aren't delivering, so that price point is largely dead.

I went from ~47k to ~3k in six gameweeks with a structure that some would consider 'imbalanced'.

It would be good to see over a number of seasons and among lots of managers how well the imbalanced approach compares with the balanced approach.

I suspect an imbalanced approach will get some brilliant seasons but also some awful ones.

Whereas a balanced approach would rarely finish outside the top 100k or so and get a fair few high seasons.

Would be good if anyone has some figures on that.

For the majority of my six seasons so far (including this one) I haven't actively tried to find balance in terms of price points; I've ended up in the top 3035 three times and outside the top 200k three times. t's volatile but fun!

I think it is abdolutely impossible to calculate it. We cannot tell from a team who are the players on the watchlist. Using mini wc or two free transfers sometimes in combination with price points is a mixed strategy.

Early in the season it is very useful if you have a lot of interesting targets in same price bracket. Also later in the season, but for those who have for example Jimenez and Ings, that 3rd spot is difficult from price point of view. There aren't many good options in any price bracket.

My ml leader had a very imbalanced Team when he used the first wildcard (Sterling Salah Mané and KDB) and he went from 11 to 1st of the league and now he is 42k

I have a feeling those who are organised and want to limit hits are the ones most likely to worry about price points.

More aggressive players target plum fixtures and can therefore take more hits and change their team structure with more ease by doing so.

I usually start by just selecting the squad of players that I expect to score the most points, irrespective of any price points.

But that was a problem this season because I started with too many elite defenders and too little spent on my midfield and forward line. That would have worked out really well last season, but this season it proved to be disastrous.

I also played my first wildcard too early and still got my squad structure wrong - it wasn't till GW10, by which time I had plummeted to 3 million, that I managed to get it right and start to climb back up the rankings.

So this season I would probably have started better if I'd paid more attention to price points.

They may not be essential, but there are some strong arguments in their favour. There are other ways to play though, such as being prepared to take more well-judged hits.

Does this WC team look too unbalanced or worth considering? (That is if Nketiah plays well and looks good for a first sub in a 3-5-2 formation)

    Ryan/ McCarthy
    TAA/ Boly/ Digne/ Fernandez/ Tanganga
    Mane/ Salah/ KDB/ Son/ Traore
    Ings/ DCL/ Nketiah

Aye it does looks that way, but he'd be last sub anyway and for 4 mill I dont see many other alternatives

Any pressing reason for wildcard this week?

Not majorly no, my current team is

        Ryan/ Button
        TAA/ Digne/ Boly/ Kelly/ Tanganga
        Salah/ Martial/ KDB/ Traore/ Cantwell
        Vardy/ Firmino/ Ings

No major fires to put out however theres a few players I want to transfer out and I'm weighing up what a WC could look like

I am sure you will be well inside the top 10k by the end of the season regardless of Aguero. Lots of doubles etc to come yet.
