Aston Villa completed the signing of Lucas Digne (£5.0m) last week, in a deal worth a reported £25m plus add-ons.

The attack-minded left-back endured a successful spell at former club Everton, where he produced four Premier League goals and 22 assists across the previous three seasons, but was facing an uncertain future due to a fallout with Rafael Benitez.

Now at Villa Park, Digne’s move could prove fruitful for both attacking and defensive returns in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), which we’ll explore below, in this, our latest Moving Target report.

EVERTON

Digne’s FPL potential evident in Aston Villa debut 2

28-year-old Digne signed for Everton from Barcelona ahead of the 2018/19 campaign and has since been one of the best players in his position in the Premier League.

As one of his team’s main creators, his tally of 22 FPL assists across the last three seasons puts him behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) amongst all defenders, whilst his 0.14 expected assists (xA) per 90 minutes under Carlo Ancelotti in 2020/21 was the sixth-highest rate.

However, he has failed to produce a single attacking return this term. Benitez’s defensive demands will have to take much of the blame, with Digne’s attacking output suffering as a result.

“The manager asked me to be more of a defender this season, to stay back a bit more and keep a better balance for the team. Then, sometimes, I can drive forwards, but only when it is right for the team. My first job is to defend, I am a left-back. If what you are being asked to do is for the good of the team, that is it, the end of the discussion. You do the job the manager wants.” – Digne on his role under Benitez

ASTON VILLA

Digne’s FPL potential evident in Aston Villa debut

Digne became the second player through the door for Villa in this January transfer window, following the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m) from Barcelona.

And whilst the Brazilian stole the headlines against Manchester United in Double Gameweek 22, with a goalscoring appearance off the bench, Digne also caught the eye on his Villa debut.

DIGNE’S FIRST-MATCH – SCOUT REPORT

Immediately installed at left-back, Digne served up a zero-pointer against Manchester United on Saturday evening, thanks to his concession of two goals and a yellow card.

However, he was very advanced up the Villa left flank, registering 25 final-third touches (the second-most of Villa players), two shots in the box and two chances created, and was also involved at set-piece situations.

It’s also worth noting Digne’s touch heatmap, which further emphasises his prominent role at the business end of the pitch:

Above: Lucas Digne’s touch heatmap v Manchester United in Double Gameweek 22

All-in-all, it was a bright start for Villa’s new full-back, as he crossed well into United’s box and almost got on the scoresheet himself, as he fired a decent effort at David de Gea (£5.2m) in the second half.

He cramped up towards the end but provided a good attacking outlet throughout, which bodes well for his prospects in the coming weeks.

THE PROSPECTS

Though often portrayed as a 4-3-3 formation, Gerrard’s Villa have really been playing a 4-3-2-1 since his arrival, as the wide forwards are more no. 10s than traditional wingers.

As a result, the full-backs are tasked with offering the width in the final third, which should suit Digne, who specialises in overlapping runs and crosses.

His relationship with those ahead of him down his flank will be key, then, and you can certainly see him thriving with Coutinho, who will look to drift infield and create space, plus Jacob Ramsey (£4.6m), who is more than capable of covering the Frenchman’s attacking forays.

So, Digne carries plenty of threat going forward, but what about his clean sheet potential?

From Gameweek 12 onwards – Gerrard’s first match in charge – Villa have kept two clean sheets across their nine Premier League fixtures, conceding 12 goals, though three of them were penalties. That isn’t anything to write home about, but the strength of opposition should of course be factored in, with the Villans having faced Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester City during that time.

The next run of games, however, gives Villa a real opportunity to build some momentum, as they sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture right through until Gameweek 28. There is also potential for a Double Gameweek to be added into the mix, perhaps as soon as Gameweek 23, with postponed ties against Leeds United (a) and Burnley (h) still to be rearranged.

At this stage, we should highlight the threat posed by Matt Targett (£4.7m), Villa’s ‘other’ left-back, who will offer competition for a starting spot. However, it’s clear Digne is a significant upgrade on the former Southampton man, who has struggled at times this season with several below-par performances.

Meanwhile, we also shouldn’t completely write off right-back Matty Cash (£5.1m) as an FPL option. Set pieces probably swing it in Digne’s favour but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he kept pace during this next run of games, as the Frenchman settles into his new surroundings. Cash’s expected goal involvement (xGI) delta of -1.46 certainly suggests there is more to come from him, and confirms that he has been unfortunate not to produce more attacking returns in 2021/22 so far.

Normally we preach a ‘wait and see’ policy with new signings to see how they bed in, but with Villa’s next run of fixtures of such an attractive nature, an early move for Digne is appealing. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain full-back will provide an attacking quality that Villa have been lacking this season, and if they are handed a Double Gameweek 23, it’s realistic to think he’ll be subject to huge Fantasy interest in the coming days.

Why, because it's fun to see teams with fewer resources get smashed.

Burnley had three teams cancel fixtures on them.
Now when they are down to just 10 senior players in training everyone turns on them like Burnley and their tiny squad are the problem.
Burnley probably one of the few clubs using the rules as intended.

Which problem would you address first?

    A. Dier.
    B. James.

The rest of my team is healthy (currently!).

Is there an argument for leaving either of these two in my squad until they heal?

(I’m not sure what the estimated return dates are. They seem vague…).

There's not exactly a long queue of impressive coaches for the job. Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson aren't any better choices than Martinez. The owner wants a puppet in charge but what's needed is a quality coach who makes all the decisions including hiring and firing players and his own backroom staff.

I'm not. But it's not that straightforward to opt for Watkins. One could argue that the presence of Coutinho can enhance the prospects of Ings scoring more ( if he plays regularely ofc).

Watkins if those are the two options. I’m a Villa supporter and I would be hard-pressed to conjure up a scenario in which I would bring Ings (back) into my team. I like him a lot but not enough to put him in my lineup

I like them both to be honest. Ings would sway me if he's on penalties. Otherwise, Watkins looks more nailed and I see a lot of people opting for Watkins, hence the question. To me it's a coin toss if they have same minutes. Cheers!

As a current Watkins owner (I only took him as a place holder in selling Son) I can't wait to get rid of him as he is an under achiever in FPL terms but Gerrard is likely to pick him over Ings due to his mobility I suspect. My next move will be to replace him with either Coutinho or Ramsey (in a 2 p!layer transfer). I won't miss him or his lack of points.

I get where you're coming from. Likewise I can't wait enough to get rid of Alonso and Rudiger. Literally no clean sheets whatsoever. And I bought them because they were supposed to be good defensively.

Did exactly this - went early on Son thinking he was probably safe only to learn injury news later. Took the hit to get Bruno (c) in. But also hit for Dennis knowing the uncertainty, so win some lose some.

Do people genuinely want to see a bunch of random kids and reserves play Vs an almost full strength rival? Can't think of anything more boring, obviously I want games to be on but I don't think people are thinking things through

Is it competitive if one team is ravaged and one isn't? Yes Leicester won against odds Vs Liverpool and Leeds did against West ham, obviously it isn't impossible but the majority of times the team not ravaged with covid and injuries will win

Think it's another case of people just complaining for the sake of it, can see it flip completely if the premier league starts forcing your favourite teams to play with kids Vs full strength rivals

    1. Meechoo115

But take arsenal. Once Covid over. Say they had odegaard out only and ten others out for other reasons. Ok for them to cancel?

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        4 years, 6 months ago

Context, depends who, what, etc too many variables to just give a yes or no. My general point is that most teams cancelling are having outbreaks combined with injuries and bans and other things, nobody wants to lose points and places or even face relegation without their best team out. I don't blame em

If covid isn't around and you have injuries and bans to your main team, it's crack on and play. But covid is around so it's too regular of an occurrence to be down too many players

nah - i want to watch football games.
i love watching young players mixed with old.
i love watching teams stacked with great players
i love watching under-matched players doing their best

i completely understand clubs asking for postponements.
i also understand the intent of the rule the PL put in place to protect teams against covid outbreaks.

      life is complicated!

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        4 years, 6 months ago

        1. RogDog_jimmy
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 6 months ago

          that's just not true.
there'd be 6-8 first team players and a couple of young guys and maybe 1 or 2 new players.

it's not a full u21 team vs the seniors.

          1. @persecuted_by_mods
            4 years, 6 months ago

How can you say it's unequivocally not true when each team has different scenarios? I didn't say it would be a full u21 team, I'm saying in most of these cases its bit part players and then some youngsters would need to step in, especially in the case of the teams with smaller squads

And I think those teams would mainly lose

            1. RogDog_jimmy
              • 5 Years
              4 years, 6 months ago

i should say that i think you're framing of this as "a bunch of random kids and reserves" is a mischaracterization of what we've seen so far with the current cancellations. that it would be a combination of senior and junior players.

i don't really want to argue about this - i just don't think that making the games go ahead with available squad/youth players would be all that big a deal. we can disagree.

I think the Leeds situation influenced things. They had ten out anyway and added 2 or 3 Covid. So the prem widened rules. Served Liverpool and arsenal well because of afcon

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 6 months ago

I just think it's too easy to sit here when they get cancelled and think wow this is a farce! When people aren't thinking about what if it's final day relegation decider and one team has 8 starters out, same for champions League spots, or the title. In those circumstances covid playing a part would rankle, it may be that it simply has to be that way to make any sort of progress but I don't know, it wouldn't sit right with me

Football players can get as seriously ill from COVID as we can. Arguably fatigued footballers could be more at risk with a weaker immune system. Of course some clubs are using every loophole to get ames postponed. But that's their livelihoods, a few games postponed makes no difference in the scheme if things to us keyboard warriors.

Its only one game, or maybe two out of 38, so why is it such a big deal to see unlikely players getting a chance? It's not normal circumstances, which generally call for unusual solutions and I do think the PL should have had a second look at how they're handing "more flexible and expansive roster construction and permissive registration rules during an ongoing pandemic".

What a joke the last few weeks have been.

Keane and Soucek in for a hit. Dennis captain.

I know its the same for everyone bar Bruno cappers it seems but my plan for now on is to pretty much ignore the potential double gamesweeks for the so called smaller clubs.

My team will be pretty much triple City, Liverpool and Arsenal with two West Ham.

Villa have a double gamesweek? Not interested.

Everton have a double gamesweek? Not interested

    Leicester have a....

    You get the picture.

And not because I don't think Cash or Maddison or whoever can score well in a two game period, because they can. But I'm sick of wasting transfers getting doublers in when the rest of my team suffers.

Alonso to Laporte this week for me but if Southampton have a double for example everyone will want KWP no doubt

    Sick of it.

Some thrive in the carnage. If it's a regular predictable season with just AFCON and CWC to negotiate around this time of year there's many templating away saving chips til later. But the new variables are great for the FPL MacGyvers.

Sure it’s just a fantasy ‘game’, most people don’t lose sleep over it but I completely disagree with those saying things like “this was foreseeable, predictable”, etc. if you’re having a good season, great, but don’t act like there haven’t been such large amounts of luck/bad luck involved this season.

Sucks to be template, and I've found my differentials to be the most disappoint part of my squads this season too - but the first two especially were iffy picks. Dennis was too given the recent injury issues.
