The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) captaincy debate for Gameweek 19 has been completely turned on its head by the postponement of Liverpool v Leeds United.

As a result, Manchester United and Manchester City assets have been thrust into the spotlight, but there are other options on the radar too, including Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min (£10.3m) and Harry Kane (£12.1m).

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 19 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Sunday’s 13:30 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

For the first time since Gameweek 7, Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) isn’t top of the captain poll, having seen his Anfield clash against Leeds United called off due to a coronavirus outbreak in the visitors’ squad. Up until that point, the Egyptian had unsurprisingly been out in front with just over 71% of total votes.

Now, with the poll reset shortly after news broke, we have a new leader in Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), who has accumulated 33.22% of votes from our users at the time of writing.

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) currently sits in second place, backed by 21.62% of users ahead of his Etihad encounter against Leicester City.

Son Heung-min occupies third place with 17.18%, followed by Phil Foden (£8.1m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m), with 6.36% and 4.62% respectively.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Manchester United have seen their last two Premier League games against Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion postponed, due to a spate of coronavirus cases among players and staff. However, Cristiano Ronaldo has since led his team-mates back into training after their Carrington base re-opened, with manager Ralf Rangnick declaring “they are all in good shape” in Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

Due to those Covid-related match postponements, we have only seen the German tactician in the dugout three times, though the Red Devils have won both of their Premier League matches against Crystal Palace and Norwich City. During that time, Ronaldo has failed to score from open play, but his underlying numbers are more encouraging, having racked up 1.09 non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG).

Cristiano Ronaldo’s xG shot map under Ralf Rangnick

However, the real appeal lies in Monday’s opponents, Newcastle United. The Magpies’ 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in Gameweek 18 leaves them second-bottom of the table, with just one win and 10 points from 18 games, primarily because of their defence. Eddie Howe’s side have now conceded 41 goals in 2021/22, at an average of 2.3 per game, and a whopping 79 for the calendar year. It’s also worth noting that Ronaldo has scored seven goals in his last four league appearances against Newcastle, including a brace on his return to Man Utd in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

      Yep good fairly template moves.

Obviously Salah could punish v tired Leicester, and you’ve held Antonio for such a long time that it’s annoying to sell just before his fixtures go green.
      But Salah has
Blank, lei, che, blank, blank (and it could be a DGW blank in GW22), so seems the right time to lose him.
I’m also hoping those fixtures mean a mass-sell, so might not even lose that much value vs holding him.

My thinking to mate, Antonio has goid fxtures but a doubt, kept him for others to but no returns
Hopefully son could outscore salah in 3 games rather than salah 2

Good move by the looks of it. Just be wary that Salah might haul vs Leicester. If he doesn't you'll be laughing. If he does, you'll be sad.

People who are doing Salah to Son are hoping for Son to outscore Salah in the next 3.

People forget that most will Captain Salah vs Leicester. It could be a massive, massive rank killer if he goes berserk.

People who hold onto Salah can just do Salah to Son in GW21, simples.

Son’s in good form and has Southampton who have a higher xGC than Leicester and could outscore Salah. That’s apart from the score he could get against Palace before.

But then most can’t get to Ronaldo. I’m hoping for Ronaldo to haul this week, not just son vs Salah also Ronaldo vs Antonio/Watkins/Dennis

One option, which is a little short term, is swap Salah to don this week then back again the week after when Liverpool play. Depends how much money you have tied up in Salah.

My main issue with this is leaving points on the table this week to plan for a game that could easily be cancelled before Tuesday. It would be a sound strategy in normal times, but at the minute even medium term planning is likely to get you kicked in the teeth.

If you sold Salah and he scored a hattrick v Leicester you’d miss out on 40 points, minus whatever your captain got.

It’s really not the end of the world, and that’s the worst case scenario.

Don't the AFCON players have to join their squads from 27th December?
Granted Salah has received permission from Egypt to join after GW21. The rest should be leaving before that and I've not read any different.
Therefore this gameweek should be the last playing week for those players.

I’m in this boat. Considering FH as don’t want to sell three Pool and Rapha, plus I have King and Antonio. FH allows Son and Ronaldo in for this week and time to assess if Pool will play on the next gameweek..? Makes sense to me. I’m not sure there is enough info to make a call by close of play tomorrow. I’m happy with all my team and only have 0.1 spare once I get Ron back for Watkins which was my planned trade this week.

          FH

Salah, Trent, Jota, Rapha, King, Watkins out for sure...

Son(c) Ron in and have some fun with the other slots!

Wildcard Ron back in for Watkins, then assess Trent, Jota and Salah. Difficult to do much with King as he’s so cheap. It might end up being a two or three move wildcard.

          My team as it stands;

          Sanchez
          Trent Dias Rudiger
          Salah Jota Rapha Gallagher
          Antonio Watkins King

          Steele White Davies Brownhill

Similar team to yours and my WC is only 4 moves. But a FH this week means better long term planning available. I think there's gains to be made this GW. I'll bring in Son but Ron(c). Newcastle are worse than Palace

        Slept on it

Woke up and checked my favourite FH19 lineup. I'll be using the vital chip for these changes, essentially:

        Bilva to KDB
        Ramsey to Martinelli
        Jota to Bowen
        Salah to Son
Removing the -4 behind Laca to Ronaldo
        Getting a playing bench

If things go well, that could be 25+ points (+4). If not, around 10+ points (+4)

I think I'll take the -4 and camp safely behind a tower of sofas for Boxing Day. I don't like this decision: it's a lot less fun, but it might be the logical one

Unless another cancellation I wouldn't be Free Hitting.

I think the 2nd Free Hit chip will be very unique to each manager. Where a particular cancellation really screws your team and you also happen to have a few injuries or suspensions.

This week we have a lot of fit players and I think only Robertson in the sin bin. So unlikely it is going to be a priority yet.

Also let's not forget everyone who is anyone owns TAA, Jota and Salah. So you're only actually losing players from the other 3 teams.

        a) Mahrez

        c) Foden

I’m thinking Mahrez might be the most exciting.

Antonio should be ready for GW19 if he tested positive over a week ago and is double vaccinated.
Moyes said they getting him ready.
He's had his rest and less leggy now.

Doubt he plays both 19/20 so makes sense to give him a couple more days imo

Morning all. Will you keep Jota/Taa/Salah in your FH team in gw19?

Assume you have 2 FH still … as you cannot use your extra/2nd FH this GW. Also, if you were free hitting this week, why would anyone keep three players who don’t have a game?

He was dropped because of a discipline breach so people are worried he is still in Pep’s bad books and might not be selected.

Yes but surely that doesnt extend to another game? I would be amazed if he is benched/dropped again.

I would like to FH this week, however if DGWK 22 does turn out to be big, I would either need to take points hits or FH 22 as well.

So looking like a -4 and potentially no FH in 22 either (depending on fixtures)

That is the dilemma. Free hit this week or hope for a better use of it in the double GW.

Sounds like he's being rushed back in. I'd hold off a week or 2 fo see how fit he actually is

He’s available but I wouldn’t say he’s fit. I’d monitor over next few game weeks and if he proves his fitness, then he will be a definite option with those fixtures (and the lack of striker options in general) - but I would not touch him until he gets a few appearances under his belt.

          I agree with those above

I'd rather miss the Newcastle haul and get him on WC21 than dive in for GW 19/20 and have him injured again or lacking fitness

        Merry Christmas guys
        Who is the priority
Son with 3 games in hand or Ronaldo?
The combination is also vital as with Ronaldo i can get Martinelli but with Son I can get up to 8.0 striker but there is none!

Can't get both Son and Ronaldo. Think Ronaldo is a must and I'm maxed out on City and Arsenal players and already own Bowen. Even Kane and Sancho is not a possible combo.

Given the above, need a midfielder for next 4/5 gwks below 8.4:
        A) Maddison
        B) Gallagher
        C) Bench Fodder
