Joshua Bull has been crowned the 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League champion, with former world number one Aleksandar Antonov stripped of his title.

Almost a year to the day since Gameweek 1 got underway and a fortnight after the season had ended, there was one final plot twist to a chaotic campaign on Tuesday afternoon.

FPL issued a brief statement to say that, after end-of-season checks, “the team formerly occupying the no. 1 position has been removed from FPL due to a breach of our terms”.

The article in which the announcement was made didn’t elaborate on what those breaches were but the erstwhile winner was notified of the decision via email, with his team removed from FPL.

Quite honestly, we don’t know the exact reasons either, so we won’t be adding to the speculation elsewhere.

Joshua moved up to first place as a result of these latest developments, with Chris McGowan – aka site user Queens of the South Age – promoted to runner-up.

Chris was also elevated to winner of our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league as a consequence.

Joshua, who had never previously finished inside the top one million, played his Wildcard in Gameweek 38+, having used his Free Hit chip a week earlier.

He had first entered the top 1,000 in Gameweek 17 and had reached the top ten shortly before lockdown, rising to seventh in Gameweek 29.

Hitting top spot in Gameweek 32+, he had dropped down to second heading into the final Gameweek and looked to have finished there before today’s statement was issued.

Nick Pope, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne never left his squad all season, while Mohamed Salah was only sold for one week.

I have just heard on the local news that sufficient funds have been raised for a statue of Plymouth Argyle legend Jake Leslie to be built and erected. For those who don't know he was selected for England in 1925, but didn't play due to his ethnicity.

As someone who lived and worked in Plymouth for 18 years, I'm delighted to know this.

Ironically, although I lived 5 minutes from Home Park, after my first year living there, I ceased to follow Argyle - due to the fans' racism. It was the year Argyle got to the FA Cup semi-final versus Watford and I traveled up to Villa Park with the fans. All through the game the guys surrounding me were throwing bananas at John Barnes and making monkey noises. I was actually pleased when Barnes laid on the cross for the Watford goal that won the game. I was cold towards the club after that despite, as a teacher, regularly finding players' kids in my classroom!

I was there in 1984 as well and didn't notice that, I think I know which part of Home Park those fans use to frequent however. I do remember being showered with coins whilst standing in the Spion Kop thrown by Derby fans in the round before, I picked up about £50 quids worth of 50p coins, but pocked them rather than throwing them back.

Guess I drew the short straw there. Never thought of invading the pitch to collect the bananas, to be fair.

Much needed after today. It makes you think about who people really are. We only ever know each other behind computer screens.

A timely reminder for us all to evaluate our circle of friends etc. We all have a part to play.

Despite his terrible reaction to the racist incident, I hope Alexsander comes out of this as a better person and understands that any form of racism is wrong.

Indeed - the first reaction is almost understandable I'd say. "I know I'm not racist - I don't actually hate black people" and then double down on it and be defensive about it. It's human nature - the majority of racist comments don't come from white supremacist types (although those exist too, sadly) who actively think black people are inferior.

You then have a choice to make - you can either educate yourself on exactly how racism can come in many different guises and change your attitudes, or keep digging essentially.

One of the reasons many of us are in favour of the deadline changing is the sense that FPL has fallen out of touch with the realities of our social media world. With everything so leakable and sharable these days the deadline format as it stands is now jarringly dated.

Whereas one could look at the decision to strip the title as an example of FPL actually coming to grips with the reality of the world around us. In truth everything you write (even in private conversations) is now extremely shareable. With FPL becoming more and more high profile (to the point where this story has popped up in national papers), more and more people playing the game and more and more people becoming aware of the impact exposing people can have, it was probably inevitable that something like this would eventually occur. Whether involving an FPL winner, FPL show contributer or whatever. This dynamic is present everywhere else online, so eventually it was going to arise within the FPL community.

I'm not sure it would be viable for them to ignore that sort of information when presented to them, as a decision to do so is itself extremely shareable and has the potential to damage their image. Particularly as it feeds into a larger conversation about racism in football (a point highlighted by the fact that Raheem Sterling was yet again the target in this instance) and the broader conversation around racism that has arisen in the wake of the George Flloyd killing.

In fact given that he will be allowed to continue playing FPL, one could argue that their decision was actually quite measured. Fans who say similar things in stadiums face potential lifetime bans.

If nothing else this might be a learning point for some, both in terms of exactly how private (or not) their conversations are and how little intent to cause offense (i.e. "I would never actually say that to the player") matters when expressing racist sentiments.

I'm sure people are quickly sick of talking about all this but it makes for an interesting conversation within the FPL community, I think.

lmao good point, well we know what the question was now.

Thing is though, that question was formatted in such a weird way. Everyone knows that "if so and so is the answer what is the question" it means the subject of the question is rubbish. It absolutely invited a pile-on and that's what they got. It was really stupid of them. I hate their Facebook and Twitter pages.

No I'm not saying it did. Think they could have chosen another name Andy - especially when they asked such a dubious question that could and I presume did get some "ill-conceived" answers. That's all.

          Another name - same idiocy.

          De Bruyne - ginger jibes
          Bruno - ABU poison
          Salah - anti-Islamic comments.
Should all black footballers' faces be hidden because racism exists? I think there is a danger of being too precious about this.

I think it's very important part you suggested.
Causal racism is what the main issue IMHO. We never know when we cross the line !

It's not possible to remove it completely. But what i can do is to not hurt others based on their colour/religion/size. Maybe that's a good start. I said it previously it is way more than comments ir anything else. It's a part of upbringing.

Awareness about how someone can get seriously hurt mentally if you make fun of him is what needed not punishment exactly. Empathy ....

Oh yeah I remember. On Facebook everyone just piled on Sterling for being a cheat and overrated. I really hate social media. People thinking that their worthless, over negative opinions are of interest to anyone except themselves. And they were all saying the same thing anyway. I guess at least none of what I saw was racist, but if that's the silver lining then that just tells you about the absolute state of these platforms and the voices they enable. Shut the lot down, I say.

That video is embarrassing, should have just admitted his mistake and apologised. It’s a weird one because on one hand he is totally wrong and his comments are indefensible. But then when did FPL turn into the police? If next season my mini league leader posts something racist, can I get them banned? Is it just racism they issue bans for? What about homophobic comments, transphobic etc. Would the EPL have let Suarez have a medal if Liverpool won the Premier League that season?
I wonder where they draw the line after this.

Here is the evidence, I hope you take appropriate action against this. If you dont, your knowledge and condoning? of it will be released to the media.
Thats how someone would do it, with no further contact.

Thinking of setting up 4-5-1 with triple Liverpool defence. Has anyone strayed on a 4-5-1 and stuck with it? Anyone got any good/bad experiences?

Also I don’t watch Bundesliga, and don’t usually punt on newbies for GW1, but how good is Werner and would he be worth a punt at 9.5/10.0?

Yeh, I'll have the triple Reds defence, and I use it quite a bit. I don't stick rigidly to one formation, but with my intended structure I'll be using it along with 3-5-2, 4-4-2, but with most of my budget in defence and midfield, two of my budget strikers will often be benched.

Fixed: GK, 3 DEFS, 4 MIDS, 1 FWD.

That leaves 5 budget players - 2x4.5 defenders, a 4.5 midfielder and 2 budget playing strikers (maybe 5.5 and 5m).
From those 5, each GW 2 play, 3 on the bench. I will have planned who they are based on 6-week blocks of fixtures. Most of my transfer activity will be focused on these guys. I think it'll work okay.

The issue with 4-5-1 is that there's not normally a £4.5 budget striker and so if your one playing striker gets rested then you don't get anyone off the bench

I think the 8-9m range could be interesting. I think it was two or three seasons ago that Vardy and Forming (both around 9m) we're really good shouts for PPM and I think we could be in for something similar. I could see Martial being good, and maybe Vardy again if he doesn't get too much of an increase. Maybe Richarlison at a 7.5 ish range

Maybe they should ask for a CRB/DBS check.

Or you could just applaud FPL/EPL on an excellent decision that shows racist behaviour has consequences.

I don't disagree with the decision, but they should make the T&Cs clearer.

It's a fair question, anyway, what are the rules around your behaviour outside FPL. I didn't know there were any.

Don't be a racist is a general rule for life, not just FPL. And the more places you get pulled up for racist behaviour the better.

tbh I'm a little suspicious of anyone who's reaction isn't all out support for this decision.

Right, but another general rule for life is don't commit crimes.

So is a convicted criminal allowed to play fpl?

Agreed. I spent a couple of months in jail a few years ago. If i hypothetically win fpl and someone reports this to them and i end up losing out on the prizes id be devestated. Wouldnt have bothered playing if it was in the T&Cs

It's the official Premier League fantasy game. If the FPL took no action and the person who sent them the evidence then went to the press and said "look I sent the Premier League evidence that the fantast footy winner made a racist comment about a Premier League footballer" and they just ignored it what do you think would happen? Exactly a whole ton of sh@t would be unleashed on the Premier League, they had no option than to take action.

So was the action taken because it was racism or because the guy won FPL? If I report a player from 7.2m OR will reaction be the same?

I don't know what they will do in the very unlikely scenario you have outlined. I'm just pointing out why they felt they had no option other than to throw the winner out.

They must know, whoever sent the evidence to FPL woulda sent it to them as well. They'd probably want to deny him 50k more then the FPL win, you'd expect.

Its not like its someone 2nd or 3rd in FPL wanting to benefit directly from it, its someone he thought was a friend and has a grudge.

Yes and it would be perfectly valid to discuss those questions if they didnt ban him. What's your point exactly, why is it bad to discuss where the line is drawn?

What creates more discussion on a forum?

      1. "Its great that FPL banned the racist"

      2. "Now that its established that racism is reason for FPL disqualification, where will/should the FPL draw the line with regards to criminal behavior and/or controversial freedom of speech topics that could or could not be deemed 'hateful speech' "

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        6 years, 17 days ago

          • 15 Years

Yes, and people never start such "discussions" by giving their own views on where the line should be drawn, but instead leave it as a set of questions. A bit suspect.

            • 12 Years

Probably because its a wasp's nest to even get into the discussion now that a precedent has been set that hateful statements can lead to a ban.

If I hypothetically said "I think the line should definitely be drawn before racism and homophobia, but it should be allowed to make critical remarks about the transsexual movement" I would be in the firing line in the future if FPL decided that trans people should have 100% support and anything else is hateful rhetoric.

The term 'downplaying racism' is the thing. If you're downplaying what can be widely and reasonably considered to be obvious racism, that's bad, and possibly racist. If it's less obvious, there mustn't be severe admonishment for the person "downplaying" what they see as something that's not necessarily racist. We should avoid succumbing to groupthink.

Very interesting that FPL didn't make a point of explaining the reason they did it was due to racist comments. Given all the effort put into showing support for BLM you would have thought they would have used the opportunity to make their reasons clear. There is are many legal and moral issues wrapped up in this situation, and I imaging the FPL lawyers have spent considerable time formulating a legal basis for the action they've taken (which is probably a contributing factor to the amount of time its taken them to announce this).

They will now be bound, I imagine, to make clear what constitutes unacceptable private comments. Is it as simple a white/black racism, or does it extend to insulting remarks about other teams, or Brits slagging off Scots (or vice versa)? What about other forms of potentially offensive comments?

Item 2 of the FPL T's&C's is their trump card:
        2. For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions in respect of the Game (including conditions of application or Registration, team or league names, deadlines within the Game, winners of Prizes or the Game Rules (as defined below)), shall be at the Premier League's absolute discretion. All such decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

He was last season, he's free to go for next season so he's not racist anymore.

Only for a of season 😉

I hope they stay really, at least three clubs I can think of which would be better to go down. At the end of the day, the table won’t lie 🙂 ... unless goalline technology goes wrong again...

I find it quite alarming that nothing has been said about the link I posted where Evra was being racist towards Hasselbaink and other Chelsea players in a video which was probably seen by every football fan, The FA, UEFA, FIFA and the world.

    So my question is this.

Is there not racism in all walks of live irrespective of your race?

Nothing happenned to Evra about that video.

Times move on - thankfully. It's been quite a year.

Yeah racism is everywhere no question. Good comment somewhere above about needing to be proactively anti-racist and not just not racist.

If you're seriously asking why people aren't reacting as vehemently towards a black man saying the N-word as they have towards a white guy doing so, I might point you in the direction of a few hundred years of social and historical context.

Unless this is a joke that went over my head, in which case well done.
