Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to bench strength.

Our trio of top managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, our panel now look at the composition of a Gameweek 1 squad: how many ‘proven’ assets should we be focusing on and is it wise to avoid any gambles?

LATERISER SAID…

I fear that because of what happened with Timo Werner (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) last season, the running narrative will be to not indulge in new imports into the league. But we must remember that for every Werner and Havertz, there has also been a Diego Costa, Michu, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) who took the league by storm from the start.

The point I’m trying to make here though is that when it comes to new imports into the league, the case is very subjective and based on your judgement of the player and his role in the team. Based on what happened last season, though, I do have a theory in my head that I’m willing to test out.

I feel like the case with Chelsea was a unique one, with Frank Lampard fielding a largely new team instead of it being the case of adding one attacker to an already settled side. When it comes to these premium clubs and marquee signings, I’d be more willing to roll the dice if it’s just one addition to a tried-and-trusted starting XI – which was not the case with the Blues.

That was my opinion about newer teams. Even when it comes to promoted sides, we have seen that clubs like Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a fast start in the league.

So I’m not completely against gambles in your Gameweek 1 squads but there does need to be a balance and your picks need to be heavily researched.

When it comes to promoted sides, it is a relative shot in the dark when it comes to anticipating how they are going to adapt to the standards of the Premier League. Similarly, when it comes to new managers at clubs, we aren’t exactly sure about player roles under the set up-of the new head coach.

So out of all these three categories, I’d cap ‘risky’ picks at two in my Gameweek 1 team. If you do want to indulge in more punts, I’d definitely not do it with the premium options. One risky heavy hitter (if at all) is the most I’d go with.

I learnt the hard way last year that it is very important to not stray too far from the pack early on as it can lead to you ‘trying things’ too early in the season, which might derail your campaign.

TOM SAID…

I always like to have a couple of proven premiums in my squad, mainly for captaincy. That’s usually Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) plus one other, which has generally served me well in the past and is something I’ll do again next season.

In terms of gambles, balance is key. I certainly wouldn’t load up on them, but don’t have a problem starting with two or three in my initial squad. For every player who takes a little longer to acclimatise to the Premier League, there is always another who will hit the ground running, like Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m).

I suppose the newly-promoted players are classified as gambles, too, but I don’t necessarily see it like this. They are mostly budget picks, and if you adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy like most preach, it’s often too late. Capitalising on these teams is all about ensuring you have them for that first top-flight game in front of the fans, and sometimes before that initial momentum wears off.

I started with Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Luke Ayling (£4.5m) in 2020/21; before that, it was Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and John Lundstram in 2019/20. I suspect one or two from Brentford will be making an appearance next season, too.

ZOPHAR SAID…

To answer this question, first I must define what I consider a ‘gamble’. Players from promoted teams fit into this category as we do not know how they and their team as a whole will adapt to the Premier League. The jump in standard is massive and we have seen clubs that topped the Championship finish bottom of the Premier League (Norwich comes to mind) the next season.

Transfers from foreign leagues are also a ‘wait and watch’ for me as the physical nature of the Premier League can be a challenge for an overseas asset to get used to. This does depend from player to player though. I went early on the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Eden Hazard as I trusted them to be world-class talents who were already playing at a top level and had no doubts about their ability to cut it in the Premier League.

Thirdly, players from teams under new management would also be classified as a gamble for me. We do not know what sort of philosophy the new manager would like to implement, what his preferred starting line-up would be and who would be their talisman. For example, any Crystal Palace asset would be a massive gamble to start with in my opinion as I simply do not know how they will play under Patrick Vieira after a defence-first approach under Roy Hodgson for many years.

I did break this rule due to my Chelsea bias last season by going with both Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Timo Werner (£9.0m) but usually I like to have no more than one ‘gamble’ in my Gameweek 1 squad. My FPL motto is, ‘better to be late to the party than to turn up early and find out there’s no party at all’. I make sure I set up my initial squad in such a way that I can get the ‘gambles’ with one transfer if they hit the ground running.

No. Meaning a well balanced team full of good players but lacking in premiums is in reality unlikely to do as well in FPL as a team with a couple of premiums and a slightly less good supporting cast. It was not intended as a slight on your managerial acumen at all.

Well said, I agree a premium is needed at least for captaincy. I'm just struggling to decide which one to pick. Salah the obvious choice however I already have triple Liverpool and think Jota is a great budget way in to their attack.
I could maybe swap Mahrez, Son + Cavani for Bruno, Foden + 'nacho.

Trent or Jota or Son or Mahrez (or in fact pretty much everyone in your XI) can haul in any given week but which?
Mo or Kane (if at City) probably a must.

Not sure about it. Would you rotat Lamp/Ayling into the XI? Not sure about Fixtures for a few of those players, ya know, Chilwell included. If you make Raph into ESR you can have Lamp/Ayling cover his GW2 & 3. Ayling can't rotate with Raphinha and Lamptey doesn't have an ideal GW4 to cover one of them. And that's before Mahrez or anyone else misses out. And if Antonio gets injured, you could be looking at selling 3 forwards around GW4-6.

Tbh I’ll likely early WC. I think Mahrez has a good chance of playing the first few games. I would rotate in the 4.5s.

Because of the GW5 (Leeds) and GW7 (Chelsea) fixture swings? I think Leeds and Chelsea will start strongly and don’t want to wait until then to jump on both.

I never plan an early WC. I said I’d likely early WC. That’s based on the 10+ seasons I’ve played this game. Every year I say I’ll keep the WC and every year I end up using it before GW6 lol

Well I gotta plan one of these hypothetical sides, so I can have it saved and decide whether to go with it later!

Captain-wise, I'm not scare to captain TAA. Wasn't he the highest scoring FPL player in the final 19 GWs or something last season?

GW1: TAA/Cavani. (Arsenal are genuine options that week too imo.)
        GW2: City player/TAA/Cavani
        GW3: Cavani/Bamford/DCL
        GW4 : Cavani/DCL/Arsenal
        GW5: TAA/City/Arsenal

Can also sell a City mid for a player up to 10m with one transfer for cpatincy if necessary.

Given that it's a strong possibility we'll see Kane moving to City I thought I'd have a further tinker to see how I'd fit him into my draft:

    Sanchez
    TAA | Coufal | Lamptey
    Salah | Sancho | Raphinha | Buendia | ESR
    Kane | Watkins

    Gunn | Ayling | Reguilon | Obafemi

Reguilon covers ESR's poor fixtures in gw2/3 and Lamptey and Ayling obviously rotate very well with each other. Watkins can easily become Jiminez, Antonio or Wilson when the Villa fixtures take a turn for the worse in gw4 and likewise Buendia can become Bowen or Harrison.

Sancho is a punt and replaces Bruno. If he can return similar points to those we saw from Rashford over the past two seasons (177 and 174) then I think he's worthwhile investing in as one of the main attackers at Utd (which he'll surely be given his high profile signing).

Sorry, why do you think Kane will score more goals and get more assist at City?

He will get less minutes with Peps rotation policy and it's not like he had a bad year last season

I'm not saying that he'll necessarily score more. If I was sure that he'd return 37 goals and assists again this year if he stayed at Spurs I'd have him in my team. However, I do think he can achieve this by moving to City (who create way more opportunities and have been missing a focal point central striker for a couple of seasons), whereas we don't know how Spurs will play under their new manager.

think we're going to see a few drafts like this with Sancho at his price.

3x mids in the 5.5 - 6.5 range is tough, but feels like there will be a few that emerge as viable.

in your instance i might downgrade a defender to a 4.0 and have it in the bank for those midfield slots - moving to find the best (ESR to Barnes for example...Raph/Buendia > 7.0)

    3. Fletch69
      • 5 Years

Reguilon could be a good dark horse under Nuno. Not a bad punt.

I still think it's too early for Sancho. As someone else said, it:s easier to start with Bruno and switch to Sancho if he does well than the other way around

My favourite team so far. It’s not possible to get Bruno salah Kane Trent so I think Sancho for Bruno is the best compromise. Only fear is Bruno without Pogba is electric. I’d switch reguillon for Digne that’s all. I also think Watkins underachieves this season but considering fixtures and your plans definitely worth starting with him. Could consider Harrison over raphinha to unlock 0.5?

Man U has amazing fixtures in general. If I could have 2 nailed attackers from them I would.

Folks worrying about a captain for 1 week only and ditching him for that reason is dumb to me.

Do they really though from an attacking perspective? There’s only 2 games in the first 11 they could haul (Soton an Newcastle). Other ‘easy’ games are deceptive IMO: Leeds, West Ham, villa, wolves, Everton aren’t easy, then they play Leicester, pool and spurs

Yep, from memory, a bit of side by side but also a bit of ASM tucked behind too I think . Think it was pretty often hence his move to a forward this season on fpl.

ASM seemed more dangerous starting wider and coming in to the middle for me, I really rate him.

Broadly speaking, better on the counter than against teams who sit deep. It’s hard to predict patterns with Newcastle and Steve Bruce though. We’ll get hammered by a relegation candidate one week and beat a top 6 team the next. I’d avoid unless you have very steady hands

    Errr… all of a sudden I’m liking Salah-less 4-3-3’s with Kane & Bruno

    Meslier
TAA, Robbo, Shaw, Digne at the back (yeah, yeah, yeah, they’re basically 4 set piece taking midfielders etc etc)

Raphina & Buendia with Bruno in midfield

Bamford & Nacho with Kane up top

    4.5 defender & 2x 4.5 Mids on the bench

0.5 ITB for a rainy day

You could arguably use the 0.5 to turn Bruno into Salah but I have full faith in Bruno again this year - easy 15 goals & 15 assists, and possibly 20 of each if Utd really click

theres 3 most popular premium pairings
      salah/bruno
      salah/kane
      bruno/ kane

i imagine all 3 pairings will muster 450 to 500 points so much of a muchness i think ,having bruno saves 0.5 ,i dont think you will be much worse off with whoever anyone omits...

    Evening all.

Haven't ventured into these comments for months, great to see so many different ideas floating around. I'd drawn up a first draft for the season, which now looks exceptionally template, but that's never a bad thing at the start of the season. Your thoughts please?

    Sanchez / Steele
    TAA / Shaw / Lamptey / Fofana / Ayling
    Salah / Mane / Buendia / Raphinha / Gilmour
    Watkins / DCL / Iheanacho

The plan would be to play a 3-4-3 consistently, playing the £4.5m defender with the best form/fixture as the 11th man.

I figure some won't be too happy seeing both Salah and Mane... that'll like only be for the first two fixtures (Norwich away and Burnley at home) until it's clear which other premiums are putting up numbers.

Goes without saying that this would likely be altered if Kane moves to City.

    1. Fletch69
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 1 month ago

Again, will Kane get any more points at City than he did at Spurs??

He'll play less minutes, so will need to score at a higher rate just to get the same numbers!!

The real question is does this mean Son will spend more time as a central striker....

    Schmeichel
    Shaw TAA Keane
    Sancho Buendia Salah Soucek
    Watkins Toney Calvert-Lewin

    Foster, Raphinha, Coufal, Coady

    .5 ITB

Then probably pop in Son after a game or two for Sancho if Sancho doesn't start well

Not sure about DCL to start. Rodriguez and Benitez don't get on, Siggy is errr "unavailable" and Richarlison is at the Olympics.

Leaves Townsend, Iwobi and Demerai Gray as the attacking mids.

    Henderson 4.0
    TAA Fofana Lamptey 4.0 4.0
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Raphina 4.5
    DCL Watkins Toney

    Thoughts?

    -Henderson could become Sanchez
-Raphina could become Buendia or go cheaper with Sarr and upgrade defence

Villa - El Ghazi if he’s on the pitch, if not, it’s all a bit up in the air to be honest. If I had to guess, I’d say Grealish, but it could easily be Watkins or Buendia.

Watford - Deeney takes them, but if he isn’t involved, whoever won the pen took it last season, so Pedro and Sarr.

Everton, prob Richarlison, but not totally sure. Would prefer it if DCL or Digne stepped up, for FPL reasons.

Probably not to be honest. I remember Rafa at Newcastle and he’d slowly bring players who didn’t get his system into the first 11 even when the fans were screaming for them to be involved. We signed Rondon and Rafa still played Joselu up front for ages until Rondon was ready. Why do you ask, out of interest?

Thanks for your reply mate, I’m asking because I prefer Richarlison to DCL, he might also be on penalties if Sigurdsson is out, he’s 1m cheaper than DCL also and Everton have a good run of fixtures on paper

How many games have people on here watched Sancho play?

    1. Rock n Grohl

Watched a fair bit of Bundesliga and he's a talent for sure. Especially his movement and work he does with his fullbacks regardless of which side he plays on. So expect AWB or Shaw over and underlaps frequently.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

Wrinkle there is that his natural slot is likely on the right given United have options on the left. AWB is improving but he offers much less than Shaw and that could impact Sancho.

    2. Rock n Grohl
      • 16 Years
      5 years, 1 month ago

AWB never got any chance to form an understanding with the player ahead of him on the right last season due to the constant swap of players. Also it's also fair to say that due to this the majority of Utd's attack went down the left side, of which benefited Shaw. With Sancho on the right, as you say, it's very likely to see more play down the right, kinda the reason we bought him. So I'd like to hope AWB can be afforded to be more adventurous and Sancho will help improve that.
