Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Tuesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Norwich City winger Milot Rashica (£5.2m) was absent from tonight’s game, having tweaked his groin in training on the run-up to Gameweek 14.

Todd Cantwell (£5.3m) missed out with a Covid-related issue, with local press reports suggesting that he has come into contact with someone with the virus, rather than actually contracted it himself.

Elsewhere, Pascal Struijk (£4.4m) aggravated the injury which prevented him from playing 90 minutes at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, and was removed at half-time, with Marcelo Bielsa saying after the game:

“Same problem as Saturday’s. All of us value he played with the physical limitations he played with. It’s a knack that’s very generous and shows how good a teammate he is to all of us.”

On the suspension front, Ciaran Clark (£4.4m) will now miss Gameweek 15 as a result of his red card, having denied a clear goalscoring opportunity after hauling down Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) after just nine minutes. In better news, Eddie Howe’s side can at least welcome back Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) and Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) on Saturday, who have now served their respective bans.

Joel Ward’s (£4.5m) yellow card means that he’ll now miss the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, while Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) picked up his fourth booking of the season, and is now just one further caution away from suspension.

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

THREE IN FOUR FOR PUKKI BUT NORWICH LACK FINAL-THIRD IDEAS

Despite playing against 10-men for the majority of tonight’s St James’ Park encounter, Norwich City failed to capitalise and lacked any real creativity in the final-third. That’s been a theme throughout their season as the Canaries have managed just eight goals in 14 matches to date. That total includes two penalties, while even over the last four Gameweeks – a period which has seen them take eight points from a possible 12 – they have managed just five big chances.

However, when his team needed him most, Teemu Pukki stepped up with an excellent finish to earn his side a draw. The Finnish international has now netted three goals in his last four appearances, while his total of five for the season is only bettered by Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) and Michail Antonio (£8.1m) amongst all forwards. Despite that, with a tough schedule for the remainder of 2021, the best time to join the ‘Pukki party’ may have passed.

RAPHINHA ON PENALTIES

With Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) missing and Mateusz Klich (£5.4m) substituted at half-time, both of Leeds’ regular penalty takers were off the pitch when Marcelo Bielsa’s side were awarded a late penalty at Elland Road. That was also the case as recently as Gameweek 9, when Rodrigo (£6.3m) converted from the spot against Wolverhampton Wanderers. As a result, many were expecting the Spanish forward to step up again, but instead, and to the surprise of many – not least his 20.1% ownership – it was Raphinha (£6.7m) who took it on and scored to net his sixth goal of the campaign. Notably, the Brazilian wasn’t on the pitch against Wolves, though it remains to be seen just how far up the pecking order he is when everyone is available.

GALLAGHER DEEPER BUT BACK ON SET-PIECES

Despite tonight’s blank, Conor Gallagher put in another lively shift at Elland Road, though he was positioned a little deeper than usual. As a result, he could only muster two penalty box touches, with his one shot in the box and zero created chances well below his usual standards. However, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) dropping to the bench as Patrick Vieira opted for Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.4m) alongside Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.5m) in the engine room, he was at least back on set-pieces, which could be key to his FPL prospects moving forward.

Conor Gallagher’s touch heatmap v Leeds United in Gameweek 14

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 14

Christos Tzolis (£4.8m) ends Tuesday’s action top for shots in the box (3), with a host of players just behind on two.

Notably, that includes Christian Benteke (£6.4m), who appeared off the bench on 68 minutes only to squander a couple of chances, including one at the back post.

In terms of chances created, Newcastle United duo Callum Wilson (£7.4m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.9m), plus Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), recorded three, followed by several Norwich players, as they pushed for an equaliser at St James’ Park.

Would you agree with my list of the top 10 best ever Premier League players? If not, what's yours?

    CR7
    Henry
    Bergkamp
    Beckham
    Cantona
    Scholes

to be honest its hard to argue with any of them - tough that no defensive players in there but what can you do (ferdinand, terry, kompany, vieira, keane, cech, schmeichel for example) - no rooney either

As the highest scorer in the PL, you have to include Shearer, ahead of Aguero.

David Batty needs to be there ahead of Beckham.

I’d have Shearer ahead of Cantona. He has 260 Premier League goals and that’s roughly 50 more than the next guy (Rooney) without looking it up.

I’d also like to see a defender in there, perhaps Rio Ferdinand.

In terms of my favourite player it’s probably Teddy Sheringham. Just thought he was a touch of class. Not saying he ought to be in the top 10 tho!

Cheers Joe. As a Brighton fan, is it worth holding onto Trossard? I have him, brought him in for the Newcastle game in which he delivered, but he's blanked after that. He has however apparently been unlucky not to score. Worth getting a mid from one of the Manchester clubs given their favourable fixture runs. Thinking I might be too late getting onboard the Jota train. Thoughts?

Cheers mate, Sebs comments on form last scoutcast really changed my perspective, can we say the same about xgi since xgi also looks at previous performances.

A player with an xgi of .001 in one game can have an xgi of .80 if he scores the odd goal, so xgi is basically the a bit like point chasing by looking at who got the most goals and assists the past few gameweeks. If that’s true then what would be better predictive stats to look at.

I'd be interested in exploring more detail the idea that there is no such thing as form. For once, I don't agree with Seb's claim in the last Scoutcast and it would be good to dig a bit more into the research and theory that supports this idea.

There is no such thing as form in a game of pure chance - dice; the turn of a card etc., and perhaps there is in theory no such thing as form in a goal-scorer, if all other variables are equal and there are no external factors.

But to my mind there are always external factors. The player converted from a CDM to a centre-forward and starts scoring more goals has form. The player who takes over direct FKs and ups his goal rate has form. We might dismiss these factors as true 'form' because it's quite obvious where it comes from, but I would argue that there are usually underlying factors which might be overlooked or ignored which contribute to a player hitting a patch of form. We can't always see exactly which minute personal and team factors might be affecting his performance, or which unknowable instructions have been given to him or his teammates by his manager.

We must also factor in the detail with which we choose to assess player or team performance. On the macro level we can ignore the actual matches entirely and look purely at player points. Without the context of pitch position, statistics, the 'eye test' etc we can only tell form by a player's points scored and dismiss it as statistical noise. 'Form' is indeed entirely meaningless when looked at in such a crude way. But an FPL manager who actually watches the games can say quite easily if, for example, that player has just started playing out of position and this can help to provide context to the dataset. So one person's random string of numbers can, quite confidently, be called 'form' by somebody else (and vice versa). Certainly there is great deal of randomness in any dataset which can muddy the waters but, to my mind spotting form vs random variation comes down to how good a manager is at understanding why a player does or does not play well over a run of several games.

And I strongly disagree. When throwing darts, there have been times that I simply have known that I overperform and times when nothing goes my way. Strikers do better after scoring the first goal after long draught. They talk about it and I believe it has been studied also.

        1. _Make

I'm not sure whether either of your points contradicts anything I posted to be honest.

My central argument is that in football there is such a thing as form in the sense that past performances can be an indicator of future performances if you know what to look for.

Playing darts there are no other variables and no team mater or manager's tactics which might help or hinder you. Form is much harder to judge, but it's an entirely different sport. You may be playing as part of a team but each individual throw is your own. Pressure management comes into it I'm sure, but in a such a simple game, I completely agree it's hard to judge form as a predictive tool. But darts isn't football.

Regarding strikers doing better after a long goal drought - if that has been proven (and I'm for the sake of argument to assume it has) then doesn't that help to make my point? Past performance (goal in the last game) can be shown to have predictive value (goes in upcoming games)?

Who thinks Antonio starts on the bench against Brighton? I think he either starts vs Brighton or starts vs Chelsea. Will start one game on the bench. As a non owner, I hope its the Chelsea game he starts

        why?
He's started every league game and moyes rested him in the europa league last week just to be fit to play in both games

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 7 months ago

He started every league game that didn't include one midweek, he's notoriously injury prone too. Can see a rest coming

Yeah, and he played 60 mins in the europa game, followed by two 90 mins appearances in the league. That was earlier in the season after a rest I think. Was that after he rested during IB?

I think one of them was, and one of his other EL games this season ones was when he was going to be suspended for the next PL game, so even with playing that game he ended up not playing his next match for around 10 days I think

i've got Kane so Ronaldo is an easy switch. I do think Ronaldo will see some rotation but it might be in the harder games so you get him for the easiest fixtures where he could haul

wow, Bench might be an issue. I think Cancelo, and James in particular will be rotated once. I'd look at Normann to Gilmour if Normann is out for a few weeks. Raph to Bowen, and Kane to Ronaldo in the following weeks look like good options

      1. waltzingmatildas
        • 15 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

Yeah good point. I had Gilmour before my GW9 WC, should have just kept him!

        It would either be:
Raph and Kane to Bowen and Ronaldo (+1.1)
        or
Raph and Kane to Bruno and Antonio (+0.2)
        or
Normann and Kane to Sancho and Antonio (+0.8)

        We'll see how Utd look

wow how on earth has my rank dropped 90k places just from 1 game? Raphinha isnt exactly hugely owned at 20% and Leeds defenders are like 1% owned or something and only 1 and 2 pointers from the palace players. I expected maybe a 20k rank drop but 90k? Jesus.

the top 10k isnt of any relevance. Not for me anyway. There is too much data and statistics that seem to revolve around the top 10k which the vast majority of players will never reach.
