Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are faced with a tough captaincy decision for Gameweek 2.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) go head-to-head again after huge opening-day hauls, but there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining too, including Sadio Mané (£12.0m), Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m).

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 2 Captain Poll, before then analysing the leading candidates, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Unsurprisingly, Salah has dominated the vote so far.

The Egyptian midfielder, who produced a goal and two assists last time out, has gained 63.4% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Fernandes currently in second place, backed by 19.79%.

Mahrez occupies third place with 2.88% of votes, with the top-five list completed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Mane, with 2.3% and 1.54% respectively.

MOHAMED SALAH AND SADIO MANE

This latest splurge by Arsenal reminds me of that spending spree that Wenger went on back in 2001. Francis Jeffers, Richard Wright (back up to Seaman, similar to Ramsdale-Leno), Sol Campbell, Junichi Inamoto and Gio Van Bronckhorst. Only Gio and Sol you could argue were the best signings out of those. Ben White, Martin Ødegaard and potentially Aaron Ramsdale - not inspiring in my opinion. The former two have got potential but Arsenal are surely signing a Championship level goalkeeper at best...

This. Letting Martinez go was the biggest mistake they have made in recent times.

Ramsdale is 23. Alisson, Ederson, Mendy were nowhere to be seen at 23. The backlash for the signing is a bit harsh.

They're signing young and hopefully malleable to Arteta's mould

In my opinion Odegaard is a good transfer, especially that they needed creativity upfront. Ramsdale is not that bad, but you could argue about the point of spending 30m on a reserve goalkeeper. Generally I would say, that their recruitment is quite uninspiring, imho it's not that bad as people say, but also you could spend the money in a much better way.

What’s surprising is the amount they have spent so far. Inter signed Dumfries for only £14m + add ons. Imagine if Arsenal use Dumfries as right back instead of Chambers who is not naturally a right back.

They need a more experienced centre back to het them back into the champions league but Arteta thinks Ben White is capable of doing that.

Nothing wrong in signing Bonucci, Boateng etc for the experience especially in that position.

They signed Ødegaard too when they could easily have gotten someone better.

Sold Willock, Martinez, then bring in Ramsdale.

Arteta will be sacked soon imo. He is clueless

The ground is even shakier if you start comparing the wages club pay. I’d say Arsenal are very disciplined in this regard.

It’s all good. You wrote a post criticising Arsenal’s recent transfer dealings and some people took issue with the points you were making.

If you’re not happy being challenged don’t write a wind up post.

Wasn't my intention. And I don't think it's a wind up post in the slightest. I can take a challenge. Posts are open for interpretation. Some of the responses have been fair, others not (clears throat).

Arteta is the problem at Arsenal. He has a squad with two players for every position and they don't even have an excuse of playing in Europe impacting their PL performance this season.

Too often Arteta gets tactically outsmarted and doesn't know how to respond. He doesn't have Man City's squad so can't impose Arsenal on the opposition in the same way Man City can. It requires compromise and smart thinking (something a manager like Sean Dyche has) to get the most out of the lesser resources (i.e., players) you have compared to the bigger and similar clubs and, so far, Arteta has been found wanting.

I have seen it too many times with Arteta to now know that he isn't tactically good enough to get more out of Arsenal. Individual player ability is a component of success, but tactics are too (see Bielsa, for example).

      Leno
      Bellerin White Gabriel Tierney
      Partey Lokonga
      Pepe Odegaard Saka
      Aubameyang

      Ramsdale
      Cedric Holding Mari Tavares
      Xhaka Elneny
      Maitland-Niles Smith-Rowe Martinelli
      Lacazette

Nope. They are spending money so he will get another 6 months at least. They think he is Pep, but he isn't. And Arsenal are not Man City in terms of spending power and standard of football. You can't be a mini Man City because you will never get the quality of player to make it work.

No offense intended, but using two transfers on THAT seems completely crazy.
Even if Robbo is back in training they might delay him starting to keep him from int. duty.
Selling Barnes before Norwich could bite you in the *** - HARD.

At some point Greenwood is not guaranteed to start. With Cavani & Martial back in fitness with Sancho up to date he could be benched now and then. Especially if Pogs is favoured more on the flank.

Seems like you're using 2 transfers = 8 points to downgrade a defender and a risky sideways move in midfield.
Surely something better will come up after GW2 had played out.

Best player in the league with less than 3% ownership at home to the worst team in the league. I genuinely think he's the #1 cap option this gw. Should be fit to start after a full week of training.
Don't get too many of these opportunities to climb during a season. High variance play, but I think the upside is worth it. I usually play conservative, but yeah, looks like a "once in a season" opportunity to me.

I don't care too much about Salah's poor record against BUR (I think he's the 2nd best cap option this GW), but they will play a very low block which LIV have struggled with in the past. But crowd being back will likely be huge for LIV ofc.

He might be the best player in the league and at the best team in the league but that doesn't always transfer to FPL returns. 6g 12a last season for a player around 11.5-12m isn't great. Salah spent a lot of games last season looking out of sorts and on the periphery of games for a team that had a pretty mixed season yet ended up with 22g 5a.

Now I do like the bravery to go for this if it's what you think is best mind, I just don't know if KDB will actually pick up the returns his play probably should and his injury history puts me off.

That is the consensus, so I can't argue too much with it. However, I think NOR are extremely weak and expect an absolute thrashing.

I don't have anything negative to say about Salah, I just prefer KDB's upside this gw.

Decent chance of losing 30+ points, so be ready to stomach that 😉 But likely the biggest upside of any transfer you can make all season.

Is there a way to see how many people in an FPL league? Say for example FFS Members, I can see my current rank, but not out of how many players; or at least I don't know how to see total players per league.

I was thinking that. Konate won't immediately displace him. I'm not sure i want to find 3m to replace Tsimi with Robbo, but 1m would be easy enough.

    Play Sanchez or Raya?
Already playing Sarr, but with him taking the potential penalty it feels somewhat safe to start the keeper who potentially saves the potential penalty 😀
Raya on the other hand could be a great differential with all out teams very much identical?

    Raya/Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - Tsimikas
    Salah - Bruno (C) - Barnes - Sarr
    Ings - Antonio - Toney

    (Sanchez/Raya - Targett - ESR - Amartey)

I picked Shaw for the same reason even though it’s only 1 gw so far, I was actually set on Alonso/ Pereira at least for gw 1. Guess how that turned out to be...

Picked Webster last season, Brighton’s defence was trash, got me mad... It looks like they have started the new season on that sort of form.

I mean it took them only 4 minutes to concede against Burnley. Comfortably Raya for me even if Palace get a goal I can always count on those save points + I know what Brighton’s defence is like already.

Just my choice from the two. Brighton could still keep a clean sheet but I prefer to be ballsy

Currently benching Benrahma as I think Leicester have the better defense, especially with Vestergaard likely replacing Amartey.

Really torn on this one guys so would appreciate feedback.

I own Veltman and my first sub is White, and team structure means I need to play one of them - I had been planning on saving a transfer, but the Veltman news has complicated that. I have £0.0m in the bank, and importantly I don't own Sanchez. Should I:

    a) Bring in Webster for Veltman as a straight swap to cover potential Sanchez points
    b) Bring in someone else with a theoretically higher points ceiling for the same price (i.e. Ayling) and ignore Sanchez ownership
    c) Bank transfer and play White vs Chelsea

    Cheers

I believe you chose that defensive options because you had a plan. To take a hit for a 4.5 def for White looks like bad management to me. Everton will score Vs Leeds so you need Ayling to score again, and Arteta have shown that he does pretty good Vs TOP teams defensively. And Veltman probably not long term so not a huge problem and to cover Sanchez 2 pointer, what is the point in that?
