Phil Foden is only a substitute as Manchester City take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first of five Premier League matches today.

Kick-off at the Etihad is at 12:30 GMT.

It seems like Foden has been a doubt for every league fixture ever since he returned from international duty in November with ankle problems, and he isn’t risked from the start this afternoon despite making the matchday squad.

Foden and Kyle Walker are the only two players who made Pep Guardiola’s Gameweek 15 starting XI who lose their places this lunchtime, although City did have a Champions League tie with Leipzig in between.

Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish are the only players who have started all three league and cup matches over the last week.

Replacing Foden and Walker from the Gameweek 15 side are Gabriel Jesus, who like Aymeric Laporte has recovered from a knock, and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Bernardo Silva was the most-bought Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player of Gameweek 16, with just over one million transfers spent on the Portuguese midfielder, and there is no surprise to see him reclaim his place in the centre of the park after a midweek breather.

There’s just one change for Wolves from their brave loss to Liverpool, as Hwang Hee-chan is replaced by Joao Moutinho. That alteration, presumably, will see Bruno Lage beef up his midfield and move from a 3-4-3 to a 3-5-2.

Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez will be attempting to create their 2019/20 heroics at the Etihad up top.

Recovering from illness and injury to make the bench are Marcal and Willy Boly.

Can somebody explain to me the over relying on stats when picking a player?

So King has lots of shots and chances which means he is a good pick?

Surely that means he misses most of them as well?

What was Ronaldo, Messi, Greaves, Dixie Dean stats like? Not a sarcastic question I really don't know.

I remember Andy Cole had the reputation of needing multiple shots to get a goal. Difference was he normally got the goal in the end.

Just wondering. Doesn't seeing a player miss chance after chance actually want you to stay clear?

    1. Ephurion
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

The case with King is that he over the years has scored on a given % of his xG.
Unless something has dramatically changed (athleticism etc.) one would expect him to keep scoring around the same % of his xG over time.

When a player underperforms compared to his own baseline, we must decide if he's all of a sudden a much worse player than before or not. If not, we put it down to "form" (or natural variation) and expect him to start performing up to his own standards.

King is 29 and hasn't had any injuries that should severely reduce his performance over time, and that's why many believe he'll "come good".

True. And that argument, depending on interpretation, can be used both for and against him underperforming compared to his stats.

Stats need to be used with common sense and the eye test together.
Like if Joelinton started posting amazing underlying numbers, I wouldn't just jump on and wait patiently for returns. As I know he's crap and misses chances regularly.
But when you get a player with proven pedigree who's posting excellent underlying numbers (lets say someone like Vardy), then it's probably time to start looking at that player and watching the games more closely.

As for King... he's not gunna suddenly become a 20+ goal striker is he? I think he's a good fit for being 1st bench player...

        Sometimes it's simple.

The guy scoring more is a better pick than the guy missing more chances.

But I wouldn't want to debunk the stats approach. My best season was when I was crunching the mins per goal data etc before it was all provided to everyone.

I think Big Man Bakar spent an entire season in the top 100 rank.

        So he's onto something!

He's a professional striker with a history of scoring goals. Getting lots of shots is a sign that he could be hauling or at least ticking over. This is even true for players with terrible finishing ability, like Jesus! This reaks of hindsight and recency bias. I believe King owners are upset that he played too wide, which was unexpected. Players who score a lot of goals, usually have very 'good stats'.

If someone scores a lot of goals regularly he has good stats too. Not a great philosophy here. Some players may overperform or underperform xG regularly, but not as much, let's say 20% max. It may happen that some players go on a run of massive overperformance or underperformance in a short run, but on the long run it is unsustainable and there is no running from that. Everyone reverts to the mean after some time.

King's output is in proportion with his underlying numbers, which helps to stave off any worries about regression. Players don't keep up Dennis' output in the long run unless they're world class.

I remember Auba scoring something like 5 goals from 5 shots over a few games, then his output imploded. I dodged a bullet by avoiding him and his unsustainable conversion rate. Something similar could happen to Dennis, although I could be wrong and there's almost no way of knowing at this point.

If past points was a perfect indicator of future points, the whole game would be solved and we'd all score 2,500 points every season. It's all just guesswork, and guesswork based on underlying stats rather than previous points has given me and many others some great seasons.

Players who miss loads of chances can be top quality assets. Salah in his first season at Liverpool and Sterling in his best seasons at City show that. People who decried them as wasteful were left behind.

The "three games in a week" is the problem itself. High chance of muscle injuries

Tis true, tis true. I'm thinking with the amateur gaelic football club player hat on rather than the top professional footballer 'asset' on. He's magic to watch, so you're right, resting a game or two then we'll see a lot more of his brilliance after Christmas.

Rough feeling, although a few weeks ago I had 5 to play on Sunday and Spurs v Burnley was called off and Foden didn't play meaning I was then relying on Allan and a 0 pointer from Livramento to come in and save me. Sometimes I think I end up doing better when all my players are done early even though it makes looking at your rank dropping as the weekend goes on a bit annoying.

Lads, its Josh King. He peaked in 2016 with Westworld. Don't even get me started on season 3...

Can't wait for Jesus to Ronaldo move for a hit to bite me on the arse. Guaranteed if I didn't do it then Jesus would've been benched

What are the chances of one of, Jota or ESR starting? I could do with at least one of them getting minutes or I’ll be down to 10 men

ESR very likely to start. Jota much less so.

ESR will definitely get some minutes. He might not start though.

Commentator: "If it wasn't for Salah's form we'd probably be talking about Bernardo Silva as the frontrunner for player of the season coming up to Christmas"

Er no you wouldn't. He's been very good this season but was more or less unnoticed until he started this scoring run a few weeks ago.

My record with City mids so far this season -
    Mahrez- 1 assist (2 GW's)
    Torres- nothing (3 GW's)
    Grealish- 1 assist (4 GW's)
    Foden - 1 assist (3 GW's)

Now we wait and see how Bilva gets on ... apologies to all owners who are expecting big things to continue for him.
    He's done now!

Foden to come on and bag a brace with Grealish assists, then?

I only bought him because I wanted him to stop scoring points for everyone else. Worked with Jota last week and Gallagher the week before.
