BRENTFORD 2-0 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Sergi Canós (£5.5m), Christian Nørgaard (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m)
  • Bonus points: Canós x3, Pinnock x2, Raya x1

Newly promoted Brentford enjoyed a dream start to Premier League life as they deservedly beat Arsenal 2-0 to kick off the new season.

Sergi Canós (£5.5m) fired the Bees into the lead via an Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) assist for the opener, before Christian Nørgaard (£5.0m) headed home from close-range in the second half.

It may be early days for Thomas Frank’s side, but the result and nature of the performance suggest that this season can be more than just a battle against relegation.

MBEUMO V TONEY

Though most of the Fantasy discussion during pre-season was focused around talisman Ivan Toney (£6.5m), it was team-mate and out-of-position midfielder Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) who carried most of Brentford’s attacking threat on the night.

The 22-year-old was the most advanced of all Bees players, often operating on the shoulder of the last defender, and he was unfortunate not to have returned having come close to scoring on a couple of occasions.

Interestingly, it was Toney who found himself deeper in Thomas Frank’s 3-5-2, tasked with bringing others into play. However, we should point out that he was heavily involved and perhaps unfortunate not to pick up an assist during the 90 minutes, though the fact he didn’t register a single goal attempt is perhaps a little concerning for his owners.

Canos actually had a better minutes-per-chance average than the 31-goal striker last season (albeit with many efforts coming from distance) and he topped the shot count for Brentford on Friday, also taking both of the Bees’ corners.

Defensively, the backline did look vulnerable at times, though the performance of David Raya (£4.5m) was encouraging as he made several crucial stops and as a result collected a bonus point.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said:

“I think the players today were amazing, they ran themselves to the ground, played with intensity, they were brave and pressed high constantly. On set-pieces I thought we were better, that’s why we did long throws and at times we could go high and knew that we could win the ball and create chances.

Ivan (Toney) has an unbelievable character and mentality and he has such a presence on the pitch. How many duels he wins… he can link-up and press for the team. He is very important to us. Bryan (Mbuemo) did a good job of stretching them, of going one-v-one and with his pace he is a big threat.”

SMITH ROWE, TIERNEY CATCH EYE

On a frustrating evening for Arsenal in which they looked short of ideas, Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) were the only real bright sparks.

The Gunners no. 10 pulled the strings from deeper areas, regularly breaking forward into the final third, while team-mate Tierney (no. 3, below) was one of the Gunners most advanced players and finished the match with 52 final-third touches, 11 crosses and six created chances – all game-high totals.

Arsenal’s average position map vs Brentford

However, no one at Arsenal was able to get on the end of those crosses, which highlighted just how much they missed forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.0m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), who were both struck down by illness earlier in the day.

On a possible Gameweek 2 return for the duo, Arteta said:

“I can’t change that. We knew that before the game. I don’t know (if they’ll be available for the next game.”

For new signing Ben White (£4.5m), it was a night to forget as he was bullied by Toney throughout, and was part of the failed attempt to defend the throw-in that led to Brentford’s second goal.

Brentford XI: Raya, Ajer (Bech Sorensen 71), Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Onyeka (Bidstrup 80), Norgaard, Janelt, Henry, Mbeumo (Forss 86), Toney

Arsenal XI: Leno, Chambers (Tavares 81), White, Mari, Tierney, Sambi Lokonga, Xhaka, Pepe, Smith Rowe, Martinelli (Nelson 71), Balogun (Saka 59)

How come Digne fell out of so many teams in the last week? Kinda feel like I fell asleep on the bus, missed my stop and just woke up alone on bit on a Friday night cold and confused!

Was it that pre-season game vs utd or something else? My logic on him is that pre-season is for fitness and he has a good run of fixtures and the manager knows how to get a team defensively going and is pragmatic enough that he will play to the strength of the team which is crosses onto the head of DCL! Not expecting massive returns, but I'd be surprised if he is not on par with Shaw who I think whilst I own him, is a bit mad that half the game is on as well as he could improve, but isn't historically a great FPL record.

I don't really understand this logic for Digne though. For any forwards or mids I agree with the reservation, but if anything Rafa's ethos will promote some more CS.

You may be right there just want to see if his attacking threat is nullified as there are players in same price bracket who will get cs and attacking returns

My thinking is definitely if Everton is in a tough spot, Rafa will double down on the defense and try to eek out a few 1-0 wins and the like. Which for a defensive FPL option is fine and Digne may be involved in the few attacking returns.

They could be crap of course, but I seem to recall similar concerns when he took over Chelsea. He ain't a bad manager though, even if some dislike the style!

Didn’t look great against Utd where 70% of the players were playing their 1st minutes in preseason

Of course it’s kind of irrelevant but it certainly made me have second thoughts

The fact DCL is in the mix boosts him already

Digne isnt bought just for CS so its entirely relevant. Holgate is the only CS Everton option.

Everton lost 5 players to COVID-19 and Goodison may take time to gell.

They were spluttering at the end of last season under the previous management too.

      - Not being on set pieces.
      - DCL and Richarlison possibly being out.
      - The situation with James Rodriguez.
      - Jordan Pickford.
      - Fixtures look good on paper but many don't expect a CS against Leeds and Brighton
      - Digne doesn't have a great historic record either. ( 120 points over the season despite playing a lot and getting assists)

This. They have the worst starting keeper in the league and not very good defenders. Digne, while decent when attacking, is also not very good when defending and loves an "orange card" tackle. Wait and see for me how they will look under Rafa.

        He takes some corners.
DCL and Richi are not out.
Not sure how James affects Digne.
Pickford has been brilliant this year.
        Decent fixtures.
Agreed - lack of CS last year. Hopefully that will improve.

        Just saying.

        1. He is still on a lot of set pieces
        2. Atleast 1 of the two or both should start
        3. James out really has no correlation with Digne tbh
        4. He has a good run for around 6 games. Perfect price point to swap to a chelsea/city defender when the clouds clear
        5. He has a great record when fit and in form and hopefully benitez means clean sheet will finally come too.

He isn't the greatest fpl player in that world.. But well worth the risk for the first 6 games.

Posted without completing my thought process. James being out gives Digne higher pecking order on set pieces since they only have siggy to take them. Benitez is a wildcard.. If he improves their defense then 5.5 is a snip. If he makes them worst overall then a swap to stones/maguire/rudiger it is. Good risk/reward here. Bertrand is another who I was eyeing but chose Digne to start with due to Southampton at home. Let's see how it goes.

People placed a lot of weight on the Man Utd game.

But with James and Siggy out and DCL and Richarlison fit, then I think Digne has some upside this GW.

Everton are fundamentally an average PL team. They will score about 50 goals and let in about 50 goals. So I would not expect Digne to match Shaw, but I could see him doing well over some periods of favourable fixtures.

Basically this. And we have to add all those concerns mentioned here. He didn't have all the set pieces as was expected. And he is also capable to get RC (haven't forgotten, I got his negative pts once). So as they had in Black Box lessons learned, there was mention to avoid teams with transition. So for me there were too many warning signs to take the gamble with him. Shaw at 5.5 or Stones later at same price are probably safer bets.

Lot of knee jerk reactions on Toneys performance, first game of the season, he looked decent and tried to make things happen. I will be keeping him for the foreseeable as I think he will more then justify his price tag.

This is a bit of a straw man argument - e.g. I can see a case for saying Mbeumo, who is a million cheaper and listed as a mid, might be a better choice than Toney if you want to take someone from Brentford. To me it was very obvious that Brentford set up tactically last night to have Mbeumo as the most advanced player and use his pace to stretch Arsenal's defence.

This is why I hate statistics in football. You can bend them any way you want.
A Toney seller would say, HE DIDN'T EVEN TAKE A SHOT.
Whereas you are portraying the same stat as : ' He didn't get any chances, if he did he would have scored '

      Solid team!

Don't see the appeal in Jota tbh. Firmino looked good in preseason, so he won't be far off a start. Mane Firmino Salah still the preferred front 3 surely?

Love Gundog. Have him myself. I think he's a top differential. City's system means the 8s are the ones getting forwards, with the fullbacks coming narrow, so I think Gundog will do well.

Just tired I think. That happened at the end of his first season too.

I think he's a good captain for GWs 3 and 4, plus the good fixtures surrounding should inflate his returns and make him good value.

Could someone help me with a rules question please? I run a mini league with cash prizes for manager of the month. Most points in that month. I’m sure it’s always been if a game week runs over 2 months, main FF site count all the points for that round in the month the gameweek started in. Is that still the case when you use the drop down for certain months?
For example gameweek 14 there are some matches November 30th and some December 1st, would all points be counted in the November total when using month drop down on the site?
    Thanks in advance

Does Lukaku up top makes Havertz a better pick or vice versa? Think at 3.0 less, Havertz can be better value.

    Thoughts?

I think better option if he starts which I think he will. Lukaku will attract the attention of CBs allowing Havertz to exploit the spaces

Exactly. Think Havertz would be both among goals and assist. Can see Havertz being the Hazard of yester years.

It’s funny how you guys are trying to convince yourselves, Lukaku will be a goal scoring machine period. That’s what he was brought in for lol
Chelsea didn’t pay that much for him so he can come in and just do what Werner already does

Depends on whether he starts. Personally would prefer to see Chelsea play 3-4-3 as follows, with Havertz as backup to Lukaku.

      Mendy
      Azpi Silva Rudiger
      James Jorginho Kante Chilwell
      Mount Werner
      Lukaku

Just think Havertz makes that team stronger. But definitely need to see how Tuchel plays his roulette.

3 attacking slots at Chelsea; Lukaku and Mount should be nailed, so that leaves just one slot for Havertz, Werner, Pulisic, and Ziyech to fight over.

I think it makes Havertz much worse because he might not play some games now.

Interesting, I would be surprised if Havertz gets more rotated especially after his performances at CL and SC. Think he can form a deadly partnership with Kaku.

I think it will depend on tactics and Werner might become the flat track bully rather than Havertz

I think Tuchel might prefer Werner's pace in some games.

Need to see what Tuchel intends for havertz first

At this point we have a situation where he's only started him in 7 of 19 league games, and 11 of the last 20 in all comps

He has rotated him for some massive cup matches too (Madrid champs lge, City FA Cup, FA Cup final etc)

Need to see him starting 5 of the first 6 league games before progressing onto whether he's a good pick or not for GW7

      1. Thanos

That's true of last season. Kaku is better finisher than Werner and he would need a strong attack minded partner and can see Havertz as the perfect pick for that.

But I agree that it's a wait and watch for now. Just too much talent at disposal for Tuchel. Maybe fantasy wise not a great thing as points get shared among many.

ZERO goal attempts from Toney last night.

Is he this season's Mitro (who at least had lots of headed goal attempts)?

Didn't see the game, but from the highlights it looked like Arsenal played a high line, right? Looked end to end. I think that favours someone like Mbeumo, who can get in behind with pace.

I think Toney will thrive against the deeper defences.

      1. Ginkapo FPL

Toney was clearly asked to track back and was crowded out by Arsenal. The only decent defending they did was on him, ignored Mbuemo

He still could have double returned on another night with the assist for Mbuemo, the ghost assist for norgaard, and Mbuemo not picking him out when he shot wide instead

And I noticed he did make several darts across both white & Mari gambling on crosses that never came in

That's the first time I've seen him play 90 mind & was very impressed - he definitely has a football brain too go with the ridiculous power & aerial ability

Fair point. I need to see MOTD tonight to see if he had any near misses that wouldn't register in the stats.

You might not even get that much from MOTD depending on what way they cut it - there’s no substitute for just watching the guy (and the team) for 90 mins

Stats are even harder to discern anything of value from over 90 mins

No, he didn't really play as a striker last night, he was all over the pitch holding the ball up, winning aerial duels and putting in tackles and blocks even. Even then he still put Mbeumo through with a nice flick for a decent chance. Brentford are missing a few players and seems like Frank wanted him to drop deep for a different role last night but he do thar every week. I don't have him even with no shots his performance made me consider him more.

Any decent FPL striker needs a high volume of goal attempts. Trust me on this. If he doesn't start shooting soon, he needs to go.

Stating the obvious - but the best thing that can happen for Toney and Brentford is 3 points against palace to take the pressure off them & allow them relax into the season a bit - even if Toney isn’t involved again

If they’re sitting on 6 points after two games, “only“ needing another 30 or so points from their next 36 games they can only get better - and they were already great last night

Frank can easily go through the video analysis with them on Monday and point out where Toney made the runs that weren’t found, that’s very easy to fix once they can relax a bit more

Thoroughly enjoyed watching them & consider me a new honorary Brentford (and Frank, and Toney) fan

They didn't just win a game; they were entertaining. I can see a 'second-favourite team' syndrome settling is pretty quickly.

Yup - Frank comes across as a complete legend too

One of (if not *THE*) highlights of the game was his very deliberate gee’ing up of the crowd at after Pinnock repeatedly physically dominated/(made an absolute idiot out of) Tavares shortly after he came on

He just seems very tuned into how to build & capitalise on momentum, so important for a newly promoted side

Maybe he plays differently against lower half teams like Palace next week but if he plays deep like he did here then he's not gonna be worth it for fpl no matter how good his link up play is. Also it's not like the Arsenal team was any good so people saying Brentford looked good doesn't matter much while facing such a shoddy defence and an attack filled with 20 year olds.

Having said that I don't expect him to play like this against Palace so we'll find out if he's worth it next week.
