Burnely v Watford has become the second Gameweek 17 fixture to be postponed because of Covid-19.

A coronavirus outbreak in the Hornets’ squad has led to the match, which was scheduled to be played on Wednesday evening, being postponed just two and a half hours before kick-off.

The visitors said they had an “insufficient number of first-team players” to fulfill the fixture.

Tuesday’s game between Brentford and Manchester United fell by the wayside as a result of the Red Devils reporting a string of positive tests, while the Gameweek 16 clash between Brighton and Hove Albion and a badly-hit Tottenham Hotspur was similarly affected at the weekend.

Given how short notice this postponement was, more Gameweek 17 cancellations certainly can’t be ruled out – Spurs and Leicester City, for example, both requested that their game on Thursday evening be called off but were rebuffed by the Premier League.

Watford’s Gameweek 18 clash with Crystal Palace is surely in significant doubt, too, given how quick the turnarounds are between games.

A statement from the Hornets read:

The decision was taken following guidance from medical advisers due to an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within Watford’s squad. As a result, the club has an insufficient number of First Team players available to fulfil the match.

The Premier League understands this decision will disappoint and frustrate fans who were due to attend this evening’s game and apologises for the inconvenience and disruption caused at such short notice.

In considering any application to postpone, the Board considers a range of sporting and medical factors. Each decision is taken on a case-by-case basis with everyone’s health of utmost importance

In light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced Emergency Measures. These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time.

More postponements look inevitable: on Monday, it was announced that there were 42 new positive cases among players and staff – the highest weekly figure since records began last May and 26 more than the previous high in 2021/22.

Burnley join Spurs, Brighton and Chelsea in having two postponed matches that still need to be rearranged:

POSTPONED MATCHES STILL TO BE REARRANGED
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Tottenham Hotspur (Covid)
  • Brentford v Manchester United (Covid)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Chelsea (Club World Cup)
  • Chelsea v Arsenal (Club World Cup)

Really struggling to enjoy this season with all the COVID issues. So difficult to play when you lose players and matches after the deadline, had it with Toney a few weeks back, the spurs boys, United players and now Watford.

I used to enjoy all the planning but seems a little pointless this season as it’s massively down to luck of late to even get a team out!

yeah if we are going to continually have covid wreak havoc like this, FPL need to think about putting some measures in place to help players. In a case like today were the Watford match has been called off after the deadline, why not allow those players who own anybody from the effected teams a free mid gameweek transfer? I'm sure it would be easy enough to facilitate.

      1. Hiiler
        • 4 Years
        4 years, 3 months ago

Yeah that would be great , but look at it from a different side. They can transfer players out for free and bring them back on DGW and still get the points. Thus actually benefiting from postponements. The solution must be something that does not hurt you but at the same time does not give you an advantage either.

The solution your giving can be used. I know a game might be postponed I get those players, so I can later on transfer them out mid GW and for free.

Although I guess there's very few solutions so perfect that it can't be used to get an advantage

yeah but the re-arranged games and subsequent double weeks likely wont be played for several weeks when the landscape will be totally different.

            • 10 Years
            4 years, 3 months ago

The issue there is that players like myself lose out this week through postponement but everyone will get the chance to benefit from a DGW.

Not suggesting an extra mid-week transfer is the answer either.

Yes I know I fully agree with you. This is the point Im making when I say by the time the double weeks are scheduled, the landscape has changed and like you say, everybody will have had opportunity to prepare for and plan for the double weeks so those who lost out because of the postponements dont get any advantage. The only way it would even up would be if the games were re-arranged immediately for the next gameweek but then thats not possible anyway as the players will still have covid!

          • 10 Years

Not sure what the best solution is but I know it’ll effect how engaged some managers are over time. It’s difficult to keep people interested in a game when they keep being handicapped through no fault of their own.

I guess we all just have to get on with it and hope the situation improves. Fingers crossed.

some are effected more than others though and I don't subscribe to the view that luck evens out. I had 3 Spurs players when the Spurs game was postponed and now I'm losing Dennis and King which just joyfully happens to coincide with Cancelo having to serve a suspension leaving me further short.

Currently we have the omicron variant but after that there is bound to be numerous other strains. It's about time the government accepted that covid is just something we are going to have to live with like the common cold/flu rather than imposing pointless isolation requirements. Take your vaccines and your own pre-cautions as you see fit and just frikkin get on with it! I bet the majority of the players who have covid don't have any symptoms and would be fit enough to play.
