One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

Yes, I’m leaning towards an approach of cash cows combined with base price players rather than overly spreading the cash on mid price and/or cheap punts that lock away .5s. Lots of variations to this. This I like. Playing a 4.5 each week early doors is sensible for 3 reasons a) 2 points is decent in PPM terms b) they don’t lock unnecessary cash c) that random Armstrong haul (for example) was great... only you picked ASM (for example) who turns out he was dud punt that needs transferring out to a 4.5 to free funds

I think if Tierney has a season at LWB he will go off. I think Arsenal will keep more CS under Arteta and I think Tierney will be involved in approaching 10 goals. Be surprised if I don't have him in my team at some point.

I am seriously considering having on bench gw1. Think he could provide some real value and act like a mini KDB. If he is starting 65%+ of the games his price could well rocket and he will be in everyones team.

    Any Liverpool fans on?

Is Minamino likely to start for you this season? Has been your best player in pre season I’d argue and with Mané/Salah looking off the boil, he could be a good shout instead?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      5 years, 10 months ago

Can't see a situation where he's ever part of the best 11 because quite simply the other players are better than him, however yes he could have a few runs in the team this season and if you time it right and he fires then you're laughing

    2. Z
      • 8 Years

He doesn't play as part of the front 3 ffs. Seen so many mention that. He'll sit just in behind them, but is very dangerous. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he starts next Saturday..

It looks like Klopp is trying out both 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-1-3. Minamino is gonna be coming off the bench for now while they work that new system out. So, I expect games to start 4-3-3 with Wijnaldum, Keita, and Fabinho (until Henderson gets back and pending Wijnaldum's contact situation). Once Taki comes on, system changes. We have to see where he ends up playing.

Summary of what Mourinho said about Alli in the All or Nothing documentary:

    1. He called him a lazy trainer.
    2. He had a talk with him where he said that he had great potential but that his career has had ups and downs.
    3. He said that Sir Alex asked him to sign him.
    4. After Alli scored a brace in some game, when journalists asked him if Alli was back to his best, he praised him (which manager wouldn't?)

So can someone explain to me why the conclusion is that he's Mourinho's favorite?

This is false too. He had a talk with Dier and did ask him why he didn't make the first team with Poch. But he also subbed Dier off early in a CL game after a poor start which they ended up winning. Dier was upset about this and Mou told Poch that he would have to start Dier the next game for this reason and bench Winks. Dier was benched lots of times under Mou last season and did not play at CB every time.

Personally find it a glorified advert for Mourinho. They cover pochettinos season in 15 minutes. No insights into why he was fired and suddenly Mourinho and Levy are having inane conversations at the dinner table. What about the goal by sonny heh!

Hopes are very low indeed after the first 3 episodes.

Mitro. I'm going by the trend in previous seasons where Mitro and Pukki have started well. My theory is that promoted teams have more confidence (before a few pastings bring them down to earth) and other teams come back from pre season slightly disorganised so the talisman will score goals.

From what I can gather (and it's a bit sketchy) it was

          Martinez
          Bellerin Holding Saliba Cedric
          Ozil Elneny Ceballos
          Aubameyang Lacazette Willock

Pepe and Willian also played at some point

This may not be 100% accurate but it's the best I can put together.

Any decent striker for 5m or less apart from Davis?

Thinking 451 to get Doherty over Mitrovic

In isolation I’d guess Doherty will be far more enjoyable to own than Mitro. However, in these volatile times, having Davis AND a Wickham is perhaps questionable.

Doherty is also a gateway (drug) to Laporte and Pool. Mitro is a gateway to another bandwagon

A few differentials is never bad in this game?

    McCarthy
    Trent, Davies, Vinagre, Keane
Auba C, Salah, Saka, Grealish, Alli
    Vardy,

    Steer, Mitchell, Davis, Brewster,

      Davies ➡️ Dier
      Keane ➡️ Coleman
      Alli ➡️ Son
And Saka is so not nailed

      1. g40steve
        • 8 Years

Davies ➡️ Dier - Yes I see the reasoning.
Keane ➡️ Coleman - reasoning? Keane outscored Coleman easily last year?
Alli ➡️ Son - this was the one troubling me - when Kane plays Son not so prolific?
And Saka is so not nailed - he can play in many positions?

Who knows what GW1 will bring but have 2 m for changes & players at decent price points?

He outscored him because Coleman has injury + he has competition on then position.

Saka is rly not the best option....

    Thoughts on these?
Gw 2- Son and Ings ➡️ Bruno and DCL.
    GW 3- Auba ➡️KDB
    Gw 4- ASM➡️JWP.
    Gw 5 wildcard.

    McCarthy Steer.
    Trent Taylor KWP Vinagre Lamptey
    Salah Auba ASM Son Soucek
    Werner Ings Davis.

      overthinking

i think most are preplanning a utd player and KdB transfer but beyond that your transfer will be whoever scored a couple of goals in the first two weeks

Pretty set on this team I think providing no better 4.0m option appears and J.Rodriguez is 7.0-7.5m.

    Meslier
    James Vinagre Mitchell
    Mane(C) Aubameyang Rodriguez Armstrong
    Werner Ings DCL

    P.Farrell Bissouma Laporte Cancelo

Quite like the everton picks but double Man City defense with that run of fixtures? Why not diversify with Doherty or Davies?

        A certain Koulibaly is coming.

I think they’re undervalued this year, and with the blank and tough fixtures I don’t think many will get on board a city defender let alone two. Genuinely think they can get a clean sheet against anyone. Fancy them big time to do well.

He scored a perfectly good goal (late run to the far post sliding it home) which was ruled out for an incorrect offside (no VAR used today).
It was a laboured performance as a whole by England against a very defensive team, Kane looked as good as anyone to score and didn’t appear sluggish or slow. I’d be confident if I owned him, personally going Alli for what it’s worth.

Hi. Can I get an RMT please:

    Mc Carthy (Steer)
    Vinagre, TAA, KWP (Taylor, Mitchell)
    Auba, Son, Salah, Soucek (Bissouma)
    Ayew, Ings, Werner

    Thinking KDB for Auba Gw3
    Mitro maybe for Ayew

    RMT

    McCarthy 4
    TAA Digne Davies Vingare 4
    Auba Bruno Alli Soucek 4.5
    Werner Ings Mitro
    0.5 banked

Martial comes in wk2, KdB wk3, and potentially Puli wk4.
No Salah a bit of a worry but his form isnt great right now and im struggling to find a 4.5 defender i trust.
