Having previously focused mostly on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ midfielders and forwards in his first ‘eye test meets stats’ analysis of Bruno Lage’s troops, Stevie of EyeTestFPL switches attention to the club’s defenders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Wolves, in their 3-4-3/back five system seen below, boast one of the meanest defences in the league so far, conceding only 20 shots inside the box (the fifth lowest) despite some tough early fixtures.

With Lage’s outfit about to embark on a long run of great fixtures until Gameweek 14, we will assess some of the best Wolves defensive options in FPL – particularly from an attacking standpoint.

Nelson Semedo (£4.9M)

During offensive phases, Wolves tend to push both of their full-backs, Marcal (£4.5m) and Nelson Semedo (£4.9m), high up the pitch in a 2-3-5 shape.

Such advanced positioning of the full-backs can occasionally lead to offensive turnovers deep in the opposition half as they are expected to press high up the pitch, especially against the weaker teams.

Compared with Marcal, Semedo is arguably the better player on the ball and possesses considerable dribbling ability, which is the reason why he is often tasked with bigger offensive responsibilities.

Above: Touch heatmaps from our Premium Members Area

Based on his touches over the last two Gameweeks, clearly Semedo (above left) is the player given more freedom to roam forward, making six touches inside the box compared to Marcal’s (above right) one.

There is fluidity in the Wolves frontline. Every time there is a player filling in out wide such as Adama Traore (£6.0m) here, Semedo will use the opportunity to make underlapping runs into the penalty area.

I’m on a WC, should I go with:

    A) 343 with Benrahma (Raphinha if they don’t ban him), Torres, Sarr
    Or
    B) 433 with 3 of 5.5 MID

I’m more towards option B but it seems people pick 343 as their preference WC formation.

SOU is good, but Europa League (Thur) then MUN (Sat) is potentially a concern. Fixtures middling afterwards. Don't think he's a bad pick at all and will tick over, but he has over-performed bit.

Reasons I can think of is to cash in on price rises, lots of good mids in his price range, minutes might get limited or position changed with new signing, and might not want to double up with Antonio.

I have and not looking to ship for now

    5. MJF

      1. He has been lucky to do so well so far.
      2. He has been shifted wide with Fornals #10 and that has reduced his potential. He had a better xG/xA in one game playing #10 than he has totalled in 2 games playing wide left.
      3. Vlasic is a specialist #10 so Benrahma's chances of playing in the position where he is most dangerous have subsequently fallen further.
      4. Europa League now kicks in and that is likely to affect West Ham in general, perhaps not immediately but over a period.

Those are the reasons I would remove him if wildcarding, though it would also be perfectly fine to keep him a few more weeks. He's not bad value but neither is he anywhere near being necessary.

If you wanted a 2nd premium (Salah/Ronaldo) this is an example of the downgrades you'd have to make. When you look at it like this it completely unbalances the squad.

      GK: 6.0
      DEF: 6.0 | 4.9
      MID: 7.6 | 5.4

      vs

      GK: 4.5
      DEF: 4.5 | 4.0
      MID: 12.5 | 4.5

Bit different, would be worried about the rotating players you have in midfield and when Mendy gets benched.

No. Too much money wasted sitting on the bench.

    Good to go?

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw Dias (Tsim Amartey)
    Salah Greenwood Grealish Benrahma Gray
    Ronaldo (C) Antonio (Obafemi)

Nice balance to the team, however, some thoughts.

Tsimikas won't be playing anymore. Amartey is also a doubt going forward. Williams of Norwich should replace one of them. Other options are Duffy or Livramento, if you have the funds.

What are you going to do if Gray goes off the boil? He's scored two goals, is that set to continue?

And is that Obafemi the Southampton player who's joined Swansea?

Sure is haha. No, I'll be definitely getting rid of him and moving both Amartey and Tsim out as well.
My biggest dilemma for this GW was whether to do the WC or not. I'll wait...

Nice, just consider strengthening bench players. You might not gave a playing sub soon.

        Thanks for the input guys.
I'm holding off on the WC as it just doesn't feel right yet. I also wanted to beat the price/rise drops so I did Ings > Ron, and Bruno > Green.

Oh right. I assumed it was a WC team. This is fine then.

Interesting. Was set on A but actually think B could be a good option

Torres put me off A, could go B with Benny and save the money.

True. Although weirdly he’s one of my main reasons to pick B, although I’m wildcarding in part due to pep roulette and owning mahrez so not sure why I’m having another spin with it

Torres IMO will throw to many 1 pointers, he didn’t feature greatly last season and City have so many options, none besides DeB will be certain of minutes.

      A. Shaw has varane and ROnaldo in squad. Firmino out so Jota nailed. DCL back in training

A definitely allows for more flexibility, e.g switching shaw to James/ chilwell when the fixtures improve for chelsea
