Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 2020/21 campaign was a curious one for the Albion, whose 16th-place finish belied some impressive underlying stats – as we’ll discuss below.

Graham Potter’s side could be ones to watch in FPL with the right additions in the transfer market and they’ll certainly be high on the radar from the off, as they sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8.

Don’t forget that you can find official Opta team and player information on the Seagulls in our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

EVEN MORE TO COME DEFENSIVELY?

Salah and blanks again as Brighton defensive assets shine ahead of good run 3

Brighton’s brief flirtation with the drop zone had little to do with their backline.

Potter’s troops conceded only two more goals than Premier League runners-up Manchester United and had a better defensive record than high-flying Leicester City and West Ham United.

This was no fluke, as their underlying numbers show:

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded46=7th
Clean sheets12=5th
Shots conceded3584th
Shots in the box conceded2223rd
Shots on target conceded1253rd
Big chances conceded513rd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)35.863rd

While 12 clean sheets was a respectable total, it could have been even better for the Seagulls.

Their xGC delta (the difference between Opta’s ‘expected goals conceded’ and actual goals shipped) was +10.14, making them the second biggest underachievers in the division from a defensive perspective.

Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have signed all paperworks of Jadon Sancho deal - after agreement in principle announced weeks ago.

Sancho also completed his medical as new Man Utd player. Club preparing the ‘real’ official announcement with new kit.

Strange that it isn't official yet, and Fanteam added Sancho to Manu in their game like two weeks ago priced at 9

We'll have to see. Ole didn't seem to trust Telles in the league at all. Wouldn't shock me if Shaw is thrown straight in.

Bit early to start the EO chat surely 🙂

Quite probably going without but don't regard it as a particularly "brave" move. Yes he did score last season but just the one and when it comes to defenders it's really takes a goal to hurt you - otherwise it's an annoying drip drip effect of lost returns as with Coufal say.

Fun fact: AWB scored twice on 4 more appearances and as such was arguably more explosive

If trends from last year are any indication, United will keep more CS in GW 9-14 (LIV, tot, MCI, wat, che, ARS) than GW 1-8.

Shaw owners will probably bench him against the "better" teams, forgetting that they usually set up for a 0-0 against these teams.

Not a fan tbh. Very weak up front, I like Toney as a pick but has to be considered a risk and is King even nailed? You have two non playing fodder and Lamptey is an injury risk. I'd downgrade Ederson to 4.5 and upgrade King at least.

I think shifting Ederson out for a 4.5 gk and upgrading King is the way to go. And Forster is a waste of money with Ederson your main keeper. When will u realistically play him over the Man City keeper

Meslier save count and historic low Brighton cs count is the bother.

Leeds were way better defensively home than away but Meslier was actually the highest performing goalie in saves away from home last season - better than Emi. If you're paying the extra 0.5 for him you are in a way paying for that.

Return of crowds may alter that. I'm looking at Leeds insisting on attacking stronger sides, nudging me to play Sanchez in those GWs.

Interesting call on return of crowds - hard to say how it will pan out but it's not hard to imagine that form from last season is even less of a guide than it would normally be.

I had Meslier the whole of last season. Big fan. Got clean sheets when not expected, like Man Utd and Chelsea. I don't think rotation is a good idea due to this. I also don't rate Sanchez as a GK, I actually see him as the weakspot in the Brighton defence.

Monitor Fofona during the CS, as Leicester may go 4 atb with Barnes back, and then its Evans, Soyuncu and Fofona fighting for 2 spots

Wanted two GK's from the same team, didn't want to use the BRI pair as I'm happy with Dunk and would also like to keep a space available for Trossard if I decide to get him at some point. As for Traore, I wanted a Villa MID for the first three games and think he's the best option at the prices on offer.

If Sancho comes in at 9.0m I'm tempted to go with KdB + Sancho and ditch Fernandes.

I'm not convinced that Fernandes can keep up his form and 12.0m is a lot. KdB when fit puts up better numbers.

      Bruno plus Son
      Kane plus Sancho

Question marks for different reasons over both Kane and KdB of course so it's very much wait and see.

Just wonder if avoiding Bruno is kind of like going broke trying to save money

He's a season wrecker if utd hit their straps - in his time in the league he's been more destructive than 95% of what we've seen from Salah since his 300 point season

For my money, the Man Utd "Meta" this saeson will be:

      1. Ole rotating his embarassment of riches in the front 3 positions (Cavani, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Pogba)
      2. Man Utd going up another gear in attack to 80+ goals scored (vs. last seasons 73)
      3. Bruno playing his FPL "vacuum cleaner" role behind the rotating attackers - i.e. just hoovering up goal involvements (and the baps that come with) week after week after week

Question marks over Pogba's presence being a good thing or not for sure, and the end of season form certainly wasn't stellar...

But personally I think that was more tiredness - from Ole doing stupid things like playing him on thursday night second leg europa league games with a 4-0 first leg advantage etc

And even through all that he still popped up with 2 goals in his last 4 appearances - that's what an off form Bruno does... when he's rested and on form?

      He will ruin your life

I'm expecting Bruno to comfortably outscore Sancho, especially if Sancho wins pens for Bruno to convert. 3M-worth of difference? As Bruno will be frequently captained and Sancho won't, I'd suggest yes, Bruno is still a better option.

Bruno really wasn't great at the end of the year. I stuck by him like most people but he didn't deliver hugely or anything. It was early in the season after the first few weeks of United getting acclimatized that he really took off.

There's also the possibility they drop Bruno deeper sort of how Portugal do in order to get Rashford, Sancho and Cavani on the field in which case he will certainly not be worth 12m.

As above - Solksjaer was doing stupid things, playing Bruno into the ground, starting him thursday night second leg europa league games with a 4-0 first leg advantage etc

(And he still finished with 2 goals in his last 4 games)

Id put him comfortably down for 30 attacking returns again, starts from a baseline of 9-10 penalties right out the gate, throw in double figure assists, the odd DFK, a goal from play here & there…

And if he so much as farts on the pitch he gets baps

Personally I see Utd’s attack scoring more goals this year, much more rotation in the front 3 positions when all those forwards are fit, and Bruno having a good go at Salah’s 300 pointer

Yeah I have to be honest, I wince every time I see the “why I’m going without Bruno” posts…

To be fair, anything can happen in this game, we all know that, and much, much stranger things have happened than Bruno getting 10-15 points in the first 5x gameweeks… here are no guarantees

But as an FPL asset they really don’t come any better imo

Put Utd down for 80+ goals this year, put them down for more rotation with 6x assassins available in the forward positions & a totally nailed Bruno operating behind them just isn’t a gift horse I’ll be looking in the mouth!

            Different category I think.

Raph is super template of course but had modest returns in his one season. A failed season now wouldn't be regression in anything like the same way. KdB may be a better fit than Martial perhaps for last season.

Just mostly a feeling so hard to rationalise but like Camzy I'm a bit dubious about Bruno continuing his straight line progression this season: large assumption perhaps that OGS will continue to use him in exactly the same way this season and that he will perform in the same way. United have increasingly more options. It;'s not just Sancho but Greenwood as an A lister.

If big transfers happen in the summer - ie Kane. I for one would forego him early without too many concerns. Nothing is forever 🙂

Trying to ignore Euros ( see Shaw) but he looked bat beyond belief.

Oh, the player most likely to dramatically regress this season is Vardy. That he's in NO early drafts suggests we all instinctively know that.

Well I have Vardy! I see him starting off on fire as always. Yes he changed his gameplay to the end of last season, resulting in less goals for himself but more assists, but that was only to help out Nacho acclimatise into the XI while Barnes was out.

It’s dangerous to judge Raphinha’s season as a whole imo, very dangerous

He wasn’t even added to the game until GW5 & didn’t get his first start until GW9

It took until GW14 for him to settle and he notched 14 returns in 22 appearances from GW14-38

From watching him (and Leeds) it’s his GW14-38 form that’s coming this season, not GW1-13

I actually couldn’t believe they made him 6.5, I’d genuinely have been very close picking him at 7.5, thought we might have a slight chance of 7.0

6.5 is just mental - he’s good enough to go up a level from Leeds too, wouldn’t look out of place at any of the top 4

Thing with Raph for me is that he's still mostly promise - if you're talking goals and not just returns in general. The step up from ticking over to being a difference maker if you like.

Agree with what you say but we're yet to see him bang consistently. A bit like Bamford he seemed to be very unlucky at times last season. Not looking at XG or anything like that - just what I saw. There were a number of times when he was half a yard out. Is the killer instinct there?

Even at the level he was at last season 6.5 is good value but to be great value he needs to be finishing consistently for me. Sold him towards the end and didn't regret it particularly.

Great player but waiting to see the great FPL asset. Should happen but....

Welcome back all. Just thought I'd share some of my very early initial thoughts as I tinker with a first draft. I'm thinking about players who may fly under the radar or who may not be a factor just yet, just to get a bit of conversation going. Obviously a lot of speculation and ifs and buts at this stage.

    - Ferran Torres. If City don't sign a central striker, there is a possibility Torres could play false 9 role as he did occasionally at the end of last season. Pep also mentioned that he can play there well recently. Obviously huge rotation risk but a City player potentially OOP for 7mil could be gold.

    - Tammy Abraham. If he gets a move and gets good minutes, 6.5 is a potentially good price. He is a good striker imo, has plenty of experience and should be coming into his prime. Think he would be a great fit at Brighton but I can see him going to West Ham.

    - Reguilon/Doherty. With a new manager and MCI up first, a lot of FPL managers will avoid Spurs. But Reguilon is a talented, attacking full back and if Nuno opts for wing backs like he did successfully at Wolves, 5mil could be great value.

    - Joe Gomez. If Liverpool can get back to a starting team that includes VVD, Gomez in defence and Fabinho,Henderson in midfield, there could be plenty of CS for the reds. I think Gomez and maybe Christensen could be the best value CBs in the game as they play for very good teams who can very possibly get 15+ CS in the season.

      1. Could well be right, but that role could go to Sterling. Forres will be competing with Mahrez for the IR position too. Could be worth a gamble if you have strong bench cover, but on the other hand if he gets late sub appearances you're stuck with one-pointers.

      2. At Brighton he'd be gold, but talk is mostly either Villa or Hammers. That would mean job-sharing with Watkins or Antonio.

      3. Maybe. Need to see how spuds fare early doors.

      4. 3rd or 4th choice now.

I don't see Daka coming in on GW1 and cementing a spot ahead of Nacho. I see Nacho nailed early doors and Daka maybe starting in Europa and Carabao ties before he plays much PL football - and that might be at the expense of a fading Vardy anyway.

Last season each had 24 appearances

        Grealish 6 goals 12 assists
        Maddison 8 goals 7 assists

Essentially all the Maddison returns came in the spell when he was hot from weeks 8-30. That's some form run. A~ very streaky player.

So just from having a quick look at some articles, RMTs and ownership figures, I think the early 'template' is something like this:

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Digne/Coufal
    Bruno, Salah, Raphinha, 6-7mil mid
3 of Toney, Watkins, Antonio, Nacho, Bamford

    (4.0, Ayling, Lamptey, Gilmour)

Will be interesting to see how the popularity of players, teams and formations change as we go towards the start of the season.
