There will be a different goalkeeper between the posts for Sheffield United next season.

Dean Henderson (£5.5m) has returned to parent club Manchester United after two years with the Blades and Chris Wilder has moved quickly to replace the departing loanee, snapping up Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) from relegated Bournemouth.

In this Moving Target article, we’ll assess the new shot-stopper’s prospects in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and whether the changing of the guard will affect Sheffield United’s clean sheet potential.

Ramsdale returns to the club he represented as a youth and has signed a four-year deal with the South Yorkshire side, who reportedly paid around £18.5m to land the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Upon sealing the deal for Ramsdale’s services, Wilder said:

The goalkeeping situation is something we have to make sure we get right.

This is not about Dean, it’s about bringing Aaron in, but Dean was outstanding for us for two years. We know a lot about Aaron, we’ve watched him develop on loan at Chesterfield and then AFC Wimbledon and obviously we’ve watched him this season too.

I’d like to thank the board for their backing given the situation. Aaron is certainly amongst the best young goalkeepers in this country and we are delighted to have him.

The new Sheffield United number one said himself:

I spoke to him [Wilder] after the fee was agreed and a couple of days later he just said, ‘are we getting it done?’

I knew him, all of his coaching staff and Darren Ward [United’s goalkeeping coach].

It’s a place I always come back to and see friends if I ever get time off over the weekend and family members are only about an hour and a half away, so I get to see them more regularly as well.

Knowing the place, the training ground and the people so well, it definitely feels like home.

The History

Born in May 1998 and still in the embryonic stage of his professional career, Ramsdale hadn’t had any playing experience in the top two tiers of English football before 2019/20.

He had originally joined Sheffield United from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, progressing through the Blades’ academy system and graduating to reserve goalkeeper ahead of the 2016/17 season.

It was, fittingly, Wilder who handed him his senior debut, with the-then teenage custodian making two starts in the opening rounds of the FA Cup in late-2016.

Although Ramsdale didn’t make a single league appearance for the Blades, Bournemouth had already seen enough and snapped up the young shot-stopper for £800,000 in January 2017.

Over two years were to pass before he played a single competitive game for the Cherries and, in between, he was sent out on loan to Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

Ramsdale made 39 league appearances across those two half-season loan spells and it was in the second of them, with the Dons in League One, that he really caught the eye, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 starts and winning their 2018/19 Young Player of the Year award despite only joining the club midway through the campaign.

Returning to the south coast and featuring prominently in pre-season under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was given the nod between the posts in 2019/20 and went on to start all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 league fixtures.

He kept just five clean sheets (no team registered fewer shut-outs than the Cherries) and conceded on 62 occasions but, as we’ll soon discuss, that was as much a reflection on relegated Bournemouth’s overall defensive shortcomings as it was an indictment on Ramsdale.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, fans of the Cherries voted their former goalkeeper as their Player of the Season.

No. Djenepo was benched before his injury with Armstrong favoured (he has much better defensive discipline and tracks back).

Put off the Werner hype as Chels have Liverpool GW2 and he is unproven! Jimi = mr Reliable, plus lovely fixtures from gw3

I think Werner's first 5 games are really good for attacking returns (except GW2) but as you said Jimi is proven & consistent so can't blame you.

I love how people are just planning to get so easily off some of these big players to got to man utd and man city. If those players go big gameweek 1 I doubt people will easily ditch them. So many people saying Liverpool were poor post restart. What did they have to play for? People forget that they scored 5 goals against Chelsea in a game where Chelsea had everything to play for (going for champs league) and Liverpool had nothing to play for. Really there attack was fine just not as good defensively. Also wondering why everyone is jumping so quickly on Tottenham. They may have fixtures but this is a mourinho side where talking about. One goal and he goes defensive so you are unlikely to get huge returns from the attackers. Defence would be the better bet

      Mane->Bruno GW2

Why not? We would be ditching for next week, last week's haul would have no relevance. I didn't see anyone hesitate to sell Auba after his haul vs Norwich during the restart.

Probably worth mentioning that despite scoring 5 goals vs Chelsea, Salah and Mane only got an assist each in that match.

I'm planning Auba > KDB for GW 3, pretty set on that given Auba's fixtures, but might end up going without Man Utd assets. My other big hitters (Salah, Kane, Werner) have pretty good fixtures for the first 8/9, and if they impress me I'll be in no rush to get rid of them for Bruno/Martial - but it's good to have the option

I keep going round the houses but I've arrived at this:

    McCarthy, fodder
    TAA, Vinagre, KWP, Justin, Ferguson
    Auba, Salah, Greenwood, ASM, Soucek
    Kane, Werner, fodder.

Any ideas on how to improve?
Looking to switch Auba to KDB which will save 0.5m

Hard to say at the moment, because we don't know is Saliba or Vinagre will be starters, nor how long Justin will be a starter for. Assuming all of them *are* starters, I'll say:

BAFEDCG (for the opening sets of fixtures)

But assuming there's big questions marks over the aforementioned 3:

      AECGBFD

But I also recommend looking at Walker-Peters/Lamptey in rotation - fixtures until GW 16 (wildcard deadline) are: cry, new, bur, WBA, cry, WBA, avl, NEW, avl, MUN, SOU/bri, SHU, ful, SHU, ful, WHU. Not perfect, but really good on the whole

Just thinking of when Costa joined Chelsea and how much he fed off the crowd.

I'm wondering will new signings feel a wee bit meh with nobody there celebrating their names, chanting in their thousands whilst nursing their egos. Some players need that and Costa came straight to mind.

A new player who isn't popular in the dressing room because they love themselves too much won't have fans to get behind them and may well struggle in their new surroundings.

Lads, I think I like my team/strategy, but I've got one thing left to decide and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Here's how it is as of now:

    A) McCarthy / Nyland
    TAA / Doherty / Vinagre / Dallas / Saliba
    Salah / Aubameyang / Ziyech / Armstrong / Gordon
    Werner / Jiménez / Davies

    Gameweek 1: Ziyech to Greenwood
Gameweek 2 or 3: Auba to KDB

Now, I could ditch Ziyech and bench Greenwood, and start with a 5-3-2 like this:

    B) McCarthy / Nyland
    TAA / Doherty / Vinagre / KWP / Saliba
    Salah / Aubameyang / Armstrong / Gordon / Greenwood
    Werner / Jiménez

    What would you guys do?

Trent - VVD - Vinagre - Ream (or a more nailed Fulham 4.5 if someone can recommend) - Ferguson
    Salah - Auba - Son - ASM - Armstrong
    Werner - Mitro - (Davis)

Hector is the stand out Fulham def for quality.

I too would go for Hector - see him having a good season.

Not sure about both ASM and Armstrong in midfield with Mitro up front, seems like a lot could go wrong? Maybe ASM and Armstrong > Soucek and 4.5, then a 6.0 forward instead of Davis to play... Che Adams?

    Which draft do you prefer:
    1:
    McCarthy
    Trent, Vinagre, Justin
    Salah, Son, Auba, ASM, Ziyech,
    Werner, Mitrovic
    Button, KWP, Ferguson, Davis

    2:
    McCarthy
    Trent, Vinagre, Justin, Dier
    Salah, Son, Auba, ASM,
    Werner, Mitrovic
    Button, Ferguson, Greenwood, Davis

Both have their merits, but also their curiosities. What are you hoping to get from Dier that you couldn’t get (plus more) from other in his price point or cheaper?

Spurs are a Mourinho team - I'm expecting a tight defence. Not really expecting much from attacking returns personally. But they should be worth it defensively.

      2) Is almost my exact current team - only difference is that I keep talking Son out & swapping for Ziyech+1mn & then back again. So a very similar problem!

Think I’m fairly happy with this now. 1.5 ITB to give me flexibility to do Son to Bruno

    McCarthy
    TAA, Justin, Vinagre
    Salah, Auba, Son, Ziyech, ASM
    Jiminez, Mitro

    Nylan, Davis, Ferguson, 4.0

With a bit of finesse you could get Robbo (200+ points for £7m season keeper) into that team

Looks good to me. Like the Ziyech pick, though you do need to keep tabs on Justin and Vinagre minutes - both could need transferring out in early weeks if other players return from injury

The real question is, can Ramsdale grow a proper beard?

After far too long tinkering, I'm settling on something a bit like this.

    McCarthy
    TAA - Egan - Vinagre
    Salah - Auba - Son - Podence
    Ings - DCL - Antonio
    (Nyland - Ferguson - Stevens - Shaw)

Would allow me to do the following:
    GWK 2 - Son + Antonio > KDB + Fodder (play 4-4-2 with Shaw)
GWK 3 - Auba > whichever MUN asset
GWK 4 - Upgrade striker fodder or Podence

    Any thoughts?

You know when you have a hunch or feeling about a player that it might be their turn for points and the following week you want to sell again? DCL is that man mate.

Why so much love for ASM...Is it purely down to his price point?

I'm heavily considering him as a placeholder for the first to 2GWs due to Newcastle's good fixtures, then I can go up to Greenwood.

1.5 mil in bank to upgrade son to bruno and then downgrade aub to kdb and upgrade defenece if needs be

    mccarthy
    taa, vinagre, justin
    salah, son, ziyech, asm, auba
    jimenez, mitro

    subs- nyland, ferguson, branthwaite, davis

looks good and solid plan. would just be wary with Vinagre as Wolves may sign a wingback.

    Thoughts? Rate /10
    McCarthy
    Trent • Vinagre • Justin • Saliba
    Salah • Mane • Auba • Armstrong
    Werner • Mitrovic
    (Nyland / Soucek / Ferguson / Brewster)

3 heavy hitters in midfield means easy transfers to KDB/Sterling/Bruno. Can do Werner to Martial GW2 if it looks like he’ll need time to settle
