BRENTFORD 2-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Pontus Jansson (£4.6m), Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) | Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Marcus Forss (£5.3m), Saman Ghoddos (£5.3m) | Tom Cleverley (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Dennis x3, Mbeumo x2, Jansson x1

BACK-TO-BACK RETURNS FOR MBEUMO

He left it late, but Bryan Mbeumo’s (£5.5m) dramatic last-minute penalty means that he has now produced attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks, with tonight’s nine-point haul – courtesy of a goal and two bonus points – his best of the season so far.

In the absence of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), the out-of-position Frenchman was Brentford’s brightest spark on the night, running the channels effectively and, in addition to his winner, forcing a good first-half save from Daniel Bachmann (£4.2m). He ended the match with three goal attempts, while his positioning meant that he was once again the Bees’ most advanced player.

“Mbuemo deserves a lot of praise. I think he was unplayable today. I’ve said before I have the world’s best penalty taker in Ivan Toney and now maybe I have number two as well.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford’s average position map v Watford in Gameweek 16

It was a much-needed three points for Thomas Frank’s side, who went into tonight’s clash with just one win from eight games. However, they now sit in the top-half, though it is worth noting that their fixtures from this point onwards do toughen considerably:

DENNIS ON TARGET AGAIN

Following tonight’s opener, Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m) is now Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) top-scoring forward on 84 points. The 24-year-old arrived at Vicarage Road in the summer as a relative unknown, but has since been directly involved in 13 Watford goals, a total only Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) can trump.

For the majority of tonight’s tie, it was surprisingly Dennis who took up more of a central role, with King operating off the left. They did sometimes switch, but it was notable just how much wider King was for large periods.

Josh King’s touch heatmap v Brentford in Gameweek 16

Dennis is now surely set for further price rises, with over 20k FPL managers already transferring him in tonight, though it is worth noting that he could be set to miss games in the New Year due to his involvement in the Nigeria AFCON squad.

WATFORD DENIED FIRST CLEAN SHEET LATE ON

It’s now seven defeats in nine matches for Watford under Claudio Ranieri, a period which has seen them concede a league-high 21 goals since he took charge.

The schedule, which has been particularly testing of late, has of course played a part, but the fact they are the only Premier League side yet to keep a single clean sheet all season is a huge cause for concern.

FEWEST PREMIER LEAGUE CLEAN SHEETS 2021/22
TeamClean sheets
Watford0
Leicester City, Newcastle United1
Burnley2
Everton, Leeds United, Manchester United, Norwich City, West Ham United3

“I was very happy (in the first half), we weren’t playing how we usually play but we were winning the match. Then, in the second half, slowly we went too deep. We gave some chances to them.

My frustration has passed, now my mind is on the next match. There are other battles and we are stronger than tonight. That was my message to the players: it’s very important to react immediately.” – Claudio Ranieri

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Goode, Jansson, Janelt, Roerslev, Baptiste, Norgaard, Jensen (Ghoddos 69), Henry (Onyeka 77), Mbeumo, Wissa (Forss 69)

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Ngakia, Kucka, Sissoko, Cucho (Sema 77), Cleverley (Joao Pedro 58), King, Dennis (Tufan 90+1)

King owners annoyed that their punt on the lower returning option didn’t pay off this week.

Be like owning Mane over Salah and being annoyed that he doesn’t outscore him. Or like me being annoyed that my Foden pick doesn’t outscore Bilva. If it works, it’s fortune. Form is the sensible basis for picking

Lots of people seem to put fixtures first.

They're falling out on fpl Twitter on xGoals v football is played on grass, not in a spreadsheet type way.

          Yeah.

It's underlying xStats it seems to be dominant.

I know Big Man does a thorough job and i like his analysis. Sometimes you just got to go with form and accuracy. Over performing is great if they're in your team and improving too.

More than that, you have to watch matches. The eye test is the most important stat! I've replied 3 times yesterday to questions over to go with King/Dennis always the same way.

            Stats: King
            Eye test: Dennis

The only stats that matter are goals and assists (and maybe minutes played too). He’s better in all of them

People were scoring well at FPL before you could over analyse every single statistic

I’m not annoyed by it, that’s the way it goes - I don’t think it was a bad decision and I think/hope over the course of 4/5 games they will score similar points

For what it’s with I thought they both looked garbage despite 1 shot each the difference being Dennis finished his and king hit the post, general play both stunk

In form Dennis playing more central and King wide doesn't make them smile now either. King also dropped deeper than Dennis. Yet, even though I bought Dennis when he was only 5.2, his points have stayed on my bench. Now with Jota and Gundogan there is at least possibility to get them.

Odd benching with Gundogan is always a possibility. I don't expect it to happen, but he did play 90 minutes on Tuesday imo. He will miss the odd game and this could be it. Or next one. I'd say he is about 70-80% certain starter this week.

2.8 ITB. Assuming no injuries/COVID cases which works best? Wilson's fixtures are horrendous while Pool and City defence could do well.

    A - Wilson > Pukki
    B - Wilson > Watkins
    C - Duffy > Dias
    D - Duffy > VVD

    Sanchez
    TAA - James - Cancelo
    Salah (c) - Mount - Jota - Bilva
    Antonio - Wilson - Dennis

    Foster - Livra - Gilmour - Duffy

That hasn’t always been the case though, Sky even said beforehand they had expected King to be central?

Watford dropped so deep at 1-0 it was insane. King ended up playing left back but I doubt that’ll be the case in future games.

Both players are fine IMO. Dennis hardly set the world on fire bar one header.

Given his recent history, it sounds like Phil Foden will not be risked, and that makes sense given that he has twice aggravated his ankle by playing before it was fully sorted.

Probably means absolutely nothing but he's the featured player in Arsenal's matchday post:

      https://twitter.com/Arsenal/status/1469601256490639370?t=68c18Sijs-OlG7tiEPCpXg&s=19

Hoping he starts, needs to make up the 14 point deficit from getting him in for Mbeumo.

What do you reckon regarding Watkins as an option going forward? Too early to gauge under a bew manager and system, or worthwhile having a punt on him given the good run of fixtures?

Well so far, Mings, Young, Luiz, Bailey, McGinn, Buendia and Ings have all laid on 2 or more assists for Villa. Some are injured and some aren't that relevant, but so far 4 (in last 9 which is more than Ronaldo for example) have found their way to Watkins.

He's certainly worthy of consideration. To argue otherwise is short-sighted and being unable to see that is a fatal flaw 😉

On my radar but not sure what happens when Ings returns. Watkins could be shifted to the wing.

Keeping an eye out, depends if I go no-Ron. Between Watkins + Antonio in 3-4-3 or Ronaldo + Bowen in 3-5-2, think the latter is much stronger but will reassess after this week's matches.

This is all silly. King vs Dennis is just one player in a team. FPL is about managing a squad of players over multiple weeks. One single match is essentially negligible, and being unable to see that is a fatal flaw. Got to be able to see the big picture as well as the details.

Whilst arguing about King vs Dennis, Mason Mount is lining up a hattrick.

Funny how many narratives can people invent to explain simple variance and overperformance. I liked the most the ones that stated that stats doesn't matter at all when someone's in form. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I thought the debate was on results and outcomes, rather than underlying expectations.

Actual goals and assists which do go with good form and points.

Of course someone like Salah is an exception and things change.

A lot of the best managers use stats to get high rankings.

As a Dennis owner fully expect King may start out scoring Dennis sooner or later.

    Sigh, further to this nonsense.

Statistics can be grouped into leading indicators and lagging indicators.

Lagging indicators happen after the event and are a sign that change has occured. In this case goals and assists.

Leading indicators happen in advance of an event and are a sign that change is going to happen. In this case goals imminent, xG etc.

Leading indicators are only needed to identify change. Aka someone who isnt scoring but about to go on a run, OR someone who is scoring and about to go on a barren run.

Learn to stats. Its never, and will never be, one stat fits all.
