Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

As we head towards the midpoint of the season, we’re getting near that time when a lot of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will lose interest and give up. Even if you’re the type of person who will keep toiling away whether you’re ranked 8th or eight millionth, it’s easy to feel pessimistic about your prospects, particularly if the effort you are putting in has not paid off to date and, especially, if people who you know take the game less seriously than you do are somehow way ahead of you in rank.

But there’s every reason to feel optimistic and to stick to the plan and this article will discuss some of the reasons why.

Windfalls and Wildcards

There’s a popular thought experiment that asks what would happen if all the world’s money was distributed evenly throughout its population, with one prominent hypothesis being that it would eventually end up in roughly the same pockets that it is currently in. While this is, of course, theoretical, there’s evidence to support it in the statistic that 70% of lottery winners go bankrupt within seven years of winning. The idea is that anyone can get lucky and receive a windfall but holding onto it or growing it requires knowledge, effort, discipline and a network.

In FPL, ‘windfalls’ come in many forms, perhaps the most obvious being a points haul. A haul is never entirely luck, but every haul involves a degree of luck. More significant for this discussion, however, are the chips, in particular the Wildcards.

While there are only two Wildcard chips, FPL managers really get three Wildcards in the season; one in either half and one before the season kicks off. Among the many benefits of playing a Wildcard is that it allows you to instantly undo many of the problems caused by poor planning.

While, when planning a transfer, a serious manager might look five or six Gameweeks into the future to assess the fixtures of the player(s) they’re interested in and then consider questions such as; ‘how nailed on are they’ and ‘who they might transfer them out for further down the line when the fixtures change’, most managers don’t do this. Most managers take a very topline view of who is a good asset and will sleepwalk into a negative fixture swing or arrive late to a positive one because they don’t have the means or the inclination to plan for them. Or they might just have more important things to do, it’s a grey area.

Yet, very often, the line between the serious and casual manager is very fine at points throughout the season. Sometimes this is because of overthinking; a serious manager will spend all week analysing the form and the stats while the more casual manager sees Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) as the top-scoring forward and transfers him in, just before he scores a brace.

Other times, though, it’s because the Wildcard acts like a sort of defibrillator for what might otherwise have been a dead-end team blighted by poor fixtures and rotation.

However, while a Wildcard might inject new life into a team, these effects will likely be temporary unless they are actively maintained. There is a literal limit to how many times a Wildcard can bail your team out, meaning that, if you don’t put the work in and actively manage your team, you will eventually fall behind. As a serious manager who puts this kind of effort in, you can reasonably expect the opposite to be true too; actively manage your team and you will eventually get ahead.

I’ll stress that this is not intended as some form of ‘FPL snobbery’ against those who do not schedule their lives around press conferences and price changes. I’ll be the first to admit that there are many positive things we FPL obsessives can learn from the more casual approach to the game. Hopefully, however, it will encourage those who are putting a lot of effort into their FPL team and yet are not currently seeing the results that they want, to trust the process.

Your rank, right now, is not necessarily an accurate reflection of where your efforts will take you over time and with consistency. In the 16 Gameweeks so far, most FPL managers have effectively been able to totally remodel their teams twice. But there are 22 Gameweeks to go and only one opportunity to do that again.

So, at the risk of sounding like an REM song; don’t give up, do keep applying the FPL skills you’ve acquired, keep putting in the effort when it comes to strategy and planning transfers, keep disciplined when it comes to your knee-jerk impulses and your biases and keep leveraging the network that you have access to in the FPL community. Over time, it will pay off.*

*Probably.

    Ok can someone help me here as I am confused a bit, last night after the palace game I was the following;

    --> 990 points and 370,354 rank

    Post bonus which I got 3 x bonus for Gallagher, I went to;

    --> 993 and 375,366

    There is no way enough people had Gallagher captain or Tomkins / Hughes in their teams to push my rank down 5k after receiving 3 bonus points..............OR am I being stupid?

        They forgot to put utd back in after they were initially pulled out to face a team they couldn't face (Villarreal because they qualified from the same group)

        I think Liverpools ball was accidentally put in place of man utd for ensuing draws, but was not chosen anyway

        no but he'll get good minutes still and his stats point at returns (missed a sitter off the bench on sat). Salah is due a rest, and him and mane head to african nations in the not too distant future.

      This week for me has been a repeat of the theme of the last few years that I have found anyway.

      My team scored 66 (-4). Many years ago this would have been an almost certain green arrow and sizeable rank boost. However my rank has taken a 32k drop which is quite significant.

      The game has become so hard now and you sometimes wonder what you have to do to make ground.

        I think it was genuinely a better game ten years ago. Ten years ago you could largely negate the effect of luck by being far ahead of the curve. Now that the bar for being a solid manager has dropped considerably, the impact of luck feels relatively more powerful. I realise that sounds a bit waaaaahhh why can't I win anymore this has got harder crybaby, but it hasn't just got harder, it's also got much less reliable. I dipped out of putting anything like as much into this game a few years back when I decided that it beginning to tilt far more in favour of gambling than of a hobby where the limiting factors were time, energy and ability.

            When the edges are smaller, variance is bigger. Just the way it is.

            Game is much harder today than in the past.

              Indeed. But it's not a 100 meter sprint. It's a game that is far more chaotic and comes with a great deal of luck, more even than football itself. I would caution anyone to reflect on how much pleasure they get from the modern game. The fanatic FPL community appears an unhappy community

              Yep. Its so hard to make ground when people have a lot of the same players. You are basically relying on 2-3 lesser owned players to deliver and if they dont its an almost certain red arrow. This makes FPL a boring game in many ways. I have little interest in watching how players I own get on who have an ownership of more than 30%

            Very much agree with this. A couple of seasons ago when they first got rid of the 1 hour before kickoff deadline I posted a really long rant on here about how the game needs to do more to support the active players. I think this week, of all the weeks, arguably does most to reinforce that point because not only has it been a difficult week to make any gains in terms of points, it's also the start of the rubbish FPL Cup where large amounts of active managers' teams have been dumped out by random dead teams with Gallagher coming off the bench of whatever. There's always the skill vs luck debate but I've always said it's not about arguing whether this game is more skill or more luck, it's for the people making decisions to understand that more skill is an objectively better direction for the game to go in and more luck makes things worse for active players, who are the ONLY players that actually matter. Say what you like about the leaked line ups being unfair for people but it was an edge that the dedicated minority made the most of. Those kinds of edges are fewer than ever now, and that's not a good thing.

            Perhaps you're a bit too emotionally invested in the colour of arrows. From a gwk-av perspective your score is fine. The arrow is irrelevant.

              its not the colour of the arrow necessarily. Its the percentage rank drop/gain. Ive dropped 32k places after getting a score of 66 which is depressing.

                seems weird to be dressed by the reverse applies that if you have a slightly above average week for your rank you'll see similar gains

                    the depressing part is getting what I would consider a good score but still dropping 32k places in rank.

                    It seems you have to get a score that is hugely above the average to make any meaningful ground.

                      Find it odd that with ten years experience you can't see past weekly score variance. Some weeks 66 would be phenomenal, others a disaster.

                        Can't speak for the OP but I got 67(-4) this week and also got a red, and for me, the worst thing is it's not immediately obvious to me WHY that's a red, i.e. why was the average so high this week? Like previously for example, I got 80 points in GW9 and I was happy with that score in a vacuum but it was a huge 100k+ red arrow because I didn't captain Salah and he scored 24 points. I don't think this week particularly felt like a high-scoring gameweek, but it was, and that difference in how it feels throws me off a bit.

                          I dunno, I can't really see why you're that puzzled. The vast majority of owned players didn't blank this week. And you scored average and took a hit. That's it, isn't it?

                  It may not have been sufficient for a rise this week but it's in the ballpark of what's required on a weekly basis in order to reach the overall points total necessary for a good OR. I'd rather hit 60-odd and drop in rank than 40-odd and rise.

                    This makes no sense whatsoever. Its not about the actual score you get but how it compares to others that matters, i.e gameweek rank. You gain rank when your score is better than others wether it be 80 or 40. A score of 60 is good if the average that week was 40 but not if its 55.

                      It makes sense in the context of OR. If your OR is 50k you may drop with a score that at 3M will earn you a rise

                    Unfortunately that's not true because gameweeks are not equal. The average player doesn't go through 38 gameweeks scoring more or less the same score each week, there will be huge DGWs where the average score for the dedicated player is 100+ whilst there will be BGWs where the average player has about 8 players and score 35. If you get 40 in a BGW you've actually made gains on the crowd but if you get a score of 80 when shedloads of players are scoring 120 you're going to really struggle to make up those 40 points elsewhere.

                      What is the general overall end of season score required for a high rank?

                      What is that number averaged out over 38 gwks?

                      That number is your weekly target or over multiple weeks the gwk-av you need.

                      Boom arrows don't matter.

                      Obviously if your team is shite then you'll get horrendous scores but I'm going to assume you're a good manager and not getting shite scores regularly. Just a different way of looking at it that helps remove emotion from it and keep decisions based around logic. Reduce mistakes etc. Can't bang huge scores every week and we're bound to have shockers in the 40's or lower but once your average is where it needs to be it'll work out. It can't not.

                Save all day. With COVID cases bringing suspended matches and AFCON around the corner, I'd advise keeping 2 FTs until the end of the year unless absolutely necessary.
