BRENTFORD 2-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Pontus Jansson (£4.6m), Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) | Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Marcus Forss (£5.3m), Saman Ghoddos (£5.3m) | Tom Cleverley (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Dennis x3, Mbeumo x2, Jansson x1

BACK-TO-BACK RETURNS FOR MBEUMO

He left it late, but Bryan Mbeumo’s (£5.5m) dramatic last-minute penalty means that he has now produced attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks, with tonight’s nine-point haul – courtesy of a goal and two bonus points – his best of the season so far.

In the absence of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), the out-of-position Frenchman was Brentford’s brightest spark on the night, running the channels effectively and, in addition to his winner, forcing a good first-half save from Daniel Bachmann (£4.2m). He ended the match with three goal attempts, while his positioning meant that he was once again the Bees’ most advanced player.

“Mbuemo deserves a lot of praise. I think he was unplayable today. I’ve said before I have the world’s best penalty taker in Ivan Toney and now maybe I have number two as well.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford’s average position map v Watford in Gameweek 16

It was a much-needed three points for Thomas Frank’s side, who went into tonight’s clash with just one win from eight games. However, they now sit in the top-half, though it is worth noting that their fixtures from this point onwards do toughen considerably:

DENNIS ON TARGET AGAIN

Following tonight’s opener, Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m) is now Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) top-scoring forward on 84 points. The 24-year-old arrived at Vicarage Road in the summer as a relative unknown, but has since been directly involved in 13 Watford goals, a total only Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) can trump.

For the majority of tonight’s tie, it was surprisingly Dennis who took up more of a central role, with King operating off the left. They did sometimes switch, but it was notable just how much wider King was for large periods.

Josh King’s touch heatmap v Brentford in Gameweek 16

Dennis is now surely set for further price rises, with over 20k FPL managers already transferring him in tonight, though it is worth noting that he could be set to miss games in the New Year due to his involvement in the Nigeria AFCON squad.

WATFORD DENIED FIRST CLEAN SHEET LATE ON

It’s now seven defeats in nine matches for Watford under Claudio Ranieri, a period which has seen them concede a league-high 21 goals since he took charge.

The schedule, which has been particularly testing of late, has of course played a part, but the fact they are the only Premier League side yet to keep a single clean sheet all season is a huge cause for concern.

FEWEST PREMIER LEAGUE CLEAN SHEETS 2021/22

“I was very happy (in the first half), we weren’t playing how we usually play but we were winning the match. Then, in the second half, slowly we went too deep. We gave some chances to them.

My frustration has passed, now my mind is on the next match. There are other battles and we are stronger than tonight. That was my message to the players: it’s very important to react immediately.” – Claudio Ranieri

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Goode, Jansson, Janelt, Roerslev, Baptiste, Norgaard, Jensen (Ghoddos 69), Henry (Onyeka 77), Mbeumo, Wissa (Forss 69)

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Ngakia, Kucka, Sissoko, Cucho (Sema 77), Cleverley (Joao Pedro 58), King, Dennis (Tufan 90+1)

The difference between Dennis vs King and Bernardo vs Foden is simple.

Foden is an above average PL player. King is a below average PL player.
Foden is young and still has improvement in him. King is older and has no improvement left in him.

Stats are a large part of the equation, but so is ability. You want to pick players with good stats and good ability. The hidden gems in FPL are usually younger players who have limited PL experience and have improvement in them (think in the past players like Alli, Kane, Mahrez, AWB, Bale). At the moment I would consider these players like Saka, ESR, Greenwood, Foden, Mount, ASM (borderline as 24 now) etc.

Mbeumo was on the list, but his performances in the PL show to me he is not good enough at this level.

King, is like another version of Andros Townsend IMO, Townsend burst onto the scene, people thought he was good and then he just declined. Could say the same of Walcott tbh.

        Very good post.
King has shown us his low ceiling through previous seasons..
Whereas Dennis is fresh to PL and the ceiling can be very high by the looks of ut

Below average in what terms? While I get your point, I don't necessarily agree that King is a bad player. He has consistently been posting average is slightly above average xG numbers, so he's getting the chances and that's most important for a forward (at least from the FPL perspective, but he has also very good numbers regarding pressures and tackles). Price is the crucial factor here, if Townsend was 4m I would get him in, even it is the player I never regarded as talented (slightly speaking). The same goes for Foden, if he was 12m I wouldn't touch him even if I think he's one of the most talented players in the league. It's all about the value. And King is a very good value for 5.7m, regardless of what Dennis is currently doing. I have no doubt Dennis' scores are unsustainable given his stats (which doesn't necesserly make him a bad option in FPL).

This sounds like someone who chose King over Dennis (or x stats over eye test) and now has sour grapes.
      13GI 15bonus now for Dennis

What’s blind sided people is the fact it’s his first season in the league so because there’s no precedent then it’s easy to assume he won’t keep it up….

The penalty argument is also hard to go by since penalties in general are way down this season.

I also think Dennis has benefitted from the absence of Sarr

Let me know your players outside your top 11 guys.
    Have you taken a risk?
    have you gone too heavy?
    Will your third bench matter?
I have Guaita Bowen Benteke and Livramento with Jota a doubt. Maybe over the top but I hope it pays off come end of January.

      My bench is

I wonder about the tactic. Not knocking it but planning a cheep player for a DGW might give you issues picking your side for a 1 week gain. When is a DGW likely? If soon, fair enough.

Attacking players are all fit too - kai, puli, cho, timo, kaku, ziyech - for the front 3 slots.

Brian Mbeumo...I brought him in earlier this season with hope he would be a bargain.
I have watched him miss numerous opportunities for assists during Brentford breakaways and squander goal scoring opportunities. Got rid two weeks ago with no regrets even with his recent points.
Unfortunately he ia proving to be championship standard, unlike Emmanual Dennis who is improving and impressing every game.

Before I looked at the overnight gameweek leader (50 points), I said 'I bet he's Egyptian'. T'was true. Then I saw 760k rank IN EGYPT. The one week punter accounts are about 10% of the game!

The way the players are clustered on the first match or day, i don't think it's the whole weekend, usually.

Just game 1 or day 1 results.

Clearly it could be structured differently in different places.

Sometimes the eventual gw rank1 is a regular player.

          Not that high.

But Egypt, Iraq, Malaysia and Indonesia dominate the first day games.

It's a proxy gambling method, in Muslim countries where you can't access gambling sites online or in country.

I guess the pot is split somehow and people pay into an account in advance, weekly.

                  China you can gamble anyway.

                  As in Russia.

Recently a guy from England did rank 1 at the end of the gw. But i think it was a player from Iraq or Egypt that ranked 1 on day 1.

Plenty of American players on here. It literally shows you their national league.

You're right that Indian players also play the highest rank gw too, as well as plenty of regular players and participants on here too. Some masters of the game in fact. Including the current community champion against weekly scout picks.

Also, in the end of the GW it's usually not the player who's on the top in the first day of the GW so not sure what do they exactly gain lol.

                    Anyways, good luck this GW!

                      It's a billion dollar market.

Proxy gambling on an outcome that isn't rigged.

There is integrity in English football and FPL, despite what people say.

                      There's a link above, but it's a bit academic.

China - not legally. That's why thousands of gangsters have set up online casinos over here (Cambodia) to target and scam Chinese. It's also why Chinese gambling syndicates set up in dodgy UK tax-havens and sponsor premier games - see all that Chinese advertising on Wolves ad hordes - all gambling.
Chinese authorities are starting to crack down - denying criminals flight to here and arresting casino gangsters that trick and enslave Chinese and other saps. But it is a HUUGE criminal enterprise.

It's fairly obvious if you look at it each week.

The person this week has only played gw16.

Sometimes they've played 3 random weeks somehow. Which implies it is a big money sweepstake kind of system.

Can mini leagues be deleted during the season too?

The one week punters are always lowly ranked. Especially if they've only played a few game weeks.

So the bottom tranche doesn't count. Not sure how many that is and I'm not inclined to look.

I'm more keen to understand if it's loads of little leagues or more like a football pools nationwide. And how much gets paid out?

This is the first cup week. I'm up against a seemingly dead team, as I expect most of us are. But presumably we could be drawn against a team that's been dormant all season and suddenly activates the week we're H2H with them. That would be annoying.

I don’t think you can blame King for hitting the post, that was a decent finish. If that goes in then the discussion is very different.

I think he’s a half decent PL striker. It’s hard to score goals at that level and he’s done so more than players like Mitrovic, who has torn up the Championship but never really done it in the PL.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of.

If Jota doesn't show it won't matter.
I did a last-minute switch to drop Jota to the bench and start ESR.
It would thrill me if Jota got a one-point cameo, but then again if ESR or Foden or a Chelsea wingback don't play, I get that point too.

Plan to double up for City mid, which one to accompany Bernardo?
        A. Gundogan
        B. Foden
        C. Go for Bowen instead
        D. Go for Rashford instead

City midfielders in December is Pep roulette on steroids.

I got Foden and Bernardo this week after selling Kane
My logic is Bilva playing really well and in the right place at the right time. He’s never been an “expected” monster he’s very consistent when he plays and right now he’s playing often.
Foden if he can get over these little niggles is a favourite of Peps and from an eye test always looks like he will be involved in the goal.

Decided against Gundogan with Kdb back

Can I get your thoughts on this for next GW? Got 1 FT, 2.7M ITB

        Ramsdale
        TAA Cancelo Alonso
        Salah Jota Bowen Mbeumo
        Ronaldo Antonio King

        Foster Williams Livramento Brownhill

Keeping Jota, currently thinking A if he at least makes the bench today:

        A) Mbeumo > Foden
        B) Mbeumo > Bernardo
        C) Brownhill > Zaha/-7.1 mid (bench Mbeumo)
        D) Williams > James (bench Mbeumo)
        E) smth else?

        Thanks!

Still have my WC and so can get Bowen in two weeks but decided to do Son > Mount instead. Did I do the right thing?

        Mount (LEE, EVE)
        Bowen (bur, ars)

Cheers mate. I also have Jota in my starting 11 and so had to get rid of Son as Gilmour not enough to cover him and Jota (if he's out too)

Nothing, he'll haul sometimes but I won't captain and he's not worth the money for me

If you've invested the MITB elsewhere wisely it's not a major issue.

I'd expect most would know full well he might haul v Norwich and made their decision on that basis.

Spurs match against Rennes is not going to be rescheduled. I thought it was going to be difficult with a country specific draw on Monday.

Woah, awkward. UEFA gave Spurs permission, so they can't be kicked out. If they award a draw or something, a club misses out and could sue.

Should be a forfeit. Well, I hope it is. Clears up Spurs' insane fixture list and brings us one step closer to DGW21

UEFA backed themselves into a corner here

Ha, well a forfeit would open the door for Spurs to sue, get free money and shake off the fixture headache!
