Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has forged himself an increasingly significant role among Fantasy Premier League managers inside the top 10,000.

After a surge of ownership in Gameweek 12, and a goal against Spurs, the Egyptian is the most powerful asset at this level for Gameweek 14.

Despite pre-game rumours of a benching, which proved to be true, no player was captained by more top 10k managers this weekend than Salah.

28.6% of them backed him for the trip to Selhurst Park, the reward eventually coming after his 57th-minute introduction for Sadio Mané (£11.9m).

The fact that Salah still managed to record a 16-point haul from the bench puts some pressure on the other key captain candidates – all of whom play their Gameweek 14 matches on Sunday.

Harry Kane (£10.9m) came a close second in captaincy debate among the top 10k, backed by 25.1% of them.

That is an intriguing result considering the Spurs man was the third-most-popular skipper in the latest Fantasy Football Scout captain poll, backed by just 9.8% of our voters.

The top 10k and our readers also found some disagreement over Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m). Ahead of a home match against Leeds, the Manchester United man was the second-best captain according to the captain poll (20.6%).

A larger portion of the top 10k handed him the armband in the end (22.9%) but it is still a smaller contingent than Salah and Kane were able to muster.

The top 10k’s relationship with Son Heung-min (£9.6m) is also interesting to analyse.

84.5% of them possess the South Korean, making him the most-owned at this level, 13.9 percentage points above what Kane can boast.

However, only 6.4% of the top 10k were prepared to captain Son for Gameweek 14, roughly a fifth of how many were more comfortable handing Kane the armband.

As a result, despite the perceived advantages of midfield options compared to forwards, it means Kane is a more powerful weapon in the upper echelons than Son.

The Englishman boasts effective ownership of 95.7% for Gameweek 14, compared to 90.8% for his midfield counterpart. Although Salah leads the way this week. He is “effectively owned” by 96.5% and already 16 points to the good before Spurs have even kicked a ball.

That brings us right back to how dangerous Salah is proving to non-owners moving forward, especially in Gameweek 15.

The disparity between his effective ownership and the figures posted by Kane and Son are sure to be even larger during the Boxing Day fixtures.

That’s when Liverpool host the Premier League’s worst defence in West Bromwich Albion while Spurs travel for a much sterner test at Wolves.

As Fantasy managers prepare for the busy Christmas period, there was relatively little movement in the template, suggesting a number of those in the top 10k fancied rolling a transfer.

However, there was one massive shift in midfield, connected with, yes, you guessed it, Salah.

The Egyptian was owned by 54% at this level for the 2-1 win over Spurs but 68% of top 10k managers had him in their side for the 7-0 victory at Crystal Palace.

His seven-point score at Anfield in Gameweek 13 was probably not large enough to trigger that rise on its own, the fact that just over 280,000 managers worldwide signed Salah for Gameweek 14.

Examining the template more closely, we can pinpoint a few signs of where managers compromised to make room for him.

Fernandes saw his top 10k ownership drop from 61.1% to 55.2% and it looks as if Patrick Bamford (£6.3m) remains the man to downgrade to for such moves. His ownership at this level rose by 6.5 percentage points between Gameweeks 13 and 14.

With Blank Gameweek 18 and Double Gameweek 19 on the way, top 10k managers have left off the chips for this latest round of matches.

The Wildcard was used by just 0.7% of them, although this was still the most popular chip for Gameweek 14.

It will be interesting to see when those with first Wildcards still in their back pocket use them over Christmas.

23.3% of the top 10k are yet to deploy it and only have two more Gameweeks in which to pull the trigger.

Depends on the rest of your squad but sure James > TAA what’s not to like 🙂 Of the two I’d prefer Robbo, seems much more involved.

I could parlay T Mitchell and 0.5 into a real player

    McCarthy
    Chilwell / Dias / Taylor

    Forster / Justin / Burke / Mitchell

    0.3 in the bank.

Just noticed OR #1 is killing it this season
    Only WC1 used
43 points lead vs. number 2 (who've used TC)
65 points so far this GW and didn't even captain Salah
1041 points so far so averaging 74+ points per GW
    Only one hit all season
    Impressive!

    GW15 - Wilson > Adam's
    GW16 - KDB & Chilwell > Son & TAA/Robbo
    GW17 - Grealish > Bowen
    GW18 - FH
    GW19 - DCL > Vardy

    Gives me this for DGW;

    McCarthy
    TAA Coufal Taylor
    Salah(TC) Bruno Bowen Son
    Vardy Adams Bamford

    Martin Cancelo Lamptey Reideweld

    Only Son not playing twice.

Depends on how look at captaincy. If you're gonna have it on Salah most weeks, then spread the funds around.
If you want 2-3 brilliant cap options, then you need to take 2 of KdB Bruno Kane

3.9, not dropping and he is the only player around that range that could possibly grab a place in the starting lineup (tbh Clyne has been extremely bad in the last few and maybe even Mitchell could possibly end up starting in the next few). You could go Neco if you feel there will be rotation in the Pool squad but personally, I think it's a waste of a slot for very scarce game time. Thing is there is nothing else that you could do with the FT? Kinda feels like a waste.

It does. But I am happy with my setup for next gameweek, rather than saving the FT I would prefer to save 0.1.
Than potentially burning it in 2 weeks.

Yeah maybe you are right, then again it's a pretty crazy season so personally if I had 2 FTs and not a single issue then maybe I would do that but otherwise I would save the FT for sure.

What to do if you have 8 players for bgw18

Very similar team and some of the moves we are considering are similar too.
I did Chilwell to Robertson for this week and that worked out ok.
You might have to wait a week and do a hit with 3 moves.
Chilwell and James to Zouma and Robertson with another move to save cash.
I wouldn’t rush to get rid of KDB. Yeah City are not on it but medium to long term fixture are great and sgw 19 is a nice fixture too. I think the ones screaming get rid of KDB will want him back soon enough.

I don’t think I will ever get around to getting Son in.

Instead I could do James and Grealish

Very similar situation to the post above maybe I need to take the value drop on James too and get Son the week after.

Now that I'm going to add Salah this week, he won't score more than 10pts in upcoming weeks. Keeps annoying me week in week out! 😆

Anybody here who's captain picks have scored 118 or higher ? Even 100? Mine is 79.

Every year we keep rotating the cap based on fixtures and a 'perma cap Salah' casual team rises above us

      Is that 118 (X2) or 59 (X2)?

Currently on 90 + Kane to go.

Whenever I have captained Salah, it hasn't work for me. In fact rarely any midfielder captain has worked. Forward captaincy have been the saving point.

118(X2). Because that's what you would have got if you capped Salah all weeks

I’m 77 with son to go this week. Had a lot of captain fails. son has saved my @ss a couple of times. Hoping he will this week too seeing as I don’t have Salah.

Rotating captain based on fixtures works fine, captain him in standout weeks like GW1 and GW4 but deviating otherwise is okay. I've got 106 + Bruno and have had Salah for 4 weeks in total, captained him once. Obviously not great for OR but captaincy wise, there's high merit to deviating from Salah.

Your strategy doesn't seem to beat the 'Salah Perma captain' till now.
Obviously it helps in other ways too. You don't make transfers and hits on other captain options and have a better team for sure without the headache of captaincy.
I think a few guys hyping up the UPSIDE CHASING have really made it more complex than it should be

If Bruno scores more than 12, then yes, it beats Salah permacap just fine. You're missing the point though, the likes of Bruno, Kane, and KDB have been much better captains in different weeks and returned highly. The ideal combination, as always, is to have a combination of the best assets each week for the armband. I've seen plenty of guys on Twitter who have comfortably beaten Salah permacap, even with today's haul through this strategy.

Besides, this seems to have been prompted by his excellent 30 minute cameo. Rest assured, all of us would have taken Bruno/Kane for 90 over Salah for 30. There's little wrong with that logic.

I agree that Bruno/Kane were the logical picks.
But switching the captain's is much more risky is what I'm trying to say.
'Some' might beat it and get 140 from their captains, but for that you'll have to absolutely ace your choices each week.
Most people ( like me and a few others who have commented) would actually be worse off.
KdB did outscore Salah in a few weeks and will surely do so in the coming weeks as well. It's just difficult to predict which ones.

I would love to say I have had Salah (c) every week but alas no. My total to date is 80(x2)... let's not forget he missed GW9 so If you had picked DCL 13 (x2) your total to date would be 262 pts... pretty impressive.

Exactly! We're basically reducing the variance by sticking it on one guy throughout.

Only issue with capping someone permanently is it gets boring. Granted it might result in more points, but it's too boring for me to not try different things.

The adrenaline rush that I get after a differential captaincy working is much better than a mega haul from Salah. Even if he starts scoring 10-15pts every week, it wouldn't give me any thrill whereas 6-7pts from Dias or Lookman gives me that.

      1. Sanchit
        • 10 Years

        I agree to this!
But I'll try and get that rush through differentials rather than captains from now on.

This is my plan. Means I can field 11 without taking any hits, and Salah with 2 home games is as good as we're likely going to get.

So the plan was to do Riedewald to Soucek for my BB, should I do Riedewald to Anguissa instead?
I think I'll be doing Soucek to Anguissa anyway after the DGW to save funds... So it saves a future transfer

folks, help me choose between these options.
the considerations are for DGW19 but without sacrificing too much of BGW18, because for now I tend to choose not to use chips. also a little bit of long term consideration.

    1. Kane, Chilwell, coufal, Cavaleiro, bowen
    2. Son, Chilwell, Creswell,Watkins, bowen
    3. Son, Robbo, creswell, watkins, soucek/cavaleiro
    4. Kane, Robbo, Coufal, 2 of Soucek/cavaleiro/Klich

    my team right now:
    Martinez/button
    Chilwell/Lamptey/Dallas/Bednarek/3.9
    Salah/KDB/Bruno/Grealish/ASM
    DCL/Bamford/Watkins

    or any other suggestion?

    Hows this plan look?

    GW15 - Wilson > Adam's
    GW16 - KDB & Chilwell > Son & TAA/Robbo
    GW17 - Grealish > Bowen
    GW18 - FH
    GW19 - DCL > Vardy

    Gives me this for DGW;

    McCarthy
    TAA Coufal Taylor
    Salah(TC) Bruno Bowen Son
    Vardy Adams Bamford

    Martin Cancelo Lamptey Reideweld

Tough one on losing KDB for Salah. Makes total sense on paper but just can’t bring myself to get rid of KDB as I think he’ll haul soon.

Which route do you think is best here for BGW18 & DGW19?

    - I have 8* potential starters for 18
    - I have 5** potential starters for 19
    - I have 5/6 FT up to 18/19
    - I have used my WC

    A) Use 6 FTs to get 11 DGWers for 19 and FH in 18
    B) use 5FTs as normal but try to keep at least 10/11 starters for 18, then FH (or WC) in 19
    C) Something else

    McCarthy**, Forster
    Cancelo*, James**, Bellerin*, Targett*, Douglas
    Salah**, KDB*, Bruno**, Son*, Riedewald*
    Wilson*, Bamford**, Watkins*
    Bank 0.5m, 2FT

FH 18. Then I'd use FTs and 1 or 2 hits to build a BB team for DGW19 without touching the core of the team like Spurs and City assets. I'd use transfers on cheap DGW defenders and a 2nd GK.

Cheers. I’d need to take 4 hits to get 15 DGWers for 19, so not sure it’s the best time for a BB?

One of the problems with B is that AVL/NEW have awful fixtures in the run up to the blanks. Still think it’s doable though.

          • 11 Years

Why do you need 15 DGWers? KDB and Son/Kane anyway stays. Even Cancelo can stay if you can squeeze money from somewhere else to get a DGWer bench. 4 starters in bench will give baseline 16 points from BB.

Yeah that’s true, and they have a decent SGW. I just normally play WC the week before a BB to make sure I fully utilize it. Could be injuries/suspensions etc with players transferring in now for 19.

I don't remember those player fixtures on top of my head, but I think the better one is build using FT to gw that not disrupting much your long-term team that you want.
by long term can mean weeks between now and gw18/19 or some weeks after that.
      i hope that make sense
