Fantasy Premier League managers will have to entirely re-think how best to invest in Manchester United’s attack for the 2020/21 season.

The game-makers at FPL Towers have wielded their position-changing axe and reclassified no fewer than three key Red Devil assets for the new campaign.

Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) have been converted into midfielders to reflect their roles on the flanks of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking midfield trio, while Anthony Martial (£9.0m) has moved into the forwards bracket.

Fernandes haul raises the bar for top 10k's most popular captain Salah

These changes are sure to impact squad selection for the new season, but could also affect the appeal of Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) who has remained a midfielder.

To fully assess which of the Manchester United attackers appeal the most for 2020/21, we have pulled out some key statistics from Project Restart, the only time that Fernandes, Rashford, Greenwood and Martial started matches consistently at the same time.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Which United attacker was in the penalty box most often?

    I think this is it:

    McCarthy / Ryan
TAA, Doherty, Gomez / Pieters, 4.0
    Salah, KDB, Ziyech, Greenwood, Soucek
    Jiménez, Wood / 4.5

Looks decent on paper, I prefer Antonio to Wood and not sure on Ziyech yet but fixtures could change all of that thinking

From what I've learnt so far, "outside of" is almost always asking for trouble

But yeah, either of the Leicester 4.5m fullbacks could make that list

My 10th of many many drafts... Got a bit more depth in this one, a 4-4-2/4-5-1 hybrid

    Ryan
    TAA, Robbo, Doherty, Ayling
    Salah, De Bruyne, Rashford, Ziyech
    Mitrovic, Bamford

    Bench: Button, Soucek, Vinagre, Davis

Ayling/Vinagr and Bamford/Soucek could rotate dependent on fixtures. Guess I'd have Son instead of Rash for GW1 in this setup

Re: "One striker with fodder bench is a dangerous formation because your striker might get injured after the deadline and you'll have no playing sub to come in":

This is a quick poll for those who see this, not an argument. How many times has this ACTUALLY happened to you while playing FPL? Not just when you had a lone striker and he couldn't play with no bench. I mean, how many times can you recall having any nailed striker miss out of your GW XI due to an unknown injury which only came out after the deadline?

It's nigh impossible to get stats for this, so I'm crowdsourcing

      pretty slim, people over-rate benches.
You can have a decent bench if you plan on rotatiosn etc, but if you're not planning that then you dont need anything fancy. I've only been caught it like three times in three seasons of having no playing sub, and that was due to a non playing bench

Thank you. I've only played two seasons, so I feel my exposure might be limited here... But I just haven't seen it happen more than twice a season. Still, there has to be a reason it's feared so much

        1. MosF94
          • 7 Years

I think it depends who your one striker is, and whether they're fully nailed or prone to the occasional rotation. I might be a bit worried if I had Che Adams as my lone frontman, but less so if I had Jimenez there.

Having said this, I do remember Vardy missing one game when I'd captained him last season, and I think that was an undisclosed injury? I had a backup striker, so it was fine, but I'd say it's semi-likely to happen to most strikers (or any player) that they miss a game completely without the slightest warning. Still, it's rare enough that it shouldn't be a huge worry

          1. FPL Theorist
            • 6 Years
            5 years, 11 months ago

Yes, around Christmas Vardy missed the one game for the baby and the next game for an injury. That was the example that came to mind.

I think Ze_Austin is right, though -- we tend to over-insure against rare but very negative events in FPL. Players like Magnus Carlsen tended to have just as much bench as they needed, and no more than that. Whereas I usually had more "insurance" than I could use, especially during the 5-subs period.

You'd be surprised that this has happened fewer times in your team than a red card, pen miss or other sources -ve points (not just 0), but you won't avoid Jimenez just because he might miss a pen one day

    2. Pinturicchio10
      5 years, 11 months ago

Cant remember exact plauersbor what season but it's happened quite a few times down the years. Unexpected benchings, injuries, randomly not in the squad etc. Its rare wnoigh hit does happen. Anyway, who's playing a one striker system? Terrible idea.

      2. Ze_Austin

The thing about biases is that it takes just three events in 5 seasons for you to feel there's a high chance that it might happen

That's the effect of a shock. Something that occurs so rarely, you fear it can happen any time due to the few times it happens... Affecting your plans for the 90+% of the time that it *wouldn't* happen. This is what led to my starting with more strikers than I needed last season, and it didn't happen to me once throughout the season anyway

Also note that a nailed striker who's benched (very rare for Vardy, Kane, Jimenez, Mitrovic, Ayew, etc) will still most likely come on for 1 point, so your bench wouldn't help there. The scenario I'm referring to is when an injury comes post-deadline

And a lone striker system allows for Robbo, who's likely to outscore any striker cheaper than him

        1. Pinturicchio10
          5 years, 11 months ago

Yeah it's not something I'd be overly concerned about to be honest but ish happens from time to time. In this particular scenario, with a single forward, you're snookered if that forward misses out for some reason. Whatever floats your boat.

            • 7 Years

It's one GW, with a FT coming immediately that can be spent on getting any other forward who's fit/available... And still happens rarely. This, as I said above, happens a lot more rarely than red cards and pen misses, which would not stop you from getting a nailed player who takes pens... Or getting Son 😀

I agree, benches are overrated. As for me, I might play 4-5-1 - I feel like only 4-5-1 and 4-4-2 can squeeze in the greatest amount of premium players I want.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

That's what's happening to me, but I was wondering if there was a trend from the seasons before I started playing that I may be unaware of

        1. Greek Freak
          • 10 Years
          5 years, 11 months ago

I started in 2015-16. Not that I can remember, though my first season wasn't a very serious one. By far my best season was when I started 4-4-2, and actually stuck to it for most of that season.

Last year I went 4-5-1 and that sucked, though that was largely due to Liverpool's inability to keep clean sheets rather than flaws in the formation per se

          1. Greek Freak
            • 10 Years
            5 years, 11 months ago

I don't remember any particular occasions I needed more than 1 sub from the bench. There must have been a small handful, but certainly nowhere near enough to make me think 4-5-1 is a mistake.

            1. Blueberg
              • 10 Years

depends on the time of the year i think. But yeah I always think 1none player is OK, 2none player is a risk, 3none player is mental.

                • 10 Years
                5 years, 11 months ago

Basically with a 4-5-1 there would be a playing defender on the bench that could conceivably get a clean sheet. One completely nobody, and another forward that would normally get 1 point cameos. It would be extremely improbable that, on the rare occasions I need my 1-pointer off the bench, I could've had a different option that scored. Because, by nature, benched players blank more often than not. And if they don't, that's too much money on the bench 😉

Yeah. Cheap strikers exploded last season with the best defenders getting more frustrating/unpredictable by the week (Digne, Robbo, VVD, Doc, Pereira)

A trend, not the formation's fault. Things evened out a bit as time went on, but you'd have changed your team by then

There was a variety of factors that killed the big at the back approach (and this applies to the 4-4-2 equally). The Alisson and Laporte injuries, Wolves' Europa League commitments that made them really sluggish at the start, as well as Digne playing for well... Everton.

They would have to play the GW1 fixture midweek, which is up against the League Cup round 2. They would only be able to play a midweek fixture that week if it is against one of the other teams that is in the 2020-21 UEL/UCL group stage (Spurs are only in the qualifying round). All the teams not in Europe enter the League Cup at round 2.

See Ben Crellin's twitter for details.

I feel Wolves would have been harder for united the way they like to play, I feel Sevilla will suit them ... as a utd fan I want them to win, but as an fpl manager id like the added options united attackers would bring to make the initial squad assembly harder ....

I feel Mason Greenwood is incredible value @ £7.5M if united are to start from GW1...

With the GW deadlines now 90 minutes pre-match, it would be even funnier when the FPL site is still updating at halftime

Alright - here's someone I think is being overlooked after his performances in the last few games of the season and Europa league stints, he passed the eye test and is playing as a second forward for Wolves, almost in the Jota role as of two years ago!

    Daniel Podence - 5.5 - thoughts anyone?

I've seen him in some drafts. Won't he be rotated with Jota?

Potentially, but I think unlikely as he seemed to nail down a spot at the end of the season starting 3 of the final 4 premier league games and starting in the Europa League. Didn't play against Sevilla due to suspension.

Two seasons ago Jota managed 9 goals and 8 assists. I think Podence is a more explosive player and at 5.5 saving 1 million on Jota who people are tempted by after his reclassification!

        Could be tempting...

Podence vs Jota: no clear favourite yet

Traore vs Neto: Traore favourite, but rested quite often

There'll be no European competition this time, so most of the rotation will be within EPL. The only one of those four who's clearly above the rest (and only became so last season) is Traore, who gets rested as I said earlier

Except if something happens in the transfer market before the GW1 deadline or we see something in preseason, getting any of those four feels risky.

Yeah, I took a punt on him in GW38+ on FH and he got benched after 3 starts in a row. The Predicted Line-Ups tool showed him starting up front with Jim which looked very tasty, but it failed me that time!

But if he becomes clear first choice, then could be really good to have.

Alternatively, less rotation happens as we see with Sheffield and Burnley last year due to no European schedule. Often European football leads to the rotation because of a more congested schedule whereas a lack of European football may lead to a more consistent lineup up until Christmas or PL fixture congestion!

Podence at 5.5 vs 6.5 saving 1 million for someone who seems in favor and more likely to start as the second forward seems like a slight favorite to me

The key point here is that you seem sure he's the favourite

Jota did not have a bad season, at least when compared to Podence. As I said earlier, we might get a hint of favouritism in preseason, so that should help. I don't see Nuno relegating Jota to the bench for someone on a similar level of output without having to sell/loan Jota out (David Luiz situation), so that's where potential transfer market moves might help with the decision as well

But if Podence turns out the favourite, his ownership should skyrocket for good reason at that price

Starting the season with Son, and pretty sure I'll end the season with him, but also sure I'll sell him after each of his red cards then buy him back after missing a few hauls, so not quite "set-and-forget"

I don't think I've forgiven Son for his negative score when I triple captained him two years ago.

        Ah, damn

And he reels you in so well, with brilliant form and that juicy fixture that makes you finally give him the (triple) armband for the inevitable card colour

        Accept my condolences

It's weird because he's not really a violent player, nor a card magnet - he's just been getting those odd red cards here and there over the last couple of seasons.

And it's ok - I should've triple captained Salah vs. Huddersfield the week I TC'd Son anyway! I think over the past few seasons I've been paying back my luck when I TC'd Alexis Sanchez for 75 points in my first season.

Got two reds i think for just last season with another injury. Missing too much games. PPM also not so high.

        Oh, but when he plays...

The PPM you're seeing is affected by his cards (and pen miss?), but those actually count as part of the deal when you buy him anyway 😀

Dude started the season on a red card ban from the previous season, ffs

Greenwood unless Sancho arrives then I would choose Foden.

Just seems more likely to start and Foden still hasn't nailed down a starting spot and I'm a little unsure as to what his output is going to be in terms of goals and assists week in and week out!

This game has always been about finding the under priced assets...
Armstrong, Soucek and Saint Maximin all seem to be good value as rotating bench warmers. Is it bad that I have all three in my team at the mo?

Not bad but you have both Burnley LB's starting? Maybe switch Pieters to a Leeds FB or KWP. Try another w/o any Utd, might miss GW1.

I think he slightly below Salah for last season's points even if he mid last season.

But with Arteta make Arsenal tighter starting 30+ , Auba can have more points as Arsenal maybe will have more clean sheet next season

Same situation can be said to Liv too if Allison fit full season. It close

Here I have it right now
    Patricio (McCarthy)
    TAA, Saiss, Pieters (KWP, Ayling)
    KDB, Salah, Rashford, Soucek
    Adams, Jimenez (Rodriguez)
