We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a series that will serve non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

JAMES OOP, ALONSO BENCHED

Reece James (£6.2m) was fielded in the centre of midfield by Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday evening, with more natural options in the engine room unavailable or, in Saul Niguez‘s (£5.0m) case, deployed at left wing-back.

“I expect normally N’Golo (Kante), Mateo (Kovacic), Jorgi and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) to start in midfield and they are all out today so we need to be a bit creative and put Reecey in there.

“We knew about the quality in central midfield and wanted to have some physicality. That’s why he helped us there today but the target is to put him back on the wing. For this, we need players back who can play in central midfield.” – Thomas Tuchel

While James played the full 90 minutes, Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) and Kai Havertz (£7.8m) were only thrown on for the final quarter of an hour and Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) was rested altogether.

Chelsea conceded three goals for the second time in five days in a six-goal thriller in Russia.

RONALDO RESTED, WAN-BISSAKA INJURED

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) was absent from the Manchester United squad that faced Young Boys on Wednesday evening – but before any panic sets in, so were all of the other 10 players who started for the Red Devils in Gameweek 15.

Diogo Dalot (£4.4m) is attracting a fair bit of attention in the FPL world as a cheap route into a United defence that has fixtures on their side over the coming months and his prospects of keeping his place at right-back in Gameweek 16 were given a double-boost when firstly he was rested and then his positional rival, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m), was stretchered off on the stroke of full-time.

Despite the serious-looking nature of the injury, however, Wan-Bissaka appears to have come through his last-gasp collision with the hoardings with just “knocks” to show for it.

“He received two knocks, one on the wrist and one on his knee. He’s being treated now in the locker room… but I’m positive that he can, the day after tomorrow, train again and hopefully be part of the team against Norwich.” – Ralf Rangnick on Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Mason Greenwood (£7.2m) impressed up front and scored but his manager said more work was needed on his physicality before he became a “regular”:

“It’s about continuity, he has to develop physically but technically, for his age, he is a great player. My job is to develop him, to make an athlete out of him, and if he manages to do that can be a regular player for this club.” – Ralf Rangnick on Mason Greenwood

TONEY CONFIRMED OUT OF GAMEWEEK 16

There was one official pre-Gameweek 16 press conference held on Wednesday and it involved one of the managers whose team is in action on Friday night.

Anyone with a grasp of Key Stage 1 mathematics would have deduced that Ivan Toney‘s (£6.7m) positive Covid-19 test, which was taken last Friday, would also rule him out of Gameweek 16.

Thomas Frank confirmed that news on Wednesday but refused to rule the striker in or out of Tuesday’s Gameweek 17 clash with Manchester United, which falls outside of the 10-day isolation period – but only just.

COVID HITS SPURS AND LEICESTER

On the subject of Covid, we reported earlier on Wednesday that Brighton v Spurs looks in some danger of being postponed – a scenario that looks increasingly likely now that the Lilywhites’ Europa League match against Rennes is off and that the first-team area of their training ground is out of bounds.

Son Heung-min (£10.4m) was among those not spotted in training.

Leicester v Spurs next Thursday must also be in some doubt, and the Foxes themselves have issues ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Napoli and a Gameweek 16 encounter with Newcastle.

“We’ve had a number of people, staff and players, who haven’t travelled. We’ve had some positive [COVID-19] cases, some are generally not well, so we haven’t taken the risk.

“Certainly, Youri [Tielemans] has travelled. He’s trained very well and he will be available. Ryan Bertrand, who’s been out for a week or so, has travelled as well. They’re both available for the game.

“We will have seven unavailable. [Who they are is] something you’ll see in time. You’ll see in the training tonight the ones who haven’t travelled. It’s been [over the] last few days really. In general, you’re starting to see a few more cases and, for us, it’s always about the health of our players.” – Brendan Rodgers

Flat track bully. Seems to do well in the easier fixtures.

I think Antonio and Bowen's form will flip, as Bowen does a little better in the tough games. I have both just in case, nice run of fixtures for the Hammers...

The plan is to do Son + Gelhardt to Bilva + 7.3 striker this week and Gallagher to Bowen next week.
The other option is to just do Son + Gelhardt to Bilva + Antonio this week and keep Gallagher.

            What do you suggest?

            1. Holmes

In 2nd case, Son-Gelhardt to Silva-Watkins should give cash for Gallagher to Bowen? or Gallagher SP is lower than 6m?

I guess Gundogan plus Watkins over Silva-7.3m in 1st case is also an option.

Watkins leaves me with 0.2 short for the Gallagher to Bowen switch. Want to get Silva. An absolute no for Antonio? I know he has been bad lately. Have watched all the West Ham game and he definitely looks lost right now. But have seen players suddenly snao back into action in the past. Not too sure if Antonio is one of those.

Not an "Absolute No" for Antonio, just that affording him is looking tricky in this situation. Go for Silva-Antonio option, keep Gallagher for next 2-3 games.

Here's my preferred attack combo atm, based on stats, eye test, fixtures and coach's tactics (other players feed them the ball, playing for attacking teams):

                  Salah Jota/Bowen Foden Bilva/Bowen 4.4
                  Ronaldo Benteke King/Dennis

                    4 years, 7 months ago

Based on pure eye test, I will have to agree with you I think. Gelhardt + Son to Benteke + Bilva this week and Gallagher to Bowen in the next gives me this:

                    Salah Jota Bilva Bowen
                    Ronaldo Benteke Dennis

Should serve you well, I think. Transfers can then be strategically spent around Firmino's return, Chelsea's fixture turn + BGWs, DDG, Everton, AFCON, Covid and all

He's bad at what exactly, when you watched most of his matches and checked his stats?

Adams rotates too, has worse fixtures, and pales in stats. Who's that better player at that price with fixtures, stats, 100% starts and blazing hot form?

              1. TopBinFc
                4 years, 7 months ago

I have watched Palaces game and he misses to much, talk about stats all you want but you dont get points in fpl for getting chances. Hes not prolific and never will be. Theres loads of options who are nailed under that price. Benteke is none of the 3 you mentioned above, stats, 100% to start and hot form.

For me I think Pukki, Saint Maxim, King, Dennis, Wood are all better options and some are cheaper. All these are guaranteed to start which is half the battle. That's juts my opinion, I get you like Benteke but I cant see any reason to.

This is a horrible way to play FPL. "He hasn't gotten points in the 3 GWs I've owned him for, so he's horrible"

Why hasn't he gotten points? Has he been playing badly? Has he been playing deep, like Kane? Is he now second choice, rarely played by his coach?

Has he been unlucky, drawing good saves, having his shot/assist cleared or hit the bar, getting into good spaces but missing the ball by a hair's breadth?

How are his stats? Does he get many shots? Are they in the box? Does he get big chances?

When he's on the pitch, does his team supply him with crosses and passes, giving him enough chances to score?

These are predictive of future points. What you've said here (and many times now about many players) would make you sell Alonso before Leeds, Son (4 blanks in a row) before Brentford and Norwich, Raphinha before Norwich and Leicester, Ronaldo before Norwich, etc

It's a dangerous way to play FPL. No player suddenly gets an urge to get lucky and score all his points just when you have him in your team. The multiple factors of football's wide ecosystem will always come into play in every minute of every match, but at least we have stats and eye test to predict the next few matches with

              Ah, sorry about that

The dude was topping the shot counts. once Howe came. FFScout articles screamed this

There are far too many factors involved in a shot ending up in the net for me to take ONLY "he hasn't scored while in my FPL team" as a logical reason. Doesn't add up to me

Has to be playing badly too or dropped from the first XI et al, and then we're talking

Maybe try to do a double swoop by downgrading a defender to dalot to free up your budget up to 7.5 and get Watkins, or Antonio if you can free up even more. Double watford strikers is asking for trouble

If I may suggest: get Bowen this GW vs Burnley, then get Bilva next GW vs Leeds

Wolves aren't the easiest to haul against atm, while Burnley doesn't really want to defend anymore. This is assuming Bowen is rested tonight, of course

Morning dzz, Plan to do the following 5 transfers by gw18 (2 hits involved) but can't figure out priority. I will have 0.1m left over if i do all of them now so quite close to being priced out

    A: Alonso >> Dalot
    B: Raph > Bowen
    C: Toney >> Antonio
    D: Mbeumo >> King
    E: Davis >> Brownhill

    1) Best route? i.e. 3 now (-8), save in 17 and 2 in gw18 for free vs. 2 now (-4), save17 and 3 (-4) in gw18

    2) How would you rank them

        Salah - Jota - Foden* - ESR* - Brownhill

My opinion is that you need full roster of players who are getting minutes. So thaty 3rd spot should go to Broja.

Well his isolation period will be up by then, he could be training privately in isolation, the fact he didn't rule him out suggests he will be back and will get mins. Son will definitely miss 2 GWs so that's why I'm transferring son as opposed to Toney

He doesn’t want to be there. Surely Ragnick chooses Rashford over Cavani when fit

          1. Piggs Boson

Cavani is a professional. He wasn't getting gametime with 1 striker system under Ole due to Ronaldo, but he would with Ralph's 2-striker system.

Some games might require Rashford's pace, but for the low blocks, Cavani is better.

            Bench cover?

    A) Toney > Lukaku
    B) Toney > Antonio, Next week Allan > Silva/ Foden
    C) Watkins > Ronaldo

Was keen on A but last night Lukaku looked leggy and Chelsea looked ragged. Somehow not convinced by Ronaldo as yet so want to hold onto that move for now so leaning towards B and probably bench boost in GW17.

Foden is expected to be fine, according to a reliable journalist. Pep said he subbed Foden off as a precaution, so that's another positive sign

You should be fine. If ESR is fit, I'd start him over White: zero attack threat, and Southampton can score. Everton had the ball in Ramsdale's net 5 times. That's a bad sign. Rest of the bench is fine as is, I think
