We at Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce that we’ve added yet another high-profile name to our all-star cast of contributors for the 2020/21 season.

And Fantasy Premier League managers don’t come much more illustrious than Fábio Borges, who currently sits atop our Career Hall of Fame.

You’ll need a pretty impressive season history to claim first place in those rankings and Fábio boasts an incredible track record of five successive finishes in the top 5,000 of FPL.

Two of those have been inside the top 1k, with his best-ever overall rank of 95th recorded in 2018/19.

Fábio has never finished outside the top 20,000 in six seasons of playing the game and, just to underscore his prowess, he was also the winner of Ragabolly’s inaugural Virtual FPL competition over the summer.

The Lisbon resident will be involved with Fantasy Football Scout in a Pro Pundit capacity and will be writing articles throughout the season.

Fábio follows site founder Mark Sutherns in joining our star-studded team of contributors, which includes some of the best FPL managers in the world.

The likes of Lateriser, Zophar and Tom Freeman, who have multiple top 1k finishes between them, have come aboard for another year and we are thrilled that they will be writing for us once again in 2020/21.

While there will be our usual offering of free content from these elite names, only Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout will get unrestricted access to all of their analysis and team reveals.

Full-year subscriptions are available for the pre-season price of £17.50 until August 31, while rolling monthly Memberships can be purchased for £2.99.

Any thoughts on where to improve this?

    McCarthy/Button
    TAA/Doherty/Digne/Vinagre/Ferguson
    Salah/Auba/Son/ASM/Soucek
    Werner/Mitro/Davis (or Brewster if moves)

      Great squad

What is plan for Manchester? Digne is an interesting one. Rather overlooked him - but if Everton are solid at the back that could be a great call

Probably look at Auba to KDB and/or Werner to Martial. If Werner looking good then potentially Son to Greenwood and maybe ASM to Spurs winger if they look settled.

Don’t think it’s template to have the big 2 up top - could pay off, could back fire - guess that’s the great thing about this tough start !

Very similar to.mine as far as the big names go, which I don't consider particularly template.

I've kept more funds in mf to make the Manchester switches easier, but if youre thinking of going martial up top at some point I think youre in quite a good spot.

Mitrovic Armstrong and Soucek all in the staring 11 worries me.

I guess you have to take a tough decision and downgrade one of your big 4.
The one which you're probably not going to captain does not justify the huge spend in him

Currently in Jimenez for these reasons:

        a) Plays in a better team
        b) Has a better injury record.

Two seasons steady form - improving - for Jim. Wolves have no Europa and look good to improve on last season. He is the most consistent returner in the game bar none.

Like Ings a lot and could well end up with both but Jim has the FPL record. Wolves over Southampton if you will

Just seen someone on Digne - now intrigued as someone who doesn't want multiple 4.5s at the back.

Leaving aside price which is better: AWB (current selection) or Digne until GW7 - likely window for WC on my scheme? 0.5 can always be found.

Stats are relatively equal if you look at second half of last season and Everton definitely have edge in fixtures and I'd have Digne and Everton as more likely to sustain that form or improve on it. The United defensive form from 25 on seems a bit of a mirage to me - can't see the logic as to why they improved so much in defence once Bruno appeared.

    1. IN SANE IN DE BRUYNE

I think it depends on how Everton are looking defensively in pre season. I think Digne is a great choice if they are solid at the back but I'd say AWB for now.

I think if aurier doesn't move hes the obvious 5.5 pick. If I was pushing up to 6 doherty is first on the list and I think id still go aurier over digne. Can't trust Everton.

        6 years, 17 hours ago

Both and is what I'm looking at. The real choice there would be Robbo/VVD or Digne if I go this route.

Double Liverpool I'm possibly waiting on until cs form is established - on a WC perhaps. It's a significant investment and while there are clear reasons the dual failures at either end of last season makes me willing to wait. Also Liverpool cs are fixture driven to some extent and their golden run doesn't start early

        1. Karan_G14
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 17 hours ago

I'm also quite keen on doubling up on Pool defence but like you I'm waiting till about GW4/5 once the Chelsea & Arsenal fixtures are out of the way. Not sure about investing into a third premium def right now as if Vinagre is nailed he's probably 1m underpriced and there are also other decent options to rotate with him.

AWB, as Everton are a weaker team.

United defence was good all season as you can see by how goals they conceded.

Before Fernandes arrived they were struggling to score, and as such they conceded late goals trying to win games.

Their defence improved when he arrived because they starting scoring goals and didn't need to 'chase' games as much

        This

They were consistently towards the top end of defensive underlying statistics all season

Sorting the league table by XGc is fascinating

According to XGc there are 5 elite defences in the league - Pool, City, Utd, Chelsea, Wolves all have XGC’s below 40 (city best at 37.5, Chelsea worst at 38.8 & the other three in between, including Man Utd)

        However

When you introduce the Kepa factor, Chelsea’s XGC delta is a quite frankly (excuse the pun) mental +15

But Utd are a statistically elite defence, unquestionably

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years
          6 years, 16 hours ago

Man Utd also only conceded 50 big chances all season

Only Wolves (47) were better on that metric

Pool conceded 64, city conceded 59, Chelsea 63

I’m looking at second half of season where Ancellotti came in as a point of comparison

Not overly keen on Everton defence but when you jiggle figures that way Everton are not far off your elite defences.

Merely pondering at this stage. Get the point about why United defence improved but still just a touch sceptical that they belong in the elite group - still gave AWB in of course 🙂

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 16 Years
            6 years, 16 hours ago

Since Carlo came in GW19-38 range

they’re still way behind Utd on XGc (26 vs 19)

Further behind on GC (27 vs 14)

Half the amount of CS (5 vs 11)

            Etc etc

Wouldn’t be queuing up to spend more on Everton defenders - hey would need massive progression, plus Utd massive regression just to equalise their output

Then you still have the price differential

Digne can be great in DPL though, albeit Siggy has taken back a few set pieces

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 16 Years
              6 years, 16 hours ago

              But to be honest

Man Utd’s statistical defensive eliteness is an example of why you have to take “tHe uNdErLyInG StaTiCs“ with a MASSIVE pinch of salt for FPL decision making

No one was queuing up to get Utd defenders, as on the eye test you can clearly see they are shaky - Maguire can be turned quite easily & struggles for pace, Lindelof can be bullied quite easily & isn’t great in the air, AWB can tackle, but spends way too much time on the ground/diving in etc etc

Statistically they trump Everton hands down though

If all that’s true though, wouldn’t your ‘eye test’ be borne out in more chances conceded because of those frailties?

                1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                  • 16 Years
                  6 years, 14 hours ago

Not necessarily - both Utd & chelsea defences are shaky in reality (versus a baseline of say Liverpool or a City with Laporte starting), but both are elite statistically on a sample of the 38 individual game snapshots from last season added together (along with Liverpool or City)

What Opta measure as big chances, and what Opta measure as XGc etc won’t always directly translate what your eye would measure as the quality of a defence

Especially when you then overlay the FPL scoring system, and factor in prices, attacking potential etc - the underlying defensive statistics become even less practically useful - they’ll either tell you things that aren’t true - that Man Utd & Chelsea defenders should be good FPL picks - or they’ll tell you things you already know - that Liverpool defenders are good FPL prospects etc

            2. Moderately content penguin
              • 7 Years

Part of the context here for me is that I distrust team XGC as a heavily weighted factor.

Palace and Newcastle would have been relegated twice now if it mattered 🙂 Also Chelsea problems are not simply Kepa based imo. Franks Derby let in exactly the same type of goals in the championship.

Everton for sure would be a punt of sorts but fundamentals there possibly for a cs run with benign fixtures. Looking here at run up 7/8 when I likely WC in to heavy defence

Think Digne has an upside that could tempt me. Could no more

Wigan Athletic first-team coach Anthony Barry is set to move on from the club to join Frank Lampard's coaching staff. With Barry having worked with Reece James (5.0m in FPL) previously at Wigan in 18/19, this could possibly mean James might get a good run at the XI. Possibly even nailed.

I'd have thought James was almost nailed regardless, I expect 25+ starts this season at least..
That would change if they signed Chilwell, as azpi is fighting back at rb then.. but lamp seems happy to use azpi lb, and James rb

I am also keeping track of his fitness,

Chelsea like scoring, but might take a while to settle with so many new signings, as Havertz also on his way.

I guess Mount is the odd man out, with Havertz in midfield.
Front three being Zyiech - Werner - Pulisic.

Rashford’s underlying stats suggest that as a midfielder he’ll smash it. Worth the gamble IMO. Can you get Bruno and Rashford?

No, I'm going without for the time being. Man United and Chelsea are the value teams to start off with this year I think. KDB's lost his appeal for me. Keeping an eye on Mahrez' minutes instead.

I'd even take that a step further and advise benching a Utd/City asset in GW 1.

I think planning transfers in advance is a risky move what with injuries, bandwagons etc.

If you want Martial/Greenwood etc, find a way to have them on your bench on GW 1 whilst starting the likes of Soucek instead.

2 FTs in GW 3 will be so valuable.

I think this is a great shout. Gw1 bandwagon usually brings in some nice rises. Could be better to have Bruno sitting on my bench.

If you can make that work, I'd say go for it.

Too many people here saying GW 2 transfers this, GW 3 transfer that. Not considering injuries, bandwagons, their starting XI may not have hit the ground running/be nailed etc.

Upside chasing. If Man City and Man Utd were playing in GW1 with their fixture list, everyone would probably have 5 or 6 from them.

Plus it looks like the big DGW is going to be in January this year rather than in the 30s, so 2nd WC likely to be played months earlier than usual.

    9. Sgt Frank Drebin

I was wondering the same, a waste of a WC for me. Man City doesn't even have good fixtures at the start of the season. And if you really want Man United assets you can get 2 for -4 if you plan well in advance. I think WC is worth more than 4 points...

    10. Klaren
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 17 hours ago

Many people want more Manchester players than two by GW3 and there’ll be very sharp increase in prices (United players are always the fastest increase due to fans).

Also many tend to WC quite early anyway in order to get any bargains early on and fix their team once they see the form of the teams, how promoted teams have started, any teams to target etc.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 17 hours ago

I often used WC quite early too, but I suspect that we can draw false conclusions from just 1 GW. Let's say Leeds wins 3-0 the first game and everyone will load up on their players, but they were just quite lucky and then they lose next 5 games in a row scoring 3 goals. 3GW of data is also not perfect but should give you much more information than a single gameweek. We won't know anything about Manchester clubs too.

        1. Klaren
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 16 hours ago

I think more are planning a GW3 WC than a GW2 WC anyway so you’ll have 2 GWs of data. I’m not that worried about watching the Manchester clubs before getting their players as they are quite settled and 1st/2nd (City) and 3rd/4th (United) best teams in the league anyway.

He is definitely risky, hasn’t played since January. I don’t expect him to get into the team early on. I’ll start with Mitchell or Johnson as the 4.0 defender and maybe move to Ferguson on my WC.

Who do you currently prefer and why:

    A) Werner and Greenwood
    B) Martial and Ziyech

Looking at starting with 1 Utd asset in my squad and I prefer Martial over Greenwood but can't quite tell if Ziyech over Werner is too much of a compromise.

I do have a good feeling about Ziyech though. 27 years old so should go straight into the team. Also, he looks to have little-to-no competition for that RW spot (Mount and Pulisic both predominantly have played LW).
