We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a weekday series that serves non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

JOTA INJURY LATEST

All eyes and ears will be on Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference on Friday after Diogo Jota (£8.5m), owned by 40% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers overall and 88% of the top 10,000 bosses, picked up an ankle injury in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Inter Milan.

Jota failed to emerge for the second half in the San Siro, with Klopp later explaining that the Portuguese midfielder’s half-time substitution was enforced after he sustained a knock in the opening 45 minutes.

“Diogo had to go off with something around the ankle ligament, we will see – we don’t know exactly. He could play on (until the break), obviously, maybe it’s a good sign. But at half-time, the ankle was swollen and we had to change.” – Jurgen Klopp speaking to pitchside reporters immediately after full-time

“His ankle is swollen, it’s obviously not a good sign, but we have to see. We’ll check it as early as possible tomorrow but we need further assessment.” – Jurgen Klopp in his post-match press conference

The Reds open their Double Gameweek 26 with a home fixture against Norwich City on Saturday, less than 72 hours after their Champions League success in Milan, before welcoming Leeds United to Anfield next Wednesday.

SALAH SCORES

While one widely owned Liverpool midfielder was icing his ankle, another put his side into a commanding first-leg position.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) hadn’t been at his best against Inter but still added to Roberto Firmino‘s (£8.7m) strike with his first goal since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Salah was the only Liverpool midfielder or forward to last 90 minutes in Milan, with Sadio Mane (£11.7m) hooked as part of a triple substitution on the hour-mark. His replacement, new signing Luis Diaz (£8.0m), was arguably the pick of the five players who spent time in the front three.

There were full-game run-outs for Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m), too, and the latter has now racked up 360 minutes of football over the last 11 days.

Above graphic from Legomane

Liverpool now face seven more matches in the space of three weeks, with the cup tie against Norwich looking like a good time to hand key players some breathers – although there is every chance of a degree of minute-management in the upcoming Gameweek 26 double-header, with an EFL Cup final against Chelsea only 10 days away.

As for Manchester City, their emphatic 5-0 win in Lisbon 24 hours earlier effectively means that Pep Guardiola can spare some of his big-name players in every midweek between now and the March international break, as we’ll surely see some rests dished out in the FA Cup tie against Peterborough in between Gameweeks 27 and 28.

Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m), Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), Raheem Sterling (£10.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m) all lasted the full game in Portugal, with Phil Foden (£8.0m) withdrawn after 61 minutes.

VARDY ON THE RADAR FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 30

Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) is “10 days to two weeks” away from a return to action, putting him in the frame for a Gameweek 28 comeback, if not sooner.

The striker has been out of action in 2022 because of a hamstring injury but is already back on the grass.

“[Vardy is] working very well. He’s probably a couple of weeks away, 10 days to two weeks. He’s out on the field, he’s running, he’s working and he’s looking very sharp, so hopefully soon.” – Brendan Rodgers

Vardy’s return to fitness is one for the FPL watchlist as Leicester are one of just six teams who are guaranteed a league fixture in Blank Gameweek 30, which clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals. The results of the fifth round of that competition will determine just how big a blank it is.

Brendan Rodgers also gave updates on two of his defenders ahead of Thursday’s Conference League clash with Randers.

“[James Justin]’s probably going to be a couple of weeks, thankfully it’s not too serious, but there’s a slight strain in there so he’ll miss a couple of weeks.

“[Fofana] starts [training] on Friday.” – Brendan Rodgers

I feel you can get a better bench in GW36, potentially 8 fixtures. But if you dont want to hold WC till then and plan around BB, then go for it. Its a decent bench.

Mine was worse and still managed to get 24pts

Not quite feeling the Salah TC yet, tbh. Feel like Salah will do well, of course he will, he's Salah. But not as well as people are guessing. It's a great double on paper, yes, but just the sort of games where Salah is withdrawn early in one and benched in the other. Just waiting to see if there'll be similar-ish TC opportunities in the future DGWs or not. If I end up going Salah TC, it'll be because I have no other options rather than me feeling this is a golden TC opportunity.

Agreed. Not the week to TC - they'll be a better opportunity down the road.

Strong options are going to be rare I think. Man City players are rotation prone, Arsenal's DGW are unlikely to be any good, Chelsea dont have any standout options.

Will have to be a punt from mid-table teams who are obviously not reliable and consistent. With Salah, atleast the floor is looking higher. If it fails, so be it, its not like we have got many successful TCs in recent years.

Jota injury kinda confirms my moves this week.

    Keane & Jota > Robbo & Saka (-4)

Will leave me with 5 blank players in GW27. If I have to play with 9 then, so be it. At least I am going to attack dgw26 now.

If I'm playing it safe, I'll go VVD. Think Robbo just need to go beast mode in one fixture a la Lamptey dgw25 to go double digit.

Yes Leeds are bad, like Palace early on. But Leicester are worse, hence Robbo to Tark in 27 is a possibility

Well that Jota injury is annoying.

Move him to Saka for -4 or just leave it with Ramsey, Reguilon, Coufal on the bench?

Could also do Reg to Robertson for -8 but can see Tsimikas starting one.

    1. luk46

depends how long hes out for and whether youre planning to use FH in 27 or not

I have Ramsey on the bench too but still doing Jota to Saka.

Getting Robbo for a hit as a result. Tsimi is a threat yes but I think Robbo will start both (might be taken off early, hopefully after 60') as Klopp must surely want to challenge City - win the game in hand and it's only 6 points difference. Tsimi can wait for FA cup to start 🙂

how does this -8 look like?

Jota + Foden + Antonio + Watkins > Salah + Saka + Weghorst + Broja. would give me:

    Ramsdale
    Trent Robbo Cancelo
    Salah Son Bowen Saka Coutinho
    Weghorst Dennis

      Ugh disgusting.

If I have 2 FH, surely I will play one in 27 - load up Southampton (JWP and Broja) vs Norwich, triple Burnley, Kane and Son vs Leeds, triple City vs Everton. Unfortunately only got one FH left.

It's going to be tricky going into 27 with 5 blankers (3 Liv, 2 Ars) and survive without using FH. Nonetheless I'm hoping my differential can save my gameweek later.. Wood vs Brentford 🙂

      1. Holmes
        • 12 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, just need to weigh the options since I dont want to use both FH in BGWs. If I use in 27, then I would like to navigate 30 without FH. Options in 27 are certainly interesting for one week punt.

I will have 5 blankers as well but had enough cover to field 11 after transfers. But FH makes it easier and forces me to get rid of Jota this week.

Wood vs Brentford is double digit haul 😉

          • 13 Years
          4 years, 1 month ago

You still got WC? If yes, I think we have the option to dead end our team until 30 and WC in 31. I like the idea of not using FH in BGW. With careful planning o transfers/hits, I think we can still field 9,10 in 30. Burnley, Soton, Everton, Watford can still feature.. United and Liverpool less likely but there's still hope 🙂

Your 5 blankers are easier to navigate since it got Ramsdale in it 😉 I deserve a haul from Wood.. keeping him since 15 without a single goal lol

            • 12 Years

All chips except BB are intact. Current plan is TC26, FH30, FH36 and WC whenever the team needs it. FH27, WC31 and FH36 could potentially be more rewarding. Something to think about till tomorrow. FH27 also allows to get rid of De Gea for Ramsdale instead of upgrading 2nd GK, more cash to play with. All in all, I'm leaning toward FH27 now.

Was expecting Wood to perform better at Newcastle but it has not worked yet. Howe is probably trying safety first approach at the moment.

Yeah plenty of ways to go. I'd ditch DDG for Ramsdale, just a GW28 move brought forward.

Man Wood's been unlucky. Against villa, if the foul was inside the box, it'd be him scoring from the spot instead of Trippier from yet another FK lol. Hopefully the fullbacks are going to keep whipping in the crosses for my big guy.

I'm languishing around 2m this season, been a bad one. Doing a slightly radical WC this week:

    Sa
    TAA (c) Kilman Coady Robbo
    Cornet Salah (vc) Son
    Wout Kane Broja

    Pope Coutinho Ramsey Digne

Idea is to go against my mini league Salah TC'ers, whilst saving my 1 free hit for a juicy week post 30, perhaps in 36.

3x Burnley for the double in 27
    3 Wolves 3 Villa for guaranteed 30
No Arsenal so can save transfer 27

Could go horribly wrong, or so right! If I'm gonna get top 100k I need some sort of diverse seat.

If Weghorst is out I'll probably punt JRod and upgrade Kilman and Coady to Saiss and Semedo. I think Wolves defence is so under the radar right now with most managers seeing them play Arsenal and being put off for example.

GW27 i can manage without Jota. The lure of 26 is huge.

In 28 he might be back if not then I can get Maddison.

Bruno to Salah is a must. I'd keep KDB. Would need to downgrade a defender most probably.

Kdb to Salah. Fund it by downgrading DDG

Tried that, at most, can get a 4.4 keeper, tho selling DDG probably means no BB & TC instead?

I'm trying to keep double city defence, but that's definitely a good option considering tark plays 4 times over next two GWs

    FH draft with Mane:
    Pope
    TAA - Tierney - Semedo
    Salah - Mane - Zaha - Saka - Ødegaard
    Kane - Jimenez

Not sure Mane is worth it > VVD/Robbo though.

      Saiss. Goal threat.

Just checked and surprisingly all of them are pretty bad in terms of BPs. Sa is leading with 11 followed by Semedo's 7

Interestingly, Coady has scored 2 goals which is his highest goal tally till date. Must be going for corners under new manager.

Who is Semedo's competition for his spot? I have Ait Nouri but nervous he won't start every game.

Kilman, Saiss, Coady seem to be the most nailed.

With Jonny potentially coming in anywhere across the back, its a wait & see as to who's nailed, but mostly likely Ait Nouri (who I have) or Semedo making way. Would stick to the CBs if choosing now - Saiss 1st if you can afford for that little bit of goal threat. Coady is slightly above Kilman for bonus but close between them.

Firmino could come good this week.
It’s a ‘gamble’ just like Mane, Jota, Diaz & even Robertson.

TAA - VVD - Salah would be my choice for nailedness, but VBD feels boring on FH
