FanTeam €200k winner Josh Wooldridge’s best team reveal for £1m Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

It’s only days until FanTeam’s season-long 2021/22 Premier League Fantasy game gets underway, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for advice on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

Josh is writing for Fantasy Football Scout in the upcoming campaign and, having provided us with some top tips in his first article, he reveals his latest team draft here.

Hi all!

With the Premier League season beginning this coming Friday, it was an easy decision with regards to what to write my FanTeam article on this week.

I am going to do an in-depth analysis on my favourite draft, explaining why I picked each player, and I will even throw in some alternatives on one or two spots that I need a bit more information on.

I hope you enjoy!

Goalkeepers

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m)

This was a tough call for me. I started the summer wanting to pick Dean Henderson (£5.0m), but it looks like he is now going to miss the start of the season. Bachmann has the ability to make lots of saves, in a Watford team that set defensive records in the Championship last season. At such a budget price, I think he has two avenues to points- and will make enough saves, and hopefully keep enough clean sheets, to justify this inclusion.

Ben Foster (£4.0m)

Foster is the natural understudy to Bachmann. I love pairing goalkeepers together from the same team, as long as they cost a combined £8.5m or less. I am confident Foster is second choice at Watford, and trust that he could step in if needed – both for the Hornets and my Fantasy team.

Defenders

.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is such a powerful option on any Fantasy game, providing he is fit and the Liverpool defence looks solid. Whilst last season didn’t show much evidence on the latter, hopefully the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) can help to rectify last year’s defensive woes. Alexander-Arnold missing out on the Euros could be a blessing for Liverpool, who now have their star defender fully rested.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m)

Everton’s poor pre-season form is a slight worry but I always like Digne in Fantasy games, as he has the threat at both ends of the pitch. I think the £5.5m price tag is more than reasonable, and under Rafael Benitez, you would hope that the Toffees defence becomes even more solid. With Gylfi Sigurdsson (and potentially James Rodriguez) potentially out of the picture, Digne may take a larger proportion of set pieces this year, which can only help his FanTeam output.

Joel Veltman (£4.5m)

With many casualties in the Brighton defence and a few additional doubts, Veltman is one of the last men standing for the Seagulls that I am confident is nailed. £4.5m is a fantastic price for an asset from a team with such strong expected defensive numbers as Albion, and whilst the injuries may set them back, my three £4.5m defender picks are chosen with a more long-term strategy in mind.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m)

Ayling was probably the most attacking player in the league last year not to register an attacking return. He was unlucky on several occasions last time out, and I am confident that he will get several this time around. He also rotates perfectly with Veltman, so it makes sense to pick alongside the Brighton man.

Nelson Semedo (£4.5m)

I was slightly worried when I saw that Semedo wasn’t in the Wolves squad over the weekend but it has since come out that he is merely isolating due to contact tracing and will be available for selection for the opening Premier League fixture. Wolves do not have a good first three matches but Gameweeks 4-7 are particularly strong fixtures. With this in mind, I am happy to pick who I deem to be one of Wolves’ most nailed defenders, with some attacking potential as a bonus.

How many players in your first eleven main squad sit more than 20% ownership?

    mine = 9/11
    below 20% = Tsimikas & Benrahma

      Exactly the same here.
My one claim to originality is buying a player on 0.0% who is now up to 0.1%. Needless to say, he won't play!

      Tsimikas - 10%
      Benrahma - 4%
      Pepe - 3%

Feels good having a few but not too many.

      8. Rudiger, Target and Tsimi.

I am worried not having Shaw given he’s over 50%, but want Rudiger for opening week especially.

Maybe I'll get bash here but it feels exciting going without Salah and Trent ... Its a crazy feeling, mixed .. happy, some scary feeling, feels like save my own money. Everything.

Feels like genius ..lol. some will say I'm stupid of course hahahha. But as I want Trent just for two match (not for long) and want to save a transfer to get Kane, so I think I'll let him go. Eitherwise he will broke my structure.

2.0 million is not worth if Liv still not the best defensive unit. Chelsea, City is the best at the moment. Brighton top 3 last season but they seem get down...

Trent get that high price tag when Liv is the most potent and compact defensive unit, not now even VVD is back. If VVD , Trent become the most reliable def unit and I want them for a long term, I'll consider even for double up! This is a game of marathon, not sprint.

    Women on top

    Ings Antonio (Oba)
    Mane Bruno Gundo Barnes Ben10
    Dias Shaw Tsimikas (Maguire Chambers)
    Meslier (Begovic)

    Still have 1.0 ITB.

Honestly, there are about 3 to 4 players I'd change out in that team, else goodluck.

Also. The non-standard way of laying out the team is a bit pointless.

Well i'm not doing RMT here. I have enough for yesterday. I dont care what people think now.. this is my team. And every other managers have their own style of thinking.

If I want, i will ask "is this good?" haha

        Anyway, thanks.

RMT folks. I'm BB in GW1.

    Sanchez - Bachmann
    TAA - Tsi - Rudiger - Amartey - Veltman
    Salah - Bruno - Benrahma - Tella - Ziyech
    Antonio - Toney - Ings

Swapped out Greenwood and ShW for the Chelsea boys, based on GW1 opposition. GTG?

Havertz is their 10 right? I'm not sure if Lukaku will be ready for GW1 at this rate either.

Punting on the Dele pick but I think Nuno will go with him from the start and if he can get back to where he was before Mourinho arrived he could be an absolute bargain!

Dele not for me from the start. Maybe he will prove himself, but I feel he’s an early transfer out. I’d even just prefer starting Coufal on your bench for the opening week anyway so why have him then. Unless you really feel he’s going to suddenly dominate again of course.

I think Dele has a lot to prove after not playing very much football over the last few seasons and now is his chance under a new manager. The question is of course what are we going to get from Spurs under Nuno!

Going with Dele surley justifies your username. Tbh not sure about Spurs at all this season, also Kane should stay but you never know how are things in his head...other then that all good.

I like a punt at the start of the season to make it interesting, no point going template all the time 🙂 Can always transfer out to a Benrahama, Smith-Rowe, Raphina, Harrison, Buendia...loads of decent options around 6.5m.

The 6.5m price tag is tempting enough for me to take the risk and get him from the start of the season. Maybe I'm completely wrong and he'll flop, but we all know he is a quality footballer. It just depends on how Spurs are going to play under Nuno.

Look, Mane is going to score bunches, but teams built around him are sure to wither and die, either due to no Salah or being money-f$#%ked with both. I think it’s about figuring out how to capture his hauls in short bunches, upside chasing-like

Thoughts on bench boosting gw 1? Seems we’ve been given a gift with 2 4.0 defenders with great fixtures for the first gw and think this might be the best way to capitalize on it. BB always seems to be a bit of a pain and let down during the dgws . For the 8th attacker you could get tella/smith rowe for a little bit more than a fodder. There’s no great 4.5 gk options unfortunately. Pickford and Leno have good fixtures but I’m not sure if they’d be worth the extra .5

Even if you can guess 15/15 who are starting week 1 (which you can’t), they are all SGWs at best and more likely to be subbed than later in the season regardless of who they are.

I’m totally ok with everyone else doing this.

      1. Bad Kompany
        • 6 Years

I don't think many are doing this at all. I've barely seen it mentioned. I also don't think that it will be as difficult as some think it is. Some players will be out due to involvement in international competitions, which will making predicting some teams' lineups easier.

They will all just be sgw, but I can pick ones that have great fixtures. In dgws, they often have at least one bad fixture and most don't start both games.

Normally for bbing, they will wc right before the dgw, but I don't think this is the best way to use it, especially since it's at the very end of the season normally. The only other way to have a good bb is by taking hits, which are rarely worth it. I will also wc soon after, which will mean money won't sit on my bench for long.

Yeah but then you aren’t “saving” a WC by BBing now and then WCing anyway. You are just locking yourself into doing it with less information and more rotation and most importantly no doubles

Also don’t agree that Dgw fixtures aren’t both good; plenty of players with 2 good fixtures to target each time.

There are many comments on here about it, everyone thinks they’ve cracked the code.. we will see who is still around after gwk6.

You are BBing Tella (when he may not play), tsimkas (when he may not play), amarty (when he may not play) and a poor (by your own admission) GK

What is the advantage? No way you outscore the Bb avg at the end of the year

          1. Bad Kompany
            • 6 Years

I'd likely wc around the same time anyway. I've always done better when I've wc early compared to when I've saved it. There are also some great fixture swings and some players will be arriving from international tournaments or transfers.

I'd be surprised if the 4.0s don't play. I currently have Smith Rowe over Tella although Tella does interest me a bit. The gk is a fair point.

Last year the best bench I had included a couple of Leeds against Brighton and a couple of dgw players, one of whom only played once while the other got 1 in his second game. Those who do have 2 good fixtures would be in my starting lineup. The only times I've seen someone have a great bench for a dgw is when they took hits or used wc in the weeks leading up to the dgw

That’s the play, either dead end a team into BB and then WC, or I prefer WC before and balance between games and upcoming fixtures. I just think the options are endless; heck last year we got a TGW

Dead ending a team into wc wouldn't work for me as I always have a non-playing 8th attacker and gk. Would require transfers to upgrade them, which would either require hits or ignoring the weeks leading up to the dgw. The wc before is what I've done in the past. It works alright, but it means either wcing late or having a lot of money stuck on your bench

Just have to plan your transfers into or out of it. A lot of times, transfers will serve both purposes leading up to the WC and if they don’t, you can always balance the team with that under consideration. I never to try max games, 10 extra is the sweet spot for me (and 5 singles)

Balance the wc team that is…

Just saying … there are always options. Unless you blow it wk1

                      I wouldn't call it blowing it 😉

A strong start means you at least avoid the need to feel you need to make up ground, which often leads to bad differentials.

There are loads of options. How good the options will be will be partly determined by how the dgws and bgws end up, which is impossible to know until way later

Sometimes the transfers look good both before and sometimes they don't. I'm sure we can both think of many examples of each.

The biggest problem for me is the extra gk and 8th attacker. I won't be rotating gks or attackers, so whoever I get will just sit on my bench. It isn't as big as a problem this way as I'm not using transfers on it (for wc after bb strategy) and I'm not stuck with them for a long time or forced to wc very late strategy (for wc before strategy).

I also think the bench in bb is very overrated. If you're not trying to max out games and have 5 sgw players on your bench, then won't your bench be filled with sgw players just like it would be in gw 1?

I do thing I might be underestimating the chances of surprises in gw 1 lineups. Although I think the players I've named are all likely to start the teams are not settled like they will be as we get into the season, so there could be some surprises

                      To each their own.

I think I’m reacting to all the people saying BB isn’t worth it or that it ruins your squad, blah blah blah. It was such a narrative last year and I think it’s anecdotal at best.

Even if you have 5 sgw, you still get 10 extra games (20-50 extra points) than using it wk 1.

I still think it’s the best Chip

How do you get 10 extra games? You would have 10 dgw players in that gw anyway even without bb. Isn't it only your bench that you count?

                        I’m saying for your BB

Usually measure the Bb based on total above the average score for the week. It would have fewer over other WC or BBs, but your non WC non BB team would get wholloped in that week and have to make it up by points gained in wk 1

Cheers! Still thinking it over but am leaning towards it. Good luck this season mate! 🙂

More leaving this for myself to revisit later to help decide, but feel free to leave any points I forget, especially for the bb in dgw strategy.

                        BB gw 1:
con: some uncertainty over who will start since it's the first competitive game of season and some are returning late
pro: multiple 4.0 options with great gw 1 fixtures who will likely soon lose their place
pro: can wc soon after so aren't stuck with money on bench
con: forced to wc early (although I think most will likely do this anyway)
pro: you can make sure all of the players on the bench have good fixtures while still preparing your team for the following gws (can plan and attack early fixtures)
con: only 1 game for those on bench
pro: more options on when to use 2nd wc as don't have to worry about bb (I don't like using it super late, but oftentimes that's when the dgws are for bb)
pro: can put all of money in starting 11 for dgws
pro: can use different chip in dgws (tc or fh)

                        BB in dgw:
pro: can bb players who play twice
con: this can be hard to do without weakening team because your bench consists of your worst players that gw and it's could be difficult to find 15 good players that gw and not hurt your team other gws (although this all depends on how the dgws turn out)
pro: more likely to know who will start
con: will be worries of players being rotating and only starting one game (although coming on as a sub is better than not having another game)
con: to have a good bb will have to either make transfers to dead end into it (often miss players with good fixtures before dgw) or wc for it which means either holding for a long time or having to have money on your bench for a long time
pro: allows you to really attack the dgws and having a playing bench could help with other dgws or bgws (although fh could make it not matter, it all depends on how the doubles fall)

Not really. It looks quite good. Defense a bit weak for my liking. Would want to try to upgrade amartey, so you don't have to play ayling and white against Everton in gws 2 and 3 but that's not too bad of a fixture

He doesn't have anything in the bank. If getting Mahrez better to get from the start. Its not like you can guarantee Havertz outscores Mahrez in the first GW or even Son for that instance.

    Morning

Really stuck as to what to start with either 4-42 or 3-5-2

4-4-2 lets me get Son in but on the basis of having Toney as one of the strikers. 3-5-2 I would have Ings and Antonio

    A. Benrahma | Raph | Salah | Barnes | Bruno
    B. Barnes | Salah | Son | Bruno

Is Son a must have do you think, I had him most of last season and really like him.

    Thanks

I'm guessing but if your back 3 is TAA, Shaw & Tsimikas then I don't understand why you would need Coufal.
You're fielding Tsimikas like you would be Robertson so a 4.5 is fine.

You can't pass up on a way into 'pool's defence at 4.0 IMO.
Robertson's injury is more severe than that.

I assume you mean proper Andy, but I've got a route to own Tsimi comfortably. In rotation with Ayling and White, Tsimi just needs to be available GW1-2; after that Ayling and White rotate with easy fixtures. My other defenders are of course TAA and Shaw, nailed every week. As such, there's no need to use a transfer on Tsimi until I wildcard at leisure.

Yeah “When you have a 4.0 way into Liverpool defense, you just can’t pass that up “ as I recall

Proper Andy, I like that lol

That's fine, by picking Tsimikas you are preparing for a trade. We can use them.

TAA | Shaw | Veltman (Ayling) (Tsimikas)

It's a toss up. I'd try to find the extra .5. Think it's worth it. I said B earlier when it was with Antonio. I prefer Antonio but think I'd still go B.

Antonio is in anyways. I agree the 0.5 if worth it. Allows me to easily move up to Bamford or DCL if needed. Thank you!

Guardiola on Jack Grealish: "He’s not ready to start at all. He was one week training alone but he’ll travel with us tomorrow to settle in the team and with meetings. He’ll be on the bench. After, we will see what happens but in the beginning? No way."

So most on here,Twitter and YouTube are aligned that the best picks in each position are :
    Sanchez xx
    TAA Shaw xx xx xx
    Salah Bruno xx xx xx
    Antonio Ings xx

That's 7 of your starters. How would you want to structure the ready of your team to get 4 more starters?

    A. Tsimikas Veltman Son Barnes
    B. Ayling Raphinha Barnes Jota
    C. Some other combination?

    Morning all

    Hopefully I’m g2g

    Sanchez
    Alexander-Arnold Shaw Tsimikas
    Salah(c) Fernandes Greenwood Barnes
    Ings Antonio Toney

    Foster Whiite Gilmour Amartey
    0.5m

Have £0.5m in the bank so could upgrade Tsim to £4.5m and replace Jota for Greenwood.

    Cheers for any input
