Cristiano Ronaldo and the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL

It’s been a whirlwind start to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, with the transfer window mirroring the frenzy that we have seen on the pitch.

So, with that in mind, in this article, I will be sharing my thoughts on what we have seen so far and what lies ahead.

THE RONALDO QUESTION

I can’t start this article without addressing the arrival of one of the greatest players to have ever graced the football pitch – Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

There have been some concerns that the Portuguese powers might be waning but as the table below shows, he has maintained his consistency despite the fact that he turns 37 in February 2022.

Portugal play three games over the international break of which two are World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those happened last night – a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo bag a brace of goals and become the all-time international record goalscorer.

However, he also picked up a late booking, which means that he is suspended and does not need to travel to Azerbaijan for Portugal’s second World Cup qualifier, which is due to take place on Tuesday. As a consequence, he has been released early from international duty.

So, I have full confidence that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer will start Ronaldo in front of a packed Old Trafford in Gameweek 4.

Some have pointed out how Lionel Messi was eased off the bench in his first game at Paris Saint-Germain but Ronaldo’s case is very different. For Messi, it was the first transfer of his career, while Ronaldo is ‘returning home’ and Solsjkaer, in my opinion, is not a manager who is too stringent about players ‘adapting’ to his system. So, who makes way to accommodate Ronaldo in our FPL sides?

      Rudiger most nailed? Christensen is the cheapest, but maybe a rotation risk with Thiago Silva. Might be clearer in a few weeks if Chilwell becomes first choice on the left.

        I have Rudiger, nailed but nearly no attacking threat. Would prefer a more nailed in attacking threat but that rules out Alonso and Chilwell for me. Not relying on Jamestime just yet.

        Yeah looks that way! The weigh up of risking Alonso for the attacking returns against Rudiger's nailed-ness... I suppose at least with a decent bench option then there's little chance of a 1 point cameo for a defender hopefully!

          Especially at home to Villa. It’s a risk but could be a well rewarded one. I’ve got him but have a strong bench just in case he doesn’t play. I’m also thinking with James out Tuchel might not want to replace both in-form full backs.

      Christensen is about as nailed as Rudiger and good value @ 5, but neither make sense compared to James/Chilwell who are similar to the liverpool defenders in their positioning.

          According to this he'll have to isolate, I'm not sure of the veracity of it though. I thought it was because as opposed to Bruno, Ronaldo will be going to the UK for the first time when he gets there, while the likes of Bruno or Bernardo for example went abroad from the UK.       Don't hate that at all. People like to think that Arsenal are terrible, they had a similar run like this last season. I brought in Tierney for a 17 point haul and Saka who went on a returns streak. Then all of a sudden people were talking up Arsenal. Fixtures breed form in my opinion.

      Leeds are 6th worst for shots conceded, 5th worst for shots conceded in the box 1st for most shots on target conceded. Liverpool are top for most shots, and most shots in the box.

      Would hope Salah would be one of the players who gets a return.

      I don’t think so - Villa are a much better team than Newcastle, and with Chelsea having effectively a full team coming back from internationals, it could be a cagey game where defences will be on top, with Villa playing ultra paranoid football setting out to make sure they risk as little as possible - Maybe 1-0 or 2-1 to Chelsea, with goals at a premium

      Whereas over at Old Trafford it could literally be 10-0 with Ronaldo’s return jacking up the atmosphere to unheard-of levels

              Gambling sufficient amounts of cash to terrific winnings on the outcomes of uncertain sporting events at bookies greedy margins generally isn't a great idea - and believing Man Utd have a *better chance* of scoring more goals than Chelsea isn't the same as believing they *definitely will do it* either

              But at a team level, and at this point in time, the bookies totally agree that Man Utd have a better chance of scoring more goals than Chelsea in GW4

              Anytime goalscorer odds haven't been released yet, but will be interesting to see how they price Kaku vs CR7
