In our latest Premium Members article, regular Scout contributor Statto99 examines which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets could be quick out of the blocks in 2021/22.

ATTACKERS

Injured Jota out for the season as Mane returns to Liverpool starting XI

The criteria for making our list of attacking ‘early risers’ is this:

  • Only the first four Gameweeks considered regardless of circumstances
  • Scored two or more goals
  • Made three or more goal contributions (including ‘Fantasy’ assists)

For the opening Gameweeks of 2020/21 those criteria produced a list of 31 attacking players, the top of which looks like this:

The jet-propelled start made by Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) is now etched into FPL folklore, but not so many remember Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) outpacing Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) or Neil Maupay‘s (£6.5m) goal-a-game start for a Brighton and Hove Albion side that would soon find it desperately hard to hit the back of the net.

Jorginho (£6.0m) benefitted from the early flurry of penalties being awarded in a hyper-sensitive refereeing environment while the jury was still out on whether Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) could sustain this kind of form so soon after stepping up from the Championship.

If you’d managed to select a few of these in your starting squad, or taken a judicious hit here and there to grab them early, you were probably setting the pace in your mini-leagues, but there was a steady cast of performers just below this top group who were also putting significant points on the board:

Aston Villa and Manchester United were among the teams to miss Gameweek 1 because of commitments late into the previous, over-running season, but Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) still managed to get a couple of goals and an assist in his opening three fixtures while no fewer than three Villa players joined him in the early riser ranks as the exhilarating 7-2 home demolition of Liverpool and a pair of victories over promoted Fulham and Sheffield United generated plenty of attacking spoils to share around.

A couple of defenders also qualified under the attacking criteria with a pair of set-piece goals for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma (£5.5m) and some rampaging forward runs by Timothy Castagne (£5.5m) bringing Leicester City early returns.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

What you can’t fail to notice is the eclectic mix of attacking early risers in 2020/21 ranging from celebrated FPL names like Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) to promoted talent and unsung heroes in Callum Robinson and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m).

Overall, 31 midfielders and forwards qualified for the early riser list for last season, but what could be useful to this year’s FPL managers is knowing whether there are any patterns that emerge when you extend the scope back to earlier campaigns. If you take the most recent three seasons there are never fewer than 25 attacking early risers:

2020/212019/202018/19
Qualifying “early riser”
FPL attackers
312625

This is good news for FPL managers as it demonstrates that every season there are about four times more attacking options than are needed for an FPL squad that return significantly in the opening Gameweeks and, as we have seen, they come at a range of price points.

Even more helpfully, five ‘banker’ attackers have achieved the required standard in each of the last three seasons. The £12.0+m trio of Salah, Kane and Mané will surprise nobody by their inclusion, but few would easily guess the identity of the other two.

    Bottomed

    Dull question

Best (or I guess least worst) 4.5m striker. Had Obafemi but sounds like he's off, obviously not expecting much and will be 3rd sub but would be nice to find someone that might get the odd few mins here and there.

A lot of people say Chilwell is a good option, but isn't he a rotation risk with Alonso(played 46% of minutes in pre-season)?

Chilwell was dropped for him for a period last season..

    1. vova
      • 15 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Chilwell is a good option long term but he hasn't played in the preseason due to Euros. Chilwell will be the first choice through out the season but Tuchel does like to rotate quite a bit.

    2. amitmishr
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

I think despite a benching every 3/4 games, chilwell will score heavily as he is involved in the goals and the defence is going to be really solid. Investment in city and chelsea players is always with that benching risk

Small change, but Sanchez's backup is 4.0 (Steele) in case Sanchez is injured or inexplicably benched. Then swap Bissouma out with Gilmour/Brownhill

A.Armstrong - the magic bean! Allows power three midfield with Son. Question is, is downgrading Shaw to Coufal and Raphina/ Benrahma to ESR/Mbuena worth it to accommodate Son?

If you can get by with your other three defenders, I'd say just as well get him from the off and save a precious transfer (unless planning for early wildcard anyway)

Tsmikis/White/Ayling seems pretty much perfect for the 3rd defender slot. you have good fixtures throughout and no transfers need to be made in that area until the wildcard

I am rotating him with Targett early on. Think they will keep a clean sheet vs Brentford.

      GW 1: White @ bre
      GW 2: Targett v NEW
      GW 3: Targett v BRE
GW 4: White v NOR (Targett potentially out)

He is in most drafts, so sounds reasonable. Arsenal transfers are all over the place, and I expect quite a few changes before dust settles. Long term he is good, but would be even better for tierney

Just took Toney out my team - Ings, Antonio and DCL just have great fixtures and Toney is unproven at this level so out he goes.

Dcl, the service without richarlison and possibly James, plus a new manager is a risk. Plus he too carried an injury a few days back

    Strategy question...

Pretty much every team on here has a non-playing 4.0m GK in their team (Steele or Foster).

Are the days of having two playing GK's in your squad (e.g. two 4.5m) which you can rotate now dead?

not dead but many have experienced having the wrong keeper getting 10 points on the bench whilst your choice gets 0 or 1 ,can send you dippy ...

It works when u have combo of fixtures that are top6 away (then u bench them). Otherwise its top much a lucky shot

Looks good. Not a fan of digne though as Everton are without their settled frontmen right now and you don't buy digne for defensive solidity. Coufal/stones/Cresswell/ Shaw probably better

    1) Havertz and £0.5m (to Mahrez GW2)
    2) Start with Mahrez

Not a fan of planning transfers so B but Havertz is a good punt

    Currently I have Greenwood + Obafemi in a 4-4-2.

Is Antionio and a Gilmour better in 4-3-3?

Antonio carries a slightly bigger goal threat and is nailed on. Coupled with a playing 4.5m mid may have an advantage.

However, I went for a 7.5m mid over Antonio because of the plethora of upgrade and downgrade options in midfield between the 8-6m range.
With Antonio there's only Wilson and perhaps Nacho. Others aren't tempting enough.

    What do I do?

Note: Have Bruno(Utd cover), Ings and Toney already.

    Thanks.
